A man set himself on fire Wednesday outside Ungar Furs in Portland, Oregon. After dousing himself with gasoline, he attempted to enter the store, shouting “There are animals dying! Animals dying!” After police extinguished the flames, he was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital where he later died.
The man was identified as 26-year-old Daniel Shaull from Kansas. Among the local activists I have spoken to, none are familiar with Shaull by name, nor recognized him as being a part of the active, long-running campaign against Ungar Furs. Yet the location and witness reports strongly indicate this man sacrificed himself to bring attention to the horrific treatment of animals on fur farms.

Ungar Furs is a retail fur store in Portland which has been the target of a prolific campaign by local activists. Ungar became a target after frequent protests successfully closed another Portland fur store, Schumacher Furs. The owners of Schumacher Furs gave animal rights activists full credit for shutting them down in 2007.
Amidst a range of speculation as to the man’s true motives, I think it is important to assume this is a genuine action by a person driven to make the ultimate sacrifice by the severity of animal suffering. When every legal channel to affect change is closed, people will increasingly be driven to actions which bring both attention to the plight of animals, and a disruptive effect to those who kill them.
Shaull is not the first to give his life in the U.S. animal liberation struggle. This is a time to remember William Rodgers, who took his life in an Arizona jail in 2005 while being held for numerous Animal Liberation Front actions. It is also a time to remember Alex Slack, who took his life while awaiting trial for the A.L.F. bombing of the Utah Fur Breeder’s Agricultural Cooperative in 1999.

This is with reference to the Stray Dogs being beaten to death in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is shocking and extremely disheartening to see such brutal, inhumane and horrible treatment given to animals in a country like India. India is supposed to be amongst the few countries that has mercy for its animals and have laws against cruelty written in its Constitution. Despite this fact, one has witnessed the most horrible and unimaginable torture to dogs in Meerut. India has a vast and enormous history and a culture which is known all over the world. In a country where great men like Mahatma Gandhi are born who always preached Non-Violence and Peace for all living beings, it is sad to see that the government authorities have done nothing to punish the guilty in this incident. Uttar Pradesh is a state which attracts thousands of tourists from across the globe for its magnificent historic culture including Taj Mahal.
Tourists from different parts of the world come to India because of its rich history and culture. But such incidents of cruelty and inhumanity can put India in bad light in front of the tourists. The tourism industry of India is thriving and flourishing and plays a vital role in the economy. This specific incident has shocked and shaken my very belief in humanity and makes me feel ashamed to be called a Human Being. It is in our tradition to even worship animals then how come we allowed such kind of cruelty to take place. Animals have an equal right to live on this earth as we do. God has created this world for both of us to co-exist. Animals do not have a voice like you and me to protest or speak out, but that doesn’t mean we dominate them and abuse them in this manner. Such incidents must stop and we must let the animals also live a peaceful and happy life. In this man-animal conflict, animals always tend to suffer because there is no one to think about them. We become so selfish that we forget God didn’t create this world for only us.
I request the government to take measures to end this cruelty. With technological advancements and development and also help of NGOs like BlueCross society of India and PETA government can have to dogs neutered and spayed as per the latest techniques so that their population is controlled and they don’t become a hindrance to the human beings. Dogs are supposed to be man’s best friend and there are numerous occasions and incidents where Dogs have proved their loyalty and sincerity. But have we human beings ever shown our Loyalty and Commitment??
I urge to government to take strict actions against those guilty and punish them to set an example for those people who abuse animals. This punishment should be strict enough so that next time if a person tries to abuse an animal, he/she should think 100 times about the punishment.

On 16th February 2010, with the Local Council consent and permission from the Extremaduran Government, a helpless donkey will be dragged onto the streets of Villanueva to make him participate in a ritual that makes him suffer, where he is ill treated and he endures an unnatural and cruel treatment.
Law 5/2002 from the Animal Protection Act of Extremadura forbids these practices that, regretfully, are still carried out with the Council’s complicity and the silence of the Extremaduran Government and the regional press, that hides from the public eye the true nature of this ritual.
El Refugio del Burrito wants the Law to be enforced, and this law is clear on this matter. Article 4.1a) in Law 5/2002 incorporates the prohibition: “ Use of animals in shows, fights, popular celebrations and any other activities which may imply cruelty or ill treatment or make them the objective of unnatural treatment”. All of these cases happen during the Corrida de Elecciones ritual and it is an obligation of the Council’s to enforce this prohibition.

