DOG DEATHS
At least 142 dogs have been run to death or have died from other causes in the Iditarod. There is no official count of dog deaths available for the race's early years.
The Iditarod is described by the Iditarod Trail Committee and by the Alaskan media as an exciting contest of man against nature. What the descriptions do not tell us is the untold suffering of the dogs that often give their lives in this race. Dog deaths and injuries are common in the Iditarod, and when they are not racing, the dogs live under inhumane conditions.
The Iditarod is a dog sled race held every March in Alaska. The 2008 Iditarod will begin on March 1. In this race mushers (dog sled drivers) force their dogs to run 1,150 miles from Anchorage to Nome in 8 to 16 days over a grueling terrain. This is the approximate distance between Los Angeles and Seattle, New York City and Miami, Chicago and Houston. Mushers press their dogs to run at ever increasing speeds, so that the dogs get little rest or sleep.
The current speed record is 8 days, 22 hours and 46 minutes, less than half the time it took to run the first Iditarod race. No dog wants to run so far and so fast.
PETA's Campaign to End the Canadian Seal Slaughter
As the world turns its attention to the Vancouver Olympic Games, millions will also focus on Canada's shame, so PETA is calling on the Vancouver Organizing Committee to use its clout to help stop the Canadian seal slaughter.

I'm in contact with one of the reporters for Kosmos TV and will suggest that between us - that is Kosmos TV & GAR (Greek Animal Rescue) put up a minimum of 2,000euro REWARD for information leading to the identity and prosecution of the monster who did that to the poor dog. I hope that the reward can be announced on regular basis on Kosmos TV and the local radio stations, plus posters made & distributed. Maybe the reward can be increased if more people get involved. It's a case of making a stand and get a message out that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! I watched the video footage in horror (wish I could have understood the interview of the man who found the dog and the vet who treated him), but made me 'crack' was seeing the dog lying on the floor (by then the injuries dealt with and bandaged) and when he looked up, his tail tapped the floor a few times..... he had suffered so much at the hands of some subhuman, yet he was still willing to trust and show appreciation for being helped.

============================================== Honorable Officials of Spain:
Animal cruelty is not acceptable as entertainment or tradition in the 21st Century. Yet the Toro Jubilo annually occurs in Medinaceli, a province of Soria, Spain. Jeering mobs harass a bull with balls of burning tar or turpentine (called "pitch") attached to his horns. A bull%u2019s horns, body and eyes are scorched. Some try to escape hours of agony by smashing into walls.
Archaic spectacles tarnish Spain%u2019s reputation and hinder tourism. I cannot support any society that ignores the senseless brutalization of animals. I will advise others to join me in a boycott of Spanish tourism and commerce until the Toro Jubilo and other blood fiestas are permanently banned.
I urge Spanish officials to enforce stronger animal cruelty laws that shield animals from all forms of abuse, including vulgar rituals and blood fiestas.
While different cultures may not understand each other%u2019s customs, all rational humans comprehend cruelty. Setting fire to a live animal %u2014 known as Toro de Fuego or %u201Cbull on fire%u201D %u2014 is sadistic.
It is time for all regions of Spain to subscribe to the ethical doctrines that shape our civilized world. Heritage, entertainment, art and religion never justify outright torture.

Please urge the California Fish and Game Commission to ban bear hunting in the state
Deadline for public comments is March 13, 2010
Every year, more than 2,000 bears are legally killed by hunters across California, with the most bears killed in Siskiyou, Trinity, Humboldt, Shasta, and Tulare counties. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species, an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 black bears are legally hunted each year in the US and Canada, while an unknown number are also illegally poached. Shockingly, it is legal for trophy hunters in California to chase bears with packs of hounds.
To make matters worse, the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) has proposed dramatically expanding bear hunting across the state. In a document obtained by Big Wildlife, the CDFG has recommended: increasing the hunt quota from 1,700 to 2,500 bears or eliminating a cap altogether and expanding hunting into other areas of the state. The agency also plans to allow the use of global positioning system (GPS) collars and treeing switches on dogs while bear hunting. (A treeing switch alerts hunters when hounds have chased a bear up a tree.)
If these proposals are adopted, bears will have virtually have no escape.
The California Fish and Game Commission will ultimately decide to accept or reject the CDFG's proposals. In our comments to the Commission, Big Wildlife has urged the Commission to reject the CDFG proposals and to ban bear hunting across California. We urge you to help end bear hunting in the state.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Urge the California Fish and Game Commission to ban bear hunting in California. See our sample letter below.
