Owner of injured horse lets it bleed so he can claim compensation
He refused to let NGO take the animal for treatment, as he wanted officials to inspect it following accident at civic construction site

A tonga owner chose to let his horse bleed dangerously instead of accepting the help of an NGO to treat the injured animal following an accident.
On Sunday morning, a girder at the ongoing Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) project in Kalyan (W) fell on the horse which was tied to the tonga, severely injuring its right hind leg. A blood vessel tore open and it started bleeding profusely.
Owner Rauf Phalke with the horse at his shed
Owner Rauf Phalke narrated, “I realised one of the girders was about to fall. I screamed out to the workers, but before I knew it, the girder came crashing down on my horse.” Phalke informed the Mahatma Phule police, who came to the spot and asked him to rush the animal to hospital before it died.
The nearest veterinary hospital is the Thane SPCA Centre, but the owner chose to take the bleeding horse to his shed - located one km away.
As soon as volunteers of Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) learnt of the incident, they tried to speak to Phalke. “The horse was badly injured and we made arrangements for its treatment at the SPCA Centre.
But the owner declared that he would not let go of the animal as he wanted to show civic authorities the injured animal.”
Since it was a Sunday none of the officials attached with the SATIS project were available to inspect the animal, and it continued to bleed.
But Phalke maintained, “I have contacted two vets who are away. I will get my horse treated on my own but will not send him to a hospital. Tomorrow if the authorities arrive for an inspection what will I show them?”
His colleagues explained that his decision was because the compensation would be denied to him if he sent the animal to a hospital. At the time of going to press, the horse was alive but critical.
Brief Human rights for Austria
Dear, I have always considered Austria to be an established constitutional state. However, what I have just read about Austria's treatment of social activists has deeply undermined my trust in the rule of law in this country. It is highly disturbing to read that, in Austria, animal protection campaigners are now facing up to 5 years imprisonment because of activities such as organising demonstrations, expressing opinions or documenting the conditions on livestock farms, which is apparent from the charge sheets the activists have released. As a member of parliament and a representative of a major political party, you share a great deal of responsibility for this situation. Although I appreciate that you are not empowered to interfere in the judicial proceedings, you do share the power over the legislation by which the court is bound. It is an essential aspect of a functioning democracy that any misuse of law for anti-democratic practices is promptly corrected by the legislature amending the law to make sure that such misuse shall not continue. Making a person stand a six-month long trial, and especially imposing remand custody, is something that is only admissible if serious evidence of criminal behaviour can be presented. When the prosecution, instead, bases the charges on activities like organising demonstrations, it is indeed a totalitarian excess, which requires the use of all legitimate means for its remedy. Therefore, I urge that your political party support the amendment of Sec 278a of the Penal Code, on which the persecution of the activists has been based. The existence of Sec 278a is justified by the need to fight organised crime, but its wording does not follow the EU and the UN definition of organised crime, which requires the intent to enrich oneself rather than to “exert influence over politics and the economy” to be present. Following the internationally recognised standard would surely not compromise Austria's security but would prevent further misuse of Sec 278a against political activists. Furthermore, I urge that your political party reject any new provision whose interpretation could lead to similar excesses. I am especially concerned about the proposed widening of the anti-terrorist legislation, which has already been criticised by Amnesty International for providing too vague a definition of incitement and terror training, which could create another opportunity for persecution of inconvenient political activists. I urge you to take this situation seriously. Persecuting citizens for their opinions and political activities is a practice that does not belong to the 21st century Europe. Yours sincerely
If you’ve put off joining the cause for animal rights because you find the idea of joining an all-out PETA protest terrifying, or because you’re too tired when you come home from a long day’s work, or simply because you don’t know how, then there’s no longer an excuse. No matter what your level of ability (mental, physical, or economical), there are several exceedingly easy ways to promote animal well being without leaving the comfort of your own living room.
