ALIEN INVADERS WATCHING? SCIENTISTS DEVISE LASER ‘CLOAK’ TO HIDE EARTH FROM HOSTILE EXTRATERRESTRIAL CIVILIZATIONS [VIDEO]

Scientists have devised a method to “cloak,” or hide, the Earth from potentially hostile advanced alien civilizations. According to scientists, we could cloak or hide the Earth from hostile alien planet hunters seeking potentially habitable planets by firing laser beams into outer space to disrupt efforts by extraterrestrial astronomers to detect signals that betray our planet’s presence as it orbits the Sun in the habitable zone.

The proposal by Professor David Kipping and and his graduate student Alex Teachey, two astronomers at Columbia University in New York, comes in response to fears that just as astronomers on Earth are scanning the skies in search of potentially habitable exoplanets, technologically advanced alien civilizations located near distant stars may also be searching our solar system for potentially habitable planets.

Prominent scientists, such as the astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, have voiced concern about the potential dangers of our world being discovered by more advanced alien civilizations. A hostile, advanced extraterrestrial civilization that discovers us could decide to invade and take over our world. Even if an alien civilization that discovers our world “comes in peace,” first contact could be very risky because they could introduce deadly diseases that humans on Earth have no defenses against and thus expose humanity to the risk of extinction.

According to Kipping and Teachey, we could make our world invisible and effectively prevent it from being detected by advanced and possibly hostile alien races searching for potentially habitable planets by beaming a laser into space during the periods that Earth is transiting or passing in front of the Sun.

The laser would hide our planet from alien astronomers by disguising the dimming of the Sun’s light — as seen from the perspective of the observing civilization — each time Earth passes in front of the Sun. Beaming a laser with a sufficient amount of power into space could thus render Earth invisible to potential alien invaders.

The “cloaking” concept being proposed by scientists is based on the principle underlying the transit method that human astronomers have used successfully to detect exoplanets orbiting distant stars. The method involves detecting dips in the brightness of the parent star as the orbiting planet passes in front of it.

Analysis of the patterns of dips or dimming of a distant star could give astronomers information about characteristics, such as size and density, of the celestial body passing in front of the star.

“To make it look like the planet is not there at all, you’ve got to get rid of that dip. You’ve got to fill in the missing starlight.”

NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope has used the transit method to detect hundreds of planets orbiting other distant stars in our galaxy. The scientists reasoned that alien astronomers observing our solar system from a distant star in our galaxy would likely use the same method to search for potentially habitable exoplanets.

According to Kipping and Teachey, blasting laser beams into space at the time Earth is passing in front of the Sun compensates for dips in the brightness of the Sun when the Earth passes in front of it. Thus, an alien planet hunter measuring changes in solar brightness would not notice any dips.

The researchers also noted that the concept is implementable because not much energy is needed to “cloak” our planet. Dips or dimming of the Sun’s light could be masked by emitting 30 MW laser continuously for 10 hours once a year at the time the Earth is passing in front of the Sun.

Kipping explained that he thought of the idea after reports about the star KIC 8462852 that was found in 2015 to exhibit an anomalous dimming pattern which some speculated could be due to an “alien megastructure” orbiting the star.

The reports inspired Kipping to consider how an advanced civilization could deliberately alter transit signals it sends out to space to deceive alien astronomers attempting to observe the planet from a distant star.

“There is an ongoing debate as to whether we should advertise ourselves or hide from advanced civilizations potentially living on planets elsewhere in the Galaxy,” Kipping said. “Our work offers humanity a choice, at least for transit events, and we should think about what we want to do.”

The researchers noted there are other ways that an intelligent civilization could hide its world from alien observers. Instead of wiping out the transit signals of its planet entirely, a civilization could distort it. The options include deliberately erasing the signals of life that the planet sends out to space.

For instance, we could emit a laser with a power of only 160 KW into space to cloak atmospheric signatures — such as oxygen — that alien astrobiologists could interpret as signalling presence of biological life on Earth.

Kipping and Teachey emphasized that their proposed “cloaking” technique is so simple that “we could build it this next week if we wanted to.”

GREY ALIENS SIGNED TREATY WITH EISENHOWER IN 1954, AFTER U.S. GOVERNMENT REJECTED OVERTURES FROM NORDIC OR PLEIADIAN ALIENS, SAY CONSPIRACY THEORISTS

President Dwight Eisenhower held a secret meeting with extraterrestrial visitors during the early hours of February 21, 1954, while on a “vacation” to Palm Springs in California, according to UFO and alien conspiracy theorists.

He went “missing” after he was whisked away secretly to Edwards Air Force Base and was not seen until he appeared at a church service in Los Angeles the next Sunday morning.

The official explanation of his mysterious “disappearance” was that he had to undergo an emergency dental surgery.

The abrupt disappearance of the president was so unusual that it fueled speculation about an illness or death in the media. The speculation became so intense that the rumors had to be dispelled by the president’s press secretary, James Haggerty, who told incredulous reporters at a press conference that Eisenhower had damaged a tooth cap while eating fried chicken and had to undergo emergency surgery.

A local dentist was later presented to reporters who claimed he had treated Eisenhower.

But strange rumors began spreading following information leaked by well-placed sources. The rumors alleged that the local dentist was used to provide Eisenhower with a cover story while he rendezvoused secretly with the extraterrestrial visitors at the Edwards Air Force Base.

Significantly, there are no records at the Eisenhower Library — which reportedly has extensive records related to Eisenhower’s health — that he ever underwent dental surgery in February 1954, according to UFO researcher William Moore.

Eisenhower thus became the first American president to have direct contact with extraterrestrials, according to conspiracy theorists. The meeting took place at Edwards Air Force Base in southern California during the early hours of February 21 in 1954. It was the first in a series of meetings that culminated in the signing of a treaty between the U.S. government and an extraterrestrial race called the Greys.

The First Contact meeting, as it is termed in UFO conspiracy theory circles, involved some intrigue. Eisenhower’s secret First Contact meeting on February 21, 1954, is believed to have been with the Nordic aliens, also known as Pleiadian aliens, an advanced extraterrestrial race from the Pleiades star cluster with distinctive Nordic appearance, such as fair hair, blue eyes, and white skin.

The two sides were unable to reach an agreement on the night of the First Contact, and the Greys took advantage of the failure by offering more favorable terms. The offer by the Greys allegedly led to the first treaty between humans and an extraterrestrial race.

According to UFO conspiracy theorists, several pieces of circumstantial evidence add up to support claims that the Eisenhower administration held “First Contact” meetings with extraterrestrial beings. The first circumstantial evidence was the awkward manner in which Eisenhower “disappeared” during the night of February 20-21 in the midst of an unscheduled winter vacation in Palm Springs, California, and the clumsy efforts by officials to explain his disappearance.

One of the first eyewitness testimonies came from Gerald Light, a writer and leading member of the community dedicated to metaphysical research. A letter circulated widely in the UFO and alien conspiracy community, dated April 16, 1954, is alleged to have been written by Gerald Light to Meade Layne, Director of Borderland Sciences Research Foundation. In the letter (see copy here), Light allegedly claimed to have been one of a group of community leaders who was present at the First Contact meeting with extraterrestrials at Edwards Air Force Base.

The group of “community leaders” included Edwin Nourse, President’s Truman’s chief economic adviser, Cardinal James Francis MacIntyre, head of the Catholic Church in Los Angeles at the time, and 80-year-old Franklin Winthrop Allen, a former reporter with Hearst Newspaper Group.

Light claimed in the letter he allegedly wrote to Layne that he recently returned from Muroc Airfield (now Edward Air Force Base). The letter contains a single reference to “Etherians” (presumed to be the aliens), and it includes a comment about “five separate and distinct types of aircraft being studied and handled by our Air Force officials — with the assistance and permission of the Etherians!

The aircraft are believed to be alien UFOs stored at the facility for reverse-engineering studies.

The letter gives a vivid description of the bewilderment, confusion, and panic among the officials present at the meeting. UFO conspiracy theorists claim that Light’s account reveals uncertainty about how to respond to the aliens and fears due to the Cold War that the aliens could turn to the Soviets if the Americans spurned them.

But it is claimed that Eisenhower finally decided to reject the proposals of the Nordic aliens he met at the First Contact meeting at the Edwards Air Force Base in February 1954, and his administration eventually signed a treaty with the Greys, who offered to transfer their technology exclusively to the United States.

