In America we are bombarded with advertisements attempting (successfully I might add) to get us to constantly consume meat and dairy products.People that we look up to are paid millions of dollars to lure us into desiring McDonalds and other fast food franchises; the Food And Drug Administration (FDA) is always telling us that we should eat meat as a part of our diets and we never look into the health effects of eating meat or consuming milk and other dairy products.But the reality is that we are eating ourselves to death.Let us look into the harmful effects of eating simple hamburgers.

In Kameroen zijn in de afgelopen weken meer dan 200 olifanten uitgemoord in een reservaat in het noorden van het land. De daders zijn gewapende stropers uit Sudan, die het natuurpark in hun greep houden.
Dat meldt de Spaanse krant El País vandaag. In het reservaat Bouba N'djida leefden ongeveer 400 olifanten, waarvan nu dus de helft op brute wijze is afgemaakt. De Cameroon Tribute spreekt over 'massamoord op olifanten', een verhaal dat andere websites in Kameroen hebben overgenomen.
De Sudanese stropers hebben hun basis in Tsjaad en opereren met lokale handlangers. De stropers zouden behoren tot een illegaal netwerk dat in ivoor handelt. In het naburige Tsjaad is de olifantenpopulatie al zo goed als uitgeroeid. Onlangs werden zes militairen uit Tsjaad doodgeschoten, toen ze Sudanese stropers probeerden tegen te houden.
De olifanten worden gedood, hun slagtanden worden meegenomen en de karkassen blijven liggen. De lokale bevolking profiteert hiervan door het vlees eraf te halen. Volgens een getuige in de Cameroon Tribute worden de laatste weken grote stukken olifantenvlees verhandeld langs de hoofdwegen in het gebied. (Stephanie van Strijen)
Stropers uit Sudan en Tsjaad hebben de afgelopen 2 maanden in Kameroen al bijna 500 olifanten gedood. Dit is van een veldwachter van het nationale park Bouba Ndjida in het noorden van het Afrikaanse land vernomen. Vorige week was nog sprake van de dood van zeker 200 olifanten, maar dat aantal werd vandaag naar boven bijgesteld.
Mogelijk zijn er nog meer olifanten gedood omdat de parkwachters geen volledig overzicht hebben over het 2200 vierkante kilometer grote natuurgebied. Aanvankelijk meldden zij in de Spaanse pers dat er maar sprake van was in totaal 400 olifanten in het reservaat.
Volgens de dierenbeschermingsorganisatie IFAW zijn er veel olifantenwezen gezien die alleen rondzwerven. De natuurbeschermers vrezen dat de olifantjes binnenkort doodgaan van honger en dorst.
Smokkel De stropers hebben het gemunt op de slagtanden van de olifanten. Volgens IFAW wordt het ivoor Afrika uit gesmokkeld voor markten in Azië en Europa. Met het geld worden wapens aangeschaft die in regionale conflicten gebruikt worden zoals in Darfur (Sudan) en in de Centraal-Afrikaanse Republiek. (ANP/Redactie)
Een Siamese steppeschildpad met twee hoofden en zes poten wordt tentoongesteld in het museum voor natuurwetenschappen in Kiev, waar bezoekers het reptiel gedurende twee maanden kunnen zien.
De vijfjarige schildpad heeft een schild in de vorm van een hart van zo'n twaalf centimeter breed. 'Het is niet zozeer een schildpad met twee hoofden in de strikte zin van het woord, maar eerder twee Siamese schildpadden', verklaarde Joeri Joeravliov, een zoöloog van de maatschappij Ekzoland, die de expositie organiseert. 'Dit wijfje heeft twee hoofden, twee harten, vier voorpoten en twee achterpoten en slechts een darmkanaal.'
Verschillend voedselpatroon 'De twee hoofden hebben verschillende kenmerken, zelfs in hun voedselpatroon. Het linkse, dominanter en actiever, houdt van groen voedsel, het andere van warmer gekleurde producten zoals wortelen of paardenbloemen', zegt de zoöloog.
Zeldzaam Deze steppeschildpad, een soort die voorkomt in Centraal-Azië en die vijftig tot zestig jaar kan worden, werd gekocht van een Oekraïner, die het reptiel al sinds zijn geboorte in zijn bezit had. Her name is Tina. She was born three months ago, at the beginning of winter, in the garden of a residential compound notorious for having a management extremely hostile to animals. Rumor goes that Mr. Ahmet the manager has been personally involved in poisoning campaigns and in the shooting of stray cats in the area.
It's in this environment that Tina, is trying to make a living (for lack of a better ).
This morning we noticed Tina had a very bad injury at the base of her leg. At first, from the distance, it looked like if she had somehow got a rubber band stuck on her tail. Upon closer inspection we realized that the tail was badly infected by necrosis and that infection was quickly spreading.
Tina must have been in excruciating pain for many days, unfortunately noone did anything to help her. People just watched, until today.
Tina has been rescued and rushed to our clinic to understand what is the problem with her leg. At this stage we don't know exactly what has caused the injury, but due to the onset of necrosis we are going to have no other alternative than amputate her tail and pray that we will be able to contain the infection.
This is an emergency situation that cannot be delayed further, which is why we only keep this Chipin running for the next 48 hours. So please, if you can, help us save Tina the kitty..

