HARTFORD, CT — Kenway's owner cared enough to put a collar on him, but apparently not enough to give him the food he needed.
By the time Hartford Animal Control officer Sherry DeGenova found the small dog near the Charter Oak area earlier this week, he was hypothermic and emaciated and didn’t have the strength to stand. She rushed him to a vet clinic in Windsor, where she and staff wrapped him in blankets and took all measures to try to save him.
DeGenova named the dog Kenway because it means "brave warrior."
“Kenway’s body temperature never registered,” she said yesterday. “He was swarmed over by loving, caring people. They worked on getting him warm and dry. We decided we had to give him a chance.”
“I held his little head in my hands, and I looked at him and said, ‘Fight!’ But Kenway was just too weak, and he lost his battle and died. He didn’t have the strength.”
“RIP, Kenway,” commented DeGenova. “You will forever have a piece of my heart!”
REPORT IT, DON’T IGNORE IT
The dog had clearly been in poor condition for a long time. Because of the circumstances of where he was found, it is likely that he had been seen by one or more other local residents before an elderly man first saw him and notified authorities.
"The man called the police immediately, which is the only reason Kenway got to pass in some level of peace," said a person involved in trying to save him. "Thanks to that gentleman."
If animal control had been notified of the neglected dog sooner, chances would have been good for his survival.
DeGenova stresses the need to remind people that if they see or suspect animal neglect or abuse—whether by a neighbor, stranger, or even a family member—they can report it anonymously.
“People need to know that they can make these reports, and they don’t have to leave their name.”
Referring to Kenway, she says, “I don’t want to let his senseless death be in vain. We need to stop animal abuse! We need to get people to report it. He suffered a long time—for no reason!”
Most cases of animal cruelty are discovered—and the animal helped—because someone has reported the situation.
An abuser doesn’t have to hit an animal to be cruel to him. If there is an animal in your community who isn’t being cared for properly, that is neglect—which is a type of cruelty.
According to the ASPCA, “Animal cruelty occurs when someone intentionally injures or harms an animal or when a person willfully deprives an animal of food, water, or necessary medical care.”
Signs of possible animal cruelty or neglect can include the following:
Extremely thin animal
Animal that is limping
Person striking or otherwise physically hurting an animal
Animal that is repeatedly deprived of sufficient food and/or water—often this animal is kept so that it lives alone outside, such as chained or in a pen
Animal that is injured or obviously ill and not receiving veterinary care
Animal that is kept outdoors without sufficient shelter in extreme weather conditions
To report a neglected or abused animal in the Hartford area, call Animal Control at (860) 757-4390 (860) 757-4390 Again, callers reporting animal cruelty are not required to give their name.
Outside of the Hartford area, call your local police department or animal shelter to report animal cruelty. For further contact information, visit the ASPCA’s searchable shelter database (www.aspca.org/adoption/shelters) of nearly 5,000 community humane societies and animal-control organizations.
Reporting animal cruelty and neglect goes beyond helping animals. Studies have shown that individuals who are cruel to animals can also be capable of violent or harmful behavior toward people.
Safe People–Safe Pets (www.safepeoplesafepets.org) is a nonprofit organization that combines the resources of human and animal-services professionals to increase awareness of this correlation. The group notes:
“Recent research indicates that violence toward animals serves as a symptom and a predictor of other violent behavior. … When animal abuse can be detected early, it not only saves innocent pets from senseless abuse or death but also alerts authorities to criminal or abusive behavior, leads to help for children who are developing a pattern of violence, and saves society and the justice system the heavy costs involved in dealing with serious violent offenders.” —Safe People-Safe Pets
If you notice an animal in distress, do the right thing. Report it. Help raise awareness of animal cruelty and the need to speak out against it.
Don’t let little Kenway’s death be in vain.

