As we arrived in DeSoto for our demonstration against a local slaughterer and butcher, six Johnson County Sheriff’s cars descended upon us. Despite accosting us with such a large contingency (one officer for each of us), Sergeant Jeremy Campbell was quite respectful when he approached me to find out our intentions and to state theirs. They did not interfere with our protest, though three to four of them remained parked in the vicinity throughout our demo.
Today Bite Club of KC turned its attention to Steve’s Meat Market in DeSoto, KS for three reasons:
1. Steve’s ground the 313 innocent, defenseless, sentient deer slaughtered at Death Park (by JCPRD and Anthony DeNicola) into sausage, whilst pocketing $19,000.00 of our tax dollars….
2. We wanted to protest a “meat” processing facility to honor the memory of Jill Phipps, a UK animal rights activist whom the “meat” industry murdered on 2/1/95 when one of their trucks transporting veal calves to their execution ran over her as she protested factory farming. Phipps is a martyr and a hero of the animal rights movement.
3. We wanted to show Steve’s customers and the general public that their “meat” has a face and to give them an opportunity to meet their “meat.” Wilbur, a severed pig’s head procured from a “meat” processor, served as a tactile, macabre symbol of the face of the billions of murder victims slain by the “meat” industry.

A few minutes ago, I received a call that dogs were being killed at St. John's International School at Poonamalee by chasing, beating, and finally injecting with poison.
I immediately called the school and spoke to one Mr. Selvan in their office. He refused to give me any contact numbers but after explaining to him what was happening, he called the Genaeral manager, Mr. Christo Packiaraj and called back to say that the killing had been stopped and that the General manager was in church and would call me in a little while. I told him that he would be prosecuted under the PCA and all other applicable Acts and then Mr. Packiaraj called me. He apologised for what had been done then went on to add that there were too many dogs on the campus which was why they were forced to do this!
I have contacted the Secretary of the AWBI re this also.

ANOTHER collision has occurred between a Japanese whaling vessel and an anti-whaling Sea Shepherd vessel, this time its latest to enter the fray the Bob Barker.
The anti-whaling Sea Shepherd Conservation Society said at 12.09pm today the Yushin Maru 3 intentionally rammed the Bob Barker penetrating its hull and endangering the lives of its crew.
No-one was injured.
The collision follows a collision between the space age carbon fibre trimaran Ady Gil and the Japanese whaling ship Shonan Maru 2 on January 6.
The skipper of the trimaran powerboat Capt Pete Bethune accused the Japanese ship's crew of "attempted murder'' by "deliberately ramming their boat'' into the Ady Gil but the Japanese denied they were at fault saying the Ady Gilturned deliberately in front of them.
The Ady Gil has since sunk.
Sea Shepherd society said today's "intentional ramming'' occurred about 180 miles off Cape Darnley in the Australian Antarctic Territory.
Video of the collision, which is on Sea Shepherd's website appears to show both vessels left taking evasive action until too late.
The society said the Bob Barker had been actively blocking the slipway of the Nisshin Maru, the Japanese whaling fleet's factory ship.
Four harpoon ships, the Yushin Maru1, 2 and 3 and Shonan Maru2 were circling and making near passes to the stern and bow of the Sea Shepherd vessel.
"The Bob Barker did not move from its position,'' the society said.
"At which point the Yushin Maru 3 internationally rammed the Bob Barker creating a three-foot long and four-inch deep gash in the mid-starboard side of the Sea Shepherd vessel above the waterline.
"The Bob Barker continues to block the slipway of the Nisshin Maru preventing the transfer of slaughtered whales and effectively shutting "illegal whaling operations".
"The incident demonstrates a continued escalation of violence by the illegal whalers in the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary.''
The skipper of the other Sea Shepherd vessel Captain Paul Watson on the Steve Irwin which is on route to the action said: "Because the whalers got away basicallyscot-free with the outrageous sinking of the Ady Gil they now apparently think they can do whatever they want and they appear to have no qualms about endangering Sea Shepherd crew.
"What we really need is for the governments of Australia and New Zealand to step up and start enforcing maritime laws in these waters, or who knows what the whalers will do next.
"Australian and New Zealand lives are at risk every day in these waters.''
Published: February 1, 2010 A honeybee brain has a million neurons, compared with the 100 billion in a human brain. But, researchers report, bees can recognize faces, and they even do it the same way we do.
Bees and humans both use a technique called configural processing, piecing together the components of a face — eyes, ears, nose and mouth — to form a recognizable pattern, a team of researchers report in the Feb. 15 issue of The Journal of Experimental Biology.
“It’s a kind of gluing,” said Martin Giurfa, a professor of neural biology at the University de Toulouse, France, and one of the study’s authors.
It is the same ability, Dr. Giurfa said, that helps humans realize that a Chinese pagoda and a Swiss chalet are both abodes, based on their components.
“We know two vertical lines, with a hutlike top,” he said. “It’s a house.”
In their research, Dr. Giurfa and his colleagues created a display of hand-drawn images, some faces and some not.
The faces had bowls of sugar water in front of them, while the nonfaces were placed behind bowls containing plain water. After a few failed trips to the bowls without sugar water, the bees kept returning to the sugar-filled bowls in front of the faces, the scientists found.
The images and the bowls were cleaned after every visit, to ensure that the bees were using visual cues to find the sugar and not leaving scent marks.
The researchers found that bees could also distinguish a face that provided sugar water from one that did not.
After several hours’ training, the bees picked the right faces about 75 percent of the time, said Adrian Dyer, another author of the study and a vision scientist at Monash University in Australia.
The researchers said that while they were biologists and not computer scientists, they hoped their work could be more widely used, including by face recognition experts. “If somebody else finds it interesting and it improves airport security, that’s great,” Dr. Dyer said. “The potential mechanisms can be made available to the wider facial recognition community.”
Dr. Giurfa said that the benefit of studying a creature as simple as the bee was in knowing that it did not take a complex neural network to distinguish objects. This could offer hope to technologists, he said.
“We could imagine that through repeat exposure, we may be able to train machines to extract a configuration and know that ‘This a motorbike’ or no, ‘This is rather a dog,’ ” he said.
But while the research on bees is interesting, it does not help with the most difficult problem technologists are having, said David Forsyth, a computer science professor at the University of Illinois, whose research focuses on computer vision.
That challenging problem is to build systems that can recognize the same people over a period of time, Dr. Forsyth said, after their hair has grown, or when they have sunglasses on, or after they have aged. These are all tasks that humans can usually perform but that computers struggle to replicate.
“I highly doubt that bees can tell the difference,” Dr. Forsyth said, adding, “If bees did that, I’d fall off my chair.”
Nonetheless, he said, it is important to add to the body of research on face recognition by studying animals.
While computers have become very capable at detecting faces, dependable face recognition by machines continues to be elusive.
“We know almost nothing about recognition, but it is really useful and really hard, and it helps us make decisions about the world,” Dr. Forsyth said. “Research into anything about identifying and recognizing seems to be a good thing.”

