Anglesey red squirrel deaths virus investigation

Experts will carry out tests to see if a virus is responsible for clusters of dead red squirrels found on Anglesey.

Three were found dead close to one another followed by another six a few hundred yards away close to Beaumaris.

Tests will be conducted to see if they had the adenovirus, which has affected squirrels in the north of England.

Dr Craig Shuttleworth of Bangor University said: "It's quite concerning. It's something we've got to investigate."

The red squirrel population on Anglesey has increased from about 40 squirrels in 1998 to more than 700 and a wild colony is set to be established in neighbouring Gwynedd to try and boost its numbers.