The "Peropalo" celebrations take place every year in Villanueva de la Vera. “Peropalo” is a Carnival related celebration that has been declared as a Celebration of Regional Touristic Interest which has important cultural and anthropological value.
This celebration is held over several days and there are different rituals taking place. On Carnival Tuesday, however, a donkey is used in one of these rituals, known as the "Corrida de Elecciones". The use of the donkey includes cruelty and ill treatment, causing the donkey to suffer and making it the object of unnatural treatment.
Law 5/2002 of the Extremaduran Community’s Animal Protection Act clearly forbids this kind of practice.
In view of the imminent Carnival Celebrations in Villanueva de la Vera, including the "Corrida de Elecciones" we want to make you aware of these facts so you can, in your position as President of the Junta de Extremadura, take the pertinent measures to prevent the use of a donkey in this celebration, as it is a clear breach of Extremadura Animal Protection Law 5/2002. In this way we will ensure compliance with the FIRST FINAL DISPOSITION in the afore mentioned Law.

If you read a recent front page story of the SF Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines.
She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat.
She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.
A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate ) and radioed an environmental group for help.
Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she wasso bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.
When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles.
She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudgedthem, pushed them gently around - she was thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.
The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.
May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surroundedby people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you.

Nis - Servië: 3e Hulpactie-van-de-Maand (januari 2010)
Voor de eerste hulpactie van het nieuwe jaar, hebben wij gekozen om hulp te gaan bieden aan de schrijnende toestand in het asiel van Jelena Kostic in Nis, Servië, waar ruim 500 honden in de open lucht moeten verblijven.
Wij werden door een van onze trouwe donateurs attent gemaakt, op de geweldige mensen van de Belgische stichting Straydogs, die een tweetal grote asielen in Roemenië en Servië onder hun hoede hebben genomen.

Nadat Nancy Dequeker en Anne Levieux van deze stichting in april 2008, eerst de 600 honden van het grote asiel in Slatina / Roemenië, van een plotselinge hongersdood hadden weten te redden en deze vervolgens d.m.v. vele acties allen van een warm hok hebben weten te voorzien, willen zij nu de honderden dieren in het asiel van Jelena Kostic in Servië gaan helpen.
Nis is de op twee na grootste stad van Servië en telt ruim 250.000 inwoners. Er wordt daar nog op een ouderwetse en harteloze manier met zwerfhonden omgegaan. De kleine vrachtauto's van de hondenvangers 'patrouilleren' nog steeds door de straten, met honden die door de tralies de mensen een laatste keer aankijken. Naar mensen die hen in de steek laten...
Een jonge vrouw, Jelena Kostic, was toen ze nog pas net van school kwam al zo begaan met het immense dierenleed in haar woonplaats, dat ze direct na haar studie besloot om deze dieren te gaan helpen. Met een paar mensen huurde ze een stuk grond, om honden uit het locale dodingsstation te kunnen halen en van een wrede dood te redden.
Inmiddels zitten er meer dan 400 volwassen honden, met daarbij nog vele puppies (en een paar poezen). Honden en pups worden constant voor hun asiel gedumpt. Het lijkt nooit te stoppen. Ze krijgen geen enkele hulp of steun van het stadsbestuur. Die financieren alleen het dodingsstation en de dierenartsen, die met het verschrikkelijk wrede T61 de honden een langzame dood bezorgen.
Zoals op de foto's te zien is, gaat het hier om een héél arm asiel. De helft van de honden zit in kleine kennels, de andere helft hangt nog aan de ketting, omdat er gewoonweg geen geld is om kennels te kopen. Ook zijn slechts eeen 100-tal teefjes gesteriliseerd en nog slechts een 20-tal reu's gecastreerd. Maar aan sterilisaties wil ze hoge prioriteit geven en alle dieren die voor adoptie in aanmerking komen, worden eerst onvruchtbaar gemaakt. Er is dus nog veel te doen!