All the neighbors came out to see what was going on and activists filled them in on Dario’s long, atrocious history of abusing, torturing and killing primates and now his NEW job of going around PROMOTING it! The neighbors were actually very supportive of the activists and in fact, one neighbor told an activist and we quote, “I’ll be watching that asshole; I don’t want that piece of garbage and his family living in this neighborhood. He ought to be experimented on.” As SEVEN, count ‘em, SEVEN Culver City Police cars pulled up, one police officer walked up to the “legal observer” with her billy club out. She told her that a “few” neighbors called and complained; well, that’s what goes along with exercising free-speech rights and that’s why the founders of this country came up with the BILL OF RIGHTS! So as long as Dario goes around promoting vivisection and possibly STILL torturing animals to death in his laboratory, activists will continue to exercise THEIR free speech rights in his neighborhood.

It has been one week since a man set himself on fire outside a fur store in Portland and died. In the responses from activists that followed, there has been what I see as insulting disregard, and the few standing up to say there is a greater significance to his death.
Most sentiments on the death of Daniel Shaull fall on the side of “just another crazy person taking their life”. Activists have run for cover to deny or distance themselves from this act. I question if these responses come from an action that confronts us with some uncomfortable truths. I think we all wish our actions were as commensurate with the urgency of 10 billion non-human animals killed each year as those of Daniel Shaull, that we were capable of such a sacrifice to awaken the world to their plight.
Debates over the strategic value of self-immolation are irrelevant. As are discussions of Shaull’s mental health. I don’t think it is the place of anyone, myself included, sitting behind the safety of a computer to cast stones at someone who broke out of that safety zone and did something. Especially someone who is dead.
When someone takes their life in solitude, and in a way devoid of larger impact, we call it “tragic”. When a man takes his life outside a fur store to give his death greater significance, we call it “crazy”.
I will not rob Daniel Shaull of his last statement to this earth with such dismissiveness.

