Lisa Grossman, my close friend and colleague in NIO Florida, was arrested minutes ago in Gainesville and is being held in the Alachua County Jail on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest.

Several weeks ago, outraged at the movement to “Kill the Ground Zero Mosque,” Lisa published her response in an effort to distinguish ignorance and calamity from her religion. Earlier today, during a last minute discussion about how to proceed when she would undoubtedly be arrested, she told me that it was “her calling” to be present in Gainesville in case the Koran-burning went forward.

Since I know my friend would proudly say the following words publicly, I am going to publish her thoughts about the Koran-burning from a private email:
The news is crazier than this cult leader (not calling him a pastor, sorry!). He has made up a story that the mosque investors agreed to have a meeting with him and he will be on a plane Saturday, the 11th. He said they told him that if he doesn”t burn the Qurans, they will move the NY mosque!!!!!!!!!!! They say nooooo, we never said that! Then he says well then our Quran burning is in limbo, which means he’s now saying he will go forth if he’s not on that plane in a meeting. I’m afraid he may be smarter than he looks; that he had this trick/agenda in mind the whole time. Now he’s saying wow, there better be a trip to a meeting, I would hate to think the Muslim mosque people lied to me. And they say he lied. So not sure on it all. I feel I want to go because there may be a public chance to make sure people see him as non Christian. He needs to be discredited. I mean this shit is going to turn into Ireland with 2 religions fighting if people think he represents “The People of the Book.” I do wish more activists were feeling this with me, but I know this is just not in people’s hearts like it is in mine. That’s okay. Religion is a personal issue. And with fewer people going, maybe a fire extiguishing action is still possible. If not, I’m hopeful other Christians are there and are calmly protesting… showing their respect for Islam.

Gedurende 2009 en 2010 heeft de Zweedse Dierenrechtenorganisatie Animal Rights Alliance, undercover foto's en video's gemaakt op vele nertsenfokkerijen in Zweden.Onderzoeksmateriaal toont aan dat nertsen in Zweedse nertsenfarms in ellendige omstandigheden leven.In 2003 gaf een onderzoekscommissie de nertsenfarms tot 2010 de tijd om zich te voegen naar de Animal Welfare Act. De commissie concludeerde dat als er geen verbeteringen kwamen voor de dieren dat het fokken van nertsen gedeeltelijk of volledig verboden zou moeten worden.

Naast het documenteren van inbreuken op de Animal Cruelty Act, heeft de Animal Alliance ook veel milieudelicten vastgelegd. In tegenstrijd met de gangbare regelgeving, liep het afvalwater van vele fokkerijen rechtstreeks in het omgevende milieu en de karkassen van nertsen werden niet op de juiste manier geruimd.
“Ons onderzoeksmateriaal bewijst duidelijk dat de bontindustrie niets heeft gedaan om de omstandigheden voor nertsen op bontfarms te verbeteren. Op het merendeel van de boerderijen die we bezochten, vonden we bewijzen van stereotiep gedrag, meerdere gevallen van kannibalisme, en ontelbare nertsen met gapende wonden, missende oren en woekerende infecties. De dieren reageren op de stress en de frustratie in hun extreem kleine kooitjes door elkaar te bijten tot de dood er op volgt,” aldus Malin Gustafsson, woordvoerder voor de Animal Rights Alliance.
Ze vervolgt haar verhaal:
“Nertsen brengen in de natuur meer dan de helft van de tijd door in water; ze zouden normaal gezien klimmen en verschillende kilometers per dag rennen. De Animal Welfare Act in Zweden stipuleert dat alle dieren de kans zouden moeten krijgen om te leven in overeenstemming met hun natuurlijke noden. Bontfarms zijn een aanfluiting van de wet. Slechts enkele weken verwijderd van de nationale verkiezingen van 2010, willen vele Zweden graag weten of de Zweedse politieke partijen van plan zijn de Animal Welfare Act te respecteren en bontkwekerijen af te schaffen. Dit hopen wij tenminste ten stelligste.”

As I’m sure you will be aware, in 2003 the Swedish Commission of Inquiry into the Fur Industry gave Swedish fur farms until 2010 to comply with the Animal Welfare Act (1988:534), however seven years later we can conclude that the Swedish fur industry has done absolutely nothing to improve conditions for mink on fur farms in that time!
It is evident that the Fur Industry and Animal Welfare are completely incompatible, and therefore I urge you in the strongest possible terms to ensure that both the Swedish Animal Welfare Act (1988:534) is properly enforced and that the decision of the Swedish Commission of Inquiry into the Fur Industry is acted upon.

Meet Molly.She's a gray speckled pony who was abandoned by her owners when Hurricane Katrina hit southern Louisiana ... She spent weeks on her own before finally being rescued and taken to a farm where abandoned animals were stockpiled. While there, she was attacked by a pit bull terrier and almost died. Her gnawed right front leg became infected, and her vet went to LSU for help, but LSU was overwhelmed, and this pony was a welfare case. You know how that goes.
But after surgeon Rustin Moore met Molly, he changed his mind.He saw how the pony was careful to lie down on different sides so she didn't seem to get sores, and how she allowed people to handle her. She protected her injured leg. She constantly shifted her weight and didn't overload her good leg. She was a smart pony with a serious survival ethic.
Moore agreed to remove her leg below the knee, and a temporary artificial limb was built. Molly walked out of the clinic and her story really begins there.
'This was the right horse and the right owner,' Moore insists. Molly happened to be a one-in-a-million patient. She's tough as nails, but sweet, and she was willing to cope with pain. She made it obvious she understood that she was in trouble.The other important factor, according to Moore , is having a truly committed and compliant owner who is dedicated to providing the daily care required over the lifetime of the horse.
Molly's story turns into a parable for life in Post-Katrina Louisiana ....The little pony gained weight, and her mane finally felt a comb. A human prosthesis designer built her a leg...
The prosthetic has given Molly a whole new life, Allison Barca DVM, Molly's regular vet, reports.
And she asks for it. She will put her little limb out, and come to you and let you know that she wants you to put it on. Sometimes she wants you to take it off too. And sometimes, Molly gets away from Barca. 'It can be pretty bad when you can't catch a three-legged horse,' she laughs.
Most important of all, Molly has a job now. Kay, the rescue farm owner, started taking Molly to shelters, hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers... Anywhere she thought that people needed hope. Wherever Molly went, she showed people her pluck. She inspired people, and she had a good time doing it.
'It's obvious to me that Molly had a bigger role to play in life, Moore said. She survived the hurricane, she survived a horrible injury, and now she is giving hope to others.'Barca concluded, 'She's not back to normal, but she's going to be better. To me, she could be a symbol for New Orleans itself.' This is Molly's most recent prosthesis. The bottom photo shows the ground surface that she stands on, which has a smiley face embossed in it. Wherever Molly goes, she leaves a smiley hoof print behind.