Gelukkig worden er regelmatig honden geadopteerd via een Oostenrijkse stichting. Maar er komen ook weer nieuwe honden bij: 's nachts vastgebonden aan het buitenhek en natuurlijk haalt Jelena ook nog geregeld honden uit het dodings-station.
Wij willen Jelena en haar vele dieren graag gaan helpen. Doet u met ons mee? Wij zijn van plan om een goed gevuld transport te gaan organiseren om haar te verrassen met veel voedsel, medicijnen en misschien zelfs wat stevige hondenhokken of bouwmaterialen daarvoor. De chauffeurs Jeanette en André hebben al toegezegd om mee te willen werken.
HOE KUNT U MEEHELPEN ?
- Door het verzamelen van dierenvoer, dekens, dekbedden, manden, voederbakken, riemen en hondenspeelgoed.
- Ook hout, schroeven en isolatiematerialen zijn van harte welkom, zodat deze door de locale timmerman, voor de dieren in elkaar gezet kunnen worden.
- En dan is geld natuurlijk ook heel nuttig! Niet om zo maar te geven, maar om concrete zaken van te betalen, zoals voor materialen t.b.v. sterilisaties en andere operaties. Wij zullen daar samen met Nancy en Anne goed op toezien!
Want u weet het, Stichting Dierennood garandeert dat echt iedere gedoneerde euro voor 100% alleen aan de dieren besteed zal worden. Geen declaraties, geen overbodige franje....

Nu zijn de dieren aan de beurt!
Er is de laatste anderhalve eeuw veel veranderd. 150 jaar geleden werd de slavernij afgeschaft. Het was 100 jaar terug dat vrouwen gelijke rechten kregen als mannen.
En 50 jaar geleden werd er een begin gemaakt met het afschaffen van discriminatie van mensen in landen als de Verenigde Staten en Zuid-Afrika.
Maar er zijn nog andere levende wezens die wachten op gerechtigdheid. En dat zijn de dieren.
Stichting Dierennood wil proberen om deze gedachte zo breed mogelijk te verspreiden en in de praktijk te brengen.
Stichting Dierennood: Samen werken voor dieren die ons nodig hebben.
Gelukkig zijn er al vele organisaties in binnen- en buitenland, die zich met dierenwelzijn bezighouden.
In Nederland zijn meer dan 100 stichtingen op dit gebied actief. Meestal door projecten en initiatieven in diverse landen in bijv. Zuid- en Oost-Europa te ondersteunen.
De situatie voor dieren in dergelijke landen is absoluut niet te vergelijken met die in Nederland. Zitten er in de asielen in ons land gemiddeld 10 tot 12 honden, dat zijn er in dergelijke landen vaak meer dan 300 tot zelfs wel meer dan 1.000 in één asiel!
Dat betekent dus dat in één zo'n groot asiel bijna het zelfde aantal honden zit, als alle ruim 100 asielen in ons land bij elkaar....
De meeste problemen komen voort uit een andere mentaliteit, geen goede wetgeving en het niet beschikbaar willen stellen door locale autoriteiten van (EU + NL) subsidies die voor deze asielen bedoeld zijn.
Om het zeer trieste probleem van zwerfdieren goed aan te pakken, zijn de volgende drie zaken essentieël: educatie, sterilisaties en gerichte adopties.
Om dit in de diverse landen zo goed mogelijk van de grond te krijgen, is samenwerking tussen de diverse stichtingen in en buiten ons land noodzakelijk.
Stichting Dierennood wil dit graag mogelijk maken. Bijv.bij het innemen van gezamenlijke standpunten naar autoriteiten en de politiek.
Stichtingen die zich bezig houden met dierenwelzijn kunnen naar ons aangeven, voor welke samenwerking of hulp zij interesse hebben.

Stichting Dierennoodwil graag proberen om bestaande stichtingen te helpen en voor hen voordelen te behalen door onderlinge samenwerking.
Het begint met educatie
In de meeste landen van de wereld worden dieren slecht tot zeer slecht behandeld. Mensen menen dikwijls het recht te hebben, om voor eigen belang dieren uit te buiten en/of te mishandelen.
Voor echte structurele veranderingen zou er al op de kinderleeftijd moeten worden begonnen met educatie. Voorlichting over hoe je met dieren om zou moeten gaan.Om uiteindelijk meer respect voor dieren te verkrijgen.
Bij veschillende asielen en organisaties in binnen- en buitenland werden er al dergelijke initiatieven genomen. Wij willen de diverse educatieprojecten in kaart brengen, om tot de meest effectieve methode te komen per specifiek land.
Dit zal moeten gebeuren in overleg met locale deskundigen en autoriteiten. Ook zullen leerkrachten en ouders betrokken worden bij de uitvoering van de projecten.
Om dit te bekostigen zoeken wij samenwerking met sponsoren en met andere stichtingen of organisaties.
Stichting Dierennood heeft concrete plannen om educatie, met name bij kinderen, structureel mogelijk te maken.