Several whistle-blowers claimed to have seen documents signed at the meetings while others claimed they obtained information from inside sources. The different versions of what allegedly transpired at the First Contact meetings leaked by the whistle-blowers agree on certain major points but differ in specific details.

One of the best-known whistle-blowers, William Cooper, a former Naval intelligence officer who allegedly had access to classified documents, claimed that the First Contact meeting at the Edward Air Force Base in February 1954 was the culmination of a series of events after astronomers discovered a fleet of huge UFOs approaching Earth in 1953. First mistaken for asteroids, they were later determined to be spaceships.

Alien radio signals were allegedly intercepted under Project Sigma just before the UFOs went into high orbit. Project Plato was launched to receive the aliens and hold talks.

But before the aliens approaching in a huge UFO fleet landed, a different alien race contacted the U.S government and warned against the first group of aliens. But talks with the first group failed after they demanded nuclear disarmament and warned that humanity was on a path to self-destruction. They proposed instead to help humans to develop along a peaceful path to spiritual fulfillment.

Because the primary interest of the U.S. government at the time was signing a treaty that gives access to advanced alien technology, the Eisenhower administration rejected the overtures from the first alien group — the Nordic aliens — during the First Contact meeting at the Edwards Air Base and agreed to sign a treaty with the second group — the Greys — during a subsequent meeting at the Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico in 1954.

Elements of the sketchy account given by Cooper were allegedly confirmed independently by other whistle-blowers, including Charles Suggs, a former retired U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant, who claimed that his father, a senior naval officer, had attended the First Contact meeting with the Nordic aliens in February 1954.

John Lear, another independent whistle-blower, was a former air force pilot and the son of William Lear, who built the Lear Jet. Lear also confirmed that two alien races had been involved in the First Contact meetings.

Robert Dean, a former intelligence officer, described Nordic aliens as humanoids with Nordic features, and the Greys as tall humanoids up to 9 feet tall with pale white skin, large eyes, large head, and spindly limbs.

Greys allegedly originated from a star in the constellation of Orion. Other reports claimed they came from a planet in the star system Zeta Reticuli.

Details of the agreement with the Greys leaked by whistle-blowers include non-interference in human affairs in exchange for accommodation on Earth under conditions of secrecy. In return, they would furnish the U.S. government with advanced technology to help the country to stay ahead of enemy nations. The Greys also agreed they would not approach any other nation to make a treaty.

The Greys were housed in an underground facility in Dulce where Phil Schneider claimed he encountered them while working as a geological engineer employed by a private company contracted to build underground bases for the Greys.

Schneider revealed that part of the treaty agreement allowed the Greys to abduct a very limited number of humans for medical research and experiments. But the Greys proved untrustworthy and violated the agreement on abductions.

Most reports of UFO sightings and stories of abductions involved Greys freely violating the treaty with the government, according to UFO conspiracy theorists.

Little Green Men: A Look at the Official Soviet X-Files Investigation

It was 4:05 a.m. on Sept. 20, 1977. Something serious was happening over the skies of Petrozavodsk .

A group of dockworkers on the early shift that morning say they saw a blinding light emerge from the direction of Lake Onega in northwest Russia. As it approached Petrozavodsk, the light took on the appearance of a glimmering jellyfish, before slowing to a hover and unleashing a salvo of ultra-thin beams of light.

The dockworkers were left wondering what they had seen. Some were concerned they were witnessing a nuclear attack: This was, after all, the height of the Cold War.

But that did not explain what came next. After 12 puzzling minutes, the shining object transformed into a bright semicircle and jetted off back toward Lake Onega. Rather than disappearing over the horizon, it appeared to veer upward, before punching a burning red hole in the clouds, and disappearing into the abyss.

No one died, and the United States, it seemed, was not involved.

The Petrozavodsk jellyfish was not the first time a UFO had been spotted over the territory of the Soviet Union, but few sightings had ever been corroborated by so many people. Policemen, sailors, an ambulance crew and even a reporter for the TASS news agency all claimed to have seen the object. The TASS reporter filed his story three days later under the headline: "A strange natural phenomena over Karelia."

Neighboring governments became alarmed, suspecting the Soviets had tested a new type of weapon. They demanded an explanation from Moscow, but Soviet leaders were apparently just as baffled. Officials even turned to the Academy of Sciences — the highest collection of scientific minds in the communist bloc — for an explanation. The Academy had no satisfactory answer, concluding that the UFO was a real physical phenomenon that required further study.

As Soviet UFO enthusiasts began promoting their own interpretations, the Kremlin convened an unprecedented meeting of military and scientific experts. They all agreed the UFO issue was too big to ignore, and resolved to launch a state investigation into the phenomenon.

Managed by the Defense Ministry and Academy of Sciences, the secret investigation began in 1978 and would run to the end of the Soviet era.

The Network

The secret Soviet X-files investigation came to be known in government circles as The Network, and was the largest official investigation into the UFO phenomenon ever conducted. For 13 years, The Network was tasked not with the simple collection of UFO reports — this was left to amateurs — but with understanding them scientifically.

The man tapped to lead the project was a young astrophysicist named Yuly Platov. Now in his 80s, Platov told The Moscow Times that he found out about the project in conversation with the head of his institute. He realized it would be an opportunity to flex his scientific muscles, and so pressed his boss to be given the chance to take part. A few days later he was contacted, quite unexpectedly, and put in charge of the entire project.

Initially the work was top secret. "Maybe we would really find aliens or maybe our findings would have military applications," Platov says. "It wasn't clear at the start what we might find."

The Network was made up of 20 organizations staffed by specialists in physics, chemistry, optics and spectroscopy. "So many people from different professions had to be united," Platov says. "I was the one who had to unite them, and that was difficult, especially for someone like me."

The astrophysicist also had to coordinate his efforts with a parallel structure in the Defense Ministry, which was not without cultural difficulties. "If a scientist is faced with something he doesn't understand, he tries to explore and study the phenomenon," Platov said. "But if something isn't clear for the military, then it is a possible target, or a potential enemy."

The Network gathered data from two main sources. The Academy of Sciences provided reports submitted by Soviet citizens or scientific institutes. The Defense Ministry collected data from soldiers serving in the Soviet military, who were required to report any strange phenomena, especially if it interfered with hardware.

Over the course of its existence, The Network would receive some 3,000 reports of UFO sightings. In the beginning, things were more difficult, and Platov's team instead relied on the research of independent UFO enthusiasts. King among such enthusiasts was an astronomer by the name of Felix Zigel, considered by many followers to be the founding father of Russian UFO studies.

Zigel was obsessive in collecting witness reports over the years, but all of it was unverified. Platov's organization got to work checking the data. Occasionally, a fresh report would prove intriguing enough to persuade Platov and his team to go into the field to investigate.

Platov recalls several fruitless trips to verify Zigel's UFO sightings. The first report came from a 10-year-old boy named Nikita, who claimed to have witnessed a UFO taking off from a field in suburban Moscow. However, when Platov arrived at the Nikita's apartment to ask questions, the boy began to sob uncontrollably. "He looked at his uncle, all doe-eyed, and admitted making it all up," says Platov.

On another outing, Platov's research ream joined Zigel's amateur investigators on a field trip. "Zigel was the chief, the big boss for these guys," Platov says. "Pity he wasn't much of a scientist."

Zigel's research methods were certainly unorthodox. According to Platov, the UFO researcher asked a female colleague to walk around the scene of a reported UFO landing, telling her to stand in various locations and say if she felt strange energy. "Wherever he put her, she'd say 'no,' but he wouldn't give up," says Platov. "Finally, she said she felt something, and he was satisfied."

The team from the academy watched the experiment with detached amusement. After a while, one of them called out to Zigel and joked that he should blindfold her to improve accuracy. The enthusiast was not amused. It was the last time Zigel's organization cooperated with The Network. "When he realized that we weren't obsessed by looking for little green men, he drifted away," says Platov.

While Platov and his team plugged away at their investigation, Zigel continued his own search for the truth until his death in 1988. He built his own parallel team of scientists and amateurs to investigate what he believed to be a genuine paranormal or alien phenomenon. He also cultivated close ties with Western ufologists, who began publishing his case books.

After his death, Zigel's legacy was continued by several disciples from the original research group. They continue working to this day, and chief among them is Alexander Semyonov, who leads a group called Ecology of the Unknown.

