Jeremy Goodman is a veteran who was severely injured by a roadside bomb while fighting in Iraq in 2005. Since then, he has spent a lot of time in hospital receiving medical care. Three months ago, he had to undergo back surgery and needed someone to care for his Pit bull Jordan while he was away. He ended up leaving his dog in the care of Riverside Pet Resort, a local kennel in Washington.
Jeremy said, "It's been an ongoing battle every since 2005. You know I feel like I've stayed in the hospital more than I have at home, but I can't wait to see my dog."
Mike Broadwell, the owner of the kennel, has taken care of Jordan and decided to waive Jeremy's boarding bill of $1,200 because he was touched by Jeremy's story. "It touched my heart, it touched us a lot and we wanted to do a lot for him, so keeping Jordan was one small thing we could do to help with his struggles that he goes through every day."
When Jordon saw Jeremy he jumped up and gave Jeremy a welcoming lick on the face, and the pair were happily reunited.

A Canadian dog owner says his pet was unfairly sentenced to death in a clear-cut case of discrimination.
Christos Papakostas bid a painful farewell to his pitbull Wicca outside a Montreal courtroom on Monday. The dog was subsequently seized and taken away to be euthanized.
The city of Montreal said that Wicca bit a woman in June, and then nipped an ambulance technician who had been called to the scene to treat her. Attorney Elaine Rosenberg won a stay of execution for Wicca while trying to appeal her death sentence, and says there is no evidence of merit in the case.
“All I saw was a photo of the victim, the first victim, and yes, she had been scratched, but to say that she was bitten was a stretch,” said Rosenberg. “There was no written testimony from her surrounding any of the facts of the case.”
Papakostas said Wicca simply jumped on the two alleged victims because she was excited. “She got spooked. Yes. She bit? We don’t know. The lady never went to the hospital. She never got stitches. She only got Polysporin on her,” said Papakostas.
Rosenberg maintains that sentencing animals without evidence is a slippery slope that should frighten all dog owners. The city, on the other hand, said it was satisfied with the ruling.
A petition to save Wicca has been signed by thousands of concerned dog owners angered by the ruling, and according to a new update from the Save Wicca Facebook page, the animal shelter she was sent to is refusing to euthanize her. They say the Berger Blanc shelter claims that she’s a good dog and doesn’t deserve to be killed, so they will not carry out court orders to put her down.
UPDATE (7/26/12): Ignoring thousands of requests to spare her life, the city of Montreal has killed Wicca. The following message was posted to the Save Wicca page tonight:
R.I.P. my little girl. Please forgive me, WE know it’s not your fault for getting scared. I want you to forgive me for this cruel way you had to leave me , I really thought we would grow old together. I tried the best I could to keep you happy and healthy i even got a king size just for you to have more room to sleep with me, it’s been very lonely without you here.
I’m gonna miss waking up at your bad smelling breath. You saved my life and I thank you for that, you ware the best friend i ever had, you always looked out for me, but now look out for me from up there, trust me it’s safer for you then this cruel would we live in.
BTW go find my grandfather and keep him some company i’m sure you’ll love him too just as much you loved all of US, we will miss having you licking our feet, faces, hands, I’ll miss cleaning up after you when you drink, poop, when you would go thru the garbage.

I am writing to express my concern following the recent media coverage of experiments carried out at the University on cats and kittens. One experiment involved a group of kittens raised in complete darkness from birth for periods of up to 12 weeks while others were deprived of the sight in one eye by having their eyelids sewn shut. Under anaesthesia, artificially ventilated and injected with a drug to paralyse eye movements, the kittens were subjected to highly invasive head surgery during which the skin was cut away, the skull was opened and the brain was exposed for recordings. Following tests, the animals were killed and parts of their brains removed for analysis.
Research of this nature raises strong ethical concerns as well as questions of scientific validity. There are substantial differences in structure and function of the visual system in cats versus human beings. Sophisticated methods of studying vision and the neurologic processes underlying it in human beings already exist. Not only are your studies inhumane, they are unnecessary for human health.
At a time when there is increasing public awareness and growing concern surrounding animal research, I find it unacceptable for kittens to be used in these experiments. This experiment was publicly funded by the Medical Research Council and it is important that academic institutions, such as Cardiff University, are held accountable for the pain and suffering they inflict on animals.
I urge the Council of the University of Cardiff to end all experiments on cats and kittens.