Artsen en microbiologen hebben er bij de bestrijding van infectieziekten sinds kort een mooi hulpmiddel bij. In de ‘Atlas of Human Infectious Diseases‘ is alle beschikbare kennis over de verspreiding van infectieziekten bijeengebracht. Ook ziekten als knokkelkoorts en Q-koorts komen aan de orde.
De atlas toont niet alleen waar verschillende infectieziekten voorkomen, maar probeert ook antwoord te geven op de vraag waarom dat zo is. Dat gebeurt met kaarten over bevolkingsdichtheid, ontbossing, verstedelijking en allerlei andere factoren die een rol spelen.
De auteurs zijn bezig een interactieve website op te zetten waar de Atlas permanent geactualiseerd kan worden. Naar verwachting komt die volgend jaar in de lucht.
Groter probleem
De gedachte dat infectieziekten gaan verdwijnen is een illusie gebleken, zegt arts-microbioloog Heiman Wertheim, de belangrijkste auteur van de atlas.
Niet zo lang geleden zag het ernaar uit dat het probleem op z’n minst beheersbaar zou worden. Grote vaccinatieprogramma’s en de beschikbaarheid van antibiotica gaven de mens er greep op.
Infectieziekten zijn er, blijven er en dreigen weer een groter probleem te worden, zegt Wertheim. “De toenemende antibioticaresistentie, de globalisering en eigenlijk heel het menselijk gedrag, zorgen daarvoor.”
Wertheim noemt als voorbeeld bacteriën die resistent zijn voor de laatst beschikbare categorie antibiotica, de carbapenems. “Die komen in India in alle ziekenhuizen op grote schaal voor. Doordat mensen steeds meer reizen, tref je die bacteriën nu ook steeds vaker in ziekenhuizen in Europa aan.”
Knokkelkoorts in de stad
Klimaatverandering en ecologische veranderingen spelen een al even grote rol. Ontbossing ten behoeve van landbouw en veeteelt verstoort de ecologische evenwichten. Ook verstedelijking is een belangrijke factor bij de verspreiding van infectieziekten.
“Denguemuggen houden erg van de stad. Daar gedijen ze heel goed. Overal zijn potjes en pannetjes met restjes water. Er is veel schaduw van de gebouwen en er zijn veel mensen dicht bij elkaar. Een ideale omgeving voor die mug. In Azië neemt het stedelijk gebied jaarlijks met drie procent toe.”
Dengue (knokkelkoorts) is een infectieziekte die met plotselinge zeer hoge koorts, zware hoofdpijn en pijn in spieren en gewrichten gepaard gaat. Het kan ook leiden tot een maagdarmontsteking en soms tot bloedingen. Patiënten die dengue met bloedingen krijgen, raken soms in shock en lopen dan grote kans te overlijden.
Q-koorts en hartkleppen
De infectieziektenatlas kan artsen helpen bij het stellen van hun diagnoses. Stel een Nederlandse toerist belandt in Zuid-Amerika in het ziekenhuis met een ontsteking aan de hartkleppen. Dan is het belangrijk om te weten dat in Nederland een grote uitbraak van Q-koorts is geweest die in ernstige gevallen een infectie van de hartkleppen kan veroorzaken.
De atlas is een wetenschappelijke uitgave die toegankelijk is voor zowel leken als experts. Het boekwerk is niet bedoeld voor reizigersadviezen, benadrukt dr. Wertheim.