Like his mentor, Semyonov is a true believer. Like other Russian UFO enthusiasts, he believes UFOs explain much of the technological superiority of the United States over Russia. B-2 stealth bombers and iPhones are the direct result of the Pentagon being more in tune with UFOs than the Russian Defense Ministry, they say.

Joseph Kellner, an academic specializing in the Russian UFO movement, describes the efforts of these amateur investigators as "romantic," and borne out of a "suspicion of the academic mainstream."

Much of what they base their understanding of UFOs on was imported from Western UFO mythology, says Daniel Galaydow, the official UFO correspondent for the Vechernyaya Moskva newspaper. He is skeptical of many reports from the 1990s, suspicious that jobless military and intelligence officers were creating stories to conform to Western UFO traditions, and then selling them to foreign UFO researchers.

Yet Galaydow remains insistent that UFOs are a reality, and says the best evidence of this comes from the late Soviet period. He speaks of sources in the military-industrial community showing him evidence of a flying saucer crash in Vladivostok in 1986, with the remains supposedly recovered by the Soviet military.

"I don't know whether or not Russian science has research centers that can reverse engineer captured UFOs and interrogate their alien crews to understand their technology," Galaydow says. "Though, I suppose, if we had alien technology, our government would have already used it in this new standoff with the United States."

One Last Puzzle

When it made its conclusions in 1990, the official results of The Network's 13-year inquiry into UFOs concluded that there was no substantive evidence of alien visitation. Just 300 of the 3,000 or so cases they investigated from 1978 to 1990 were considered legitimately anomalous. The other 90 percent were easily explained by man-made activity: usually involving aerospace technology, such as rocket launches and light reflecting off the cylindrical and triangle shaped weather balloons used by research institutes around the world.

While true believers hang on to those 300 reports, they now generally accept that rocket launches were often misreported as alien activity. The Petrozavodsk jellyfish was no exception.

As soon as the Western press began reporting the Petrozavodsk event, it caught the attention of a young engineer half a world away. Dr. James Oberg was a mission controller at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. As a keen observer of Russian spaceflight, he thought he knew what was going on over Petrozavodsk.

Oberg telephoned NASA's satellite tracking center to check whether the Soviets launched something from the top-secret cosmodrome in nearby Plesetsk. The response he received was interesting. There had been a launch at 3:58 a.m. on Sept. 20, he was told, just minutes before the Petrozavodsk UFO was sighted. It appears that the rigid compartmentalization of information in the Soviet Union prevented anyone in Russia from connecting the dots sooner.

Over the years, Oberg made a name for himself as a debunker of Soviet UFO reports, showing time and time again how UFO sightings corresponded with recorded launches of secret space hardware.

The re-entry of a SpaceX Falcon 9 booster in 2015. The rocket is firing its engine, creating an unusual visual pattern comparable to the one described by Soviet citizens in 1967.

One famous incident from nearly 50 years ago, however, remained stubbornly unexplainable.

On the evening of July 17, 1967, Soviet citizens from Ukraine to the Caucasus reported seeing a crescent-shaped object, accompanied by a dot of light, streaking across the night sky. Similar reports over the same regions surfaced on Sept. 19 and Oct. 18, and continued through the spring of 1968.

This incident was Zigel's big break, with his reports shooting him to prominence. On prime time television, he urged Soviet citizens to report sightings of strange phenomenon. His reports were translated for NASA and drew considerable attention from engineers and Western spy agencies.

But Oberg believes people were seeing something different that day. Something perhaps no less terrifying.

It was "the greatest UFO cover-up in history." Rather than alien landings, Oberg says, Soviet citizens had witnessed a test of a top-secret space weapon known as the Fractional Orbital Bombardment System (FOBS). Able to orbit the earth until Moscow told it which city to target, FOBS could then re-enter the atmosphere and maneuver to its target.

Oberg says this would have looked like an orange crescent — flames from the engine forming a bow-like wake as FOBS slid backwards into the atmosphere — accompanied by a bright dot representing the spacecraft itself.

Soviet authorities later acknowledged that a weapon matching the description of the FOBS existed, but there was no visual reference with which to compare it. This re-entry maneuver was unique in the history of space travel.

Until last year, that is.

Oberg was watching a livestream of the re-entry and landing of a SpaceX Falcon 9 booster when something clicked. The Falcon 9 was conducting that same unusual maneuver that Soviet FOBS weapons were understood to have made in 1967. And photos of the re-entry clearly showed an orange crescent accompanied by a bright dot.

And with that, Oberg says, the Soviet X-Files can finally be considered closed.

"The most amusing thing is that then I finally understood why the American spy agencies wanted to study UFO reports," he says. "It wasn't, as Western UFO enthusiasts thought, because the UFOs were from another planet, but just the opposite."

Unknown Object Appears Over Russia:

An unsubstantiated UFO case comes to us from Russia. According to the reports, not far from the city of Prohlandnyi at 1:00 AM, on August 10, 1989, Soviet military radar units picked up an unidentified flying object. An attempt was made to contact the craft, without success. The UFO was classified as "hostile." Russian defenses were put on alert, and Mig-25s were put in the air to find and identify the UFO.

A Russian Roswell?:

The Migs were given the authority to use weapons if necessary. When the UFO refused to answer hails, the Migs fired, hitting the UFO. It soon ditched over the Caucasian Mountains, and a search and retrieval team was dispatched. A crew aboard an M1-8 located the disc-shaped UFO outside of Nizhnizy Chegem. The area was completely cordoned off to everyone except military personnel. The case has a similar ring to America's Roswell crash of 1947.

But an atypical year is coming very soon if Calvin astronomy professor Larry Molnar’s calculations are correct. Molnar is predicting that a star he is monitoring will explode between 2018 and 2020; a comparable prediction has never been made.

“It’s a one-in-a-million chance that you can predict an explosion,” Molnar said of his bold prognostication. “It’s never been done before.”

The star known as KIC 9832227 came to Molnar’s attention in 2013. He was attending an astronomy conference when astronomer Karen Kinemuchi presented her study of the brightness changes of the star, which concluded with a question: Is it pulsing or is it a binary (two stars orbiting each other)?

Also present at the conference was then-student Daniel Van Noord ’14, Molnar’s research assistant. He took the question as a personal challenge and made some observations of the star with the Calvin observatory.

“He looked at how the color of the star correlated with brightness and determined it was definitely binary,” said Molnar. “In fact, he discovered it was actually a contact binary, in which the two stars share a common atmosphere, like two peanuts sharing a single shell.

“From there Dan figured out the orbital period from Kinemuchi’s data and was surprised to discover that the period was not the same as earlier data showed; it was getting shorter,” Molnar continued.

FURTHER EXPLORATION

Based on that discovery, Molnar and Van Noord wanted to explore further, so they continued to monitor the orbital period using the Calvin observatory. “We found the period getting even shorter at a faster rate,” said Molnar. They surmised that they might be seeing the merger of two stars, a process that can culminate in a kind of stellar explosion known as a Red Nova.

Nobody has ever predicted a nova explosion before. It’s been done at Calvin with a small telescope, one professor and a few students looking for something that is not likely.

“It was really exciting to find something like this,” said Van Noord, who came to Calvin because of his interest in studying variable stars. While here he developed a now-internationally used computer program that discovers binary stars in archived data. “It’s proof that the method of research we use at Calvin works.”

The team also took cues from an article by astronomer Romuald Tylenda, who had studied the observational archives to see how another star (V1309 Scorpii) had behaved before it exploded unexpectedly and produced a red nova in 2008. The pre-explosion record of that star is the “Rosetta stone” that Molnar is using to interpret the new data.

“I remember thinking that if I ever see one [a trajectory] that looks like that, I better pay close attention,” said Molnar.

THE NEXT STEP

While the new star seemed to be following Tylenda’s model, other models and explanations had to be eliminated. This next step of research was taken by Calvin student Cara Alexander.

“We had to rule out the possibility of a third star,” said Alexander. “That would have been a pedestrian, boring explanation. I was processing data from two telescopes and obtained images that showed a signature of our star and no sign of a third star. Then we knew we were looking at the right thing.

“It took most of the summer to analyze the data, but it was so exciting. To be a part of this research, I don’t know any other place where I would get an opportunity like that; Calvin is an amazing place.”

