"I am deeply taken with traditional music, it moves me, it connects you to emotion.
The idea with HUMAN was to create songs that would reflect the same emotion generated by the interviews. I wanted things to open up, to open up one’s heart, to let the sadness be without any restraint. HUMAN has been one of these rare moments in my life as a film composer during which I could express all these different cultures at the same time : either working on minimalist songs or meeting with these singers and musicians coming from all around the world. Which note did I first produce ? I had more like a global vision in mind, an atmosphere that would merge into the film and that would bring people together, this was my starting point. The part I created for the Mongolian sequence might be the best summary of the atmosphere I wanted the film to have.
Yann has given me a particular role as a film composer that is very diffrent from the one other directors usually give me. There is a strong friendship between us, an intimate relationship. Hoge bloeddruk geldt als de bekendste risicofactor voor hart- en vaatziekten. De dood kan er jaren door naar voren schuiven. Maar verrassend genoeg werkt een hoge bloeddruk bij gezonde ouderen juist levensverlengend. Op die bevinding promoveert huisarts en wetenschapper Wouter de Ruijter volgende week aan de Universiteit Leiden.
De arts volgde ruim 4500 gezonde 55-plussers uit Rotterdam. Bij de ’jonkies’ uit deze groep was een hoge bloeddruk zoals gebruikelijk een voorbode van ellende, maar met het klimmen der jaren bleef er van de gevreesde effecten steeds minder over. Bij 75-plussers bleek de voorspellende waarde van de hoge bloeddruk gedaald tot nul. En nog iets later klapte de zaak zelfs om: 85-plussers met een hoge bloeddruk leefden juist langer.
Volgens medische leerboeken geldt een bovendruk van maximaal 140 als aanvaardbaar. Hoger moet het niet worden. Maar gezonde 85-plussers werden beduidend ouder met een bovendruk boven de 140, en nóg ouder als ze de 160 overschreden. Hoe hoger, hoe beter.
De Ruijter, werkzaam in het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum, plaatst daar wel een kanttekening bij: „De resultaten gelden alleen voor gezonde ouderen, niet voor ouderen die al hart- en vaatziekten hebben. Voor die laatsten blijft het nodig om een hoge bloeddruk goed onder controle te houden.”
Hoe kan een hoge bloeddruk voor gezonde ouderen ongevaarlijk, zelfs gunstig zijn? De promovendus ziet twee verklaringen. Ten eerste: hoe ouder mensen zijn, des te bijzonderder ze in elkaar zitten. Ze vormen een selecte, maar groeiende groep mensen voor wie bekende biologische mechanismen niet altijd opgaan.
„Ten tweede heb je op hoge leeftijd een hogere druk nodig om de organen goed doorbloed te houden”, vult De Ruijter aan. „Allerlei organen functioneren beter onder extra druk. De nieren bijvoorbeeld. En de hersenen: een hoge bloeddruk bevordert bij ouderen de cognitie.”
De promovendus keek niet alleen naar de bloeddruk, maar ook naar andere klassieke risicofactoren waarmee artsen de kans op hart- en vaatziekten inschatten: cholesterol, roken, suikerziekte, geslacht enzovoort. Zijn conclusie is dat een hoge risicoscore bij 85-plussers in de verste verte niet meer duidt op een verhoogde kans om aan hart- en vaatziekten te sterven. In 1997 hadden Leidse wetenschappers al ontdekt dat een hoog cholesterolgehalte bij de alleroudsten niet slecht maar juist gunstig is.
Officieel gelden de klassieke risicofactoren alleen voor mensen tot 70 à 75 jaar. Maar in de praktijk passen huisartsen, internisten en zelfs geriaters ze ook vaak toe op 75-plussers. Zulke ouderen krijgen dan wel of geen medicijnen op basis van een schatting die bij nader inzien helemaal niets over hen zegt.
Dat moet anders, stelt De Ruijter. „In plaats van de klassieke factoren kun je bij gezonde ouderen beter de concentratie homocysteïne (een aminozuur in het bloed, red.) meten. Die lijkt wel tot op heel hoge leeftijd te voorspellen of iemand een grote kans loopt om aan hart- en vaatziekten te sterven.”
Het wordt lastig om iedereen te overtuigen, verwacht De Ruijter. „Mensen komen vaak met opgestroopte mouw de spreekkamer binnen. ’Dokter, kijkt u even of de druk nog goed is?’ Bloeddruk heeft een haast magische status, ook onder artsen. Toch moeten we eraan wennen dat een arts tegen een gezonde 80-plusser met een bovendruk van 180 zegt: ’Prima zo, niks aan doen.’”

