Vandaag is de jacht op de fazant opengegaan. De Hubertus Vereniging Vlaanderen (HVV) – de organisatie die naar eigen zeggen een ruime meerderheid van de Vlaamse jagers vertegenwoordigt – heeft de opening van de fazantenjacht aangegrepen om met de pers het veld in te trekken. Het doel van dit charmeoffensief is om het grote publiek te doen geloven dat jagers een onderdeel van het natuurbeheer zijn. Jagers proberen echter alleen maar de voorjaarsstand te verhogen, zodat zij in het najaar meer wild kunnen schieten. Zij plegen daartoe wat zij noemen ‘biotoopverbetering’. Wanneer de nestgelegenheid beperkend is, kunnen zij de hoeveelheid nestplaatsen voor fazanten, patrijzen en ander jachtwild trachten te vergroten. Met de aanleg van wildakkers breiden ze dan weer het voedselaanbod uit. Een andere manier om de productie van een wildsoort te verhogen is bijvoederen. Daarmee verhogen zij de overlevingskansen gedurende de wintermaanden, tenminste wanneer het v oedsel een beperkende factor was. Uitgaande van de biotoopeisen van hun favoriete wildsoorten richten jagers hun jachtveld zoveel mogelijk in naar de eisen van die soorten. Met natuurbeheer heeft deze vorm van soortenbeheer weinig van doen. Natuurbeheer omvat immers het totale beheer van plantensoorten, diersoorten en bodem als een geïntegreerd geheel. Wat goed is voor de ene soort kan nadelig zijn voor de andere. Het huidige jachtbeheer is niet gericht op het behoud van complete ecosystemen, maar op een vergroting van de productie van geliefde jachtwildsoorten binnen dat ecosysteem.
Jagers zien roofdieren zoals vossen en roofvogels als een soort concurrenten voor hun ‘oogst’. Roofdieren leven immers van de aanwas van hun prooidieren. Hun aantallen zijn daarop afgestemd. Het aantal prooidieren is daarom beperkend voor het aantal roofdieren. Roofdieren romen een deel van de najaarsstand af, maar de voorjaarspopulatie blijft onaangetast. De HVV probeert nu met alle beschikbare middelen – dus ook politieke – de jacht op bijvoorbeeld de vos uit te breiden. Met de regelmaat van een klok brengt ze de vos (Vulpes vulpes) in een negatieve context in de media. Bij het begin van de voorbije zomer vroeg de HVV daarvoor persaandacht via een dossier. Steunend op dit dossier zijn het deze keer enkele leden van oppositiepartij Open Vld die via een voorstel tot resolutie diezelfde jagersboodschap vertaald willen zien in een aangepaste regelgeving. In dit verhaal is hoe dan ook een rode draad zichtbaar. Immers, terwijl u it wetenschappelijke analyses van de zogenaamde vossenproblematiek telkens weer blijkt dat bejaging van de vos niét het belang van de (klein)veehouder dient, noch dat van de volksgezondheid – laat staan van het natuurbehoud – wordt hier toch opnieuw gepoogd het omgekeerde te beweren.

Within minutes of the first sighting on Wednesday, pictures posted onto microblogging site Twitter and video on YouTube showed a number of tiny silver dots floating around 5,000ft above 23rd St and Eighth Avenue.
Most people were sceptical that the objects were extra terrestrial life, yet remained transfixed nonetheless.
Witness Daniel Calhoun, 52, said: ‘Common sense says it wasn't a UFO. Common sense says it was a plane or a balloon, but this thing stopped everyone in the street for two blocks.

‘There was something weird about it. Light just doesn't reflect off balloons like that.’
Some blog posts linked the sighting to a book published by a retired US Air Force officer which said that October 13, the very day the sighting happened, would witness ‘a massive UFO display over the world's principal cities'.
Stanley A. Fulham said in his book ‘Challenges of Change’ that aliens will neither land nor communicate on that date and claimed they are ‘aware from eons of experience with other planets in similar conditions their sudden intervention would cause fear and panic'.
Other witnesses said the sighting was a ‘real Superman moment’, after the comic book hero who lived in New York.