Heb ik net geschreven dat er zwaar verwaarloosde katten in Utrecht in beslag zijn genomen en krijg ik weer zo’n vreselijk bericht binnen van 3 zwaar verwaarloosde Mechelse herders. Komt hier nooit een eind aan? Dierenmishandeling, kinderverkrachters, vrouwenmishandeling, in wat voor vreselijke wereld leven wij eigenlijk?Vergeef het me, ik moest het even kwijt.
ALMERE/VINCENT SCHOT – Hondenliefhebbers hebben gisteren een lugubere vondst gedaan in de omgeving van het trainingsterrein van H.S.V. Almere in het Weteringpark langs de A6. In een vervallen aanhanger werden drie zwaar verwaarloosde en vervuilde Mechelse herders aangetroffen. De politie en medewerkers van de Dierenambulance hebben de dieren in beslag genomen.
Colette Bertram was één van de hondenliefhebbers die aanwezig waren toen de dieren uit hun benarde positie werden bevrijd. ,,De honden zaten in een veel te klein karretje en hun geblaf viel mensen op. Daarop hebben zij de politie gebeld’’, vertelt het raadslid van de PVV. Bertram, zelf eigenaar van een Mechelse herder, werd ook gebeld door de aanwezigen. Het beeld van de honden krijgt zij naar eigen zeggen maar moeilijk van haar netvlies af. ,,Het karretje zat vol met uitwerpselen en de zwaar ondervoede honden hadden geen water of eten. Omdat de dieren de angst in hun ogen hadden staan moesten ze met vangstokken in bedwang gehouden worden.’’ Bertram kondigde vanmorgen aan dat zij volgende week aan het college vragen gaat stellen over het leed van de dieren.
De politie laat via woordvoerder Elvera Kuipers weten dat de eigenaar van de honden bekend is, maar dat deze nog niet is aangehouden. Voor verwaarlozing kán volgens haar tot twee jaar celstraf worden opgelegd. ,,De honden zijn in opdracht van het OM in beslag genomen en overgebracht naar een opvang.‘‘

Tijdens een gezamenlijke controle met de dierenpolitie Utrecht heeft de Landelijke Inspectiedienst Dierenbescherming vier verwaarloosde katten uit een woning in Utrecht gehaald. De eigenaar krijgt van de politie proces-verbaal voor het verwaarlozen van de dieren.
De katten hadden geen water of eten tot hun beschikking. Bovendien was het huis waarin ze leefden ernstig vervuild. Omdat de leefomstandigheden van de katten onacceptabel waren en er geen contact kon worden gelegd met de eigenaar, is besloten de katten weg te halen.
De dieren zijn in opdracht van Dienst Regelingen van het ministerie van Economische Zaken, Landbouw en Innovatie in bewaring genomen. Ze zijn overgebracht naar een opvangadres waar ze op kosten van de eigenaar worden verzorgd.

Wanneer je op de locatie Duivenstraat Oss 40 (nummer kan ik helaas niet zeggen) een chihuahua puppy of andere puppy wilt kopen (of waar dan ook ? waar de toestand verdacht is) DOE DAT NIET!
Dit zijn hele slechte, gewetenloze doorverkopers die pups van broodfokkers doorverkopen vlak voordat ze dood gaan!!
Ik hoop dat ik met mijn verhaal wat bewustwording teweeg brengt en je kan behoeden voor dit vreselijke scenario. Ik heb (naast vele andere mensen ook) een Chihuahua pup in Oss gekocht, die op de eerste dag al heel ZIEK was en op dag 2 aan het infuus moest; de eerst gestelde diagnose was hypoglycemie (suiker problemen ) door ondervoeding, ; braken, diarree, geen eet en drink lust en vocht tekort.
De fokkers zijn op de hoogte maar doen zeer moeilijk en hangen op aan de telefoon. Boos worden en dreigen heeft geen zin; ze weten hoe ze t moeten spelen en ondertussen zit je met een hopeloos ziek pupje.
Het is ontzettend stom dat ik geen research naar deze fokkers heb gedaan, (de zogenaamde Oss chihuahua broodfokkers en ben door deze ervaring zelf bewust geworden van de gehele broodfok gruwel. Doordat ik de pup heb gekocht bij een doorverkoper (die een normaal, gezond gezinsleven schetste) had ik geen idee wat het arme beestje al had moeten doorstaan. ------------------------

Gedurende
vele jaren reeds zetten wij ons in voor dierenwelzijn en samen met ons vele
dierenwelzijnsorganisaties en vele landgenoten. Keer op keer hebben wij klachten
ingediend bij de overheid om wantoestanden aan te klagen. Wij hebben klachten
ingediend bij de Federale Dienst Dierenwelzijn en andere instanties over de
onwaarschijnlijke toestanden in bepaalde asielen, de onmenselijke behandeling
van dieren bij bepaalde fokkers die hun dieren slecht behandelen en gewetenloos
zieke puppy’s verkopen. Maar de overheid heeft niet
ingegrepen.
Waarom
doet de overheid niets?
Wij
hebben geen inspanningen gespaard om deze nodeloze dierenmishandeling te
verhelpen.
E-mails,
telefoontjes, persoonlijke contacten en kranten artikels, het heeft allemaal
niet mogen baten. Wij kregen zelfs geen antwoord op onze klachten. De overheid
wil niet horen.
Het
is dan ook teneinde raad dat wij ons tot u richt met het dringend verzoek de
nodige maatregelen te treffen opdat de Dienst Dierenwelzijn de aangeklaagde
toestanden ernstig zou nemen en de klachten van dierenverwaarlozing en
dierenmishandeling de nodige aandacht en een passend gevolg zou geven.
Dergelijke klachten worden al te gemakkelijk door de overheid als overdreven of
onjuist geklasseerd.
Wij
rekenen dan ook op u om hierin verandering te brengen. Wij danken u voor de
aandacht die u dit verzoek wil geven en groeten u

