Our world is getting closer to "Star Trek" every day, it seems. Scientists announced today (April 14) they've been able to teleport special bits of light from one place to another, a la "Beam me up, Scotty."
While the advance doesn't necessarily mean we'll ever be able to teleport people, it does represent some pretty nifty, mind-bending physics.
Teleportation requires taking advantage of a quirk of quantum physics called entanglement. Two particles can be bonded so that even when separated by large distances, they communicate instantly, and what happens to one affects the other. (It's a situation so bizarre Einstein called it "spooky action at a distance.")
To teleport light, researchers led by Noriyuki Lee of the University of Tokyo had to destroy it in one place, and re-create it in another. This mirrors the teleportation process on "Star Trek," where transporters scan a person, atom by atom, and dismantle him, only to rebuild the person by configuring a different set of atoms in exactly the same pattern in another place.
Lee and his team accomplished this by linking a packet of light to one half of a pair of entangled particles. They then destroyed the light and the particle it was linked to, leaving only the lone particle of the entangled pair. The remaining particle retains the link with its entangled partner, though, including information about the light, which enabled the researchers to rebuild the light in the exact configuration at the other location.
The scientists reported their experiment in the April 15 issue of the journal Science.
Schrödinger's cat
This actually isn’t the first time physicists have teleported particles or light in this way. What differentiates the new research is that this time they teleported something much more complicated. This teleported light wasn't just any light — it was in a special quantum state called a Schrödinger's-cat state.
Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment invented by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935 to describe a truth about quantum mechanics: that some properties of particles are not decided until an outsider forces them to choose by measuring them.
Schrödinger envisioned a cat inside a box that contained a small amount of a radioactive substance. Within an hour, there would be a 50 percent chance the substance would decay, releasing poison into the box, and a 50 percent chance the substance would not decay and no poison would be released.
According to the rules of quantum mechanics, the cat is neither dead nor alive until the box is opened and an outside observer "measures" the situation. While the box remains closed, the whole system is suspended in a state of uncertainty where the cat is both dead and alive.
Schrödinger intended the story to sound a bit ridiculous — he was using it to highlight how bizarre the ideas of quantum mechanics would be if extended beyond particles to the macro world of everyday objects.
Nonetheless, the strange situation remains a fundamental part of the theory of quantum mechanics, and experiments verify that particles really do seem to exist in these suspended states of multiple possibilities until forced into one situation or another by measurements.

Just like a cat that is both alive and dead, light can be in a Schrödinger's-cat state by having two opposite phases at the same time. A light wave's phase is akin to whether a jump rope is up or down at a certain position. Not until a direct measurement is taken would this light be forced to choose between these two contradictory conditions.
This light is in a particular quantum-mechanical arrangement that couldn't be described with the classical physics used to understand the larger, macro world, including basic light waves.
"It can't be presented classically — it would be an oscillation both up and down, which makes no sense," said physicist Philippe Grangier of France's Institut d'Optique, who was not involved in the new research, but who wrote an accompanying essay on the finding in the same issue of Science.
Grangier said the experiment was an advancement in physicists' abilities to both make complicated Schrödinger's-cat states in light, and to teleport objects. Yet there's still a long way to go before anything more complicated can be teleported.
"There is not at present a way to teleport even a bacteria," Grangier told LiveScience. "For a real cat I don't think this will be possible in any possible future."
Nonetheless, the new advance could help physicists work toward superfast quantum computers and other applications that come from being able to manipulate things on the quantum scale.
"We are really learning how to manage the quantum world," Grangier said. "And this is a long and painful process, especially for experimentalists like me. All these things, just a few years ago they were just ideas. Now they are turning into experimental realities."