Searching for the Significance of a Life and a Death By: Cat
Yesterday, a man set himself on fire outside Ungar Furs, and burned himself to death. We know his name now: According to the Alliance, it was Daniel Shaull. And we know that what he did appears to have been in solidarity with the animals who continue to die horrible deaths, day after day after day, to keep Nicholas Ungar in business. We know that, even as he was on fire and undoubtedly in terrible pain, he mustered great strength and tried to go inside the fur store to spread the flames to the coats and garments and blood-stained profits of the last fur store in Portland.
I would like to know more.
Indeed, it was strange to find out he was someone most of us did not know. Those of us who were not there yesterday, who scrambled to find out who it was, we each had a fear in the pit of the stomach, each of us sure we would know him, each of us having someone or other in mind that it might be. I know I did. When I finally heard his name, a small sense of relief washed over me, because it was a name I did not know. But someone knew him. And he deserves his story. If you knew Daniel Shaull, please post your stories of his life here.
If you did not know him but you just want to offer your critique of self immolation as a tactic, please just keep your useless judgments to yourself. This is the morning after, the place where all the bone-pickers will come in and make dismissive claims about this man and his last act of sacrifice. You know what I’m saying. “This is going too far,” “he was just crazy,” “he was a terrorist,” “this tactic is too extremist,” and perhaps the most unforgivable of all, “this will make us all look bad.”
I’m not ready to dismiss the significance of this man’s last act so easily.
Every year, more than 50 million animals - many of them dogs and cats - die for the fur industry. They die needless, painful, and suffering deaths so that people like Nicholas Ungar can make a lot of money, and so that vain, selfish, irredeemably thoughtless people can wear those animals’ skins. Fifty MILLION beings, every single year, killed in horrific and unceasingly bizarre ways. For nothing. Absolutely nothing. Some of them are picked up by their hind legs and pounded against the cement until they die. Some have metal bars shoved into their mouths, and electrodes pressed against their anus, and are electrocuted. Some are gassed. Some are trapped in the wild, and spend days on end struggling to free themselves. Terrified, dehydrated, hungry, cold, and mutilated, they wait for the trapper to come. I have personally witnessed a fur trapper approaching a frightened little bobcat like this, right here in the woods of Cascadia, and then unceremoniously beating her over the head, repeatedly, with a baseball bat. CRACK. CRACK. CRACK. CRACK. CRACK. Until she finally died.
Sometimes, these animals are beaten unconscious, and they awaken while they are being skinned alive. This is not just some far off, urban legend thing. This is something real and immediate and horrible. I have seen this happen, and watched as the trapper just laughed and taunted the half-skinned, dying animal. Her last screams jeered at, the violation of her being complete. Her bloody little body went into a pile of bloody little bodies just like hers. Her skin was sold in someone’s garage, on the first leg of the journey to Ungar or Schumachers, or Nordstroms.
This is what Nicholas Ungar sells.
Unimaginable suffering, for nothing. A lot of people just don’t care. A lot of people think wearing fur is acceptable, and that making a living off this kind of unending suffering is tolerable. It’s the people who care that are labeled “terrorist.” The killers are just “businessmen.” Some people actually defend the practice, many more just don’t care enough to do anything about it. Still others like to get all philosophical and “tolerant” and pretend to be above it all. (I have seen a lot of that here on this site in recent days. These are the people who also defend slaughter houses, and lab experiments. Cold, academic justifications for horrific acts of violence. Is it really all that hard to understand, that someone could find that they just can’t take it any more? They just can’t stand by and do nothing, even when there is nothing left to do? Is it really so difficult to comprehend that this man could be so profoundly moved by such an unimaginable injustice, that he would be willing to actually sacrifice his own life in a last desperate act?
Not to me. I get it. I can understand that frustration and pain and desperation. I have felt it myself, and I think that any one of us who was born with the ability to empathize with non-human animals in this cold-hearted world has felt it too. We might not be lighting ourselves on fire, but deep down inside, I think we understand Daniel Shaull’s desperation and despair. Even if we did not know him, we know what it feels like to bear witness, day after day, to the intentionally inflicted pain and suffering of others, and to feel so mutely powerless to make it stop. We watch in horror as a never ending stream of animal victims is poured into the maw of human hatred and indifference. We cannot understand how humans can be so needlessly, thoughtlessly, cruel. And we cannot understand why their eyes cannot be opened to the pain and suffering they are causing. Sometimes, even our “friends” turn out to be the kind of people who either cause this suffering, or try to excuse it. God, it gets so frustrating after awhile… and it never ends.
If you care about animals in this human world, it’s easy to feel like you are alone in a sea of inexplicable hatred. It isn’t even just the people wielding the metal pipes in the slaughter houses, or the electrodes on the fur farms. It’s not just the people with the guns and the deer heads tied to the front of their “rigs.” It’s not just the people shoving load after load after load of cats and dogs into gas chambers, or the people gouging baby mice out of their mothers’ bellies in laboratories. It’s not just the assholes offering “chicken chokin” classes, or the old men making money selling furs. It’s also all the mind-numbingly cold people who build word monuments to themselves over it - defending it and justifying it and dismissing it. It’s the overwhelming awareness of all the suffering in the world, and the strange ostracism of anyone who can see it, who tries to point it out.
This can be a cold, hard world for people of compassion for the animals. Even radicals often just don’t get it.
It may actually turn out that Daniel Shaull suffered from mental illness. But in this world, I sometimes think mental illness and desperate acts might be the only sane response.

We are calling on all supporters of Marie Mason to contact the warden’s office at Waseca prison and ask that she be provided with vegan food. Mason is a vegan for ethical, medical and spiritual reasons, but the prison has denied her vegan meals since her incarceration. Because of this, she has been in ill-health, suffering from symptoms like dizziness and extreme pain in her hands.
We call on all supporters to contact the warden’s office and ask that her request for vegan food be approved. Please be very polite. Also note that currently (as of Wednesday, February 3) there is no Warden at Waseca. We expect that Warden English will be starting this position next week.

I am writing this letter concerning Marie Mason, #04672-061, who has requested the prison provide her with vegan meals to meet her health and dietary needs. I strongly encourage you to grant this request.
Marie has been committed to a vegan diet in accordance with her personal, moral and spiritual beliefs for many years. Like many vegans, she considers her diet to be an essential part of her life and spirituality. While incarcerated at Waseca, Marie has remained committed to a vegan diet, but has been unable to receive proper nutrition. She has been experiencing bouts of dizziness, nose bleeds, fatigue, and severe pain in her hands. All symptoms associated with an inadequate vegan diet.
I fear that unless the prison provides her with an adequate vegan diet, she will remain malnourished and her health may continue to suffer.
Please grant Marie’s request for a vegan diet. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

GROENEKAN - In Groenekan is vanmiddag een 10-jarig meisje op een paard ernstig gewond geraakt bij een verkeersongeluk. Ze kwam in botsing met een vrachtwagen.
Het ongeluk gebeurde op de Nieuwe Weteringseweg, de provinciale weg. Het meisje reed de weg op en werd toen geschept door de truck. Bij RTV Utrecht hebben zich mensen gemeld die zeggen dat het paard op hol was geslagen. De politie heeft die geluiden ook gehoord en onderzoekt de toedracht van het ongeluk.
Het kind is zwaargewond naar het UMC in Utrecht gebracht, maar verkeert niet in levensgevaar. Het paard heeft de klap niet overleefd.
De straffen voor mensen die dieren mishandelen gaan flink omhoog. Nu mogen ze maximaal drie jaar geen dieren houden, maar een Kamermeerderheid wil een verbod van maximaal tien jaar.

