Eén op zes Belgen kampt met depressie

In zijn leven krijgt ruim één Belg op de zes (17,3 procent) af te rekenen met een depressie. Dat blijkt uit een grootschalige studie die de UCL uitvoerde bij 11.909 Belgen over een periode van zeven jaar, zo schrijft De Morgen. Vooral de economisch zwakkeren hebben volgens het onderzoek af te rekenen met mentale problemen. Zij riskeren ook sneller gedwongen opgenomen te worden in de psychiatrie.

Bij de sociaal zwakkeren komen veranderingen in de materiële toestand en emotionele problemen veel harder aan en hun kans op depressie en herval is bij tegenslag zelfs bijna dubbel zo groot.

Gedwongen opnames in psychiatrie neemt toe
Bovendien worden in de zorgverlening de lagere klassen achtergesteld. Terwijl welgestelde psychiatrische patiënten zich vaak een ambulante therapie kunnen veroorloven, komen armen nog veel vaker gedwongen in een psychiatrie terecht. Het aantal gedwongen opnames in de psychiatrie is in België al jaren aan het stijgen. Met zo'n 4.000 opnames per jaar liggen we zelfs voor op de meeste van onze buurlanden.

De onderzoekers pleiten voor maatregelen, zoals financiële hulp op korte termijn, preschoolse opleiding voor kinderen uit sociaal zwakkere milieus en een campagne om het stigma op te heffen. (belga/hln)