Praktische informatie
Eén van de oorzaken van het onbegrip tussen mens en (huis)dier ligt dikwijls aan de informatie vóóraf. Of liever gezegd, aan het onvoldoende of in het geheel niet geïnformeerd zijn over hoe om te gaan met zo'n dier.
Wij willen graag een bijdrage aan leveren aan het beter geïnformeerd zijn over dieren, in het bijzonder over honden en hebben in samenwerking met de organisatie HondenOpvang (HUVO) van o.a. Jolanda Kap een uitgebreide handleiding voor het in huis halen van een hond op deze site opgenomen.
Loop er eens doorheen, er is voor iedere hondenbezitter veel informatie te vinden over hoe om te gaan met deze trouwe viervoeter.
Stichting Dierennood wil mensen die een dier in huis halen, helpen door het beschikbaar stellen van praktische informatie.
Sterilisaties noodzakelijk
In principe dienen de problemen van zwerfdieren locaal te worden aangepakt. Bij de zgn. 'Catch, Neuter & Return' methode, worden zoveel mogelijk honden en/of katten uit een bepaald gebied gevangen, gesteriliseerd of gecastreerd, medisch onderzocht en als het verder een gezond dier is, wordt deze weer op dezelfde plek teruggezet als waar hij/zij gevangen werd.
Op deze manier wordt voorkomen dat een ander dier opnieuw deze plek inneemt. Aangezien een gebied als leefruimte altijd een natuurlijk maximum aan dieren kan herbergen, wordt hiermee voorkomen dat de populatie verder uitgroeit.
Wanneer dit systematisch wordt uitgevoerd in goede samenwerking met de locale autoriteiten, is dit een veel diervriendelijkere en tevens effectievere methode dan het ongebreideld doden van dieren.
Het uitvoeren van dergelijke sterilisatie-projecten kunnen wij niet alleen en wij gaan daarvoor een samenwerking aan met een aantal door ons streng geselecteerde asielen in het buitenland, waarvan wij de asielhouders persoonlijk kennen.
Ook zoeken wij hiervoor partner-organisaties in binnen- en buitenland die hiervoor met ons willen samenwerken.
Stichting Dierennood wil sterilisatie/castratie projecten in diverse landen daadwerkelijk ondersteunen.

Thuis gezocht
Zitten er in Nederlandse asielen gemiddeld 10 tot 15 honden, dat zijn er in buitenlandse asielen vaak vele honderden! Bovendien is het in die landen veelal zeer moeizaam om locale adoptanten te vinden.
Wij willen graag de asielen steunen, die niet ieder dier na een sterilisatie / castratie automatisch weer terug kunnen zetten op straat. Soms is een dier daar niet toe in staat en zou het beter zijn als zo'n hond of kat ergens in een liefdevol huis zou kunnen worden opgenomen.
Gelukkig zijn er in Nederland en de omringende landen vele stichtingen die zich met adopties van honden en katten vanuit het buitenland bezighouden. De meesten daarvan zijn zeer zorgvuldig bezig en houden alleen de strengste normen aan.
Zo verlangen zij van zo'n asiel dat het dier vooraf goed beoordeeld wordt op sociaal gedrag, dat het een uitgebreide medische check ondergaat, dat er een chip wordt geplaatst en dat het natuurlijk alle noodzakelijke vaccinaties krijgt.
Vervolgens worden deze geselecteerde dieren op diverse websites geplaatst. Een aantal dieren hiervan willenwij echter extra onder uw aandacht brengen. Sommigen wachten al erg lang. Anderen zijn misschien niet zo fotogeniek. En weer anderen hebben misschien een (kleine) handicap, waardoor er minder belangstelling is.
Stichting Dierennood wil hen een extra kans geven en heeft daarom een lijst gemaakt: 'Thuis gezocht'.

