Alphonso mangoes import ban could damage Leicester businesses

A shopkeeper in Leicester has said an EU ban on a sweet type of mango could see city retailers' profits fall by thousands of pounds.

Alphonso mangoes, which come from India, will not be available in the UK after a fruit fly was found in some imports.

Belgrave shopkeeper Rajesh Pabari said he can make £9,000 from selling the mangoes during their eight-week growing season.

Dharmesh Lakhanit from the Belgrave Business Association said the fruits are "very valuable" to Leicester's economy.
