Aantal berggorilla's in Centraal-Afrika neemt opnieuw toe


Door de verbeterde veiligheidssituatie en succesvolle conservatieprogramma's is het aantal berggorilla's in Centraal-Afrika opnieuw aan het toenemen. Dat stelt waarnemend directeur operaties John Makombo van de Oegandese overheidsorganisatie Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Volgens Makombo leven er momenteel zo'n 780 berggorilla's op de flanken van de vulkanenketen van Virunga in het grensgebied tussen Oeganda, Rwanda en de Democratische Republiek Congo. "Dat is een stijging met vijf procent in vergelijking met zeven jaar geleden", stelt hij.

Stabieler
Eind jaren negentig en in de eerste jaren van dit decennium kregen de berggorilla's het zwaar te verduren. Als gevolg van de oorlogen in de regio van de Grote Meren moesten ze vaak hun natuurlijke habitat ontvluchten. Momenteel is de situatie in het oosten van Congo iets stabieler en dat bevordert de leefomstandigheden van deze zeldzame primaten.

Ook de conservatieprogramma's tegen stroperij werpen volgens Makombo steeds meer vruchten af. Volgens hem zijn de regeringen van de betrokken landen zich er beter van bewust dat de gorilla's een troef voor het toerisme kunnen zijn. (afp/adv)