Jason Smolinski, a Calvin professor collaborating on the project, said the research will produce results such that astronomers have never had before. “Any time stellar explosions are seen, it’s always after the fact,” he said. “That’s interesting, but you always wonder what was there beforehand? For us to be able to study this type of merger in great detail across the entire spectrum is remarkable,” he said.

Being a Christian astronomer gives you so much more wonder, it gives you so much more appreciation knowing that it was handcrafted–it was made by the hand of God.

And Molnar is convinced Calvin is exactly the right place for a discovery of this magnitude.

“Most big scientific projects are done in enormous groups with thousands of people and billions of dollars,” he said. “This project is just the opposite. It’s been done using a small telescope, with one professor and a few students looking for something that is not likely.

“Nobody has ever predicted a nova explosion before. Why pay someone to do something that almost certainly won’t succeed? It’s a high-risk proposal. But at Calvin it’s only my risk, and I can use my work on interesting, open-ended questions to bring extra excitement into my classroom. Some projects still have an advantage when you don’t have as much time or money.”

“Being at Calvin gives you the freedom to explore,” added Alexander. “At large institutions you often study what you can get grants for instead of what needs to be studied.”

And it makes you more awestruck.

LUMINOUS SHEDS LIGHT ON RED NOVA RESEARCH

While Larry Molnar’s discovery is rare and atypical, the opportunity to document the finding along the way is an exceptional opportunity in its own right.

That’s why Sam Smartt, Calvin professor of communication arts and sciences, agreed to partner with Molnar to chronicle the process.

“I felt like it was a little gem of story here in our backyard,” said Smartt, who is a documentary film producer.

Smartt and others in his film production crew, including Kemp Lyons, Calvin’s video producer, and student Daniel Baas, have logged about 60 hours of filming. Smartt’s Intermediate Filmmaking class helped in the production of a trailer and a few short films this fall.

“I felt like we had to jump on it right away during the period of uncertainty—will it or won’t it explode?” said Smartt. “That’s what makes it interesting.”

The full documentary, which will continue to chronicle the research, will likely be finished a few years after the predicted explosion.

Luminous will focus on the nature of scientific discovery, the development of undergraduate researchers and the power of “small science.”

“Big science is multimillion dollar funding with a lot of people working on big projects,” said Smartt. “Small science is a small telescope with just a few people looking at one thing for a very long time. You wouldn’t think that a small liberal arts college with no graduate students and only an astronomy minor would have a story like this. It’s kind of an underdog story.”

SO MUCH WONDER

“Being a Christian astronomer gives you so much more wonder,” she said. “It gives you so much more appreciation knowing that it was handcrafted—it was made by the hand of God. Secular institutions take the appreciation of the glory out of it. From the huge vastness to the tiniest of details, Calvin professors help you see it. They help you see God through it.”

With the star still following the model, Molnar is predicting the explosion will occur in about three to five years, at which time the star will increase its brightness ten thousand fold.

“If Larry’s prediction is correct, his project will demonstrate for the first time that astronomers can catch certain binary stars in the act of dying, and that they can track the last few years of a stellar death spiral up to the point of final, dramatic explosion,” said Matt Walhout, chair of Calvin’s physics and astronomy department.

Knowing God better is one of the things we seek to do.

“The project is significant not only because of the scientific results, but also because it is likely to capture the imagination of people on the street,” he added. “If the prediction is correct, then for the first time in history, parents will be able to point to a dark spot in the sky and say, ‘Watch, kids, there’s a star hiding in there, but soon it’s going to light up.’”

Indeed, the explosion will catch the attention of scientists, media and ordinary people across the globe.

The outcome, one of the brighter stars in the heavens for a time, will be visible as part of the constellation Cygnus, and will add a star to the recognizable Northern Cross star pattern.

Molnar, who is now as certain of his prediction as science allows, believes whatever happens, “the answer will be interesting.”

“Knowing God better is one of the things we seek to do,” he said. “One of the ways to do that is to explore this amazing universe. The Psalmist says, ‘the heavens declare the glory of God,’” said Molnar. “If you’re not listening you’re missing that message.”

ET hunters expand search for life to include 20,000 star systems thought to contain two-sided worlds split between constant darkness and permanent sunshine

The SETI Institute has claimed intelligent alien civilisations could survive on strange "heaven and hell" planets once thought to be totally uninhabitable.

Extraterrestrial hunters have expanded their search for life to include 20,000 red dwarf stars - the dim suns which are thought to create these weird worlds.

Red dwarfs have a much smaller "habitable zone" than our own sun, which means any planet capable of supporting life would have to orbit it at very close proximity.

These planets quickly become "tidally locked" so that one hemisphere constantly faces the star, leaving one side of the world to shiver in constant, freezing darkness whilst the other is scorched by permanent sunlight.

It was thought both sides of these grim planets would be too hostile for life to survive.

But recent research has indicated that a temperate area known as a Goldilocks zone could form between the two faces, allowing intelligent organisms to thrive.

"If these worlds have oceans and atmospheres, heat would be transported from the lit side to the dark, and a significant fraction of the planet would be habitable," the SETI Institute wrote .

Due to the strange properties of these planets, ET detectives have tended to ignore red dwarves.

Yet they have several key properties which make them very exciting to alien hunters.

Up to half of all red dwarf stars are thought to host an planet in the "habitable zone" in which life could thrive.

It is also believed that every single red dwarf which has ever been born is still shining, because their lifespan is longer than the entire universe has been in existence.

Red dwarfs burn for much longer than stars like our own sun, giving intelligent life more time to evolve.

“This may be one instance in which older is better,” said SETI Institute astronomerSeth Shostak .

The SETI Institute will now use the Allen Telescope Array to look at 20,000 red dwarf stars over the next two years and search for "magic frequencies", which are the radio transmissions likely to be sent out by aliens.

“Red dwarfs – the dim bulbs of the cosmos – have received scant attention by SETI scientists in the past,” added SETI engineer Jon Richards .

"That’s because researchers made the seemingly reasonable assumption that other intelligent species would be on planets orbiting stars similar to the Sun."

Arizona Lights

Phoenix — I have attached  photos that I took last April. I don’t know if the lights are individual beings, ships or whatever. It could be the lights of a very large mother ship.

First there were three lights and then there were four. It was as if they knew that I would point at them and they were posing for me. I took a hundred photos, but only one had this phenomenon. Thanks to MUFON CMS

California Lights

Costa Mesa — Sitting in my hot tub at 9:45 pm, on March 26, 2016,
I saw the glow of a V shaped object. One light was at the tip with the other two close to each other in rear of the V. It was odd and dim with no flashing lights or front directional lights for traffic. As it past, I lost sight of it. I was blown away as it was like the Phoenix LIGHTS AGAIN in California. Colorado Disc

Parker — My teenage son took this photo on his way home last year on April 19, 2016. We live on a dirt road away from city lights. I am not sure of the exact date, but he ran in the house and showed me the photo. At first, I told him it was a plane. Then I thought drone, but I have looked at photos of drones and cannot find one to match.

I enlarged the photo as best I could to see any details. It looks like there are large light panels on it and it was too low to be a satellite? Thanks to MUFON CMS

Port Saint Lucien – On March 5, 2016, I was walking my dogs in the parks of Tradition Square on a beautiful sunny afternoon. I noticed a big black cloud near the sun that was a very interesting site. I stopped to take a picture with my phone, and noticed what appeared to be a glowing sphere with some type of triangle shape inside the glowing sphere. Some spotlights were attached to the corners of the geometric object. This unidentified object was not moving at all and while positioning my phone to take another picture this object was gone!

I feel like during and after this experience, I had lost track of time. Maybe as if, I am in a different time zone, or living a “timeless” life. I feel that it was not a coincidence; I feel this object was of a higher intelligent order and it wanted to be seen. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Indiana Cylinder

Greenwood – I was in the back seat of a car on our way home on March 29, 2016. I was just looking out the window and saw what at first I thought it was an airplane. When the car came to a stop and noticed it wasn’t moving and had no wings.

