De ecologische voetafdruk meet het menselijke verbruik van de natuurlijke rijkdommen.
Dit verbruik wordt vergeleken met het vermogen van de natuur om deze rijkdommen te hernieuwen.
De ecologische voetafdruk wordt uitgedrukt in hectaren van het aardoppervlak.
De voetafdruk (van een land, een stad of een persoon) is de totale oppervlakte die nodig is
om het voedsel en de vezels te produceren die dit land, deze stad of persoon verbruikt,
het afval te verwerken dat afkomstig is van het energieverbruik van het land, de stad of de persoon,
voor de infrastructuur van het land, de stad of de persoon.
Slechts 1/4 van het aardoppervlak is biologisch productief (bossen, zoetwatergebieden, kuststreken, weiland,
).
In 2001 bedroeg de ecologische voetafdruk 2,2 hectaren aardoppervlak per persoon - dat is 21% meer dan er beschikbaar is. Deze overschrijding betekent dat het natuurlijke kapitaal sneller wordt uitgegeven dan het zich kan herstellen.
De ecologische voetafdruk van de gemiddelde Belg bedraagt 4,9 ha van het aardoppervlak dat is 2,7 keer de ruimte die beschikbaar is per inwoner (1,8 ha van het wereldoppervlak).