A Healing Miracle for Burns:
Keep in mind this treatment
of burns is being included in teaching beginner fireman. First Aid consists of
first spraying cold water on the affected area until the heat is reduced which
stops the continued burning of all layers of the skin. Then, spread the egg whites onto the affected
area.
One
woman burned a large part of her hand with boiling water. In spite of the pain,
she ran cold tap water on her hand, separated 2 egg whites from the yolks, beat
them slightly and dipped her hand in the solution.The
whites then dried and formed a protective layer. She later learned that the egg
white is a natural collagen and continued during at least one hour to apply
layer upon layer of beaten egg white. By afternoon she no longer felt any pain
and the next day there was hardly a trace of the burn. 10 days later, no trace
was left at all and her skin had regained its normal colour. The burned area was
totally regenerated thanks to the collagen in the egg whites, a
placenta full of vitamins.

Staatsbosbeheer mag dit voorjaar geen helikopter inzetten om edelherten, heckrunderen en konikpaarden in het natuurgebied de Oostvaardersplassen te tellen. Dat meldde de provincie Flevoland vandaag.
De provincie weigert een vergunning af te geven omdat nestelende lepelaars mogelijk gestoord worden door de helikoptervluchten. Staatsbosbeheer gebruikte afgelopen najaar voor het eerst een helikopter voor de telling. Volgens een provinciewoordvoerder is dat geen probleem omdat de broedtijd dan voorbij is.
De helikoptermethode bleek een stuk effectiever dan tellingen vanaf de grond. Door de onherbergzaamheid van het gebied was het vooral lastig om het aantal edelherten te tellen. Zo werden vanuit de helikopter 3300 herten geteld, terwijl waarnemers op de grond niet verder kwamen dan 2500.
Volgens de provincie zijn er ook andere manieren om vast te stellen hoeveel grote grazers in het gebied leven. Gedacht wordt aan tellingen vanuit een vliegtuig, omdat die hoger vliegt dan een helikopter.

First came news that Shy the pit bull dumped at the kill shelter after 4 years with her family due to a new baby was moved from "To be destroyed" back to "Super Urgent" (meaning she got more time), then I find out Hong Kong Airlines has banned their practice of the shipment of exotic animals moving forward, then I find out this little guy below, Robert who... is incapable of using his hind legs, who was on the euthanasia list for today (and we all sweated over last night) was rescued by Pets Alive, then they suspend the carriage horses due to weather giving our hoofer buddies a break, THEN I find out they are officially closing the season over in Taiji right now (earlier than expected), so the cove will be blue and the dolphin pods will be safe (at least until the new season in September). In other words, none of the stories above have happy endings yet, but they all have hope. Leap, indeed.

AMSTERDAM - De Anti Dierproeven Coalitie (ADC) wil weten waarom de Radboud Universiteit vier gezonde testapen heeft ‘afgemaakt’.
De ADC vindt dat de dieren onnodig zijn gedood, terwijl ze ondergebracht hadden kunnen worden bij Stichting Aap. „Dat is een gespecialiseerd opvangcentrum waar ze nog volop kans hadden op een nieuw leven”, citeert de krant campagneleider Robert Molenaar.
De apen hadden elektroden in de hersenen die moesten worden verwijderd. Volgens een woordvoerder van de Radboud Universiteit was daarvoor een zware operatie noodzakelijk, die voor de dieren „een te zware belasting” zou zijn.
De ADC denkt echter dat de reden voor het doden van de apen te maken heeft met de hoge kosten van de operatie.

