‘Je eitje is in wording’, meld ik Wim als ik met de koffie bij de schommelbank bij de wei aankom. We zijn aan koffie toe.
In het voorbijgaan zag ik de ene bruine kip op de bak, bedoeld voor kruiden, zitten. Daar wordt elke morgen vroeg  een ei gelegd. Soms al meteen nadat Wim het kippenhok opendoet. Deze kip trekt dan meteen een sprintje naar het terras. Vanmorgen was het iets later.
Ik begreep ineens waarom. De haan had al een uurtje lawaai staan maken op het terras. De kip zat toen onder de rododendrons. Achteraf wachtten ze tot de kust vrij was. D.w.z. zo gauw  de honden zouden ophoepelen bij de zijdeur. Die zaten natuurlijk weer op ons te wachten. Of ze slippen gauw naar binnen wanneer de deur open gaat of ze lopen met ons mee naar achteren of naar de wei.
Toen ik met de koffie naar de wei liep zag ik hare majesteit dus zitten op haar troon. Geen hond meer in de buurt. ‘Nu ben ik aan de beurt. Eindelijk’, zal de kip gedacht hebben.
Hendrik gaat zich intussen met de rest van zijn harem bemoeien. Er is nog een kip die zijn aandacht krijgt. En de rest? De drie kloeken zijn samen de hele dag in de weer met hun drie kuikens en elke avond zitten ze nog steeds boven op elkaar in het nest met hun kroost onder zich. Die hebben voorlopig even geen tijd voor Hendrik.