It was cigar shaped and was white and stood still. At first I wasn’t worried but then I was very interested when I saw what it really was. I stopped watching it. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Kansas Disc

Canton — My friend and I had gone to the Maxwell Wildlife Preserve to see their Buffalo herd on March 19, 2016. As we rode around the site in an open trailer observing buffalo, I took a number of pictures with my Nikon D40 digital camera (ISO 200). In the center of the sky picture is an opaque object that appears to be partially shaded from the sun. The object was NOT visible to the naked eye. I’m a MUFON Field Investigator (#19371) so I submitted it to Dr. Bruce Maccabee, photo analyst for MUFON, and requested his analysis. In response, he wrote, “Looks as if it might be an opaque object with a glint (reflection) from the right side. Difference in brightness of the glint as compared to the dark (not illuminated by the sun) left side seems too great to be a reflection from a bird. Unfortunately, the image is too “diffuse” to get an idea of the exact shape. Can’t do much with “surprise” image reports such as this because no info on flight dynamics. South Hadley — Driving towards the Village Commons in on March 29, 2016, my friend and I could see two bright lights in the sky. They were just sitting in the same spot for a very long time. We could see them about a half a mile away. It looked as though the UFO was now over us and the two lights turned into three very bright lights. I could see the three very bright lights in a triangle shape. It looked very low and gigantic. It started to move very fast and get far away. New Jersey Craft

Little Egg Harbor — My husband and myself were sleeping in our bedroom. I woke up and saw this creature standing next to my husband. it was dark with just enough light coming in so i could see it. I immediately knew it was not something human. The first thing that came to my mind was it was an alien. The creature was about 4 foot tall and I could only see it’s head because it was standing on the other side of the bed next to my husband’s head. It had a large head, large eyes and i believe it was grey in color. It did not move at all just stood there. I sat up and tried to warn my husband to get away from it. I tried to shake him and tried to yell.  I couldn’t move, couldn’t speak. Then there was a bright light outside, the whole area was lit up like daylight, and my husband was outside, floating limply, up into the sky.  He looked like he was still sleeping.  I really don’t know how long he was gone. I’m assuming it put me back to sleep because i have no memory of what happened next until I woke u p later in the night and my husband was there sleeping again. I was really scared and crying. I woke him up and he had no memory of this.

A couple of weeks later, he woke up with this wound on his arm in the morning. He saw it on his arm when he looked in the bathroom mirror when he first got up and he showed it to me. He said there was no pain.  It was not there when he went to sleep the night before. I took a picture of it right away. As you can see it’s a row of puncture wounds. He does not have any memory of this happening to him either.  I was telling this to a friend of ours and he suggested I tell you.  So here I am. Thanks to MUFON CMS

New York — It slowly hummed over head going into a shadow of darkness on August 26, 2016. It was definitely not ours and we have never been alone. Lets not rise to the debunkers they are not worth the effort as aliens are real.

Rhode Island Orb

Portsmouth — I borrowed my friend’s Cannon DLSR to take pictures of the dark clouds moving in shortly after alerts of a violent storm approaching on March 17, 2016. I took a picture of the shoreline, clearly showing a brick building. I looked away from the camera and noticed a hovering dot at about 60 degrees off the horizon, northwest of the previous picture. I aimed the camera at the object using a 70-300mm lens. I zoomed in and still could only see a dot, so I snapped the picture. All a sudden before I could take another, it flew at a high rate of speed in a southwest direction. I used the camera to zoom in on the dot of light that looked like a boat in the sky with dots of light around it. Thanks to MUFON CMS

El Paso — Myself and some friends were four wheeling in the Oro Grande Mountains near the military site on March 1, 2016. Once we reached the top of the mountain I took several pictures and didn’t realize I had captured this UFO until later on at night.

We did not see anything in the sky or hear anything.

It was dead silent when I took the pictures. I just happen to take this one pic at just the right time. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Virginia Triangle

Alexandria — On March 26, 2016- I was exiting the Huntington Metro Garage when I glanced up and saw a strange silver/grey object hovering off in the distance. I could not tell its exact size but it was large and stationary. The top of the object was reflecting sunlight or radiated its own light. As I was watching the item, a couple came up to me and said, “They had first spotted the object form the metro train as they came into Eisenhower station. The wife stated that her husband did not see any type of tether and ask me did I see one. I saw the attachment just under its “nose”. It was slightly curve and reddish in color. I took out my cell phone and took a couple of pictures. I then drove five minutes towards Huntington Park, but lost sight of the object. The pictures are nice and clear but the object too far away for the phone to get a better picture. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Wisconsin Light

Dresser — I was heading northeast on County Road F towards three miles from Trollhaugen Ski Resort. I stopped to take pictures in the past of the landscape and in the photos; you can see white balls of light. I am drawn to these places and very nervous about them. It was around 9 pm, towards the end of summer.

I had just gotten off from work and was heading out to pick up my children from my parent’s home. I had never before seen lights, crafts, or anything strange before this. But, I have always dedicated enormous amounts of time into learning about strange phenomena.

I live right next to a small local airport so I see and hear all sorts of aircraft all day. The sighting was about 10 miles away from my home and the airport.

As I was coming up a small hill on County Road F, and I noticed a big orange ball shape about 300 feet above the tree line. I was instantly scared and started to shake. I tried so hard not to look. As I drove closer to where it was and saw an orange ball of light split, and now there were three of the same size glowing orange lights. I watched in my review mirror as I drove past the lights still scared. I stopped the car, rolled down my window and tried to take a picture of the red light but it was not showing up. Brazil Light

Braganca Paulista –It was a Tuesday, the end of Carnival, around 23 pm, on February 9, 2016. I was resting in the hotel room balcony (Hotel Villa St. Augustine – in Braganca Paulista) when I noticed a very bright object, which initially I thought was a plane that it was more than 1 hour in the same region of the sky. I took pictures and recorded video, which was what I could do, but to this day I do not know what I saw.

Belwood Ontario — My daughters were at a sleepover on March 16, 2016, break at my parents house. I had the flu so I decided to sleep in my eldest daughters bed so as not to get my partner sick. I had the blinds open to let the moonlight in and had noticed at about 11:15pm what I thought was an airplane flashing through the sky through the branches of a tree in our yard. It was a very clear night so I watched it for about a minute and thought it was flashing strangely but that I was probably just seeing it weirdly through the branches. I rolled over to go to sleep but after about 30 minutes l didn’t sleep, rolled back over. The bright flashing light was still there and I knew that if it was an airplane or a satellite it would have moved to another position in the sky or passed out of view by now. I got out of bed and grabbed my phone which was charging. I started to film. You can see the street light in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, then I zoom in on the light. I steadied the phone on the window sill and once I zoomed in on the light it began to move around until my phone suddenly died. I bent down to plug my phone in to continue charging but when I looked back up the light was gone. I have seen this exact light once before in my life when I was a girl, back in the late 90’s my mum, dad, sister & I were watching a huge meteor shower in our backyard in St. George and when the meteor shower drew to a close, a light exactly like this hovered high above our house did the exact same movements.

The night I filmed these lights my eldest daughter and her best friend saw several bright balls of light in their bedroom at my mother’s house. None of us felt scared or reacted in any way other than wonder. We aren’t into paranormal stuff and don’t know a ton of stuff about UFO’s. We just know that we see weird lights and weird stuff happens around us sometimes. We haven’t felt well lately. Both my daughters are on wait lists for ENT’s (ear nose & throat specialists) at McMaster Hospital. I am on a wait list for an allergist. We all have upper respiratory infections and chronic sinusitis, my eldest daughter has nosebleeds and has woken up with bruising and blood on the palate of her mouth. My youngest daughter has a weird triangular mark on her shoulder and I have a weird scar on my right calf. There are other odd health things too but that’s probably enough for now. I can provide medical documentation and photos of everything. I would just like to know if there’s something going on here?

La Vega – This is a picture I’ve seen since childhood in many places in my city, is an old photograph as 1940, something like that, there an odd shaped object.

I find it curious, it can be anything, but at that time, people did not think of spaceships and stuff like that, I do not think it is a montage; people see that picture and do not notice that there is something there that who knows what it will be.

Cajarc — I was taking pictures of French mountains with a friend, using long exposure time, when I saw a strange light among the clouds. I first thought it was the moon, but then I remembered it was a day of the new moon. Besides, it was moving slowly, back and forth laterally. I was fascinated, so I took a picture. It is a 10 seconds exposure so the object is blurry because of its motion. The light around it looked unreal, as if it was a very powerful. That is why I thought it was an UFO. My friend was amazed too. Gradually, the light became dimmer, and the object vanished in the dark in a few seconds. Thanks to MUFON CMS

'Laser Cloak' Could Hide Earth from Evil Aliens

A simple laser beam could disrupt aliens' observations of Earth, making it look like there's nobody home on the third rock from the sun, a new study suggests.

