There is a significant new development regarding my client, Mumia Abu-Jamal, the journalist and author who has been on Pennsylvania’s death row for nearly three decades.
Oral argument scheduled, United States Court of Appeals
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has just granted oral argument in Mumia’s case. (Abu-Jamal v. Beard, No. 01-9014.) The arguments will be before a three-judge panel on November 9, 2010, 2:00 pm. This will be in the Ceremonial Courtroom, U.S. Courthouse, 6th & Market Streets, Philadelphia.
Mumia & I spoke shortly after the order was received. He was humbled by the good news. We are cautiously encouraged that the federal court has taken this step.
This is significant in the ongoing litigation to save Mumia’s life and win the case. At stake is whether he will be executed, or granted a new jury trial on the question of the death penalty. We previously won on this issue, but early this year the U.S. Supreme Court vacated that decision and ordered that the case be again reviewed by the federal court.

The release of this superb film comes at a perfect time since it counters another movie,The Barrel of a Gun, that was also shown the same day. The Barrel production is replete with distortions and wild theories, and is supported by those who wish to see my client executed including the Fraternal Order of Police.

My view is clear! Hunters, poachers should be shot dead on site. There has to be zero tolerance! Those who cause and inflict harm towards animals must be held accountable and the general perceptions and mentalities of humans must change. If people are not capable of doing so on their own accord, then severe and strict measures of punishments must be adopted and enforced to act as a deterrent and serve as a beacon of justice.
I’m not here to try and win any popularity contests, my position on these matters may seem ruthless and not everyone will agree with me, but I don’t care what people think. I play hard and have made sacrifices and taken risks for the environment and the animals. The attention and media I generate reaches far beyond just social networking sites, and I have been very successful in many campaigns against hunting and animal abuse/cruelty.
I seek nothing less than a shoot to kill policy for all National Park and Wildlife Rangers, to be implemented on a global scale. And I don’t care the mask a hunter hides behind: stupid rednecks, pompous businessmen... religious nut cakes... It matters not! It all equates to one thing – heinous and shameful acts of cruelty and killing. And it’s time to take a stand and say no and defend the rights of all animals, to stop the slaughter and killing of innocent creatures. And if that means giving the hunters a taste of their own medicine and shooting the bastards, then so be it!
This is not manifesting or promoting hate, this is fierce determination! Righteous anger is healthy and necessary to bring further attention and promote change.
Time is running out for humanity – for evolution will be a non-event if we continue on the path we are on.
Open letter to the Korean Government: We, the undersigned urge you and your government to put an end to the cruelty and suffering of dogs and cats in your country Korea.
We know that all over the country, animals destined for human consumption are maltreated, tortured before they are sold as human food. We do also know by now that in your country animal welfare nil.
In your country Korea the below description is a normal life to millions of dogs and cats:
- First they are catch or stolen, sometimes beaten on the street before being transported under brutal conditions to the market or farms.
- The farms could whole as many as from 50 to several thousand living dogs and cats.
- The animals were held cramped in rows of tiny wire or bamboo cages.
- When a Korean picks a dog ready for sale, the animal are removed from the cages with metal tongs around the necks and carried by their hinds and legs.
- The slaughtermen often stun them with repeated blows to the head using clubs, or by swinging them by the hind beating their heads to the ground-
- After five to ten minutes these animals were still breathing, had a heartbeat, and continued moving and blinking.
- The headline should now be: Meat from tortured dogs taste best come and buy!
- The slaughter is saying: enjoy your meal, while we are ready to vomit!
We would like to point out that in a civilized country such as we are sure Korea wants to be known, behavior of its human inhabitants towards its local animals, stray wild or otherwise, it is simply intolerable. If Korea wants to assume its rightful place among the leading nations of the world and do its ancestry proud, pleas ensure through proper legislation and enforcement that all living creatures are to be respected.
Furthermore, since animal welfare is an increasingly popular concept, I would also like to let you know that sooner or later, the national Korean income from tourism will suffer as tourists who have become disgusted with seeing tortured animals stay home and tell relatives, friends and the social internet for a they frequent of what they have seen. Therefore, even economically speaking it would be shortsighted to let this awful situation endure. Unless of course, you want to be ruled by those monsters who in the backyards abuse, slaughter and sell the poor dogs! It is up to you Sir and Madam in Korea!
Lastly, it is our civil duty to warn you there is a well investigated and published link between animal abuse and for example child molestation, which makes the need for proper legislation and enforcement even more urgent. Consider also the educational effect on a child when it sees adults around the slaughtering animals in a disrespectful and horrific manner. Will that child grow up to respect life itself? For its fellow Koreans? We fear not!
The Korean government is much responsible for continuing cruelty to and abuse of Korean animals. As long as the consumption of companion animals continues, so does cruelty to animals. Therefore we urgently and politely request that you initiate legislative action as soon as possible, in the interest of the animals and the Korean population as whole.
One must be very hungry
Or really like the taste
To kill and eat a dog.
It might be out of dire necessity
Or cultural norm and sacred ritual.
But either way it brutalizes
Both the killer and the killed.