NOTE: This awesome tune was composed in USA in 1941 during last months of the American peaceful neutrality in the first 2 years of the 2nd World War. On the 27th of September 1941 the song reached the top position in the Billboard’s chart of best selling retail records in USA. It’s elegance and sophisticated orchestration made the song symbolic musical farewell to the American glamour style of the 1930s. Two months later, on 7th Dec 1941 the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor put an end to that era. Natuurorganisatie: absurd om Formule 1-teams over strand naar Zandvoort te laten rijden

NOORDWIJK - Natuurorganisatie Duinbehoud heeft geen goed woord over voor de plannen om de Formule 1-teams tijdens de Grand Prix van Zandvoort over het strand naar het circuit te laten rijden. 'We hebben hard gewerkt om afspraken te maken over het gebruik van het strand', zegt Marc Janssen van de stichting in het radioprogramma Studio Haagsche Bluf. 'Dit werpt ons tien jaar terug.'
De gemeente Noordwijk liet dinsdag weten dat het niet per se negatief is over het plan van de Formule 1-teams om tijdens de Grand Prix over het strand van Noordwijk naar Zandvoort te rijden. Drie teams zullen in de week van de Formule 1-race in Noordwijk verblijven en de teams willen, om uit de drukte te blijven, graag via de kortste weg naar het circuit.
Janssen is verontwaardigd over het voorstel. 'Het is een absurd plan. De afgelopen tien jaar hebben we hard gewerkt om afspraken te maken over het gebruik van het strand voor de recreatie en de natuur. Op de grens van Zandvoort en Noordwijk moet een recreatiegebied komen waar nu hard aan gewerkt wordt. Als je een colonne Formule 1-auto's hier doorheen laat rijden, dan zijn we weer tien jaar terug in de tijd.'
Naar de rechter
Duinbehoud gaat zich dan ook inzetten om het plan van tafel te krijgen. 'We hebben regelmatig overleg met de organisatie, dus in een volgend overleg gaan we dit zeker bespreken. Ook zullen we kijken wat de gemeente Noordwijk gaat doen. Zij nemen waarschijnlijk volgende week een beslissing. Mocht de gemeente dit plan toch doorzetten dan maken we bezwaar en desnoods gaan we naar de rechter.'
Janssen is niet bang voor de kritiek van Formule 1-liefhebbers. 'Die zal ongetwijfeld komen, maar wij staan voor het natuurbelang en de natuur heeft ook recht van spreken', vertelt Janssen. Er is het afgelopen jaar veel overleg geweest over het verkeersplan en daarin is dit nooit besproken. Dus om via een achterdeur alsnog over het strand te willen rijden vind ik niet netjes.'

Spreeuwen bij Veenwouden laten adembenemend schouwspel zien

Een adembenemend schouwspel, dat lieten duizenden spreeuwen zaterdagavond zien bij Veenwouden in Friesland. Niet alleen vogelspotters vinden dit prachtig ook veel mensen uit het dorp kwamen een kijkje nemen.
In de avondschemering komen de vogels samen in wervelende wolken. Vaak boven weilanden waar ze overnachten. Ze willen op deze manier aan andere spreeuwen laten weten dat ze een slaapplek hebben gevonden.
Geen botsingen
Vanaf een afstandje lijken de vogels zich te gedragen als een. Maar hoe kan het dat de vogels niet op elkaar klappen? Volgens het It Fryske Gea, de provinciale vereniging voor natuurbescherming in Friesland, ligt dat aan twee dingen. Ten eerste vliegen de spreeuwen allemaal zo’n 36 kilometer per uur. Want remmen of versnellen kost te veel energie. Dat maakt samen vliegen al makkelijker, want bots maar eens met iemand die precies even hard gaat. Dat kan alleen als je de bocht om gaat.
Dan zou het dus alleen fout kunnen gaan in de bocht. Maar ook daarvoor hebben de vogels iets bedacht. Iedere vogel houdt maximaal zeven buurvogels in de gaten en zorgen dat ze daar niet tegenaan vliegen. Als een paar spreeuwen van koers veranderen, dan verspreidt die beweging zich dus door de hele wolk.
Het komt wel vaker voor dat spreeuwen dit doen, maar zo veel bij elkaar zie je zelden.