David Kipping, an astronomer at Columbia University in New York, said he first considered this idea when he heard about the strangely dimming star that was detected recently by NASA's Kepler space telescope. Researchers speculated the signal could have come from an "alien megastructure" orbiting the star.

That's a remote possibility, many scientists stressed; the star's strange signal likely has a natural cause. But the Kepler observations got Kipping thinking about ways humanity could alter the signals it sends into space — or hide them altogether from life-hunting aliens, who may have malicious intentions. He and Columbia graduate student Alex Teachey concluded that it would be surprisingly easy to wipe out Earth's signal, distort it to look strange or even edit out the fingerprint of life — provided researchers knew the location of the snooping aliens.

"We essentially played the thought experiment that if we really had xenophobic tendencies and wanted to avoid the Earth being discovered (as Stephen Hawking and others have been warning about), could we hide the Earth from alien planet-hunters?" Kipping said in an email.

How to build a cloaking device

The key to Kipping and Teachey's thinking lies in the way humans have identified most planets around other stars, a process called the transit method. This strategy, which has most famously been employed by the Kepler spacecraft, detects tiny dips in the brightness of stars, which can indicate an orbiting planet.

The transit method could theoretically be used by alien civilizations to detect Earth, too. But there's a way to trip up such extraterrestrial searches, Kipping and Teachey said.

"To make it look like the planet is not there at all, you've got to get rid of that dip. You've got to fill in the missing starlight," Teachey said in an explanatory video. 

Engineers could shine a very bright laser or collection of lasers toward a star suspected of hosting intelligent aliens during the time Earth was passing in front of the sun from the other planet's  perspective. Then, aliens making measurements wouldn't see any change in solar brightness.

"I started to think about lasers," Kipping told Space.com. "Most people might have stopped there, because the sun emits so much light — how could you possibly produce a laser beam which could ever compete with the sun? But it turns out, when you actually run through the equations, it's really not that bad." [How to Discover an Alien Planet (Video)]

"We could build this next week if we wanted to," Teachey added.

To alter Earth's signature as seen by an alien version of Kepler, a laser system would have to emit 30 megawatts of power for about 10 hours per year, coinciding with Earth's passing in front of the sun, the duo calculated.

That equates to significantly less than the energy the International Space Station gathers in a year with its solar panels, Kipping said, or the energy used by about 70 homes over the course of a year. Such a laser system, either on Earth or in orbit, could charge its solar-powered batteries for most of the year and then release the high-powered blasts at just the right time, brightening when the sun's light would normally dim.

While a laser of that intensity hasn't been built before, the researchers said, such a cloaking system could also use multiple smaller lasers, all shining in the same direction. The alien star would be so distant that such a difference would be indistinguishable. Laser beams are tightly focused, but at greater distances, the beams will have grown large enough to require less precise aim.

By varying the wavelength and strength of the beams, humans could conceal Earth from more complicated detectors. Such a "cloak" that concealed all wavelengths would take about 250 megawatts of power, with lasers blasting at different wavelengths, the researchers said. The laser strategy could also alter Earth's signature to look like almost anything, even something that appears distinctive and artificial, the scientists said, like the New York skyline or a featureless box.

But perhaps the most interesting use, the researchers said, would be as a "bio-cloak," which would actually use less power than would be required to totally conceal the planet. When a planet crosses its star's face, a little bit of light passes through the planet's atmosphere, and researchers can determine the atmosphere's makeup based on the wavelengths of that light. By sending laser beams that are the inverse of certain wavelengths, humanity could conceivably edit out the life-generated "biosignatures" in Earth's atmosphere, Kipping said.

"We can actually cancel those features out, such as oxygen," he said. "The alien civilization is going to detect your planetary transit. They're going to detect your planetary radial velocity, but then when they 'smell' the atmosphere, it would not look like a tasty planet. It would just look like a dead world."

While a planet that was fully cloaked could still be detected by other means, such as by the gravitational pull it exerts on its star, this kind of cloak would arouse less suspicion, because the planet would be there as expected, just without signs of life.

"We feel like this is the most deceptive cybercloaking you could possibly do, because then everything adds up — there's no missing piece to the puzzle," Kipping said. "And that would be a very difficult cloak to see." [10 Exoplanets That Could Host Alien Life]

Kipping and Teachey laid out their thinking in a study published Thursday (March 31) in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Many possibilities

Concealing Earth's existence from extraterrestrials, or announcing its presence with an artificial light curve, would work only if humanity knew or suspected where those aliens were living. But the concept is still intriguing as scientists look out to read other stars' light signatures and speculate about alien astronomers reading signals from Earth.

Kipping and Teachey suggested that alien civilizations could communicate with each other during transits by varying their light signatures, because individuals investigating a planet are likely to watch it as it passes in front of its star. Alien lasers could even encode information to transmit, the researchers said.

One possible next step, they added, would be to look more carefully through archival Kepler data to search for artificial signatures.

Jason Wright, an astronomer from Pennsylvania State University, recently published a paper about how scientists could identify advanced civilizations around other stars. "Alien megastructures" would dim stars more than expected, whereas lasers would tend to brighten them, but "we should look for both," Wright told Space.com.

"The fact that Kepler looked at 100,000 stars and didn't see much of anything along those lines suggests that that is pretty rare in the galaxy," Wright added. "And we should look more closely to see if there are things that aren't totally obvious."

In terms of this particular technology on Earth, "The only time it'd be useful for us is if we had some knowledge of alien civilizations along the thin strip of the sky that would see Earth transit the sun," he said.

Avi Loeb, who chairs the astronomy department at Harvard University in Massachusetts, told Space.com that the laser-cloaking method assumes researchers know where to look, that aliens aren't observing from moving spaceships and that putative extraterrestrial observers are mainly investigating planets by looking for transits across stars.

Energy demands would quickly grow as a civilization tried to hide from, or signal to, an increasing number of star systems, Loeb added. But the laser cloak is still an interesting new idea to add to the arsenal in the search for extraterrestrial life, he said.

"If there is a literature of ideas like this one, ideas that people proposed for potential signals that are artificial — the richer the literature is, the better it is," Loeb said. "The moment we find something artificial, it will change everything. It's good to have the imagination at work prior to seeing something unusual, so we are aware that there are possibilities beyond what we expect."

"I don't think anyone's thought of this particular application before," Wright said. "I think it just emphasizes how little energy is actually required to get someone's attention across the galaxy."

Weird, Oozing Super-Earth Planet Has Hot Nights, Even Hotter Days

The first super-Earth planet to get its photo taken may be superweird and superhot, and perhaps have super-runny lava in spots on its surface, researchers said.

Astronomers investigated the alien planet 55 Cancri e, the innermost of five known planets orbiting the star 55 Cancri, located about 41 light-years from Earth. This exoplanet is a super-Earth, a rocky world nearly twice Earth's width and eight times its mass. It's the first super-Earth from which astronomers have detected light.

Previous studies of 55 Cancri e suggested it might possess strange properties. Some work suggested the exoplanet was covered with oozing "supercritical fluids" — high-pressure, liquidlike, gas-like substances — while other research suggested the world was made largely of diamond.

To help solve the mysteries of 55 Cancri e, astronomers used NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope to monitor infrared emissions from the exoplanet for 75 hours total during the summer of 2013. The resulting thermal map revealed a strong difference in temperature between the planet's dayside and nightside.

55 Cancri e is tidally locked, meaning it always keeps the same face pointed at its star. On the dayside, temperatures on 55 Cancri e can reach about 4,400 degrees Fahrenheit (2,427 degrees Celsius). On the nightside, temperatures can dip to about 2,025 degrees F (1,107 degrees C). The nightside may be kept warm by heat conducting through the rock from the dayside, said study lead author Brice-Olivier Demory, an astrophysicist at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England.

The nightside's relatively cooler temperatures suggest that 55 Cancri e does not possess a thick atmosphere that could carry heat from the dayside to the night side, Demory said. It also suggests this planet is not covered with a large envelope of water, ruling out the possibility that supercritical fluids envelop 55 Cancri e, Demory added.