For those who want to make the world a better place for animals, there is nothing more effective than translating this conviction into action at every meal. If people are saddened by dolphins in far-away oceans being harmed or primates suffering in unseen research labs, we can take indirect steps to speak out against these tragedies. But there is nothing as concrete as making a difference closer to home simply by boycotting animal cruelty in our daily food choices.
For those of us who are already vegan, we need to lead by example to show others that we are healthy and friendly people who engage in calm and rational discussions about important animal issues.
One of the most incendiary details in the documents is that Blackwater, through Total Intelligence, sought to become the “intel arm” of Monsanto, offering to provide operatives to infiltrate activist groups organizing against the multinational biotech firm…
Through Total Intelligence and the Terrorism Research Center, Blackwater also did business with a range of multinational corporations. According to internal Total Intelligence communications, biotech giant Monsanto—the world’s largest supplier of genetically modified seeds—hired the firm in 2008–09. The relationship between the two companies appears to have been solidified in January 2008 when Total Intelligence chair Cofer Black traveled to Zurich to meet with Kevin Wilson, Monsanto’s security manager for global issues.
After the meeting in Zurich, Black sent an e-mail to other Blackwater executives, including to Prince and Prado at their Blackwater e-mail addresses. Black wrote that Wilson “understands that we can span collection from internet, to reach out, to boots on the ground on legit basis protecting the Monsanto [brand] name…. Ahead of the curve info and insight/heads up is what he is looking for.” Black added that Total Intelligence “would develop into acting as intel arm of Monsanto.” Black also noted that Monsanto was concerned about animal rights activists and that they discussed how Blackwater “could have our person(s) actually join [activist] group(s) legally.” Black wrote that initial payments to Total Intelligence would be paid out of Monsanto’s “generous protection budget” but would eventually become a line item in the company’s annual budget. He estimated the potential payments to Total Intelligence at between $100,000 and $500,000.

Animal behaviourist Kevin Richardson has such an intimate bond with big cats that he can spend the night curled up with them without the slightest fear of attack. Richardson, 32, who is based in a wildlife conservation area near Johannesburg in South Africa, works his unusual magic on other species too. Cheetahs, leopards and even unpredictable hyenas hold no threats for him.
So instinctively in tune is he with these beasts, whose teeth are sharp enough to bite through thick steel, that mother hyenas even allow him to hold their newborn cubs without pouncing to the rescue.
But lions are his favourite. He lavishes them with unconditional love, he says, treating each individual differently, speaking to them, caressing them and, above all, treating them with respect. A former student of human physiology who once worked with pre and post-operative human patients, Kevin turned to animals ten years ago when he came to the conclusion that he could trust a lion over one of his own kind every time - well, nearly every time.
A close encounter with an aggressive four-year-old male in the early days taught him a lesson he has not forgotten. The animal pinned him to the ground and started biting him until something about Kevin's passive attitude stopped him in his tracks.
Kevin says he is most confident with animals he has known since birth, but claims he can become close friends with any lion less than a year old, when it is still flexible enough to accept him as part of its own pride.
"I have to rely on my own instincts to gauge an animal or a situation, and I will not approach a creature if something doesn't feel right," he says. "I don't use sticks, whips or chains, just patience. It may be dangerous, but this is a passion for me, not a job." Videos