Persbericht : ATTORNEY FOR CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON CONFIRMS SEA SHEPHERD’S BELIEFS: JAPAN IS SEEKING TO EXTRADITE WATSON Watson’s Lead Counsel Has Learned an Extradition Request from the Japanese Embassy Was Submitted July 19th to the German Foreign Office FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. — July 26, 2012 — The Japanese Government is again stopping at nothing in their quest to bring an end to Captain Paul Watson’s efforts to cease their illegal whaling activities. German Counsel for Watson — the iconic marine conservationist, founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and focus of the hit docu-reality TV series “Whale Wars” who departed Germany after being held for 70 days for extradition to Costa Rica — has confirmed the Japanese Embassy submitted a request to the German Foreign Office to extradite Watson to Japan. Germany had been proceeding with Watson’s extradition to Costa Rica. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society had concerns that Watson's life would be in danger or he would be extradited to Japan. Today, those suspicions were confirmed by Watson's attorney. “I received confirmation today from Germany’s General Public Prosecutor that Japan filed an extradition request against Paul Watson on July 19th,” said Oliver Wallasch, lead German Counsel for Captain Paul Watson. “Germany was proceeding with Captain Watson’s extradition to Costa Rica and, once there, there is no doubt he would have been delivered into Japanese custody,” said Susan Hartland, Administrative Director for Sea Shepherd. “Upon being extradited to Japan, he would not have received a fair trial and would never have seen the outside of a prison again,” she added. Even with a rumored bounty of at least $25K on his head by shark-finners in Costa Rica, Watson was prepared to go to Costa Rica of his own volition (not via extradition) and answer to charges of a violation of ship traffic involving water cannon usage back in 2002. However, he then learned his arrest had caught Japan’s attention and they contacted the German Ministry of Justice to strike a deal with them. This deal would involve Germany not objecting to a request made by Japan to Costa Rica to turn Watson over to Japan. Japan has in the past attempted to have Captain Watson arrested through an Interpol ‘red notice,’ but they have not been granted that ‘red notice’ because Interpol has not seen any validity in the request. In fact, Interpol held the same position with the Costa Rican warrant; it was dismissed. Yet Germany arrested Captain Watson on May 13th despite the politically motivated warrant and decided to entertain the request by Costa Rica on a bilateral basis — on behalf of both Costa Rica and Japan. “Japan’s attempts to broker backroom deals with Germany and Costa Rica along with bringing litigation against Sea Shepherd in the U.S. are desperate attempts to stop Captain Watson and will never thwart Sea Shepherd’s continued work to protect our oceans,” said Hartland. “We operate under the United Nations World Charter for Nature to uphold international conservation laws and directly intervene against illegal activities on the high seas. Japan is under the false impression that if they jail Captain Watson, they will halt our campaigns to protect ocean wildlife. It’s time Japan realizes nothing they do will stop us from protecting whales and other marine wildlife for future generations everywhere,” she added. Captain Watson had been detained in Germany for 70 days despite thousands of letters of support sent to the German Ministry of Justice from the public, celebrities, politicians and other luminaries arguing for his release of these politically motivated warrant. He was arrested in Frankfurt on May 13th on a 10-year-old warrant from Costa Rica while en route to Cannes, France. He was being detained in Germany for extradition to Costa Rica for an alleged “violation of ships’ traffic,” which occurred during the 2002 filming of the award-winning documentary, “Sharkwater.” The specific incident took place on the high seas in Guatemalan waters, when Sea Shepherd encountered an illegal shark-finning operation run by Costa Rican vessel, the Varadero. On order of Guatemalan authorities, Sea Shepherd instructed the crew of the Varadero to cease their shark-finning activities and head back to port to be prosecuted. While escorting the Varadero back to port, the tables were turned and a Guatemalan gunboat was dispatched to intercept the Sea Shepherd crew. To avoid the Guatemalan gunboat, Sea Shepherd then set sail for Costa Rica, where the crew uncovered even more illegal shark-finning activities in the form of dried shark fins by the thousands on the roofs of industrial buildings.