About halfway between the dayside and the nightside, the researchers discovered that 55 Cancri e possesses a hotspot. They suggest this hotspot might be due to lava flows, and because the planet is hot, this lava may flow better than it does on Earth, behaving more like water does at room temperature and less like solid rock.

A potential alternative explanation for this hotspot is that 55 Cancri e may possess an atmosphere only on the dayside of the planet; on the night side, the atmosphere would freeze out, Demory said. It remains uncertain whether such an atmosphere, if it exists, would convey enough heat to explain this hotspot, he said.

"We are far from having a comprehensive picture of this exoplanet," Demory told Space.com. "It is likely that Hubble's successor, the James Webb Space Telescope, will help in our understanding of this surprising world." The scientists detailed their findings online March 30 in the journal Nature.

Using the Spitzer Space Telescope, astronomers have put together a temperature map of an extrasolar “super Earth.” Its nightside is over 1,000 degrees cooler than its (totally molten) dayside.

THE FORBIDDEN PLANET

If there’s a short list for extrasolar planets to visit, 55 Cancri e is definitely not going to be on it. It’s hot, hellish, and weird…really weird.

As our instruments become more sophisticated, we’re beginning to learn much more about distant alien planets than merely their size and mass. And the exoplanet catalogue is turning out to be an aquarium full of oddballs, indeed.

The most recent discovery involves 55 Cancri e, a “super Earth” in a system located some 40 light years away. The planet, also known as “Janssen,” is about twice the size of the Earth and eight times its mass; it completes an orbit every 18 hours, and—like the Moon—is tidally locked, always presenting the same face to its parent star (just as the Moon always presents the same side to Earth).

Now, using NASA’s infrared Spitzer Space Telescope, astronomers have managed to cobble together a thermal “map” of surface conditions on the planet. It’s a milestone achievement, because now we can put together a detailed census of what’s really out there.

THE TWO FACES OF JANSSEN

The planet turns out to have two faces—one “hot” and one “cold.” But these are relative terms, you understand. Because the nightside is 1100° C (2012° F), hotter than the melting point of many familiar metals; and the dayside is a whopping 2500° C (4532° F), which is…well, it’s just really hot.

Venus, the hottest planet in our solar system, and with a surface temperature of just 462° C (864° F), it seems positively arctic in comparison.

Astronomers think the dayside is an immense, molten ocean of magma; the nightside, in contrast, seems to be composed of cooled, solid lava. It’s a strange dichotomy, and even stranger because the dayside heat is not communicated to the nightside. The atmosphere, it seems, is being boiled off on the sunward hemisphere, but some remnant of it must cling to the nightside.

That’s consistent with a recent analysis of the planet’s atmosphere, which suggests it does have one, and that it’s mostly hydrogen and helium, infused with hydrogen cyanide (and other weird carbon species).

The bottom line is—55 Cancri e is one hell of a place, and it’s showing us just how bizarre these “super Earths” (which seem to be quite common) really are. Which makes you appreciate our plain, homely old “regular Earth” that much more.

4 Far-Out Space Hoaxes for April Fools’ Day

The elaborate stories behind a UFO, suspended gravity, and the end of the world.

In 1989, British police received frightened calls from people who said they’d seen a UFO flying through the sky. Officers were dispatched to a field outside London, where the craft had supposedly landed. When they arrived, the officers must have been shocked to find what looked like a flying saucer. As they approached it, a door opened, and a silver-clad figure emerged.

The police immediately fled (well, what would you do?) But, as you can probably guess based on the title of this article, the UFO wasn’t really from space.

The flying saucer was an almost unbelievably elaborate April Fools’ Day prank by Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, whose love of April 1 iswell-documented. (In 2011, he claimed that he bought Pluto to reinstate its status as a planet.)

The flying saucer was actually a hot air balloon shaped like a UFO that was supposed to land in London’s Hyde Park on April 1, but because of wind changes, had stopped in a field in Surrey the day before. Branson was on board, along with the silver-clad person who had startled the bobbies.

Here are more far-out April Fools’ Day pranks.

It’s the End of the World as We Know It

“Your worst fears that the world will end are confirmed by astronomers of Franklin Institute, Philadelphia,” announced radio station KYW  the day before April 1, 1940. “Scientists predict that the world will end at 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time tomorrow.”

Obviously, this wasn’t true. The announcement was a publicity stunt thought up by William Castellini, a PR agent for the Franklin Institute, who wanted to publicize an April 1 lecture titled “How Will the World End?” (Hence, the specificity of 3 p.m.)

The end-of-the-world broadcast “was relatively soon after the War of the Worlds panic,” says Alex Boese, curator of the Museum of Hoaxes. Although it’s clear that this broadcast upset many listeners—some of whom called newspapers or the police—Boese says it’s hard to know how many people believed that the world was really going to end.

“It might have maybe disturbed people, but how many people actually, really believed it is hard to know,” he says. There’s “always the temptation for the media to play it up as if thousands of people were terrified out of their minds, because that’d make a better story.”

Whether or not the prank fooled many people, Boese says Castellini “did definitely get fired.”

The Real Moon Landing Hoax

People have been saying that the moon landing was a hoax ever sinceApollo 11 made it there in 1969. To be clear, the 1969 moon landing was real—but the 1967 moon landing announced by a Swiss radio station was fake.

That year, on April Fools’ Day, all German-language Swiss radio stations were interrupted with an hour-long, breaking news story saying that U.S. astronauts had just landed on the moon. The announcement was met with excitement by Swiss residents and vacationing Americans.

“It was two years before they really did have a moon landing, so there was an element of credibility, believability to it,” Boese says. “The part about it that should have told people something was wrong was when they said that the moon capsule was going to take off and then be visible reentering the Earth’s atmosphere” that night.

“People who knew anything about traveling to the moon should know it takes longer than that to get back,” he says. But those who didn’t looked to the sky that night to try to spot the capsule flying back to Earth.

Where’d the Gravity Go?

This last hoax wasn’t just meant to fool people—it was intended to spoof a popular pseudo-scientific theory of the ‘70s.

In their best-selling book The Jupiter Effect, authors John Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann claimed that a 1982 planetary alignment wouldtrigger massive, cataclysmic earthquakes. This ludicrous theory upset many scientists—including astronomer Patrick Moore, who decided he’d make fun of Gribbin and Plagemann with an April Fools’ Day joke.

The morning of April 1, 1976, Moore announced on a BBC radio stationthat at 9:47 am, Pluto would pass behind Jupiter, creating the Jovian-Plutonian Gravitational Effect. These planets would pull at the Earth, temporarily decreasing its gravity. Moore instructed his audience that if they jumped into the air at exactly 9:47, they’d be able to feel it.

When the time came, Moore instructed his listeners to “Jump, now!” Afterwards, many listeners called in to report that they’d floated.

That’s one small step for parody, one giant leap for gullibility.

Rectangle UFO noticed over Georgia as it blocked the stars

A Georgia witness at Cumming recalled a UFO event from 2013 where a black, rectangular-shaped object was seen flying low and blocking out the stars, according to testimony in Case 75213 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was outside talking on a cell phone about 2:15 a.m. on November 4, 2013, on a clear night with good weather when something unusual was noticed in the night sky.

“I noticed first off – the fact I could not see any stars in an area,” the witness stated.“The fact I could see some stars, but in an area I could not see any – it did not seem right at all.”

The witness was puzzled as to why some of the sky was blocked from seeing the stars.

“I did not think at that moment I was looking at anything. I kept looking and then realized when the end of this ‘area’ was, then allowing me to see the stars. At that moment I realized something was in front of me and it was large. I could then see the size due to the area I could not see.”

At this point, the witness was very close to the object.

“It was black but not shiny, but not a dull surface. It was approximately three stories tall, approximately 300 feet long, and approximately 75 feet wide. It traveled from north to south. I saw the entire west side of the craft. I did not see the front at all. I could see part of the back end, but limited due to the dark color craft at night time.”

The witness was able to see lights on the bottom of the craft.

“I did not notice the bottom of the craft until it was a light blue/white or white/light blue light. It was a softer than normal LED light. This light appeared to run the width of the craft. The height of the bottom of the craft to the ground was approximately 15 feet above the trees. I did notice that the trees did not move. When I realized there was a large craft not very far from me, I did not move. I knew that this was not anything I had seen, heard of or thought should be flying!”