Tim Powell, 28 , said it was ‘the most bizarre thing I've ever seen.
'It looked like a jellyfish made of lights that just hovered in the sky like it wanted to be seen,’ he said.
‘I was half expecting the aliens to beam down and introduce themselves.’
The FAA was unable to find anything abnormal or offer an explanation as to what had happened.
Spokesman Jim Peters said technicians double-checked their radar settings but nothing was amiss. He had also not been informed of any weather balloons due to be in the area.
‘Nothing that we can account for would prompt this kind of response,’ he said.
It has been some time since New York had a UFO scare, although in May a strange object was reported over the skies of New Jersey.
Residents of Somerville and Bridgewater called the police when they saw the long cylindrical object hurtling through the sky - which looked and sounded like an aeroplane.

Molalla, OR: In an anonymous communique received by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office yesterday, the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) claims to have liberated captive deer from an unnamed Molalla, Oregon deer farm. The deer on so-called “farms” are slaughtered at the youngest age possible to ensure maximum profit for the farm’s owner.
The communique received reads, in full:
On the morning of October 9th, we raided a deer farm located at 32155 S Grimm Road in Molalla, OR. A large section of fencing was stripped away allowing the captive deer herd a chance to escape into the surrounding forest. The venison meat industry remains small in this country, but as long as they exploit sentient animals, they will remain a target of the ALF. For the animals enslaved, mutilated, and murdered by this society: we will be tearing down the fences to set them free. –Animal Liberation Front
Although raised in captivity, the deer remain genetically wild and fully capable of survival on their own without human intervention. A similar liberation of the entire captive deer population of GNK Deer Farm in Monterey County, California was carried out by the ALF in January 2005. In a communique taking responsibility for that action, activists stated “Our hearts go out to victims of the larger problem, the billions of lives we are unable to save – cows, chickens, pigs, mice, rats, and others – casualties of the meat, dairy, vivisection and other industries of suffering and blood. Their pain is our own.”

This cat on the picture was killed in most horrible ways in Izmir by a sicko called Ufuk Günaydin, a student at Ege University in Turkey.
The cat was sleeping in a box behind a shop whose owners wanted to care for the cat and give her medical care, it seems that the cat was not in a very good condition.
A group of 5 young men with a pit bull saw the cat sleeping in the box, kicked the cat out of the box, first they wanted their pit bull to fight with the cat, but since the dog wasn't really interested in it, they were pissed and took action themselves, Ufuk G kicked and smashed the head until the cat was dead... what remained was puddle of blood.

This 2 day festival on the northern shore of Lake Issyk Kul in the town of Cholpon-Ata draws the regions best hunting dogs, eagle hunters, and falcon handlers in all of Kyrgyzstan.
Festivities range from eagle hunting of pheasants; Taigen also known as Kyrgyz hunting dog racing; to wolf baiting.

Within rural communities, Kyrgyz have long raised Taigen and trained Eagles to protect both the lives of their livestock and family. This captured wolf was responsible for killing 68 sheep, 20 cows, and 17 horses. Such an unfathomable number of lost cattle and sheep is enough to impoverish any community.

Het nijlpaardje met de bijnaam Owen weegt zo'n 300 kg. en werd bij Sabaki de Indische Oceaan in gespoeld en daarna weer op de kust geworpen, toen de tsunamigolven op 26 december de Keniaanse kust overspoelden. Daar hebben de 'wildlife rangers' hem gevonden en opgevangen.

De hippo is nog maar een baby'tje; Hij werd op een erg kwetsbare leeftijd in de steek gelaten en, van nature zijn hippo's sociale dieren die het fijn vinden om zo'n jaartje of vier samen met hun moeders op te trekken" legt hij uit.
"Het leven wordt niet gemeten aan het aantal malen dat we ademen, maar aan de momenten dat we ademloos zijn".
Dit is een waar gebeurd verhaal dat aantoont dat onze verschillen niet veel uitmaken, als we de warmte van een ander nodig hebben.