NaturalNews) It's common knowledge that Hitler was a vegetarian. Just ask anybody: They'll tell you so. Trouble is, the assumption is false. Hitler wasn't a vegetarian at all. Consider the historical facts:
• Biographers who wrote about Hitler (and who knew him quite well on a personal basis) openly describe his love for Bavarian sausages and game pie ("game" meaning wild meat from birds and other creatures).
• Hitler's own chef openly talked about Hitler's love for stuffed pigeon.
• In none of Hitler's speeches or writing did Hitler state he was a vegetarian or speak in favor of vegetarianism.
• Hitler was regularly given injections of a protein serum made from the testicles of a bull -- not exactly a treatment that would be tolerated by vegetarians.
• None of Hitler's lieutenants were vegetarians, nor was vegetarianism promoted in any way in the Nazi party.
In fact, Hitler suffered from severe flatulence (where do you think the idea for the gas chambers came from?) and was advised by doctors to follow a vegetarian diet from time to time in order to calm the gas attacks. This is probably where the myth about Hitler being a vegetarian first originated. No doubt his lieutenants wanted Hitler to be a vegetarian; especially the ones seated closest to him at the dinner table.
By the way, according to the above-mentioned article, the New York Times' definition of vegetarianism includes cooked ham. I suppose if you define vegetarianism as including cooked ham and sausages, then sure, Hitler was a vegetarian. But you'd have to be a numbskull to adopt that definition in the first place.
Speaking of myths about Hitler, it turns out Hitler wasn't an atheist, either. As he stated himself in Mein Kampf (1925): "I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews, I am doing the Lord's work."
Nazi soldiers wore belt buckles with the inscription Gott mit uns (God is with us), and they routinely engaged in religious blessings of the troops by invoking the power of God at the Catholic Church.
Does this mean anything to us today? Nope. Opponents of vegetarianism or atheism are always pointing to Hitler as an example "proving" how wrong-headed those philosophies are, but it's just meaningless talk. I just pointed out that Hitler was actually a meat-eating Catholic. Does that mean that all meat eaters and Catholics are evil? Of course not.
Hitler spoke German, too. Does that mean all German-speaking people are evil? Of course not.
The truth is that one person's actions, no matter how insane, do not represent the philosophies of entire groups to which he may momentarily belong.
The valid comparisons between modern-day politicians and Hitler should, in my view, focus on the use of fear to promote war, the use of staged false-flag attacks to incite anger among the population, and the use of empty oration to create a loyalist following that dangerously concentrates political power into the hands of the few. Hitler was also in favor of gun confiscation, gold confiscation and eugenics programs, all of which are highly relevant in the modern world. And it goes without saying that he placed no value on the lives of many humans -- a view shared today by most multinational corporations.
On the other hand, as some will no doubt point out, Hitler was the chief force behind the building of Germany's autobahn highway system, and he helped push through the first Volkswagon "car for the masses" that made automobile transportation affordable. Looking carefully at history shows that even the most evil, dangerous men can easily frame their actions as accomplishments for the People. This is highly relevant to remember as our own President Bush is attempting to reframe his legacy today.
One thing for sure is that Bush was no vegetarian.
Several Spanish activists arrested on Wednesday and accused of carrying out mink liberations, are currently on hunger strike.
Jose Valle and Sharon Núńez from Animal Equality, and David Herrero from Equanimal, arrested last Wednesday 22 June in Madrid, were called to give their statements last night at 12pm in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. They declared that they are currently on hunger strike, and are reserving their right to not make a statement. They will shortly go before the Magistrate's Court.
They have sent the following message through their lawyer, Daniel Dorado:
“We are OK. This is a clear attack on antispeceisist organisations and our work revealing the horrors of animal exploitation.”
José Ramón Mallén, one of the detained Equanimal activists, also sent a message through his lawyer:
“Those of us that are inside are holding up. Four of the activists detained in A Coruńa are already on hunger strike, and those that are not on hunger strike are receiving lettuce and tomato sandwiches. They are trying to suppress us, and it is evident that the activism that is carried out by the people detained, is not the type of activism for which we are being suppressed. We are dealing with a police set-up. We are doing all we can from inside. We need you to join together, to protest, to organise demonstrations demanding our freedom. They are trying to stop our movement. Show them from inside and outside that they cannot.”
The origin of the police investigations appears to be centred on the seemingly intentional release of 20,000 minks from the farm Visones Bermúdez, located in Santiago de Compostela, in November 2007, which both organisations deny having any part in.
Both Animal Equality and Equanimal have publicly condemned the deprivation of freedom, torture and massacre of more than 300,000 minks every year by the Spanish fur trade, and carried out extensive undercover investigations and high-profile public awareness campaigns into Spanish mink farms over the last few years. These arrests therefore represent a clear attack by the fur industry against animal activists for highlighting the horrors of a practice in which the gassings, mutilations and captivity-induced suffering of mink on fur farms are inherent and widespread.
Due to the fact that the authorities have no-one to hold responsible for the mink liberations, various members of Equanimal and Igualdad Animal / Animal Equality have been arrested in an attempt to criminalise the animal rights movement in Spain, as has already happened in other European countries. The animal exploitation lobbies and powerful multinationals wish to put the brakes on the growing animal rights movement in Spain, and now we are seeing the arrival of repression.
Joint statement from Animal Equality and Equanimal
25 June 2011
Between yesterday and today the examining magistrate number 2 from Santiago de Compostela released eight of the eleven detainees on bail with charges, while three other activists were placed on remand in custody.
The only activist not yet arrested today voluntarily presented himself but has not been taken into custody and has been given his first hearing for next Monday.
We are both legally constituted organisations, with a long history of work in the animal rights movement and with growing public awareness and support from society for our work. We do not carry out the type of activism for which we are being accused of. If there is one thing that characterises our activism, it is the peaceful nature and transparency of our actions, since everything that we do is within the public domain.
We do not have anything to hide, and to demonstrate that this is true, on several occasions we have invited the media to accompany us on our investigations or other activities, such as our non-violent direct action such as jumping into bullrings or interrupting fur shows. As such, we request that all those detained are freed, since they are innocent of the offences they have been charged with.
Spanish activists greeted by supporters outside Santiago de Compostela court
24 June 2011
The Spanish activists who were being held in police stations in A Coruńa have now been transferred to Santiago de Compostela, where various supporters were waiting for them at the entrance to the court and were able to give them messages of support.
We have been informed that on seeing the supporters, many smiled and Eladio Ferreira, of Equanimal, shouted to the press “You are jailing those who peacefully defend animals: animal rights now!” Supporters could be heard shouting "You are not alone!"
The origin of the police investigations appears to be centred on the seemingly intentional release of 20,000 minks from the farm Visones Bermúdez, located in Santiago de Compostela, in November 2007, which both organisations deny having any part in.

