Man betaalt redder terug met nier

Een Bosnische man die van de verdrinkingsdood gered werd uit twintig jaar geleden, heeft eindelijk een manier gevonden om zijn redder te bedanken: door een nier te schenken.

Contact
Remco Pivic viel twintig jaar geleden in de wilde, ijskoude rivier Bosna. Toevallige voorbijganger Ahmet Adulovic sprong met gevaar voor zijn leven Pivic achterna en slaagde erin hem heelhuids op het droge te krijgen. Na deze reddingsactie hielden Pivic en Adulovic contact, een contact dat niet verbroken werd toen Adulovic emigreerde naar Canada.

Compatibel
Toen Pivic hoorde over de nierproblemen van zijn redder, bood hij meteen aan een nier af te staan. Na enige testen kwam het verlossende antwoord van de dokters: de twee waren compatibel en kwamen in aanmerking voor een transplantatie. Pivic vloog onmiddellijk naar Ottawa om zijn nier af te staan. “Eindelijk kan ik hem terugbetalen voor het redden van mijn leven twintig jaar geleden,” verklaarde hij.

Bloedbroeders
“Eerst wilde ik zijn aanbod niet aanvaarden, hij heeft tenslotte een vrouw en kinderen. Maar ik werd steeds zieker en hij drong aan, dus ben ik gezwicht. Nu zijn we bloedbroeders,” glimlacht Adulovic. (EdP)