Een wet tegen herhaalde dierenmishandeling is dringend nodig !
Hoe lang nog mogen mensen steeds opnieuw dieren nemen om ze daarna te verwaarlozen en/of the mishandelen ?!
Ook hier is er weer een stel mensen die in de herhaling zijn gevallen en weer zijn er weerloze dieren de dupe ! Wordt het nu eens geen tijd dat er een duidelijke wet komt die de dieren tegen dit soort figuren beschermt !
Bij een bewoner van een volkstuinencomplex in Groningen zijn 360 verwaarloosde dieren in beslag genomen. Dit meldt een woordvoerder van de Landelijke Inspectiedienst Dierenbescherming (LID).
Het ging om kippen, eenden, ganzen, cavias en andere dieren die in veel te kleine hokken zaten. De eigenaar kreeg een maand geleden al een waarschuwing, zijn geiten waren niet correct geregistreerd en er lagen dode kippen op het terrein. Bij een herhalingscontrole maandag bleek de situatie niet te zijn verbeterd.
De man haalde de afgelopen jaren meerdere malen het nieuws vanwege dierenmishandeling. Drie jaar geleden werd de man beboet omdat er toen een dood paard en acht ernstig ondervoede pony’s bij hem werden aangetroffen. Een jaar daarvoor waren er al meer dan 300 ernstig verwaarloosde dieren bij de Groninger weg gehaald. De Dierenbescherming wil na deze zoveelste overtreding dat de man een levenslang verbod op het houden van dieren krijgt.
Dit liefdesverhaal wilde ik jullie niet onthouden...
Ongeveer acht jaar geleden vloog een wilde Geelkuifkaketoe tegen een auto aan, en brak een vleugel. De automobilist nam de kaketoe mee naar de veearts in Nerang (Queensland, Australië), die de lelijk gebroken vleugel amputeerde. De automobilist besloot om de kaketoe te adopteren, waarvoor hij een National Parks and Wildlife toelating nodig had. Hij hield de kaketoe in een kooi in de tuin waar hij dikwijls werd bezocht door wilde soortgenoten. Tot grote verbazing van de eigenaar leerde de kaketoe slablaadjes en ander voedsel door de spijlen van de kooi door te geven aan wilde kaketoes die op bezoek kwamen !
Op een goeie dag was er een Geelkuifkaketoe die lang bleef zitten bovenop de kooi die voorzien was van een speciaal slot, een parrot-proof slot
Er werd druk over en weer gepraat tussen beide kaketoes !
Op een bepaald moment kroop de wilde kaketoe op de voorkant van de kooi.
en hij slaagde erin om het special slotje open te krijgen !
Hij opende het deurtje en een lange periode van wederzijds knuffelen en samen eten volgde !
En het wederzijds kopke krauwen als echte verliefden, bleef maar duren !
Hij bleek helemaal niet schuw, en kroop een paar keer in en uit de kooi !
En na een tijdje kwam wat moest gebeuren: ze paarden (zie foto hieronder) ! Maar zouden er ook baby-kaketoetjes volgen ?
Soms kwamen meerdere wilde kaketoes op bezoek, maar het speciale vriendje kwam wel elke dag terug !
De eigenaars lieten voortaan het deurtje open overdag. Maar als ze het eens vergaten open te laten, slaagden beide kaketoes er telkens weer in om het deurke op de prutsen ! Meestal bleef de gehandicapte vogel in de kooi, of soms kroop hij er bovenop. Ondertussen was het ook duidelijk geworden dat de gehandicapte vogel een wijfje was, en de wilde bezoeker een mannetje !
Het leek erop alsof het mannetje verveeld zat met het feit dat het wijfje niet kon vliegen, en vanuit nabijgelegen bomen probeerde hij met veel luide roepjes het wijfje te lokken om met hem mee te vliegen ! Na een paar dagen begreep hij echter dat het niet zou lukken om samen weg te vliegen. Hij bleef dan maar in haar buurt. Zij keerde niet meer naar haar kooi terug, en samen brachten ze hun tijd door in bomen in de tuin die voldoende omheind was zodat geen honden in de tuin konden komen. De kat van de buren was wel een probleem, en we moesten haar vaak wegjagen. Zo'n kat zou 's nachts wel eens een slapende kaketoe kunnen overvallen !
Kaketoes nestelen in holten in bomen. Maar het mannetje begon een holte onder een boom in de tuin te graven ! We plaatsen een holle tronk op de grond in de tuin, maar de kaketoes waren er niet in geïnteresseerd. Het nest dat het mannetje had uitgegraven, bestond uit een korte tunnel naar een holte waar het wijfje haar eieren legde ! Eens de eieren waren gelegd, werd het mannetje erg agressief !
We hielden een oogje in het zeil. Beide kaketoes broedden afwisselend en na ongeveer drie weken, kwamen de kuikens uit !Elke keer als Pa en Ma Kaketoe van het nest weg waren, konden we snel een kijkje en een fotootje nemen. Maar meestal was Pa Kaketoe snel weer terug om ons weg te jagen !
Wel, we hopen dat Ma Kaketoe het een mooie baby vindt, maar voor ons ziet het er meer uit als een rozig vleesballetje met gelig dons erop (zie foto hieronder) !