To contact the California Fish and Game Commission: Email: fgc@fgc.ca.gov Phone: Fax: (916) 653-5040
Mailing address: California Fish and Game Commission 1416 Ninth Street P.O. Box 944209 Sacramento, CA 94244-2090
SAMPLE LETTER TO COMMISSION DATE
Dear California Fish and Game Commission:
I understand the California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) will consider changes to the state’s mammal hunting regulations. As part of that process, I urge the Commission to reject the California Department of Fish and Game's plans to expand bear hunting across the state. Instead, I encourage the Commission to immediately adopt new regulations banning the hunting of black bears throughout California. Specifically, I urge the Commission to ban bear hunting in California because:
Trophy hunting puts additional pressures on bears, who face a host of increasing threats from poaching, habitat fragmentation and destruction, human encroachment into wildlife areas, aggressive government lethal control programs, and climate change.
State wildlife officials have failed to assess the impacts of poaching. Illegal killing of bears has increased globally, fueled by a booming international market, for bear parts, especially bear gallbladders used in traditional Asian medicine and bear paws, considered a delicacy in soup. Bear gallbladders can go for $5,000 a pound, an enticing price that has spurred bear poaching in California. Poaching of wildlife has become epidemic across the state. Violations rose from 6,538 in 2003 to 17,840 in 2007. The illegal sale of California wildlife and wildlife parts generates an estimated $100 million a year, second only to the illegal drug trade, according to California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) officials. Yet, the state has just 358 game wardens patrolling 300,000 square miles of land and water. It makes no sense to permit bear hunting when state wildlife law enforcement capabilities are so crippled.
Trophy hunting ignores the ecological value of bears. Apex species, such as bears, cougars, and wolves, play critical roles in maintaining ecosystems. Black bears often scavenge for food, playing an important role in recycling carrion. Bears also help transport berry seeds. Along salmon spawning streams, bear scat and the remains of fish carried into the woods contribute to the long-term nutrient cycle in old-growth forest. Even cambium feeding by bears, which sometimes kills trees, creates widely scattered snags that benefit other species of wildlife.
The state has failed to assess the impacts of annual increases in bears killed by hunters. According to CDFG data, the number of bears killed legally by hunters has steadily increased well beyond the agency's own 1,700 annual season limit. Yet, the CDFG has yet to analyze how these dramatic increases have affected state and local bear populations, behavior, social structure, reproduction, and cubs.
Hunting black bears is cruel, unethical, and environmentally harmful. In California, bears can be legally chased by hounds, treed, and then shot by hunters. Hounds have been known to pursue bears with cubs, increasing the risk that cubs could be separated from their mothers, then orphaned. It is not uncommon for hounds to maim bears, especially cubs, and even more common for bears to maim or kill an entire pack of dogs. In addition, hounds may pursue non-targeted animals, including imperiled species, putting additional stress on those species. Bears can also be killed with bow and arrow, which studies reveal produce an unacceptably high wounding rate.
Again, please end this cruel and inhumane “sport” in California. Instead of permitting bears to be shot for trophies, the state should strengthen safeguards for these magnificent animals. Thank you.
Sincerely,
YOUR NAME ADDRESS PHONE EMAIL
THE BEAR FACTS, BEARS FACE WORLD WIDE THREATS
Bears throughout the world face a host of threats from trade in bear parts, poaching, hunting, trapping, baiting, damage "control" programs, habitat destruction, and climate change. Unless quick and concerted international actions are taken to halt these assaults against bears, the future of many bear species and populations across the globe is grim.
Interactions between people and black bears have increased in recent years, due largely to human encroachment into bear habitat, population growth, and other dramatic changes to the environment. Suburban neighborhoods, especially those adjacent to forest habitat, are ideal habitats for bears because they offer food, water, and shelter.
Bears are here to stay. We must learn to peacefully co-exist with our wild neighbors, as this is their home as much as ours. This requires modifying our own behavior so as not to attract or incite unwanted guests. Communities need to take preventive action to head off conflicts by providing information about living with bears to new residents, homeowner associations, schools, and businesses.
Those living in bear country can take these simple and humane steps to prevent conflicts with bears: · Secure garbage cans and compost piles and clean up fallen fruit. · Keep animals in at night. · Don't leave dog or cat food outside. · Walk your dog on a leash. · If approached by a bear, make loud noises and make yourself look big. Show your dominance and re-instill the bears natural fear of humans.