First, you can write letters. This can be a self-initiated task where you express your distaste (in polite ways) to a person or company that is not acting ethically towards animals. You also have the option of joining ongoing campaigns and adding your voice to augment the effectiveness of a cause which may be about food, pets, or any number of things. You’ll find something you’re passionate about on any number of animal rights websites. These do not have to be professional letters, so just write from the heart.
If picking up the pen is not for you, you might click the mouse instead. On social networking sites, you can help make money for animal rights organizations simply by clicking on and getting others to click on their websites. This requires little effort beyond a few e-mails, and you can even post general comments. Link clicking has the added benefit of disseminating important information to those who may not be aware of the problems animals are facing.
Of course, another option is to look to one of those animals. If you can, consider adopting a pet from a shelter. Yes, you’ll have to go out to do this, but besides a little feeding, you can spend a great amount of time in your chair loving this animal. And if you happen to be an older American or disabled, pets like calm cats can make excellent companions as they sit on your lap and lavish you with love.
Animal rights can happen one animal at a time. It can also happen one person at a time. Without even engaging a group or cause or company, you can effect impressive change by altering yourself. Do some research on what you’re eating. You might consider becoming a vegetarian, or at least avoiding foods and restaurants that engage in animal cruelty. If you’re really serious about getting your karma onto the straight and narrow, you could become a vegan. But even minor changes like eating less meat do a little good. Every tiny change adds up.
Never think you’re limited by your circumstances or abilities. Use what time and talents you have, make little changes, put forth a bit of effort each day, and you can change the world for the better.
Farm Sanctuary: Power to End Abuse of Sick Pigs and Protect America’s Health Lies in President Obama’s Hands
On One Year Anniversary of President Obama’s Ban on Downed Cattle Entering the Food Supply, Farm Sanctuary Delivers Petition Seeking Same Legal Protections for Pigs and other Downed Animals
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – March 15, 2010 – Today, on the one year anniversary of President Barack Obama’s federal ban on sick and injured cattle entering the U.S. food supply, Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, will hand-deliver a petition to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) signed by over 15,000 individuals urging the President to act quickly and extend those same legal protections to debilitated pigs and all other “downed” farm animals. The petition, which accompanies a formal petition for rulemaking, comes at a time when the USDA is under heavy fire for failing to act on reports of illegal, inhumane and unsafe slaughterhouse practices — including shocking and butchering days-old calves too sick or weak to stand and illegally butchering pigs while they were still conscious — cited by one of its chief Food Safety and Inspection Service’s supervisory veterinarians.
Further underscoring the urgency of a federal ban to protect downed animals, recent media coverage of videotape evidence showing slaughterhouse workers beating, kicking, shocking and dragging sick and injured pigs to get them onto killing floors led thousands of Americans to sign Farm Sanctuary’s Petition for the Pigs. In addition to the pain and suffering inflicted upon the animals, the petition also asserts that the health of the American people is put at risk every time one of these debilitated animals enters the food supply. Science has shown that downed animals — the innocent victims of factory farm stresses and irresponsible transportation methods — are at an increased risk for disease, and that their hides can become contaminated during the hours or days they are often left to suffer, laying on the ground, without food, water or veterinary care.
“The slaughter of downed animals for human food is not only grossly inhumane, it is a serious threat to the health and safety of the American people,” said Farm Sanctuary President and Co-founder Gene Baur. “Last week’s Congressional hearing demonstrated that the USDA has tended to protect the abusive, profit-driven interests of big agribusiness at the expense of the well-being of the American people and the animals entrusted to our care. We urge President Obama to demand that the USDA extend legal protections to downed pigs and other farm animals. Like all animals, farm animals have feelings, and they deserve to be protected from cruelty.”
More than seven years ago Congress told the USDA to issue regulations to prevent the abuse of downed pigs and other animals, but the agency has failed to comply. As a result, downer pigs — an estimated 100,000 to more than 900,000 a year — continue to be subjected to intolerable cruelty.