The recent discovery of Gliese 581g, an alien planet in the habitable zone of another star, has been an exciting development for scientists probing the galaxy for signs of extraterrestrial life. At least one claim of a possible signal from the planet has already surfaced – and been met with harsh skepticism among the science community.

Following the Sept. 29 announcement of the discovery of Gliese 581g, astronomer Ragbir Bhathal, a scientist at the University of Western Sydney, claimed to have detected a suspicious pulse of light nearly two years ago, that came from the same area of the galaxy as the location of Gliese 581g, according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail online. Bhathal is a member of the Australian chapter of SETI, a non-profit scientific organization that is dedicated to research, exploration and education in the field of astrobiology.
"Whenever there's a clear night, I go up to the observatory and do a run on some of the celestial objects," Bhathal told the Daily Mail. "Looking at one of these objects, we found this signal. We found this very sharp signal, sort of a laser lookalike thing which is the sort of thing we're looking for – a very sharp spike. And that is what we found."
Still, there are some scientists who are skeptical of Bhathal's assertion.
"I know the scientist, and when he first announced it, I asked him for the details, and he wouldn't send them to me," astronomer and SETI pioneer Frank Drake told SPACE.com. "I'm very suspicious."
Drake is credited with conducting the first search for signals from extraterrestrial intelligences 50 years ago as part of what was then called Projectt Ozma. He coined the famed Drake Equation to calculate the number (N) of alien civilizations with whom we might be able to communicate.
Further study would perhaps confirm or deny the supposed observation, but Drake thinks that the claim is likely a dubious one.
Strange signal, or phantom?
Bhathal claimed to have detected the puzzling signal in Dec. 2008, almost two years before researchers announced the Gliese 581g finding, and long before it was announced that habitable planets were found orbiting the star Gliese 581 itself.
"I'm not aware of the location that was claimed for the source of that light, and [Bhathal] refused to tell me where it came from," Drake said. "I think it's very unlikely that it came from the direction of Gliese 581."
Gliese 581g is one of two new worlds that was discovered orbiting the red dwarf star Gliese 581, which is located about 20.5 light-years from Earth. In total, there is a family of six planets that has been found around Gliese 581. [Tour the six Gliese 581 planets.]
Steven Vogt, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, and his colleague Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution of Washington announced the Gliese 581g finding in a press conference held by the National Science Foundation on Sept. 29.
About Gliese 581g
While there are six planets known to orbit around the parent star, Gliese 581g is the only one in the so-called habitable zone – a region where liquid water can exist. Astronomers have long-thought that the presence of liquid water, which accompanies life on Earth, could be a major ingredient for life on other worlds.
Observations have shown that Gliese 581g is between three and four times the mass of Earth. While it is larger than our planet, it is still classified as a nearly Earth-sized world. Its radius is between 1.3 and two times the size of Earth, scientists have said.
The planet has not been officially named yet (nor have any other worlds in the Gliese 581 system). But Vogt has given it the nickname "Zarmina's World," in honor of his wife.

4. Because of negligible efforts made by the city police,no breeder was called upon or arrested for questioning.
5. The Chief Minister of Haryana was approached by me & the case was forwarded to CID Crime Branch (Hisar).
6. The case was closed by CID Crime Branch due to lack of evidence, but it should be reopened and all tainted peoples be arrested.
7. Let me bring to your notice that this is the first case registered in the district for cruelty towards animals.
8. 2 vehicles which were seen at the site of the crime were never traced inspite of giving the details to the police:

9. 2 witnesses were given to the police but no interrogation was done by them.
10. Names of few Puppy mills Breeders were also sent to the police but to no avail.
11. I would like to bring to your notice the despicable condition of animals / dogs under the care of these Puppy mills Breeders.
12. One dog thief was arrested by CIA Police, Sirsa few days back but nothing has been done against him as yet.
13. It would be my humble request to pursue this case to its logical and just conclusion.
14. Shut down all illegal breeders - puppy mils and animals be rescued - rehabilitated.