“CONTROL KILLS” OF GRIZZLY BEARS OUT OF CONTROL ON BC’S CENTRAL COAST
A disturbing number of grizzly bears are being shot as so-called "control kills" in the Bella Coola valley on British Columbia's central coast. Records obtained from the provincial Ministry of Environment show that 18 grizzlies were killed as "problem bears" from 2007-2008. The majority of these grizzlies were killed because of irresponsible human behavior – primarily, a failure to secure bear attractants. For example, one local resident left a tub of salmon on his deck and then killed a female grizzly and her two cubs when they tried to eat the fish. Another resident, who was "not into removing" the apples from his tree, killed a grizzly for feeding on the fruit.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: *Urge the BC Minister of Environment to make existing laws addressing the issues of bear attractants enforceable and provide sufficient government funding for conservation enforcement and bear smart education. BC Minister of Environment contact information: The Honourable Barry Penner Minister of Environment PO Box 9047 STN PROV GOVT Victoria BC V8W 9E2

The BC government needs to reform existing laws under the Wildlife Act that address the issue of bear attractants to actually make them enforceable. The BC government must also help communities in bear habitat implement bear-proof waste management systems. And it needs to reinstate recently slashed provincial funding for bear smart programs. Taking such measures will ensure greater safety for people and bears.

Judge quadruples the recommended sentence for A.L.F. activist.
Calling him a “terrorist” and following through on his threat to more than quadruple the recommended sentence, judge Dee Benson Thursday sentenced William Viehl to two years in federal prison. It is the first sentence handed down under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act.
Background
Viehl was charged last year under AETA for the release of 650 mink from the McMullin Fur Farm in South Jordan, Utah after cell phone records and a car key found at the scene were used to tie him to the raid. Graffiti found at the scene read “A.L.F.” and “We are watching”. Over one year later, mink are still being found living wild in the vicinity of the farm.
After an 11-month court battle, Viehl accepted a non-cooperating plea bargain in which the prosecution agreed to recommend a sentence of 6 months. In November the judge threw out the deal, stating the recommendation was “too low” and did “not match the severity of the crime”. The sentencing was held over for February, where Thursday he sentenced Viehl to 24 months in prison.
The Sentencing: Report From Court
Court convened Thursday at 11:30am in downtown Salt Lake City. The prosecution first addressed the court. Refraining from the theatrics of past hearings such as a slide show showing firebombed cars from previous A.L.F. actions, the prosecutor made a very brief statement again recommending a six month sentence, and sat down.
Viehl’s attorney addressed the judge, also asking for a six month sentence. She highlighted previous animal rights cases where the “crimes” alleged would legally be considered more serious, yet resulted in sentences lower than or equal to the sentence being threatened by the judge (at previous hearings, Benson threatened a sentence of two years or more).
Judge Benson talked about the attention the case has received, and restated that he felt the recommended sentence was too low.
Lodder and Blackridge fur farms: guilt by association
He expressed his belief Viehl was involved with more Animal Liberation Front actions than those he was charged with, making clear he would be sentencing Viehl for crimes to which little to no evidence linked him, and for which he has not been charged.
He began this point by bringing up the A.L.F. raid of the Lodder fur farm in Kaysville, Utah. 6,000 mink were released from this farm in September, 2008. The judge pointed out Viehl was pulled over near the farm several weeks before the raid. The judge cited a police report which stated he was stopped dressed all in black, and a second occupant of the vehicle was seen stuffing a ski mask under a car seat. A subsequent (warrantless) search of the vehicle allegedly turned up wire cutters. Weeks later, 6,000 mink were released from the fur farm.
He also mentioned an alleged “attempted” mink release at Blackridge Farms in Hyrum, Utah. Viehl and a second person were allegedly followed by a mink farmer after they were seen passing the farm late one night in October, 2008. The judge stated that after noticing he was being followed, Viehl pulled the car over and approached the farmer’s vehicle to ask why she was following them. Benson pointed out the vehicle was the same vehicle said to be used in the McMullin raid.
The evidence
The judge admitted the only evidence against Viehl was a car key found at the farm the morning after the raid, and cell phone records which placed Viehl’s phone near the McMullin farm the night of the mink release. He stated that even with the cell phone records, “without that key, we may not be here right now”.
Benson retreated to the emotive language both him and the prosecutor have made familiar in this case, stating Viehl “caused terror”, and that he knows of no other word for releasing animals from cages than “terrorism”.
“We have so many rights to properly change laws” in this country, he said. This was a naive or deliberately misleading statement while two SHAC 7 defendants and Kevin Olliff remain in jail for attempting to affect change in a legal, above-ground fashion through protest and outreach.
Judge: Viehl “heavily involved” in other A.L.F. raids
Consistent with previous statements from the judge, he linked Viehl to a broader conspiracy, stating he had “no doubt [Viehl] was heavily involved” in other Animal Liberation Front actions. He called him a “copycat”, and said the sentence would be aimed towards deterring future activists from carrying out A.L.F. actions.