Doe je wel eens mee aan die ogenschijnlijk onschuldige testjes en quizjes en op internet? Dan kan alle informatie die je daar achterlaat, doorgespeeld worden aan fabrikanten. Aan geneesmiddelenfabrikanten of zorgverzekeraars bijvoorbeeld.
De Volkskrant besteedt dit weekeind aandacht aan een fenomeen waar veel internetters helemaal niet bij stil staan. Leuk toch om via kleine online-testjes uit te zoeken of je wel de juiste baan hebt, of je vaker of minder vaak seks hebt dan je leeftijdsgenoten en welke vakantiebestemming het beste bij je past?
Maar veel van die antwoorden die je invult worden, zonder dat je het door hebt, doorverkocht aan bedrijven die maar al te graag over die gegevens willen beschikken. Zo noemt de Volkskrant het mediabedrijf Advance dat via een tiental websites gegevens verzamelt die vaak zijn gekoppeld aan televisieprogramma’s van SBS en RTL.
Het bedrijf voegt de antwoorden van verschillende online-testjes en onderzoekjes samen waardoor van 1 persoon honderden kenmerken kunnen worden gecombineerd. Dat gebeurt op allerlei gebieden, ook gezondheid.

The day of October 3rd 2008 is of historic importance for the cats and dogs in Serbia, just like October 5th 2000 is important for the citizens of Serbia. Until today, there has been no such achievement in the matter of support to the International Animal's Day.
Upon the initiative of the Animal welfare organization PRIJATELJ from Subotica and the Organization for aid to the abandoned animals Help Animals from Belgrade, on October 3rd 2008, the Veterinary Directorate of the Republic of Serbia and Standing Conference of Cities and Municipalities in Serbia, have decided to, as Mr.Zoran Micovic, Head of the Veterinary Directorate said "from this moment we will take part in the REALISATION OF THE PROJECT OF NATIONAL No Kill spay/neuter strategy in solving the problem of cats and dogs population".

Furthermore, this is a signal to all local governments in Serbia (135) to immediately start with implementation of the republic Law on Veterinary practice (The local government is obliged to organize a zoo-hygiene service on its territory for the following activities) and of the Paragraph 1 of this Article (to catch and place the abandoned animals in the animal shelters)
The signees of this Notice have started the initiative to proclaim the October 3rd 2008 for the Animal Day in Serbia, and to celebrate it each year accordingly.

To His Excellency the President of the Democracy Party, and President of Republic of Serbia :
Dear Mr. Boris Tadic
Considering that it is the duty of humans to respect animals and to ensure that these benefit from legislation which protects them in an adequate and effective way;
Considering that that duty is increasingly recognised and valued not only within the Serbian society but also across the world, and that it has been driving governments, parliaments and municipalities from several regions of the world to take advanced legislative and practical steps to protect animals;
Considering that, in spite of the latter being also a duty of the Serbian State, this state has not been matching it, or meeting its responsibilities in this field, in a satisfactory way, thus leaving Serbian`s animals cruelly abandoned and victims of the state's indifference, which, both by actions and omissions, has been permitting that many and serious harms committed against animals may happen in an environment of almost total impunity;
Considering that the Serbian State, both by not taking proactive, modern, effective and adequate legislative measures, by not even conducting a satisfactory prevention, enforcement and penalization activity regarding the existing animal protection regulations, by not forbidding cruel, unacceptable and absolutely unnecessary practises, and also by involving some of its institutions, among which are the municipalities, in the cruel treatment of animals, has originated serious problems affecting animals in the country; and also
Considering that the majority of the Serbian people - a very significant one, in many aspects, and overwhelming, in so many others - believes that animals in Serbia are, in fact, extremely unprotected and should, in several areas, be urgently and strongly protected by the Serbian State;
I call on the Serbian Parliament and urge the Democracy Party to:
1. Propose and/or approve, establish and enact a new animal protection law -to be shaped as an Animal Protection Code - that is
a) wide-ranging, in a way that it establishes animal protection regulations affecting all areas in which these are somehow used and involved,
b) coherent, clear and specific, in a way that its provisions can be understood, respected and enforced in a clear way and without causing any doubts,
c) strongly restrictive, establishing
i) unequivocally the prohibitions which are due to be defined,
ii) strong penalties to the infringements of the law, and
iii) exclusive legal permissions to hold animals in captivity and/or to inflict pain, suffering and/or death to animals only in the cases in which that is strictlynecessary and justified, also rigidly and clearly regulating those permissions, and
d) easy to enforce, in a way that the agencies and officials which are responsible for enforcing the law and making sure it is respected may execute their enforcement work in the most direct, fast and effective manner, so that the infringements may be punished as swiftly and efficiently as possible, also to be accompanied of immediate and precautionary measures to protect the affected animals%uFFFD safety and integrity measures - which should be also immediately put to practice by these very agencies and officials;
and
2. To additionally consider and incorporate in the preparation of this new animal protection law - which is requested to be established and enacted shaped as an Animal Protection Code taking into consideration all the aspects mentioned in the previous point - all the elements which are outlined and advocated in the fair, extensive and comprehensive guiding proposal for a Serbian Animal Protection Code presented in the documents NO KILL sterilisation strategy, written by Friend-EPAR/OIPAmember league www.epar.org.yu
and "Law&order&justice for all" , written by Friend-EPAR/OIPAmember league/alliance for Animal Rights www.epar.org.yu and promoted by this organisation and several other members and supporters of Alliance for Animal Rights and Serbian Animals Voice http://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/ , to accomplish a modern, effective, progressist and fair Animal Protection Code in relation to the needs of the legislative protection of animals in Serbia and to the Serbian State's duties in this field.

