Onze straat, Schoutstraat, is gelegen in Oostakker, niet ver van 'Het Maegher Goet', het executieoord en Volvo Trucks. Zij is een zijstraat van de Kamerijkstraat, op zijn beurt een zijstraat van de Drieselstraat.
Ze is grotendeels gelegen rond een centraal pleintje met een aantal bomen, struiken en veel gras.
De bomen die er staan zijn Trompetbomen of Catalpa's. Vandaar de naam die we gekozen hebben voor onze vereniging van buurtbewoners.
De catalpa bloeit begin van de zomer als de meeste bomen en struiken eromheen al lang uitgebloeit zijn. Ze krijgt dan grote witgele bloemen. Lange bruine peulen die door de stormwind al gauw afgerukt worden kun je eventueel in een bundeltje als decoratie in je huiskamer ophangen.
Dergelijke bomen, waarvan we een prachtexemplaar hebben, kunnen 18 meter hoog en 10 meter breed worden.
Het woord Catalpa komt van het Indiaans catawba (= mensen van de rivier). De indianen (Sioux) gebruikten delen van deze boom als geneesmiddel. De nederlandstalige naam 'trompetboom' komt door de vorm van de bloemen.
Een bijzondere eigenschap van de Catalpa: hij houdt muggen en vliegen op afstand.
