Oudste schildpad ter wereld gestorven

Een Aldabra-reuzenschildpad is op de gezegende leeftijd van 250 jaar overleden in de dierentuin van Kolkata in India. Dat maakte de plaatselijke autoriteiten donderdag bekend. De reuzenschildpad, die naar de naam Addwaitya luistert (de Enige Echte) was de oudste schildpad ter wereld en leed aan een leveraandoening.

Historisch onderzoek laat zien dat de reuzenschildpad eerst een huisdier was van de Britse generaal Robert Clive. 130 jaar geleden verhuisde de schildpad naar de dierentuin. "We hebben documenten die aantonen dat Addwaitya minstens 150 jaar oud was. Maar onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat de schildpad wel eens 250 jaar of zelfs nog ouder was", aldus minister Barman, bevoegd voor het bosbeheer in West-Bengalen.

Volgens de minister zouden Britse zeelui de schildpad hebben meegebracht uit de Seychellen-eilanden. Ze schonken hem als cadeau aan generaal Clive. Aldabra-schildpadden leven er in het wild op de eilanden in de Indische Oceaan. Ze wegen rond de 120 kilogram en kunnen makkelijk 100 jaar oud worden.