The wolf had a hundred eyes ... I guess, if I did not go mad tonight, I never will.. I guess, if my heart dealt with the enormous sorrow I felt tonight, it will deal with anything.. I have told you before, I'm telling you again: I do not wish to be called a human anymore. I refuse to be called a human.
Tonight, I have seen torture with my very eyes. With these "human" eyes, I saw the torture the humans and their children did on a god's creature, known to be a "wild" wolf..
I saw a living being's eyes filled with fear. I saw a piece of wood shoved in his mouth, and I saw him being tied up. I saw him tied to a chain from his hind leg, dragged on the ground.
I saw a bunch calling themselves "humans", pick the animal up from his ears triumphantly, and pose to the cameras. I saw the blood pouring out from his mouth when they took the piece of wood out. I saw the torture this creature went through, all because God created him as a wolf, and he was acting by his nature. I saw a huge Anatolian shepherd dog released onto him to kill him. I saw the humans poke him with sticks after he was ripped apart by the dog. I saw the creature known as "humans" torturing a creature that was acting according to his nature. I saw the humans enjoying this very torture.
I was so afraid of what I saw tonight... I was not afraid of the "wild" wolf one bit tonight... I was so afraid of these humans, and their children tonight. They were laughing, giggling, posing, enjoying... The wolf, on the other hand, had his eyes wide open, looking at each and every one of them. The wolf was all eyes... As if the wolf became hundreds of eyes, and seeing everyone who was torturing him and enjoying it, as well as everyone watching him on their tv sets.
The wolf was seeing the whole world, and asking: WHY?
I will never ever forget that wolf, his eyes and what he lived tonight. I will also not forget the humans that called the tv and said "you are exaggarating, similar things are being to humans as well, who cares about a wolf?".
One day, when being a human or an animal will not matter, what will matter is helping an unfortunate being in need of a help, that will be the day when we will all truly become "human".
One day, when people ask for your help and you do not respond "I say humans first", at that exact moment, your heart will open its doors to a being in need of help, and you help this being even if it's an animal, that will be the moment when things will change.
One day, when being a human or animal does not matter, but you feel the pain the being goes through in your own body, when your body and your heart aches, that will be the day that you will understand what that wolf felt...
And I guess that day will be the day when your heart will become the wolf's heart, and your eyes will become the wolf's eyes... Then, you will ask the world: = WHY?

“Hi Camille, As you probably know, school will be out here in a matter of days. I’ve heard a lot about this campaign against vivisection students but there is no time left this semester. But I say yes, yes, yes. We need to target students… Many students who are in my class now at __________ will continue at UF in the fall. You need to understand their indoctrination and the disgusting professors that shape these young peoples minds. Everyone in the nursing program here is expected to dissect an animal. HM is my professor for this lab. When some of us objected to dissecting pigs or crows, he offered to bring us in live squirrels from his backyard. As if we were objecting because we wanted “better” victims! He offered to trap them. He offered to gas them for us if we didn’t want to kill them ourselves…. WHAT THE FUCK!!!…. What are your ideas about moving forward with this campaign?”
First, Meeker is a violent degenerate. Is it any wonder that our universities are churning out empathy-deficient sadists who will spend their professional lives in dungeons tormenting animals for profit? ! I’m wondering if there is some health code or animal protection law that HM the Sociopath has violated. After all, they don’t want their students to contract rabbis, lime disease, etc. while they are being taught the joys of mutilating helpless victims. Try to eliminate him the old-fashioned way: write a letter to your student dean, the Dean of Admissions, the college president, any applicable oversight committees… ah, hell, why stop there? copy the lunch lady and custodian too. Blast this terrorist for endangering the welfare of the student body. They don’t care about animal rights. But they definitely care about lawsuits and bad P.R.!!!
Second, I would suggest that you hold on to the roster of names in this class so that those who matriculate into biology at UF in the fall can be easily identified.

95% of my email indicates that we all want to make a difference, but — up until now — we just didn’t know how. We are all conditioned to think that we need groups of activists to be effective but the truth is that effectiveness starts with each one of as individuals. If we’re going to stand on a corner with a sign and be polite, then, whether we’re alone or 100-strong, all we are is an amusing pest. It’s rare to find of group of aggressive activists in the states. Lisa Grossman and I had a moment of clarity this weekend: in our anti-viv campaign at UF, we would rather be two people with megaphones, anger, and attitude than have to spend another second placating other activists, fraternizing with welfarists, or toning down the rhetoric. And now that we’ve decided to shift some of our attention to the student body, we will explain ourselves to no one.
But taking on universities is not the best use of our energy or resources. I encourage students to look into your universities and focus on the nexus of the issue — the students: they will either usher in the next generation of laboratory horror or we can all liberate future victims by eliminating the source of the problem now.
You need to isolate the biology- and research-science students.
They need to be educated and given a chance to make the correct and compassionate decision to denounce animal torture. If they refuse, they become the enemy like any other.
Many students still live with their parents or they are out on their own for the first time in their young lives. We want to target those who are the weakest links — “science nerds” (i.e., alienated, socially-isolated, bookworms) — and those who are the worst-case abusers (i.e., those who gloat when we educate them and talk about eating cheeseburgers):
Enemy students should begin to get their own home demos.
If you are only one person or two, then go door-to-door and leaflet their neighborhood. We’ve had great success with this strategy.
Get a megaphone and drop by their parents’ place of employment.
ANY tactic that has been employed thus far against laboratory sadists should now be focused on enemy student vivisectors.