Het verbod zou moeten worden ingesteld voor bijvoorbeeld mensen die hun hond aan een boom vastbinden als ze op vakantie gaan. Ze komen er nu meestal met een boete vanaf.
CDA en PvdA willen dat mensen die dieren ernstig mishandelen, langer de cel in gaan. Of het nu hun eigen dier is of dat van iemand anders, ze moeten maximaal drie jaar cel kunnen krijgen.

DOETINCHEM - Met het verbod op bestialiteit lijkt aan de handel van het Doetinchemse bedrijf Topscore een eind te komen. Het pornobedrijf is gespecialiseerd in dierenseks. Knalroze is de gevel van het moderne bedrijfspand op het Doetinchemse bedrijventerrein Wijnbergen. Erotics, staat met grote letters op de gevel.
Het bedrijf Topscore verkoopt hier seksspeeltjes en lingerie, maar bovenal films met dierenporno. Een gouden handel, volgens het seksbedrijf Topscore. "De stekker is uit mijn branche getrokken", zegt Roy Pocorni, eigenaar van Topscore.
Topscore, voorheen een regulier pornobedrijf, specialiseerde zich jaren geleden in films met seks met dieren. De beelden worden veelal gemaakt in landen als Hongarije en Brazilië en vanuit Nederland via websites en dvd's gedistribueerd.

DEN HAAG - Een rechter moet bij het bestraffen van dierenmishandeling de dader een verbod van maximaal tien jaar kunnen opleggen voor het houden van dieren.
Dat staat in het AD.
Daartoe verdedigen CDA en PvdA donderdag een voorstel in de Tweede Kamer, dat op de steun van een Kamermeerderheid kan rekenen. Nu geldt bij dierenmishandeling nog dat de rechter een proeftijd kan opleggen, waarbij een verbod voor het houden van dieren geldt van maximaal drie jaar.
CDA en PvdA willen dat mensen die dieren mishandelen strenger worden gestraft. Daarvoor moet volgens de twee partijen ook het onderscheid verdwijnen dat nu kan worden gemaakt tussen het mishandelen van het dier van een ander of een eigen dier.
In het Wetboek van Strafrecht is een maximum gevangenisstraf van twee jaar opgenomen voor het beschadigen van andermans goederen en dieren, terwijl in de Gezondheidswet voor dieren drie jaar het maximum is voor het mishandelen van een eigen dier. Drie jaar zou volgens CDA en PvdA eveneens de maximumstraf moeten worden voor het doden van andermans dier.
Het aanhoudende winterweer wordt voor dieren steeds gevaarlijker. Ze hebben niet alleen weinig te eten. Ze hebben het ook koud.
Op het wegdek is het warmer, en daarom gaan ze daar naar toe. Met desastreuze gevolgen. Honderden dieren zijn al doodgereden. Ook maandag was het raak in de Falom, in Friesland. Daar kwamen in één keer 70 meerkoeten om het leven.
03/02 De Iraanse regering heeft woensdag een satellietraket gelanceerd. Aan boord bevonden zich een rat, schildpadden en wormen. De lancering gold ook als het begin van de herdenking van de Islamitische Revolutie.

In een Amerikaanse rechtbank dient vandaag een bizarre rechtszaak. De 34-jarige Holly Crawford had namelijk een gat in de markt ontdekt. Ze voorzag drie van haar katten van enkele piercings om de beestjes te verkopen als zogeheten 'gothic katten'.
De vrouw moet voor de rechtbank in Luzerne County terechtstaan wegens dierenmishandeling en criminele samenzwering. Zelf ontkent Crawford haar katten te hebben mishandeld. Ze beweert namelijk steriele naalden en chirurgische zeep te hebben gebruikt. Daarnaast hield ze de beestjes goed in de gaten.
De gepiercete katten werden eind vorig jaar ontdekt tijdens een huiszoeking in haar woning. De dieren bleken te zijn voorzien van oor-, nek- en staartpiercings. Een van de katten had zelfs een ring om de staart om zo de bloedsomloop af te knellen, met als doel dat de staart er snel zou af vallen.

Een kat die aanvoelt dat iemand binnen korte tijd overlijdt. Het klinkt onwaarschijnlijk, maar in een rusthuis in Rhode Island woont zo'n kat. De Amerikaanse dokter David Dosa schreef er een boek over: 'Making Rounds with Oscar: the extraordinary gift of an ordinary cat'.
De vijfjarige Oscar heeft al zeker vijftig keer voorspeld dat iemand zou overlijden. Dat beweert niet alleen Dosa, maar ook de medewerkers van de instelling voor patiënten met dementie.
Krabben Normaal gesproken is Oscar helemaal niet zo sociaal, zo vertelt Dosa in zijn boek. Hij doolt dan rond in het tehuis zonder veel contact te zoeken met de bewoners. Alleen als iemand nog maar een paar uur te leven heeft, maakt Oscar zijn opwachting.
Als de kamerdeur dichtzit, krabt hij net zo lang aan de deur tot iemand hem binnenlaat. Vervolgens kruipt hij bij de patiënt in bed.
"Hij verspilt dan geen tijd", zegt Dosa. "Hij verdwijnt hooguit twee minuten om even iets te eten, maar daarna is hij weer terug. Het is alsof Oscar letterlijk over de patiënt waakt."
Stervende cellen Het is een keer voorgekomen dat verplegers Oscar bij een terminale patiënt in bed legden, maar dat hij zelf bij iemand anders in bed kroop. Diezelfde avond stierf de tweede patiënt. De andere bleef nog twee dagen in leven.
In zijn boek kan Dosa geen wetenschappelijke verklaring geven voor het gedrag van de kater. Hij vermoedt dat Oscar - net als honden die kanker kunnen ruiken - de geur van stervende cellen herkent.
Troost Dokter Dosa en de andere medewerkers van de instelling zijn inmiddels zo overtuigd van Oscars gave dat ze familieleden van een patiënt inlichten wanneer de kat op een bed springt. Ze kunnen dan snel naar het rusthuis gaan om afscheid te nemen.
Wanneer het niet lukt om op tijd te komen, vinden ze het een geruststellende gedachte dat Oscar bij hun dierbare is, vertelt Dosa. "Dat is een grote troost voor hen."