This is MIRANDA, she was found at the side of the road in Patra GREECE with wire embedded around her neck. She also has a large tumor growth, we believed she was hung but by GOD's strenght managed to get free. Miranda survived and was evacuated to Germany. She looks great these days and the terrible wound around her neck has healed fantastic.

The men, who caused cruelty to pigs by hitting and throwing them, have been told they could face prison at the Norwich Magistrates’ Court in Norfolk today. Animal Equality’s shocking footage from the two-month investigation into this ‘Quality Assured, Red Tractor’ farm, has led to the conviction of Geoffrey Towell, 54, from East Harling in Norfolk, and James Dove, 27, from Wymondham in Norfolk.
The men, who caused cruelty to pigs by hitting and throwing them, have been told they could face prison at the Norwich Magistrates’ Court in Norfolk today.
Animal Equality’s shocking footage from the two-month investigation into this ‘Quality Assured, Red Tractor’ farm, has led to the conviction of Geoffrey Towell, 54, from East Harling in Norfolk, and James Dove, 27, from Wymondham in Norfolk.
Animal welfare inspectors attended Harling Farm in East Harling on February 10 after being made aware of footage. Geoffrey Towell this morning pleaded guilty to five counts of cruelty to pigs and piglets, contrary to Animal Welfare Act 2006, by hitting five sows with a plastic pipe - one 35 times, unlawfully killing three pigs by hitting them on the head with a metal bar, and using unnecessary force to handle piglets. He also pleaded one charge of failing to protect pigs from pain and suffering, contrary to the Animal Welfare Act 2006, by lifting pigs by the ears and dropping them from waist height.
James Dove, 27, from Wymondham in Norfolk pleaded guilty to two charges of cruelty by hitting sows with a plastic pipe and throwing pigs over a barrier - contrary to section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. He also pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to protect pigs from suffering by lifting them with excessive force, lifting pigs by the ear and leg, dropping them to the ground and kicking them while moving them - contrary to section 9 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
The mens’ solictors said in court that they both “express remorse for their actions”. The case has been adjourned for sentencing until August 17 at 2pm so probation reports can be prepared.
A third man had accepted a formal caution.
"..I noticed the same pig with a broken leg that we saw on Monday. Now he was worse and unable to stand. “That needs knocking on the head”, Geoff said. Before I knew it he had taken an iron bar shaped like a golf club from the gate. He swung it into the air and aimed for the pig’s head shouting “Four!” He smashed the pig’s head four times. The pig screamed in agony, dropped to the floor and convulsed in his faeces. Geoff dragged him out the way of the gate before leaving, and the pig lay there, screaming and writhing on the floor...” - Investigator's diary (17/08/2011).