Vier Voeters redt opnieuw beer in nood Na alle dansberen in de EU te hebben bevrijd, is nu de Oekraïne aan de beurt .
Afgelopen maandag heeft de internationale dierenwelzijnsorganisatie Vier Voeters een mishandelde bruine beer in de Oekraïne van een ellendig leven gered. Het dier zal worden overgebracht naar een opvangpark en rehabilitatiecentrum in Synevyr, dat door Vier Voeters wordt ondersteund, waar hij een vrijer en gelukkig leven kan leiden volgens de hoogste maatstaven van dierenwelzijn.
De driejarige Potap is gekocht van een circus en heeft de laatste twee jaar onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden geleefd op het terrein van een hondenfokker en privé-sportclub in Luhansk. Hij leefde een ellendig leven in een kleine kooi van acht vierkante meter met een betonnen vloer. Potap is extreem ondervoed en heeft een open wond in zijn nek, het resultaat van een leren halsband die te smal was voor zijn nek. Op de sportclub worden honden gefokt en getraind voor de jacht. Potap werd als trainingsmiddel voor de honden gebruikt, zodat ze tijdens de jacht niet bang zouden zijn voor wilde beren.
Gister werd Potap in beslag genomen tijdens een reddingsactie van een Vier Voeters-team, in samenwerking met medewerkers van het berenopvangpark Synevyr en de Oekraïense overheid. De beer werd ter plekke onderzocht door dierenartsen. Hij was verzwakt maar wel in staat de 30 uur-durende rit naar Synevyr te ondergaan in een mobiele dierenkliniek. In de Oekraïne leven nog altijd meer dan 40 bruine beren onder erg slechte omstandigheden in gevangenschap. ‘De meesten leven in kleine, betonnen kooien naast restaurants, hotels, tankstations of kroegen,’ zegt dr. Amir Khalil, directeur projectontwikkeling bij Vier Voeters. ‘Wij willen een eind maken aan deze schandalige behandeling van beren, samen met de Oekraïense overheid.’ Op 3 februari 2012 tekenden de dierenwelzijnsorganisatie en de Oekraïense Minister van Milieu Zlochevskiy een overeenkomst voor het redden en opvangen van beren in privé-gevangenschap. Al eerder zorgde Vier Voeters ervoor dat dansberen verboden werden in de Europese Unie. Alle voormalige dansberen zijn ondergebracht in parken van Vier Voeters in diverse landen. Nu zal de organisatie zich inzetten voor het redden van beren die een soortgelijk leven slijten in de Oekraïne.

Such undercover
photography is needed to bring animal abuse on factory farms to public
attention, said Lindsay Rajt, a national spokeswoman for People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals. Such investigations have led to criminal prosecutions
in some states.
The proposed Utah law could discourage farm employees who
have legitimate concerns for animal cruelty from documenting and
reporting.
The public deserves a right to know what's going on behind the
scenes.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
killed more than 95 per cent of animals in its care last year at a Virginia
shelter, a shocking new report states.
The report, released by non-profit consumer
group, claims that PETA - which is known for its outspoken stance on animal
rights - were responsible for the deaths of nearly 2,000 adoptable animals last
year alone.
The records also show that the animal-rights
organization has killed more than 27,000 animals at its headquarters in Norfolk,
Virginia since 1998.

were put down at the Norfolk, Virginia PETA shelter last year alone, a report
says
Only 3,159 animals, mostly dogs and cats, were
adopted in that time.
Records from the Virginia Department of
Agriculture obtained through public records by the Centre for Consumer Freedom
show figures that are quite contrary to PETA’s mission.
Records from 2011 alone state that of the
1,992 cats and dogs received, 34 were transferred, and 24 were
adopted.
The remaining 1,911 were put down, the report
states.
‘PETA hasn’t slowed down its slaughterhouse
operation,’ CCF executive director Rick Berman said. ‘It appears PETA is more
concerned with funding its media and advertising antics than finding suitable
homes for these dogs and cats.’
The organization also runs the website
PETAkillsanimals.com, which details their claims into the organisation’s
seemingly shady operations.
More than 4 million animals are killed
annually at shelters across the nation, citing unsustainable cost of caring for
unwanted creatures and space limitations.

However, humane societies in Nevada have
successfully run ‘no-kill’ shelters. Bonney Brown, who is executive director of
the Nevada Humane Society told Newsweek that with the help of more volunteers,
2007 became their first no-kill year.
PETA media liaison Jane Dollinger told The
Daily Caller via email that most animals that fall into the Norfolk centre’s
cair are ‘somehow unadoptable.’
While she did not dispute the claims, she
qualified that many animals were killed because of ‘injury, illness, age,
aggression, or because no good homes exist for them.’
The report by CCF implies that laziness, and
not a lack of funding or volunteers, is to blame for the death rate.
The report states: ‘Despite its $37.4million
budget, PETA employees make little effort to find homes for the thousands of
animals they kill every year.’

maar keiharde realiteit!
Maar waarom wachten, waarom maakt een

niet?
Winkels zoals deze bekende keten zouden perfect al pro-actief
kunnen meewerken aan deze campagne en er nu al voor kiezen om enkel nog
cosmetica die niet getest is op dieren aan hun klanten aan te
bieden.
De Anti Dierproeven Coalitie (ADC) heeft Ici Paris XL een tijd
geleden zowel in België als Nederland een brief gestuurd. Echter zonder enige
reactie van deze winkelketen...