1:35pm Thursday 23 June UPDATE ON THE SPANISH AR ACTIVISTS by Animal Equality on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 3:40pm
The lawyer who is assisting the twelve Spanish activists has told us that the treatment of those detained is currently adequate, although they are not being given a vegan diet. Some of the activists have declared themselves on hunger strike until they receive vegan food. The activists are being held incommunicado - which without diminishing the severity of the situation - is the usual procedure before going before a judge.
They are calm, but strong and determined, and many people are currently working on this situation. Many thanks for all the support that has been received so far.
You can make your support for the detained activists reach further by calling the police stations in Santiago de Compostela and A Coruńa where they are currently being held and enquiring about the health of the activists..
The following is a suggested text to read:
“Hello. I am calling because I am concerned about the health of the activists who were arrested yesterday and who are currently being held in the police station. I would like to request that they be given a vegan diet.. I wish to express my concern for the health of those detained, and in particular, Sharon Nunez Gough, who has certain health problems.”

On the morning of Wednesday 22 June 2011, 12 Spanish activists were arrested in Madrid, Asturias, Vizcaya and Galicia, including members of the organisations Animal Equality and Equanimal.
The activists were detained, and taken to Santiago de Compostela court, where they were accused of offences against the environment, public disorder, and criminal association. Many years' worth of investigation and campaign materials were taken by the police from their homes, also computers and equipment.
These raids were ordered by the Judge from the Magistrate's Court, Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain, in relation to the release of 20,000 minks in 2007 from a farm in Santiago de Compostela. Both organisations deny having any involvement in these actions, although they do not condemn them either.
The arrests of these 12 activists represent a clear attack by the fur industry against animal activists for highlighting the horrors of a trade where gassings, mutilations and captivity-induced suffering of mink on fur farms are inherent and widespread. Both Animal Equality and Equanimal have been involved in investigating Spanish mink farms and have mounted successful public awareness campaigns on the fur industry over the last few years.
We have nothing to hide, and we will continue to give a voice to non-human animals; and to demand that they receive equal respect. We will continue to be the voice of the 50 million plus individuals who are killed each year for the clothing industry - all in the name of fashion - including the 30,000 minks who are tortured and killed for "fashion" each year in Spain.

Twelve animal rights activists were arrested this morning by the Spanish police, in a series of raids sanctioned by the judge from the Magistrate's court, Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain. Arrests and house searches of activists from the organisations Igualdad Animal/Animal Equality and Equanimal took place in the regions of Madrid, Asturias, Vizcaya and Galicia. The detained activists were then taken to Santiago de Compostela court, where they were accused of offences against the environment, public disorder, and criminal association.
The origin of the investigations appears to be centred on the seemingly intentional release of 20,000 minks from the farm Visones Bermúdez, located in Santiago de Compostela, in November 2007, which would indicate the supposed damage to the environment. Both organisations have denied any involvement, but do not condemn the action.

These two organisations, which define their activism as being non-violent, dedicate their efforts to raising public awareness of animal rights, by informing society of the consequences of the consumption of animal products and the promotion of alternatives. Even though the organisations were not involved in the mink liberations, neither do they condemn these types of actions, to the extent that they defend the interests of all animals regardless of species, as none of the minks exploited by the fur industry deserves to live and die on a Spanish fur farm.
Due to the fact that the authorities have no-one to hold responsible for the mink liberations, the various members of Equanimal and Igualdad Animal / Animal Equality have been arrested in an attempt to criminalise the animal rights movement in Spain, as has already happened in other European countries. The animal exploitation lobbies and powerful multinationals wish to put the brakes on the growing animal rights movement in Spain, and now we are seeing the arrival of repression.
Equanimal and Igualdad Animal/Animal Equality are holding two simultaneous press conferences today 22/06/11 in order to read a statement in response to the unjust arrests of these twelve activists from both organisations, at 8pm in Madrid and Barcelona.
Tomorrow, Thursday 23 June, peaceful protests will also be held in Madrid and Barcelona, in order for everyone who is against these arrests to show their rejection of the events and display their support and solidarity for the detained activists.
On Friday 24 June, we want to call for an international day of solidarity for the Spanish activists.
Please consider organising a demonstration in support of these activists in front of Spanish embassies or in city centres on Friday 24 June.