“i worked (2009-2010) at the department of anatomy and neurobiology of university of california in irvine (uci) under the mentorship of dr. anne calof. there’s a lot of different projects running in the lab but they are mainly about neurogenesis and development using mice (wt and transgenic) as model system. when i started i was neutral about animal research. if i had to do it, i’ll learned it and did it… just as any other lab technique…
well, they taught me how “wean and tail” them. the tail part consists in putting the pups in a chamber of analgesic gas, hopefully not too long ’cause they are so small they can die if left too long, taking them out, burning a blade (to sterilize) i will use to cut a small piece of tail to genotype (by pcr) and then, because you know this we do it we hundreds of them, i have to mark them with a number. this number is a hole that i punch out of the ear of the mice. the hole in different part of the ear tells me their number/id. there are other ways, i’m just telling you the way we used to do it.
after genotyping, then i decide which mice are the ones i want for whatever experiment we would be running. usually, in my case, my boss wanted everything because she was neurotic like that, but normally we would take the wild types of the litter and the knockouts… this experience made me grow from neutral to what the fuck?!?!”

A wild-horse advocacy group has released videotape of a Utah holding facility that it says shows mustangs living in unhealthy conditions.
The Cloud Foundation said the video shot by activist Lisa Friday last month at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Salt Lake Regional Wild Horse and Burro Center in Herriman, Utah, underscores the need for the agency to halt further roundups of the animals from the range in the West.
Among other things, the group based in Colorado Springs, Colo., said THE VIDEO SHOWS HORSES THAT WERE UNABLE TO MOVE FROM A KNEE-DEEP MIXTURE OF MUD, MANURE and URINE.
“I saw more than 10 HORSES IN ONE PEN TRYING TO ESCAPE the quagmire, but their legs were suctioned deep into the mud,” Friday said, adding she also saw 30 HORSES LAYING DOWN IN THE MUD THE ENTIRE THREE HOURS she was at the facility.
The video contains disturbing images of once-wild horses penned in areas where they were unable to navigate out of a knee-deep mixture of mud, manure, and urine. Friday, a wild horse adopter and long-time horsewoman, reports of seeing 30 horses laying down in mud and excrement for the entire three hours in which she was at the facility. ”They never got up,” she states.
“I saw more than 10 horses in one pen alone trying to escape the quagmire but their legs were suctioned deep into the mud,” explains Friday.
“Seeing wild horses in this kind of squalor is heart-breaking,” says Ginger Kathrens, Director of The Cloud Foundation who has spent 17 years documenting the wild lives of horses in her Cloud productions for PBS. “I don’t understand how BLM can justify the removal of these animals from the safety of their wild homes, only to dump them into these hellish conditions. I seriously doubt that the American taxpayers want their money used for this kind of cruelty.”

We got this kitty out of the shelter a few weeks ago and he had a pretty bad Upper Respiratory. We had him on IV fluids and he was well enough to go to a foster home this past Friday. Too make a long story short, the foster gave him a bath Saturday am. His temperature a few hours later went to 94.8 degrees. The foster used a heating pad to warm him up and well, it worked, but the foster used the heating pad for the next 2 days and had it on HIGH HEAT L L L Yesterday I got a call saying something was wrong with his fur- it is falling off and blood all over the place. We rushed him to the vets where he stayed overnight. The cat had suffered major 3-4 degree burns. Wound was cleaned as best they could and IV Fluids and MAJOR pain meds used. Euthanasia was recommended – I could not do it and wanted to see how he did overnight.
The pictures below are from this morning which actually is a far improvement from last night. I don’t even want to show you what he looked like last night…It was HORRENDOUS, TEAR JERKING. I have cried so much my eyes are puffy. This was so preventable – This poor cat L L L The kitty is being treated now and stable. We might want to move him to a more critical 24/hour care center if we can get funds and also want to do some further testing because the doctor is worried about any underlying conditions because why did the kitty not move himself from the scolding heating pad? I guess there are many reasons it could be, including falling asleep…I don’t know.

Natuurhulpcentrum te Opglabbeek (België), heeft ze al eens in beslag genomen en toen heeft de eigenaar de ruimte van de tijgers iets vergroot zodat hij aan de wettelijke normen voldeed. De wettelijke normen zouden moeen zijn dat deze prachtige dieren niet zouden mogen worden opgesloten ! Ook nu zijn er nog steeds misstanden !
