Seven Cardiff libraries under threat in council cuts

The future of seven Cardiff libraries is uncertain after a proposal to stop them losing their council funding was rejected.

Cathays, Roath, Rhydypennau, Rumney, Radyr, Rhiwbina and Whitchurch are all under threat.

Councillors rejected a motion which called for savings of £283,000 to be found elsewhere in the authority's budget.

A meeting on Thursday heard "huge numbers" were against the cuts.

Conservative councillor Craig Williams said residents had signed petitions showing support for saving the libraries' funding and around 40 people protested outside City Hall before the meeting.

Graham Hinchey, cabinet member for corporate services and performance, said like all local authorities, Cardiff was facing unprecedented financial pressures.

The authority needs to save £48.3m in 2015/16. The final decision on the proposed cuts will be made on 26 February.