op dit moment liggen er helaas allerlei
verzorgingsproducten in jullie winkels waarvan de ingrediënten op dieren
zijn getest.
Deze testen omvatten toxiciteitstesten waarbij de dieren
hoge doseringen toegediend krijgen om bijvoorbeeld de veiligheid van het
product aan te tonen. Gelukkig heeft de Europese Unie enkele jaren geleden
besloten om vanaf 2013 alle dierproeven voor cosmetische doeleinden in Europa
te verbieden. Naast het verbod op dierproeven zal er ook een handelsverbod
komen. Niet langer zullen er verzorgingsproducten naar Europa geïmporteerd
mogen worden waarvan de ingrediënten of het eindproduct op dieren getest
zijn.
Helaas is er op dit moment een discussie gaande binnen de
cosmeticasector en de Europese Unie om deze regelgeving uit te stellen voor
onbeperkte tijd. Met dit uitstel zou men voorbijgaan aan de wil van de
Europese bevolking. Deze stemt in met een dierproeven- en handelsverbod voor
cosmetica.
Ik zou graag van Ici Paris XL, als belangrijke afnemer van
cosmetica, willen horen of jullie achter de 2013 deadline staan.
CHINESE farmers who torture caged bears by taking their bile and turning it into medicine are being met with a wave of revulsion from their own people.
Shock figures released last week show that 87 per cent of China’s 1.3 billion population are now against the evil trade.
As many as 20,000 mainly Asiatic black bears are “milked” daily for their bile, either through crude catheters or from holes left permanently open in their stomachs. It is then used to treat ailments like gallstones and liver disease.
Last week the Sunday Express launched a crusade calling for the Chinese Government to ban the practice. Already thousands of readers have signed our petition, which will be delivered to the Chinese Embassy in London. The tidal wave of opposition in China follows a series of embarrassing gaffes by those who support the industry. Fang Shuting, director of the China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, sparked anger last week when he claimed the bile collecting process was as harmless as “turning on a tap”.

Monica Bando, a veterinary surgeon for Hong Kong-based Animals Asia, a charity that seeks to end cruelty to animals in the region, said the agonising and unsanitary surgery kills hundreds of bears a year through diseases like liver cancer.
Guizhentang Pharmaceuticals, which farms 470 bears, was also criticised when it opened its headquarters in Fujian Province to the media last week to prove its bears were treated humanely — but banned Animals Asia. The charity later released a study by vets on 165 rescued bears at its sanctuary in Chengdu, which found nearly all had suffered ill health.

Cove Guardian Erwin Vermeulen Receives a Hero’s Welcome in Amsterdam

SzymanskiAfter recounting the tribulations of his 63 days in jail, subsequent trial and acquittal in the Wakayama Prefecture near Taiji to media gathered yesterday at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Tokyo, Sea Shepherd Cove Guardian Erwin Vermeulen jubilantly boarded a plane and headed for home. He arrived at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol at 2 p.m. today to a hero’s welcome.
Erwin was greeted by his family and 50 supporters from Sea Shepherd/ Netherlands. Numerous representatives from national radio and television news media were also present to capture his triumphant return. After many rounds of hugs and pats on the back, Erwin thanked everyone for their ongoing support while he was incarcerated. He also told the crowd assembled at the airport he was glad his ordeal had not been in vain. His experience had focused worldwide attention on the ongoing atrocities committed against the dolphins of Taiji; indeed, that is why he became a Cove Guardian in the first place.
After his brief comments, Erwin stopped into an airport bar, where someone purchased him a cold refreshing beer. He raised his glass and humbly toasted his supporters from around the globe for never giving up on him during his two months of imprisonment, saying simply, “Thank you, everyone” and “It’s good to be home.”
Erwin greeted by family, supporters, and media upon his return to the Netherlands.

behalve dat iemand in de VS geinteresseerd is om al het verkeer naar
thepiratebay.org te zien.
"Het lijkt er dus op dat het verkeer voor
ThePirateBay.org vanuit Nederland moedwillig via Californië wordt gerouteerd.
Een uiterst merkwaardige zaak."
Google blijkt ook stiekem gebruikers van
Internet Explorer te volgen, ook al geven die aan dit niet te willen. Dat
ontdekte Microsoft. Vorig week werd bekend dat Google via een truc toch tracking-cookies op de
iPhones en iPads van Safari-gebruikers plaatst. Standaard staat Safari geen
cookies van derden toe, maar Google bleek dit te omzeilen. De ontwikkelaars van
Internet Explorer vroegen zich vervolgens af of Google dezelfde praktijk bij
Microsoft's browser toepaste. "We ontdekten dat het antwoord ja is", zegt Dean Hachamovitch, Corporate Vice President van het
Internet Explorer Team.
Google gebruikt ook hier soortgelijke manieren
om de privacyinstellingen van IE-gebruikers te omzeilen om deze vervolgens te
kunnen volgen op het web. Microsoft heeft Google dan ook gevraagd om de

