It was a beautifull day ending May 1940.The sun was shining,I don't know if the birds were singing,because of the war.
But what Iknew:it wasn'tschool! I was eleven year,and looking on the English soldiers who were destroying their cars and materials.
They smashed the car-windows with pickaxes,started the engines without coolingwater,then the soldiers standed inthe row and the light things landed in the well of water.When they had finished their destructions,they taked off with a few motor-trucks direction the coast.
Meanwhile it became night and a terrible long-standing bombardment started.There were a lot of fugitives on our farm and everyone ran to the cellar.Our not firm cellar was brimfull,the projectiles passed continuous above the farm with a whistling and cutting sound.Sometimes the ground was shaking when a nearby-shrapnel drove in.
But what a mess in the cellar! Men were calling together,children crying,women praying loudly the rosary,I also prayed,but silently.
A Popering's woman continual called aloud:"Little holy Mary of St Juan,help us", An angry man silenced her with a laudness curse:"We cannot hear the projectiles!" he said.
When I heard and saw such a panic reaction by grown people,I was mortally afraid in these dangerous hours!
I awoke in the cellar the next morning;everyone already was got up,and the German soldiers were arrived.
The fugitives were allowed to return home, what they also did with a sigh of satisfaction.