University of Hokkaido Professor Tetsuya Endo expresses alarm at the high levels of contamination among residents of Taiji, site of the killing of dolphins featured in “The Cove”. Dr. Endo is calling for “efforts to curb consumption of whale meat which is highly contaminated with mercury.”

The dirty secret of the largest slaughter of dolphins on Earth is that the dolphin meat being sold to an unsuspecting public in Japan is poisoned by mercury contamination.
We have brought this to public attention since we began our campaign four years ago. More recently our testing of dolphin meat and the mercury contamination issue (including the Japan government’s cover-up with a compliant media) is receiving global attention in the award-winning documentary “The Cove.”
In Taiji, Japan, the little town that slaughters a thousand dolphins a year and sells the meat in markets around Japan, one brave town council member, Mr. Yamashita, objected to the inclusion of mercury-laden dolphin meat in the town’s school lunch program, a PR gimmick by the dolphin-killers to get another young generation hooked on poisoned dolphin meat. Taiji dropped the school lunches, but unfortunately Mr. Yamashita has been shunned and left Taiji.
However, one of his legacies was a decision by the town council to test the mercury levels in Japanese citizens in Taiji. The results have been held up for months, but now enterprising reporters in Japan are bringing out the story.
The Japan-wide news service, Kyodo News, just published this story, picked up here by The Japan Times, which has been bravely printing the story of the dolphin slaughter and our Coalition work for several years.
The story states that Taiji residents, who eat dolphin meat, are showing mercury levels ten times higher than average Japanese.
The Japan media is finally getting out the story of mercury contamination in dolphin meat. As more stories appear, more reporters and editors will feel safe in investigating further.
Mercury-laden dolphin meat is a crisis that should bring an end to the dolphin slaughter in Japan, and not just in Taiji, but all across Japan.
We still have a long way to go to get this story out to the Japanese public and help organize the protest to their government to end the cover-up and the sale of dolphin meat.

TOKYO — Levels of mercury in hair samples of residents of Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, which is known for customarily eating small whales caught by coastal whaling, are about 10 times the average in Japan, possibly due to consumption of whale meat with high concentration of mercury, one of researchers who conducted the survey said Thursday.
Hair samples were collected from 30 men and 20 women living in the whaling town with a population of about 3,400 through local collaborators between December 2007 and July 2008 for testing, Tetsuya Endo, an associate professor at Health Sciences University of Hokkaido, said.
The survey showed the average total mercury levels in the men’s and women’s hair samples were 21.6 parts per million and 11.9 ppm, respectively, while the levels of average Japanese men and women are 2.55 ppm and 1.43 ppm, he said.
The highest concentration level discovered in the survey was 67.2 ppm in a male aged in his 50s, as a total of three people exceeded the level of 50 ppm for no observed adverse effect set by the World Health Organization, Endo said.
Endo expressed alarm that contamination levels among some of the residents appeared to be high enough to develop health problems according to oversea standards.
‘‘It’s necessary to conduct more detailed research on their health conditions and the current status of contamination,’’ he said. ‘‘We should also make efforts to curb consumption of whale meat which is highly contaminated with mercury.’‘
The researchers, also including Koichi Haraguchi at Daiichi College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Fukuoka, will publish the survey result in an international science magazine on oceanic pollution.
According to Endo, the researchers also discovered high levels of mercury in products made from local marine mammals and fishes, such as pilot whales, dolphins, tunas and skipjack, distributed in and around the community.
In particular, the total contamination levels in the red meat from 22 samples of pilot whales, a cetacean commonly consumed in the town, averaged 9.6 ppm, with the level for methyl mercury alone coming to 5.9 ppm, both well beyond the tentative national regulation figures of 0.4 ppm and 0.3 ppm, respectively.
Among the 50 residents tested, the average total mercury level in those who eat pilot whale once a month or more was 24.6 ppm, while the levels in those who eat it only once every several months or not at all were 15.5 ppm and 4.3 ppm, respectively.
No epidemiologic survey has been conducted in Taiji although health hazards to the residents from the consumption of whale products are suspected, according to Endo.