Een Chinese uitbater van een herstelshop voor huishoudtoestellen doet gouden zaken. Zijn geheim? Leg gewoon een vet varken voor je deur en de klanten verzamelen in bosjes voor je deur.
Het enorme varken kreeg de naam Liu Liu en weegt inmiddels over de tweehonderd kilogram. Baasje Wu Tian kreeg het beest drie jaar geleden van een oude vriend. "Toen hij me dat varken gaf, vertelde hij me dat ze niet groter zou worden dan een laars. Viel dat even tegen: mijn huis is nu al te klein geworden, dus moet ik haar hier wel bewaren."
Trekpleister En dat legt Wu Tian dus geen windeieren. Hij doopte zijn winkel om tot 'Fat Pig Repairs', waardoor die uitgroeide tot een heuse trekpleister. Verschillende tv-stations en kranten kwamen hem al een bezoekje brengen. Voor de deur hangt een tv'tje, waarop die interviews telkens herhaald worden. "Mijn shop staat hier al twintig jaar, maar nooit heb ik meer succes gekend dan de voorbije drie jaar. Veel mensen hier hebben nooit een levend varken gezien, dus als er iets kapot is komen ze naar hier en brengen ze hun kinderen mee."
Rood papier als versiering De rode papiersnippers op het varken dienen louter als versiering. "Zo ziet ze er mooier uit", meent Wu Tian. "Slim en handig is ze ook, want ze heeft zich nog nooit pijn gedaan aan de rommel in mijn winkel. En ze vindt altijd de weg naar binnen en buiten. Meestal ligt ze echter gewoon op de grond en kijkt ze naar zichzelf op de tv."
Sommige klanten opperden dat een dieet misschien geen slecht idee zou zijn, maar daar denkt Wu Tian zelfs niet aan. "Varkens moeten vet zijn, zo zijn ze het knapst." (svm)

De jagers zaten in een zogenaamde 'ute'.
In Australië is een konijnenjager achter het stuur van zijn wagen doodgeschoten toen hij werd geraakt door een kogel uit het geweer van een van zijn passagiers. Die zaten in de laadruimte van zijn pick-upwagen op een soort schietplatform terwijl de auto door een veld reed in Horsham, 300 kilometer ten westen van Melbourne.
Het geweer van een van de jagers ging per ongeluk af toen de wagen over een bobbel reed, melden Australische media. De kogel ging door het dak van de wagen en raakte de bestuurder achteraan het hoofd. De inzittenden bleven ongedeerd, maar de bestuurder overleed ter plaatse. (sam)

Despite knowing the overwhelming public revulsion L'Oreal continues to use thousands of animals to test upon every year L'Oreal does not want to reveal animal testing to their customers, and they certainly don't want to reveal the disgusting range of tests carried out on the animals. In the name of vanity, animals are subjected to painful and cruel ingredient testing by the industry. Disgraceful eye irritation tests are conducted by securing rabbits so they are immobile, while substances are dropped into their eyes (rabbits are used because they have no tear ducts and therefore cannot relieve the stinging and pain). Poisoning takes place whereby groups of animals are continually force-fed an ingredient until half of the group die. Other animals have their skin shaved and scraped until super-sensitive, then the ingredient is applied to test skin reaction - making sure that the poor animal cannot scratch or remove the substance. It is hard to imagine the pain suffered by these defenseless animals. But we all know how sore it can be when we get something in our eye or our skin is scraped - at least we can immediately do something to relieve the pain. Think of what it would be like if we were unable to touch or stop the pain, not just for a minute or two but for hours running into days.
It's simply so disgraceful!
