Voedsel kan lastige kinderen kalmeren

De spreuk 'Je bent wat je eet' mag dan niet in alle omstandigheden kloppen, dat er een verband bestaat tussen wat kinderen eten en hoe ze zich gedragen, daarvan zijn opvoedkundigen en wetenschappers al lang overtuigd. The Sunday Times maakt nu melding van nieuw onderzoek over het soort voedsel dat hyperactieve of agressieve kinderen kan kalmeren.

Kalmerende vetten
Het onderzoek werd geleid door professor David Benton, een professor in de psychologie aan de universiteit van Swansea die zich heeft gespecialiseerd in voedingproblemen. Zijn ploeg boog zich over de gegevens die de voorbije halve eeuw werden ingezameld over dieet, gedrag en de verbanden daartussen en dat voerde Benton tot de conclusie dat hyperactiviteit kan worden veroorzaakt door het eten dat te weinig "kalmerende" vetten bevat, zoals die zitten in visolie of door het nuttigen van te veel chocolade, zuivelproducten en granen, want die wakkeren "lastig gedrag" aan.

Benton concludeert dat er "dringend nood is aan manieren om kinderen te kunnen identificeren die ongewoon gevoelig zijn voor wat ze eten. De kans dat intolerantie voor bepaalde voeding vaker voorkomt bij kinderen met antisociaal gedrag is daarbij een nuttig vertrekpunt". Maar naast die wetenschappelijke vaststelling heeft Benton ook praktische tips. Zo kunnen lamsvlees, kip en rijst agressieve kinderen kalmeren en hebben ook bananen en appels die uitwerking.