With that, he handed down his sentence: Two years in prison, three years probation, nearly $66,000 in restitution, and no contact with the Animal Liberation Front.
With credit for time served, good time, and halfway house, Viehl expects to be released in August.

Dear Tree,
Did you know that animals are still used to test everything from deodorant to laundry detergent to dog food? Yes, even now, with all our technological advances, animals are still being forced into restraints and under the knife in the name of "science."
In 1981, shortly after PETA was founded, the group launched the precedent-setting "Silver Spring monkeys" case, resulting in the first arrest and criminal conviction of an animal experimenter in the U.S. on charges of cruelty to animals, the first confiscation of abused animals from a laboratory, and the first U.S. Supreme Court victory for animals in laboratories.
The monkeys we led police to in a Silver Spring, Maryland, laboratory were in bad shape. As the state's veterinary witnesses would later testify in court, many of the monkeys had been operated on for a crude experiment in which their backs were cut open and their nerves severed. One timid little monkey named Billy had both his arms broken and was only able to move by pushing himself along the bottom of his cage on his elbows to get to his food.
The abuses that the Silver Spring monkeys endured were not isolated incidents. Millions of animals are used in experiments every year. All species of animals, from chimpanzees to cats, are used, and more often than not, they are acquired without much thought, housed in abysmal conditions, and denied anything remotely similar to a natural or comfortable life.
You can help stop this abuse by making simple lifestyle choices.Cruelty-free living means using all your purchasing power for good. Many people start by swapping out everyday household items or cosmetics with cruelty-free alternatives, but you shouldn't stop there. Donations to charities can also support cruelty to animals. Here are some resources to help you on your journey to cruelty-free living:
Cruelty-Free Charities: Many well-known health charities, including the American Cancer Society, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the March of Dimes, and the American Lung Association, fund experiments on animals. Fortunately, animal-friendly philanthropists can give to cruelty-free charities that use modern tests instead. Visit HumaneSeal.org to find out which charities do and which don't fund animal experiments now.
Pledge to Be Cruelty-Free. You can keep the pressure on those responsible for these cruel tests by signing our pledge and joining the thousands of caring consumers who refuse to purchase products from corporations that abuse animals.
Get involved locally.Join PETA's Action Team and get tips on how to help animals in your part of the world. You'll also receive e-mail alerts letting you know when our demonstrations are coming your way. You can join today by filling out the form here.
The only thing that stands between the end of cruel animal experimentation and the beginning of sensible and humane health programs is the fact that too many people still accept the unacceptable. We must demand change. We are so fortunate to have you as part of our community—together we can end animal experimentation.
Don't hesitate to contact us should you need more information. Thank you for all that you are doing to help make a difference for animals.
Dear friends, here I'm again to ask your help for Monkeys in Porto Rico. Despite our protests and their first decision, they are now decided to go on. We must stop them before it's too late. Please, take action NOW. Thank you, Lo
UPDATE 2/9/10: On 12/30/09 we reported that thousands of monkeys would be spared misery inside research labs due to a Superior Court judge's ruling to stop construction of a primate supply firm in Puerto Rico. In an abrupt about face, Puerto Rico's Appeals Court has decided to let construction proceed in Guayama while reviewing Bioculture's appeal.
So now, while the court considers -- Bioculture builds. According to Animal Legal Defense Fund: "The three-person panel of Appeals Court judges did not explain their decision, and they basically said that building may proceed until they order otherwise. We don't know when that will be..."
NOT GOOD NEWS FOR MONKEYS. Let officials know how disappointed you are in the Appeal Court's reverse decision and that citizens worldwide support PERMANENT termination of this and any future monkey-breeding compounds.

Honorable Officials of Puerto Rico:
I am extremely disappointed to learn that construction of a monkey-breeding compound has resumed in Guayama. I understand Puerto Rico's Appeals Court ruled in late January to let primate supplier Bioculture build -- despite a lower court's earlier decision to terminate this project.
Apparently, while the court considers Bioculture's appeal, the firm is free to proceed with plans that call for the seizure of long-tailed macaques from the wild. There is no indication when, or if, Bioculture will be held accountable for legal irregularities with its applications and permits that had stopped construction in the first place.
I ask Puerto Rico's leadership to take a stand against Bioculture or any firm that pointlessly breeds animal suffering. In-vitro cell technology, 3D cellular systems, computer automation and other innovations will soon render animal research obsolete. Why not look forward, rather than into the past?