We kill 56 billion animals per year (not including fish and other aquatic animals) simply because they taste good. There is no necessity. No one maintains that it is necessary to eat animal products to live an optimally healthy life and an increasing number of mainstream health care professionals tell us that animal foods are detrimental to our health . Animal agriculture is a disaster for the environment because it involves a terribly inefficient use of natural resources and creates water pollution, soil erosion, and greenhouse gases. The only justification we have for the pain, suffering, and death that we impose on billions of animals is pleasure: we enjoy eating animal foods.
Although we claim to be civilized and to revere nonviolence, we actually participate in mindless violence several times a day when we eat flesh, dairy, eggs, etc.
We look at an event like the slaughter of dolphins in Denmark, or the bullfight in Spain, or dog fighting in the U.S. and we express our moral outrage. Why? These young people are doing exactly what they have been taught to do--to exclude nonhuman animals from the moral community. They are killing because they get some sort of enjoyment from it--just as the rest of us do when we sit down to eat the animal that someone else killed for us.
The animal you ate for dinner last night—even if raised in the most “humane” circumstances—had a rotten life and a painful death. Moreover, there is no distinction between meat and other animal products. Animals used for dairy are kept alive longer, treated at least as badly as animals used for meat, and end up in the same slaughterhouse. There is probably more suffering in a glass of milk than in a pound of steak.
Is what these young people have done terrible? Sure it is. But let's not be hypocrites. We're all complicit.
Please think about going vegan . It's easy, it's better for your health and for the planet, and it's the morally right thing to do.

In de Pater Malletstraat te Hechtel is al enkele weken een kattendoder aan het werk. Eind december was de eerste kat van een gezin in de Pater Malletstraat verdwenen, wat later verdwenen ook de andere twee katten.
De verontruste eigenaars van de katten namen contact op met BLID, om raad te vragen. De omgeving van de vermoedelijke “kattendoder” werd de laatste dagen heel nauwlettend in de gaten gehouden op aanraden van BLID en leverde uiteindelijk resultaat op. “Eind deze week werden drie katten gevonden aan de achterkant van de tuin van de buurman. Het leek wel of de poezen gewoon van over de omheining op het braakliggende stuk grond gesmeten werden”, zegt Dirk Blanchart voorzitter van BLID. Van de derde poes (tijgerkat) kent men de eigenaar nog niet en deze ligt er nog steeds.
Door de sneeuw en het vriesweer van de afgelopen dagen konden de poezen moeilijk gevonden worden, maar bleven ze ook langer bewaard. Een autopsie door een dierenarts toonde aan dat er bij de eerste kat kneuzingen waren aan de strot en dit wees op dood door wurging. Bij de tweede kat hing de strop nog aan de poot. “Dit wijst er ook op dat de kat later, door het toedoen van iemand, moet zijn omgebracht. Een kat kan niet sterven door een strop aan de poot. Indien ze zichzelf zou kunnen bevrijden, dan was ze zeker met het strop naar huis gekomen” meent Dirk Blanchart.
Toen de medewerkster van de dierenarts kwam kijken, herinnerde ze zich een poes met een gelijkaardige strop rond de poot, een week of drie ervoor. De strop zat strak rond de poot en moest deskundig verwijderd worden, de poot kon gered worden. Het bleek dat de eigenaars van die kat ook in de omgeving van de vermoedelijke kattendoder wonen. Zo groot kan toeval niet zijn.
De politie van Leopoldsburg heeft de eerste vaststellingen gedaan en de aanklacht genoteerd. “Volgens onze ingewonnen informatie zou de vermoedelijke kattendoder een dementerende man moeten zijn, maar zijn ziekte geeft hem nog niet het recht om katten te doden. BLID vraagt dan ook een grondig onderzoek en een passende vervolging voor het opzettelijk doden van dieren” alsnog de voorzitter.

It is hard to believe that in this age that this bloody massacre annually takes place on Faroe Island in a country that claims to be a civilized member of the European Union. It is not publicized that this blood thirsty massacre is a rite of passage into adult life for participating young men. It is incredible that this act of barbarism against this species, a dolphin intelligence that is known to approach people with curiosity has not been made public. Please help spread the word.