Since 1986, Farm Sanctuary has made great strides for suffering animalsthrough the No Downers Campaign, including the first ever U.S. downed animal protection laws and the first successful convictions of stockyards for downed animal cruelty. One year ago today, the organization’s work led to President Obama’s announcement of a new USDA rule that bans the slaughter of cattle who become downed at any time for human consumption. While that rule was a step in the right direction, Farm Sanctuary remains determined to win legal protections for downed pigs and all other farm animals.

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, Farm Sanctuary has worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the “food animal” industry through research and investigations, legal and institutional reforms, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Farm Sanctuary shelters in Watkins Glen, N.Y., and Orland, Calif., provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming. We, the undersigned worldwide, demand stricter penalties against animal abuse and animal cruelty. Animals deserve protection against abusers. The Netherlands should start to give these innocent creatures this protections! Stop talking and promising and start acting!
Horrible animal abuse in the Netherlands! And Stafford terrier dog has been starved to death for months. The poor dog lived in an nearly abandoned house without food or enough water! The dogs owner reported the dog himself because he was wondering if the dog could be saved? How ignorant can you be to think this dog can be saved??!!The dog has got no body mass left over and all of its bones are sticking out of his body! It's time the Netherlands start showing some balls and start punishing these abusers!
This is just one of the many incidents which happens every day. How can the Netherlands let this go unpunished? Why doesn't the Government take proper action against animal abusers? People who abuse and torture animals are also capable of torturing and abusing humans!
Laying to waste fur industry claims that liberated mink do not survive in the wild, a recent study published in April 2009 studies the survival rate of captive-bred mink when released. The study, done in partnership with Oxford University, tracked the survival of released mink over eight years. The study found that none of the released mink died directly due to lack of survival skills.
For years, anecdotal evidence and quotes from wildlife biologists supported the possibility of high survival rates for released mink. For example, view this article on a (now removed) blog post from a Utah woman finding a mink in her yard near the McMullin Fur Farm, 18 months after it was raided by the Animal Liberation Front.
The Mink Release Study
The study (viewed here), is titled “The survival of captive-born animals in restoration programmes – Case study of the endangered European mink Mustela lutreola“.
The study set out to answer the following questions:
1. What is the survival rate of released mink and how does it change with time since release? 2. Do age, sex of an individual, and the conditions in which it is kept prior to release, affect its subsequent survival in the wild? 3. What are causes of mortality?
A few of the factors which could mitigate the relevance of this study are:
*The study was done with endangered European mink, not the commonly farmed North American mink. *The study did not specify how many generations the mink had been bred in captivity (though, as reprinted below, it concluded this was not relevant to survival).
Mink Release Study Highlights
*”There was no evidence that the number of generations for which the lineage of the released individuals had been bred in captivity had any effect on survival.”
*Released mink survived for “up to 39 months”
*”The main cause of death was other carnivores and raptors, although this broad categorization may conceal a diversity of fatal scenarios.”
*(Only)”…three deaths were caused by humans: one was shot, the second was hit by a car and the third was beaten to death when venturing into a farmyard.”
*A quarter of the released European mink died within the first ten days. Survival decreased by half in 38 days and then stabilized….Overall, we conclude that mink adapt to the wild c. 1–1.5 months after release.”
*No mink were found to have died (directly) due to lack of survival skills.
*”The results show that genetically managed, long-term breeding programs within the zoo community can be a source of individuals for re-introductions”.
The study includes graphs charting survival rates and more.
Fur Industry Lies
In the wake of mink liberations by the A.L.F., the fur industry’s stock-response, without exception, is that released mink will not survive in the wild. They are likely to have no comment on this recent study, which proves these soundbites to be false.
Conclusion
Now we have a study published in partnership with a major university, in a credible academic journal, proving what the Animal Liberation Front and critical thinkers have believed for years: farm-raised mink retain their wild instincts, and when released, can reassimilate successfully into their native habitat.