It does not serve human health to facilitate old-fashioned animal research. Primate experiments have failed to yield tangible data for AIDS, Alzheimer's, stroke, cancer, and other diseases. Companies such as Bioculture persevere for profit, not medical progress.
If completed, monkeys inside the Guayama facility will be separated from mothers and sold into a barren world of concrete and metal. In labs, they'll endure implanted brain electrodes, repeat surgeries, poisoning, and more.
Please consider strong public opposition to the breeding of monkeys for experimentation. Given the initial findings of Guayama's Superior Court, along with continuing negative publicity, I urge officials to support permanent cancellation of Bioculture's primate compound.
PLEASE DON'T CHANGE THE ACTUAL LAW AND TRY TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM IN A CIVILIZED WAY! KILLING CAN NEVER BE A SOLUTION! PLEASE CHOOSE LIFE!
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED HEREBY PROTEST AGAINST THE PROPOSAL OF THE PREFECT OF BUCHAREST, MR. MIHAI ATANASOAIE, TO CHANGE THE EXISTING LAW FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS AND TO ALLOW THE EUTANASY OF STRAY ANIMALS. IT IS INACCEPTABLE AND AGAINST ALL THE EUROPEAN LAWS TO ALLOW THIS HOLOCAUST OF STRAY ANIMALS. THERE ARE OTHER METHODS TO DEAL WITH THIS PROBLEM. A MASSIVE CAMPAIGN OF SPAYING AND VACCINATING, BUILDING OF SHELTERS AND A PROGRAM OF ADOPTIONS COULD SOLVE THE ISSUE OF STRAYS. YES IT WILL TAKE MORE TIME, BUT IF WE CONSIDER OURSELVES CIVILIZED, EUROPEAN AND THE MOST IMPORTANT HUMANS, THEN WE MUST CHOOSE THIS WAY. EUTANASY IS ACCEPTED ONLY IN THE MOST EXTREME CASES, WHEN AN ANIMAL HAS A FATAL DISEASE. PLEASE DON'T CHANGE THE ACTUAL LAW AND TRY TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM IN A CIVILIZED WAY! KILLING CAN NEVER BE A SOLUTION! PLEASE CHOOSE LIFE!

English:
Dear Sir or Madam,
with big dismay this news from Romania walks around in Europe.
During an interview was suggested by Mr. Mihai Atanasoaei, prefect of Bucharest that the only way to handle with the street animal problem, would be to kill again.
Large parts of your population feel disturbed by the street dogs.
It is scandalous to even consider, to legalize slaughtering again completely instead of seeking for other alternatives.
I point out to you the fact that, partly extremely brutal slaughtering methods are carried out since decades in South and East Europe without solving this problem.
One single bitch can generate in 5 years approx. 2700 descendants! Hence, the only logical solution is the realisation of a consequently castration programme.
At the same time has to be considered that the protection of animals can create also an economically positive aspect. The occupation "animal keeper" would create jobs at animal homes and contribute to the reduction of unemployment. As a teaching field a clarification with a deferential and responsible contact with other living beings would take place which also contains the creation of new jobs.
Unfortunately, Great Britain with his killing methods is stated as an example for imitation, but one forget quite obviously that the UK has no problems with street animals in such magnitudes.
I would like to point out Hungary to you, because the situation there corresponds to the Romanian.
Hungary began in autumn, 2009 a state castration programme
Hungary will introduce "protection of animals" as a school subject
Hungary will built up "animal care" as an official occupational picture
The authorities in Hungary are certainly willing to stand aside to a neighbouring country in an advisory capacity.
Moreover, numerous animal welfare organisations in Romania and other EU countries are active and willing to perform assistance if your country would admit it.
Long-term seen the problem of the stray animals would be solved and Romania would be able to pursue good and responsible animal welfare.
I expect from politicians of a member state of the EU the readiness to inform themselves about this subject instead of falling back into old practise which did not prove itself.
In the name of humanity and the respect compared with other living beings I ask you to refrain from the planned law changes and to consider alternatives which are worthy to an EU member country in 2010. Homicides are not!
Yours faithfully
This mail goes to the prefect Mihai Atansoaei, to all 33 Romanian EU-representatives, to the 6 mayors of Bucharest and to different Roumanian media.
Artikel uit de krant NHD op 15 januari 2010, getiteld: "Zwijnen moeten rillen" (om warmte te ontwikkelen)
Auteur: Nico Van Straalen
Millions of animals are tortured everyday because of cosmitic companies. Their legs and other bones are broken to test painkillers.. etc... it should be illegal for cosmetic companies to test on animals. Alot of great companies don't test on animals, so it shows you there is another way.
Please help stop animal testing.