Blocklist Internet Explorer 9 beschikt over Tracking Protection, waardoor de truc van
Google niet meer werkt. Dit moeten gebruikers echter zelf inschakelen. Microsoft
heeft een Tracking Protection List gemaakt om Google te blokkeren, in geval de
zoekgigant met deze praktijk doorgaat. Door de Tracking Protection krijgt een
partij als Google namelijk niet de gelegenheid om cookies te plaatsen of de
gebruiker op een andere manier te volgen.
Daarnaast merkt Hachamovitch
op dat Microsoft onderzoekt wel aanpassingen het nog meer aan IE kan maken,
bijvoorbeeld door de P3P specificatie te negeren en onduidelijke cookies te
blokkeren.
Het Duitse anti-virusbedrijf G Data
lanceert binnenkort een speciale virusscanner voor internetbankieren. De
"BankGuard" is ontwikkeld om man-in-the-browser aanvallen te detecteren.
Daardoor zou de virusscanner 99% van alle banking Trojans zonder aanvullende
definities kunnen herkennen. In de eerste helft van vorig jaar vonden er in
Nederland 2418 incidenten met internetbankieren plaats, waarbij er een schade
van 11,2 miljoen euro ontstond. De meeste gevallen hadden echter betrekking op
phishing. In Duitsland ging het om 25.000 incidenten en bedroeg de schade 100
miljoen euro.
Slechts 27% van de banking Trojans zou op de eerste dag
door virusscanners worden ontdekt. Na acht uur verschijnt er al een nieuwe
versie, waardoor de beveiligingssoftware bijna altijd achter de feiten aanloopt.
In het geval BankGuard de malware niet van de computer kan verwijderen, wordt de
gebruiker afgeraden om te internetbankieren totdat het systeem is
opgeschoond.
Gebruikers van aanbiedingensite Groupon
zijn het doelwit van scammers die persoonlijke gegevens proberen te ontfutselen
en slachtoffers allerlei zaken willen aansmeren. Beveiligingsonderzoeker Julian
Sobrier van Zscaler Research ontdekte de website groupon500.com. De website belooft waardebonnen van 500
dollar voor Groupon, LivingSocial en andere aanbiedingensites. Gebruikers moeten
eerst een formulier invullen dat om naam, adres, postcode, stad, geslacht,
geboortedatum en telefoonnummer vraagt. Tevens wordt er een kleine enquête
gehouden.
Om de waardebon uiteindelijk te ontvangen moet de gebruiker
eerst nog een aanbieding kopen, zoals een Disney boek of tandenbleekmiddel.
Volgens Sobrier verdient de website geld door gebruikers proefaanbiedingen aan
te smeren waar uiteindelijk voor betaald moet worden. "Als het te mooi om waar
te zijn is, is het waarschijnlijk...een scam", aldus de onderzoeker.
Een 35-jarige inwoonster uit Kampen is
tijdens het internetbankieren een onbekend geldbedrag verloren, waarschijnlijk
door toedoen van malware. Toen ze op de banksite was ingelogd verscheen er een
zandloper in beeld en liep de site op haar laptop vast. Met haar muis kon het
slachtoffer wel op ander sites komen. De site van haar bank bleef echter vast
staan. Na ongeveer anderhalf uur werd de site van de bank voor haar weer
operationeel.
Bij controle van haar rekening zag de vrouw dat er een
aanzienlijk bedrag van haar rekening was afgeschreven. In het contact met de
bank, werd haar aangeraden niet meer de laptop te gebruiken, omdat het ernstige
vermoeden bestaat dat "met een soort virus" besmet is, zo laat de politie weten. De vrouw heeft aangifte gedaan van hacking, diefstal
van geld en vernieling van haar laptop.

Please stop these tests including tests performed for food
products like Nestea and join other major brands who do not test on animals.

description of the tests you inflict on animals to friends across the US and the
world and many of them will also avoid buying Nestle products and switch to
brands that do not inflict pain on sentient creatures for these unjustifiable
purposes. Please stop these
tests so that Nestle becomes an ethical company – I realise you will not do so
until enough people stop buying your products so we will work towards that end

While it is uncertain whether any of these cougars ever preyed on livestock, the ostensible purpose of the killings was to protect cattle that were grazing on public lands. This type of indiscriminate lethal predator control continues in almost all of the states where mountain lions occur. California is an exception in that only specific mountain lions documented to have killed livestock or threatened people are subject to lethal control by wildlife agencies. Also, in California no sport hunting of mountain lions is allowed.)
Without exception, state game and fish agencies do not treat predators like other wildlife. Even though state agencies are no longer engaged in outright extermination of predators, persecution and limited acceptance of the ecological role of predators is still the dominant attitude. State wildlife agencies only tolerate predators as long as they are not permitted to play a meaningful ecological role.
In general, they seek to hold predator populations at low numbers by providing hunters and trappers with generous “bag” limits and long hunting/trapping seasons.
The attitude of many hunters towards predators is not appreciably different than what one heard a hundred years ago, despite a huge leap in our ecological understanding of the role top predators play in the ecosystem.
Beyond the general hostility towards predators that many hunters hold, state wildlife agencies are not the objective, scientific, wildlife managers that they claim to be. Wolves, mountain lions, bears, and other predators are a direct threat to state wildlife budgets because top predators eat the very animals that hunters want to kill. Because state wildlife agencies rely upon license sales to fund their operations, maintaining huntable numbers of elk, deer, moose, and caribou is in the agencies’ self interest.