A trio of depraved individuals from Tamworth, Staffordshire, England was sentenced in court on Wednesday for an unbelievable act of animal cruelty.
Today, the Daily Mail announced details of the sentencing for James Perks, 74, his wife Lorraine, 49 and Stephen Jenkins, 35.
The trio, who are described as "breeders," have been sentenced to 25 weeks in prison and banned from owning animals for the rest of their lives.
The trio was arrested last year after RSPCA investigators discovered two Jack Russell terrier puppies buried alive in the backyard of their Tamworth home.
An RSPCA investigator describes the horror or finding a still-alive puppy beneath the freshly turned dirt,
“ It was crying but still had the strength to nip her, then there was another puppy, he too was alive, just.
All these three defendants knew the puppies were alive before they were buried.
The surviving dogs at the residence were being kept in conditions described as "appalling."
The man defending Stephen Jenkins stated:
“ My client lacks intelligence, but he accepts that he has buried two live animals.
The investigators who responded to the call last year were horrified by the conditions and stunned that the puppies were buried alive.
Unfortunately, veterinary care could not save the puppies, who were too far gone by the time they were released from their backyard grave.
The Magistrate who sentenced the abusive trio appeared to be as disgusted by their actions as the investigators, stating:
“ 'I am sentencing you each to 25 weeks in prison, this is the maximum sentence of our powers, if we could send you to prison for longer we would do.

Burgemeester De Klerck van Blankenberge heeft Vlaams minister voor Leefmilieu en Natuur Joke Schauvliege nu verzocht het beschermd statuut van de meeuwen op te heffen om “op een flexibele en efficiënte manier hun populaties tot normale proporties te herleiden” (sic!). Vogelbescherming Vlaanderen roept op tot verdraagzaamheid. Verdere update : "Sea Shepherd-kapitein Paul Watson is Duitsland ontvlucht" UPDATE Paul Watson, de oprichter van de activistische natuurorganisatie Sea Shepherd, heeft zijn borgtochtregeling geschonden en heeft Duitsland verlaten. Dat heeft zijn advocaat deze middag aan de rechtbank laten weten. Eerder vandaag raakte bekend dat de Duitse rechter had geoordeeld dat Watson uitgeleverd mag worden uitgeleverd aan Costa Rica.
De Canadees, die ook een Amerikaans paspoort heeft, werd in mei vrijgelaten nadat hij een borgsom van 250.000 euro had betaald. Costa Rica zoekt hem omdat hij de bemanning van een schip in gevaar zou hebben gebracht bij een confrontatie met haaienvissers in 2002. Hij zou ze met een waterkanon bedreigd en aangevallen hebben.
"Ondergedoken" Watson mocht Duitsland niet verlaten totdat er beslist werd over zijn uitlevering. De stichter van Sea Shepherd zou nu ondergedoken leven, meldden bronnen. Volgens zijn advocaat is de activist inmiddels "met onbekende bestemming" vertrokken.
In een interview met Planet Watch verklaarde Watson onlangs dat een uitlevering aan Costa Rica "zijn dood" zou betekenen, omdat in Costa Rica een beloning van 25.000 dollar is uitgeschreven voor wie hem kan vinden. Dat gebeurde in 2002, na de aanvaring met de haaienvissers.
"Eerlijk proces" Toen president Laura Chinchilla van Costa Rica Duitsland in mei bezocht, zei ze dat Watson in haar land een eerlijk proces zou krijgen. De man riskeert zes tot vijftien jaar cel. De acties van Sea Shepherd worden voortgezet, ook al moet hij naar de gevangenis, meldde de voortrekker van de milieuorganisatie eerder.

There’s something sinister going on in the city of Houston, a crime even more deplorable than the widespread abandonment we have all come to know and dread. It seems that someone, or more likely, a group of people, have been targeting and torturing abandoned animals in a macabre game of cat and mouse.
“After hearing about a horrible puppy massacre on the banks of the San Jacinto river near Houston, I went to investigate,” explains volunteer Rhonda Heffernan. “Upon arriving I found the bodies of five tortured terrier/ chihuahaua mix puppies. Other terrified dogs were hiding in the woods.”
Though the local media is beginning to take an interest in what’s going on here, no one culprit has been identified. And worse yet, it’s suspected that there may be several.
“We have found dogs decapitated, hit by cars, shot with pellet guns and regular guns, dismembered and we have eye witness reports of people running dogs over with 4-wheelers,” Rhonda says with absolute heartbreak. “With the help of a few dedicated volunteers, we have rescued 45 dogs from the two dump sites, but official help is still needed.”