Whales are sensitive, social animals with highly developed nervous systems. They have a profound capacity to suffer distress, terror and pain. Each year, the Faroese kill pilot whales and other small cetaceans.
Islanders in motorboats first drive the whales into a bay. The chase may be lengthy. The exhausted, terrified and confused whales are eventually driven into the shallows. Here the bloodbath begins. The islanders repeatedly hammer 2.2 kg metal gaffs into the living flesh of each whale until the hooks hold. A 15 cm knife is then used to slash through the blubber and flesh to the spinal column. Next the main blood vessels are severed. The blood-stained bay is soon filled with horribly mutilated and dying whales.
The Faroese celebrate the butchery of their victims in an carnival atmosphere of entertainment. Indoctrinated from an early age, children are often given a day off school to watch the fun. They run down to the bay and clamber over the carcasses of slaughtered whales.
Every year around 2,000 whales are driven ashore and cruelly slaughtered in the Faroe Islands, mid-way between the Shetland Islands and Iceland. For centuries the Faroe Islanders have hunted pilot whales, driving entire schools into killing bays, where they are speared or gaffed from boats, dragged ashore and butchered with knives. Although the Islands are a protectorate of Denmark, they have their own Government and regulations governing the pilot whale hunt or "grind" as it is known.
Aside from the fact that the number of North Atlantic long-finned pilot whales is unknown and they are listed as 'strictly protected' by the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, this is an act of barbarism and pointlessness. By slaughtering 100 whales at a time, the Faroese are wiping out entire pods and family groups. They are removing building blocks from the gene pool of the species and damaging the web of life in the North Atlantic and the North Sea.
The drive hunt is a practice abandoned elsewhere many decades ago, and now outlawed by other European states. The inhabitants of the Faroe Islands have no subsistence need for whale meat, and much of the flesh is left to rot and be dumped; it cannot be exported, as it is polluted with heavy metals and other toxins and therefore cannot meet EU heath standards for human food.
According to Faroese legislation it is also permitted to hunt certain species of small cetaceans other than pilot whales. These include: Bottlenose dolphin; Atlantic white-beaked dolphin; Atlantic white-sided dolphin; and Harbour porpoise (There are also specific regulations for the hunting of harbour porpoise. Harbour porpoises are killed with shotguns).

The Faroes and Denmark
Faroe islands has been under control from Denmark since 1388, but in the Treaty of Kiel in 1814 terminated the Danish-Norwegian union. Norway came under the rule of the King of Sweden, but the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Greenland remained as possessions of Denmark. Subsequently, the Løgting was abolished 1816, and the Faroe Islands were to be governed as a regular Danish amt, with the Amtmand as its head of government. In 1851 the Løgting was resurrected, but served mainly as an advisory power until 1948.
At the end of the Second World War a portion of the population favoured independence from Denmark, and on 14 September 1946 a public election was held on the question of secession. It is not considered a referendum, as the parliament was not bound to follow the decision of the vote. This was the first time that the Faroese people were asked if they favoured independence or if they wanted to continue as a part of the Danish kingdom. The outcome of the vote produced a small majority in favour of secession, but the coalition in parliament could not reach a resolution on how this election should be interpreted and implemented, and because of these irresolvable differences the coalition fell apart. A parliamentary election was held just a few months later, in which the political parties that favoured staying in the Danish kingdom increased their share of the vote and formed a coalition. Based on this increased share of the votes, they chose to reject secession. Instead, a compromise was made and the Folketing passed a home-rule law, which came into effect in 1948. The Faroe Islands' status as a Danish amt was brought to an end with the home-rule law; the Faroe Islands were given a high degree of self-governance, supported by a substantial annual subsidy from Denmark.
The islanders are about evenly split between those favouring independence and those who prefer to continue as a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Within both camps there is, however, a wide range of opinions. Of those who favour independence, some are in favour of an immediate unilateral declaration. Others see it as something to be attained gradually and with the full consent of the Danish government and the Danish nation. In the unionist camp there are also many who foresee and welcome a gradual increase in autonomy even as strong ties to Denmark are maintained.