Besieged by animal rights activists, a small southeastern Bulgarian village has agreed to water down a controversial “dog spinning” ritual it has been proudly performing for ages.
In dog spinning, which is practiced in Brodilovo at the beginning of March, a dog is suspended above water on a rope.
The dog is turned repeatedly in a given direction to wind the rope, then released so that it spins rapidly in the opposite direction as the rope unwinds, until the dog falls into the water. The locals claim that the dog is not supposed to be physically hurt.
This ancient ritual of pagan origin is performed in order to prevent rabies and is a part of the traditional Kukeri rituals.
But on Saturday, under the critical eyes of animal rights activists from Sofia and Burgas, the people of Brodilovo opted for a softer version of the ritual and just threw the dog into the water without spinning it on a rope.
Days before the special date, the Bulgarian “Animal Rescue Sofia” NGO announced it would organize a visit to Brodilovo, in which the controversial “dog spinning” ritual is practiced even though it has been banned by the Mayor of the Tsarevo municipality.
“Animal Rescue Sofia” has launched a Facebook campaign to drum up support for stopping the ritual.
Dog spinning – or trichane, as locals call it – is now practiced only in Brodilovo. In 2005, the foreign media found out about the tradition and the world was outraged by its cruelty. Bulgarian animal welfare organizations also stood firmly against it.
The ritual was considered dead until 2011 when the villagers renewed it, as they were frightened by the FMD outbreak in the region. Prime Minister Boyko Borisov officially condemned it as “barbaric.”
Many of the folklore traditions of Southeastern Bulgaria dating back to pagan times are world-renowned for their uniqueness – such as the fire-dancing or nestinarstvo, which is practiced only in this region.
Beren Milla,Shama en Lala bevrijd van de kwelgeesten van ‘Bear Baiting’ !
Beren Milla, Shama en Lala bevrijd!
Goed nieuws uit Pakistan. Drie beren die in oktober werden gered van hun kwelgeesten, zijn allemaal goed aan het genezen van hun verwondingen. De gezondheid van twee van hen is zelfs zo goed vooruit gegaan dat ze zijn losgelaten in het door WSPA gefinancierde Balkasar toevluchtsoord.
De beren Milla en Shama
De beren, genaamd Milla (Elegante), Shama (Kaars) en Lala (Tulp), hebben hun plekje in het toevluchtsoord van onze partnerorganisatie Bioresource Research Centre (BRC) gevonden. Milla en Shama mengen zich onder de andere bewoners van Balkasar, terwijl Lala nog in quarantaine wordt gehouden omdat de vreselijke verwonding aan haar snuit nog onvoldoende geheeld is.
Milla is een prachtige Aziatische zwarte beer, circa vijf jaar oud. Ze heeft een roodachtige, zwart pluizige vacht. Haar gezondheid is sinds haar aankomst bij BRC dramatisch verbeterd. Milla werd veelvuldig ingezet bij de beer-hondgevecht dat verleden heeft duidelijk zijn sporen nagelaten. Op haar snuit zitten tal van littekens en ze is blind aan een oog. Toen ze uit quarantaine mocht, stapte ze vol vertrouwen het omheinde gebied binnen. De medewerkers van BRC laten ons weten dat ze smult van haar voedsel en samen met berin Shama haar nieuwe onderkomen verkent.
Shama is zo’n vijf jaar oud en heeft een dikke zwarte vacht. Net als Milla werd Shama vaak ingezet bij beer-hondgevechten. Toen ze arriveerde bij het opvangcentrum was ze gewond aan haar snuit, maar ondanks haar slechte start in het leven bleek ze betrekkelijk gezond. Shama is nieuwsgierig en ze verliet de quarantaine heel levendig. Ze wordt vaak samen met Milla gezien als ze samen het reservaat verkennen.
Lala voor haar bevrijding
Bij aankomst in het toevluchtsoord was het duidelijk dat de gapende wond op Lala’s snuit passende verzorging vergde en misschien zelfs een operatie. De wond, in wezen een gat in haar snuit, maakte het lastig om normaal te eten en in het begin wilde ze dan ook geen voedsel. De dierenarts en de medewerkers van BRC hielden haar gezondheid en herstel scherp in de gaten. Dankzij hun goede zorgen kan ze nu weer gewoon eten en heelt de wond. Desondanks wordt ze nog even in afzondering gehouden, omdat de verzorgers bang zijn dat ze tijdens het spelen met andere beren per ongeluk opnieuw verwond zou kunnen worden.
