We arrived at the famous starting point of the Camino after leaving our nice Pilgrims house in St. Palais. In was 14 euro per person with breakfast in a double room or 9 euro per person in a dorm room.
Again there were a few real hills on the way but the best it yet to come. At one point there was a cross along the road. Several small stones had been symbolically left there by pelgrims who would end their trip in St-Jean. The stone symbolizes something the pelgrims wants to be put in the past or left behind.
We also want to say a few words about the wine in France. Many well intended mention that we can end a hard day with a goof glass of wine. Some of us have nevertheless managed to get through France alcohol free without regrets!!!!
We had mixed feelings entering St.Jean. Until yesterday we had not seen too many pelgrims but here the town is loaded with them. Buses full of Belgians with the bikes ready to go and with road support. It is becoming big business. Nevertheless while we were waiting to get into the hotel we met an American who had just arrived by himself all the way from Seatle. He had slept in a plane and the following night in a bunk bed on top in a hot room with 9 other people. At the same time two Australians turned up. If you work for the same company for ten years in Australia you get 3 months paid vacation. Of course the conversation turned to politics and politicians in both countries and all agreed that if more people traveled and experienced other cultures people would see that we are for the most part all the same.
Finally we add a picture for those who saw the film "The Way". The bridge is the starting point where the father is pointed in the right direction by the local police chief. The father is taking the route which his son had intended to do.