"Civilised" people from Denmark kill hundreds of intelligent Calderon dolphins every year. This happens in Faroe Island every year. The participans are teenagers. By doing this (killing the dolphins) they prove that they are no longer boys but men. Unfortunately everyone is participating in this activity: the boys who kill the dolphins and the people who stare at this considering it is something to be proud of.
The Calderon dolphins are nearly extinct and are not fierce creatures. They come close to humans out of pure curiosity and friendship. When they are killed, they don't die instantly. They are cut more than 1 time with thick hocks. At that time they produce a grim compatible with the cry of a newborn child.
I write this, my first petition because it is unacceptable what i see in pictures. Such a civilized and modern country as Denmark should not accept this as being a good tradition for its children and future adults. Please stop the killing of the dolphins! They didn't hurt anybody ever! I hope someone that can do something about this will see my petition and take action! Brooks Brothers is one of America's oldest retailers—known especially for its classic clothing—but the company isn't keeping up with the numerous fresh fashion-industry leaders that have compassionately and responsibly dumped animal fur, such as Polo Ralph Lauren; Stella McCartney; Vivienne Westwood; Calvin Klein; Betsey Johnson; Gap, Inc.; Nike, Inc. (including Cole Haan); and Liz Claiborne, Inc. (including Juicy Couture and Kate Spade).
Despite PETA's repeated attempts to explain to Brooks Brothers executives that by continuing to sell fur, they are directly supporting an industry that gasses, poisons, bludgeons, and electrocutes animals—and even skins them alive—Brooks Brothers simply refuses to stop selling fur. In an e-mail to PETA, Brooks Brothers said that the fur in its inventory "represents a very small amount of our total buy for the whole company."
Any percentage of fur in Brooks Brothers' supply chain sends a message that this company condones the cruelty inherent in the fur trade. With the vast number of synthetic materials available that do not contribute to animal suffering, there's simply no excuse to sell fur—in any quantity—or to hand money to an industry characterized by the systematic abuse of animals. PETA has asked Brooks Brothers to draw a clear line in the sand and completely disassociate itself from the fur industry, as so many other leading retailers have already done. Still, the company has not done so.
Every year, millions of animals are cruelly trapped and killed in the wild for their fur. Traps clamp down on animals' legs, often breaking their bones. Some animals, particularly mothers who are desperate to return to their young, will even chew off their own limbs in order to free themselves. Some die of blood loss, infection, or starvation. Others freeze to death. Animals often suffer for days before trappers arrive to crush their chests or beat or stomp them to death.
Animals on fur farms fare no better. An undercover investigation of fur farms in China, the largest supplier of fur to the U.S., revealed unthinkable horrors. On these farms, foxes, minks, rabbits, and other animals pace and shiver outdoors in cramped wire cages—unable to take more than a few steps in any direction—and they are exposed to driving rain and freezing nights and, at other times, scorching sun. As a result of anxiety-induced psychosis, many animals are driven to self-mutilation; others repeatedly hurl themselves against the sides of their cages out of frustration.
The slaughter methods are barbaric. Workers bludgeon animals with metal rods and slam their bodies on the ground. Some animals are still conscious when workers hang them upside down by their tails or legs and peel off their skin. If the animals struggle too much, workers stomp on their necks and heads to keep them still long enough so that they can begin the skinning process again. Some animals are still alive, breathing and blinking, for as long as 10 minutes after their skin has been ripped off.
Millions of animals who are cruelly trapped, farmed, and killed for their fur every year around the world need your help now. Please write to Brooks Brothers and politely yet firmly demand that it join the dozens of other top designers and retailers that have dumped fur.
Please send a message to Brooks Brothers' CEO, CFO, and chief merchandising officer or call the company's headquarters and urge it to end its sale of fur immediately and implement a fur-free policy.
DE FALOM - Een automobilist heeft in Friesland zeventig meerkoeten doodgereden. Hij zag de zwarte vogels gisteren te laat.
Veel meerkoeten hebben het moeilijk deze winter.
Het dierendrama vond plaats op de Achterweg in De Falom. Meerkoeten, maar ook andere vogels, gaan in de kou vaak op de weg zitten omdat dit warmer is. Bovendien hebben de dieren het moeilijk met het vinden van eten. Daarom scharrelen ze langs de weg naar voedsel.
Volgens boswachter Jacob Bijlsma van Staatsbosbeheer was het een verschrikkelijk gezicht. „Sommige beesten leefden nog, die moest ik afmaken. Zoiets vergeet je nooit weer.”
De automobilist benaderde zelf de boswachter, toen die bij de vogels ging kijken. „Hij vond het heel erg”, zegt Bijlsma. „Met een hoog en hees piepstemmetje legde hij uit wat er was gebeurd.” De man verklaarde dat hij moest kiezen tussen remmen op het gladde wegdek en het doodrijden van de dieren. „Hij koos het laatste.” Naar eigen zeggen had de man niet te hard gereden.
In Groningen richtte een onbekende automobilist vorige week ook al een slachtpartij aan onder een groep meerkoeten. Daar werden dertig beesten doodgereden.
Eindelijk, na véél geschrijf, publicaties en acties zijn we weer een stap voorwaards in de goede richting, sex met dieren is verboden en ook het in het bezit hebben van porno met dieren is verboden. Heel langzaam zet de mentaliteitsverandering zich ten goede door Leny.

De Eerste Kamer stemt nipt in met het initiatiefwetsvoorstel voor een verbod op seks met dieren.
Van de 73 aanwezige senatoren stemden er 39 voor het plan van Tweede Kamerlid Harm Evert Waalkens (PvdA) en 34 tegen. In de Tweede Kamer werd het wetsvoorstel eerder met algemene stemmen aangenomen.
Dat het een dubbeltje op zijn kant zou worden, was al voorspeld. CDA en VVD hadden zich zeer kritisch uitgelaten over het verbod, omdat er vele juridische haken en ogen aan zouden kleven. Beide partijen vinden bovendien dat misbruik van dieren onder de huidige wetgeving al strafbaar is.
Ook linkse partijen, waaronder Groenlinks en Partij voor de Dieren, hebben bezwaren tegen het plan, maar beschouwen het niettemin als een kleine stap vooruit.
Jagers die zondag willen gaan jagen, zullen dat in de toekomst op voorhand moeten melden. Daarnaast komt er ook een meldpunt waarop particulieren problemen rond de jacht kunnen signaleren. Dat zijn twee nieuwigheden die minister van Leefmilieu Hilde Crevits wil doorvoeren in de jacht.
Dubbel besluit Om de vijf jaar worden de data van de opening en van de sluiting van de jacht vastgelegd in een jachtopeningsbesluit. Het huidige besluit loopt af op 30 juni 2008. Minister Crevits werkte een dubbel besluit uit, naast een vijfjaarlijks hernieuwbaar jachtopeningsbesluit is er nu ook een jachtvoorwaardenbesluit dat onbepaald geldig is.
Afschotplan Het nieuwe jachtopeningsbesluit stelt een nieuwe bejaging van everzwijnen en vossen voor. Het beperkte jachtseizoen van de everzwijnen (1 oktober - 31 december) wordt aangevuld met een mogelijkheid tot 'bijzondere bejaging'. Zo kan er in gebieden waar er problemen zijn met evers gekozen worden voor een "afschotplan". De bijzondere bejaging moet wel aangevraagd worden en kan enkel als er sprake is van schade.
Vossenjacht De vossenjacht wordt een maand opgeschoven, maar verandert niet in duur. Voortaan kan er gejaagd worden tussen 1 oktober en 15 februari. Dat zou efficiënter zijn voor het beheer van de vossenpopulatie. De patrijzenjacht wordt dan weer wat verstrengd. Momenteel is de patrijzenjacht jaarlijks twee maanden open. Dat wordt voortaan beperkt tot één maand per jaar, behalve als er een wildbeheerplan is opgemaakt.
Ook de regeling voor vogelrijke gebieden wordt aangepast. Nu is de jacht in die gebieden strikt gesloten vanaf 15 november. Jagers zullen voortaan in overleg met de lokale natuurverenigingen en landbouworganisaties zelf een regeling kunnen lanceren.
Meldpunten De jachtbesluiten voorzien ook de lancering van twee meldpunten. Zo komt er een meldpunt waarop de jagers zich op voorhand moeten registreren als ze op zondag willen gaan jagen. Momenteel is die zondagjacht vaak aanleiding tot spanningen met andere vormen van recreatie (bv. wandelaars). Minister Crevits wil zo zicht krijgen op de jachtactiviteiten op zondag. Daarnaast komt er ook een meldpunt waarop particulieren eventuele knelpunten of problemen rond de jacht kunnen signaleren. (belga/svm)