mi occupo di animali da sempre.faccio la gattara,raccolgo cani abbandonati o non piu' voluti,cerco di aiutare o salvare qualsiasi vita mi capita,o mi viene richiesto.collaboro con la ASL per le catture e le degenze dei gatti randagi,con il comune quando capita,o con chiunque mi chiede una mano a salvare o sistemare cani e gatti.risultato della mia "attivita'" � che mi ritrovo con la casa piena di animali,che purtroppo non si possono affidare:cani anziani ciechi,zoppi,malati,con la leishmaniosi,etc.i gatti arrivano dalle cologne e chi di gatti se n� intende lo sa che sono quasi tutti malati di fiv,felv e fip.quindi quelli che potevo affidare,ho affidato.comunque il numero in entrata e sempre maggiore a quello in uscita,se si vogliono affidare decentemente.in questo momento ho 25 cani e una trentina di gatti!un lavoro enorme che chiede dedizione,tempo,e tanto tanto amore.in seguito a una segnalazione dei vicini,che chiaramente non la pensano come me,sono usciti i vigili e i veterinari della asl,che mi hanno deto che dal 2008 esiste una legge che permette 10 animali per abitazione.i cani sono tutti regolarmente microchippati ed inscritti all'anagrafe canina.la decisione che verra' presa in seguito,sara' di portare via i cani ed i gatti(a spese comunali!!!)presso il canile sanitario,dove io ho lavorato e da dove ho ritirato una serie di animali per mancanza di cure anni fa.mi sono rivolta al comune durante questi anni per avere un pezzo di terra dove poter costruire un rifuggio,ma in Brianza la terra "costa troppo".ora la terra l'ho trovato,ma non mi permettono di utilizzarla per tutta una serie di leggi"umane"(cio� fatte dagli uomini,non dalla madre natura).la mia domanda �:invece di portate via gli animali ,spendendo piu' di 1000euro al mese),lasciate questi animali sotto la mia custodia(certi sono qui da piu' di 10 anni) e dattemi il permesso di andare a vivere su questo terreno agricolo(2000mq).in primo luogo perch� gli animali morirebbero tutti in canile,secondo,io anche per crepacuore....non chiedo soldi,non chiedo stallo per i miei animali,chiedo solo il vostro appoggio con le firme!grazie! Welke instantie, die het behoud en welzijn van wilde dieren zegt voor te staan, stelt nu een voorzitter aan die ontelbare van deze dieren met zijn moordlust de dood in heeft gejaagd. Deze wijlen prins Bernhard ging vervolgens op kosten van de leden leuke reisjes maken om daar zijn "hobby" voort te zetten Dat het WereldNatuurfond meer tegenstrijdige ideën heeft mag blijken uit onderstaande feiten !

Animal rights activists in the UK have criticised a government terrorism experiment which involved testing explosives on pigs.
Scientists wrapped eighteen pigs in Kevlar blankets and placed them several metres away from bombs to study how long they survived after serious blood loss, British newspaper the Telegraph reported.
Before the pigs were blown up they had tubes placed in their blood vessels and bladders and had their spleens removed.
But Liberal Democrat politician Norman Baker has challenged the use of the live animals in the experiment.
"These are revolting and unnecessary experiments," he said.
"It is perfectly possible to find out things we don’t know without blowing up pigs to find out."
The pigs were anaesthetised throughout the procedure.
It is hoped the experiments will provide insight in helping treat British troops caught in bomb blasts in Afghanistan, as well as terrorism attacks elsewhere.
Last week, animal rights groups decided to press charges over an abandoned Austrian experiment in which 29 pigs were buried alive under deep snow to study human survival chances in avalanches.
