Britse soldaten schieten witte neushoorn af in Kenia

Britse militairen op oefening in Kenia hebben een witte neushoorn neergeschoten nadat het dier hen in de Riftvallei had aangevallen, zo is zondag bij de Keniaanse dienst voor dierenbescherming KWS vernomen.

De vier waren "verplicht" te schieten op het woeste dier, zei Dickson Too, hoofd van de natuurbeschermers van het KWS-reservaat in Laikipia. Volgens Too gaat het dus om een daad van wettige zelfverdediging.

Ook stropers maken jacht op de neushoorn; zijn hoorns brengen op de Aziatische markt veel geld op, en dat wegens hun vermoed heilzaam effect op de gezondheid, in het bijzonder voor het bedrijven van het liefdesspel.

Ondanks de bescherming die het dier geniet, is de neushoornpopulatie in Kenia op ruim 25 jaar tijd -van 1963 tot 1989- met 88 procent teruggelopen. Momenteel telt Kenia nog 435 zwarte neushoorns en 200 witte. (afp/belga)