Some Governments in Asian are quite happy to promote canine eating to their public, but as known through many surveys and research, it is also fact the for majority of general Asian public, they are against dog and cat eating. So the buck has to stop with their systematically cruel Governments. Only the power of all of us world wide can let the Asian Governments know that they are despised for what they do, endorse and allow.
So, lets support Animals Asia with their tireless human/animal programs in stamping out traditional beliefs that dogs and others are here to be eaten. We all know dogs are not food, but it's time to really tell Asia, and stop all of the barbarism.

2 dogs are scheduled to be euthanized (killed) on February 5, 2010. They were taken from their owners by Brampton Animal Services without a warrant on the premise that the dogs in question "looked" like pitbulls. The linage of the dogs is boxer/american bulldog and has been confirmed by two vets. These animals do not fall under the current Breed Specific laws of Ontario.
Theses dogs have hurt no one and the owners have not broken any laws. One of the owners is a 75 year old woman who loves her dog Rambo and is her faithful companion. We can no longer stand by and allow Ontario municipal animal services to operate this way.

Deze week is het vijftig jaar geleden dat Seti werd opgericht, de eerste systematische poging buitenaards leven te ontdekken.
In al die jaren heeft Seti nog geen enkel signaal opgevangen dat niet van mensen afkomstig is. Je zou dus kunnen zeggen dat het initiatief heeft gefaald. Toch zijn veel wetenschappers optimistisch dat er leven in het heelal is.
Zo heeft Lord Rees, de astronomer royal, oftewel de hoogste astronoom van het Verenigd Koninkrijk vandaag gezegd dat we 'op het punt staan' buitenaard leven te ontdekken.
Lord Rees sprak op een conferentie in Londen om het lustrum van Seti te vieren. Volgens de astronoom is onze apparatuur de afgelopen jaren zo verbeterd, dat we veel verder het universum in kunnen kijken. Het zal volgens hem niet lang meer duren voor we daar leven ontdekken.
Het enige waar de Lord zich ernstig zorgen over maakt, is de reactie van burgers op het nieuws dat we niet alleen zijn in het heelal. Er zou grote paniek kunnen uitbreken, zo denkt hij. Daar zouden we ons nu al op moeten voorbereiden.

Are We Surprised?
We kill 56 billion animals per year (not including fish and other aquatic animals) simply because they taste good. There is no necessity. No one maintains that it is necessary to eat animal products to live an optimally healthy life and an increasing number of mainstream health care professionals tell us that animal foods are detrimental to our health . Animal agriculture is a disaster for the environment because it involves a terribly inefficient use of natural resources and creates water pollution, soil erosion, and greenhouse gases. The only justification we have for the pain, suffering, and death that we impose on billions of animals is pleasure: we enjoy eating animal foods.
Although we claim to be civilized and to revere nonviolence, we actually participate in mindless violence several times a day when we eat flesh, dairy, eggs, etc.
We look at an event like the slaughter of dolphins in Denmark, or the bullfight in Spain, or dog fighting in the U.S. and we express our moral outrage. Why? These young people are doing exactly what they have been taught to do--to exclude nonhuman animals from the moral community. They are killing because they get some sort of enjoyment from it--just as the rest of us do when we sit down to eat the animal that someone else killed for us.
The animal you ate for dinner last night—even if raised in the most “humane” circumstances—had a rotten life and a painful death. Moreover, there is no distinction between meat and other animal products. Animals used for dairy are kept alive longer, treated at least as badly as animals used for meat, and end up in the same slaughterhouse. There is probably more suffering in a glass of milk than in a pound of steak.
Is what these young people have done terrible? Sure it is. But let's not be hypocrites. We're all complicit.
Please think about going vegan . It's easy, it's better for your health and for the planet, and it's the morally right thing to do.