The goals of this volunteer group are to: stop the abandonment with the help of law enforcment and public awareness campaigns rescue any other unfortunate souls, both dogs and cats, that end up at these dump areas establish an educational effort in the area
Facebook group here) has placed a billboard near the dumping area and have also had a spay/neuter day with the help of SNAP Houston. Today they need financial help and are eager to accept any animal rescue/advocacy group support from elsewhere in the country.
They’ve turned to the Harmony Fund for help in raising funds to cover the costs of several recently abandoned dogs. Veterinary care is usually quite substantial and includes treatment for an array of injuries as well as common afflictions such as heartworm and mange. Jonge gorilla's vernielen vallen van stropers BRUSSEL — Jonge gorilla's kunnen een door stropers uitgezette val onklaar maken. Natuurbeschermers zagen het deze week gebeuren in Rwanda. Het is voor het eerst dat zoiets wordt geobserveerd bij jonge berggorilla's. De berggorilla is sterk bedreigd.
De opmerkelijke actie werd uitgevoerd door drie berggorilla's in het Rwandese gedeelte van het Virungagebergte. Twee jonge dieren en een zwartrug, een onvolwassen mannetje, werkten samen om twee valstrikken onschadelijk te maken.
Indrukwekkend "We wisten dat gorilla's dit deden maar in al de gemelde gevallen ging het om volwassenen gorilla's, meestal zilverruggen", zegt programmadirecteur Veronica Vecellio van het Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund op de blog van de organisatie. "De manier waarop ze het deden, getuigt van een indrukwekkende cognitieve vaardigheid."
Enkele dagen voordien was een jonge gorilla gedood in een gelijkaardige val. De experts vermoeden dat de jonge gorilla's op die manier in de gaten kregen hoe de vallen werken.
De opmerkelijke waarneming werd gedaan door John Ndayambaje, die voor het Dian Fossey-fonds de verzameling van de veldgegevens coördineert. Hij had een val gezien dichtbij de groep gorilla's. Omdat de groep in de richting van de val ging, wilde hij die onklaar maken. Maar een zilverrug, een volwassen mannetje, gromde naar hem.
"Op hetzelfde moment renden de jonge gorilla's Dukore en Rwema, samen met de zwartrug Tetero, naar de val en samen trokken ze de tak weg waaraan het touw vastzit", valt op de blog te lezen. "Ze zagen een andere val dichtbij en even snel als voordien vernielden ze de tweede tak en trokken ze het touw uit de grond."
Trage dood Het team van Ndayambaje verwijderde nog vier andere vallen in hetzelfde gebied. In de regio hebben stropers duizenden dergelijke vallen uitgezet om dieren zoals antilopen te vangen voor eigen consumptie. Regelmatig belanden gorilla's, vaak jonge exemplaren, in zulke vallen.
De val wordt vaak gemaakt met takken en touw, niet zelden scherp nylontouw, dat zich om het dier spant als het erin terechtkomt. Door de snijwonden kunnen de dieren een trage dood sterven.
Zwaar bedreigd De berggorilla is een zwaar bedreigde soort die in het Virungagebergte leeft. De bergen strekken zich uit over Rwanda, Oeganda en Congo. Er zijn minder dan achthonderd berggorilla's over.
De Amerikaanse biologe Dian Fossey (1932-1985) gaf de aanzet tot een herstel van de populatie. Van 1989 tot 2003 groeide het aantal berggorilla's met 17 procent, ondanks de burgeroorlogen, die honderdduizenden vluchtelingen naar het leefgebied van de gorilla's hebben gedreven. Tegen 2010 was de populatie opnieuw met een kwart aangegroeid.
Maar de bedreiging is verre van voorbij, zeggen natuurbeschermers. "Vandaag kunnen we trots melden dat ook de gorilla's hun deel van het werk doen!", zegt Veronica Vecellio.
