A judge in Florida has delayed the trial of Justin Bieber on charges of driving under the influence until July.

William Altfield from Miami-Dade County granted a request from Bieber's lawyers to postpone the case on Wednesday.

His lawyer Roy Black said more time was needed to examine evidence and make decisions about how to proceed.

The singer also faces charges of resisting arrest and driving with an expired licence.

The trial was delayed from the beginning of next month to 7 July.

The 20-year-old singer was arrested at the end of January in Miami Beach after what police described as an illegal street drag race.

A urine sample taken from Bieber after his arrest tested positive for marijuana and Xanax, a drug that treats anxiety and insomnia, according to Miami Beach police.

Alcohol breath tests found the star's level to be below the 0.02 limit for underage drivers.

The delay of his trial follows the 20-year-old being forced to apologise after he posted a picture of a visit to a controversial Japanese war shrine this week.

He said he thought it was only a place of prayer.

Police have since released several images from the Miami arrest.

The pictures were released under Florida's public records law, which allows the media to request any evidence that forms part of a criminal case.

Bieber is also facing an assault charge in Canada after being accused of hitting a limousine driver on the back of the head.

Toronto police say Bieber hit the driver over the back of the head after picking him and five other people up from a nightclub in the early hours of 30 December.

His home was also searched in January, after he was accused of causing thousands of dollars worth of damage to a neighbour's house by throwing eggs.