The witness did not understand what was being seen.

“It did not make any sense that it could be moving. It looked heavy and not a way to stay in the air, no wings, etc. With no sound at all, it did bother me that I was in possible danger when I saw the light. It was only traveling approximately 2 mph and continued south until I could not see it any longer. I did not want to follow the craft down the road. I didn’t want the craft to notice me and I figured it could leave fast if need be. I can show you the exact spot I was sitting, where the craft was – I will never forget that.”

Could 'Planet X' Cause Comet Catastrophes on Earth?

As astronomers track down more clues as to the existence of a large world orbiting the sun in the outer fringes of the solar system, a classic planetary purveyor of doom has been resurrected as a possible trigger behind mass extinctions on Earth.

Yes, I'm talking about "Planet X." And yes, there's going to be hype.

Before we dive into comet impacts, extinctions and possible exciting planet discoveries, let's look at the dramatic history of Planet X.

At the turn of the 20th Century, astronomers were trying to track down massive planets in the outer solar system using a neat trick of planetary discovery that had already been developed by studying the orbits of known planets to see if they display any strange anomalies.

In 1846, Neptune was discovered in this way after French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier and British mathematician and astronomer John Couch Adams independently calculated the precise location of the planet by looking at orbital perturbations in Uranus' orbit. The gravitational bulk of Neptune was intermittently tugging on Uranus, producing anomalies in its motion. Naturally, when Neptune was known, astronomers tried that trick again by precisely following Neptune's orbit. Anomalies were found and the hunt for yet another as-yet-to-be-seen massive planet was on. This was the original hunt for Planet X.

ANALYSIS: Jupiter Got Smashed by a Speeding Space Rock

When Pluto was discovered in 1930 by US astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, it was thought the distant world was another massive planet. However, over the years, it became clear that Neptune's orbital perturbations were down to observational error and Pluto was actually a planetary lightweight and could have no gravitational influence over Neptune's orbit — a factor that contributed to its re-classification as a dwarf planet in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

Although many more small objects have been discovered in the solar system’s hinterland (a region known as the Kuiper belt), evidence for a massive world has been wanting. The hunt for a massive Planet X pretty much ended with the discovery of Pluto.

But the mysteries of the outer solar system kept beckoning scientists and conspiracy theorists alike. Some oddities in the distribution of Kuiper belt objects, for example, appeared to hint at a massive object slowly plodding in an orbit beyond Pluto. Also, by studying the paleontological record of Earth, our planet appears to have been impacted by quasi-periodic mass extinction events. Could an undiscovered planetary body be rampaging through the Kuiper belt (or even the more distant Oort cloud), destabilizing the orbits of comets, which are then sent hurtling into the inner solar system causing all kinds of havoc to life on our planet every few million years?

ANALYSIS: Does a Massive Planet Lurk in the Outer Solar System?

The deadly potential of such a hypothesis really got the doomsayer juices flowing in the run-up to the cringe-worthy theories that would culminate with the end of the Mayan "Long Count" calendar on Dec. 21, 2012. Profiteers and fame-hunting soothsayers concocted all kinds of doomsday scenarios that would happen on that day. One of them being the nonsensical notion that Planet X (or the even more farcical "Niburu") was rampaging through the solar system to, you guessed it, wipe out all life on Earth — either through a cometary barrage or solar firestorm. Good times.

Needless to say, 2012 came and went and we're still here. But this year, the Planet X hypothesis has made another comeback. This time, it's not the punchline of a bad doomsday joke, it's based on observations of the strange motion of objects in the outer solar system.

In January, Caltech astronomer and prolific Kuiper belt object discoverer Mike Brown and colleague Konstantin Batygin announced the discovery of a group of small icy objects beyond the orbit of Pluto that appear to be traveling in the same direction and at the same orbital inclination. The likelihood of this happening by chance is slim, so Brown and Batygin believe that their motion is caused by the presence of another — currently unseen — planet in the outer solar system perhaps 10 times the mass of Earth, orbiting up to 1,000 times the sun-Earth distance.

"When we found that, my jaw sort of hit the floor," Brown said at the time.

Top Doomsday Predictions Gone Bust

So there's indirect evidence of the existence of a massive planet that may be big enough to perturb the orbits of a group of small objects in the Kuiper belt, but small and dim enough to evade detection by infrared and visible light surveys. Like the discovery of Neptune, perhaps Brown and Batygin's calculations will guide astronomers to the precise location of the world — nicknamed "Planet Nine." This is most certainly an exciting time for planetary discovery within our own solar system.

Now, in a paper published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the specter of mass extinctions has once again arisen and has tied itself to the hype of Planet X and the new scientific hunt for Planet Nine.

According to Daniel Whitmire and John Matese, who, in 1985, co-wrote a featured article for Time magazine titled "Did Comets Kill the Dinosaurs? A Bold New Theory About Mass Extinctions," have revisited their mass extinction theories and formed a link with the search for Planet Nine.

By their reckoning, Earth is subject to major extinction events every 27 million years caused by a barrage of comets flung at Earth by the gravitational instabilities triggered by the eccentric orbit of a major planetary body like Planet Nine. As if a planetary bombardment wasn't enough, more dislodged comets would disintegrate close to the sun in the inner solar system, creating clouds of debris that dim the sunlight, causing a global cooling event that speeds up the demise of life on Earth.

INTERVIEW: Where Are You Hiding Planet X, Dr. Brown?

Though an interesting idea, more work is needed, even if the hypothetical Planet Nine is discovered to be real. Although there is evidence of mass extinctions on Earth being linked with periods of comet/asteroid bombardments, the trigger isn't necessarily the existence of a massive planet in the outer solar system. Previous studies have hinted that comet bombardment events coincide with the passage of the solar system through our galactic plane; it's actually a dense band of dark matter that causes the cometary drama on cycles of around 26 million years or so. There's also the nagging possibility that the apparent periodicity of extinction events and comet impacts may not be real.

This research assumes that Planet Nine has a huge orbital period — it would need to pass through the Kuiper belt every 26 million years for this theory to hold water. In an interview with the MailOnline, Brown pointed out that the Planet Nine he is looking for most likely isn't the Planet X Whitmire and Matese hopes it is.

"Whitmire has been speculating for decades about a very distant very massive planet pushing comets around. It has to have an orbital period of something like 27 million years," said Brown. "While that idea may or may not make sense, it definitely has nothing to do with Planet Nine, which is much closer to the sun and thus 'only' takes 15,000 years to go around."

"The evidence for Planet Nine says nothing about whether or not there is a more distant Planet X."

SpaceX was founded in 2012 with the express purpose of developing the technology needed for a Mars mission. SpaceX’s work to date for NASA and private companies has simply been the initial steps to gearing up for the Mars mission.

The point of the Mars mission is to make the human species interplanetary to increase its likelihood of surviving indefinitely.

Transporting & Sustaining a Human Colony on Mars

The SpaceX simulation and analytics group has been working on large-scale simulations of rocket processes in rocket engines. Relevant fields of engineering include computational fluid mechanics and plasma physics. SpaceX is in the process of identifying and developing technologies to transport and sustain a human colony on Mars.

Some of the rocket engines under development are based on particle accelerated design, simulation of combustion devices for chemical rocket propulsion, and high-density power generation systems.

According to GPU Technology Conference, at which Tesla presented a Mars Rocket Engine simulation:

“SpaceX is designing a new, methane-fueled engine powerful enough to lift the equipment and personnel needed to colonize Mars. A vital aspect of this effort involves the creation of a multi-physics code to accurately model a running rocket engine. The scale and complexity of turbulent non-premixed combustion has so far made it impractical to simulate, even on today’s largest supercomputers. We present a novel approach using wavelets on GPUs, capable of capturing physics down to the finest turbulent scales.”

Three-dimensional holograms have long been a favorite of science fiction movies. But because of the use of high-powered lasers to project the hologram, contact with the images was not possible.

Thanks to a major breakthrough by researchers in Japan, three-dimensional interactive holograms are now a reality. Researchers from the University of Tokyo have created 3D interactive holograms using powerful lasers that fire at a quadrillionth a second and are safe to touch and respond to human touch without burning skin.

The key to making these holograms safe is the ultra-short duration of the laser’s bursts that last between 30 and 270 femtoseconds (a femtosecond is a quadrillionth of a second) at a time.

Demonstrating the technology, researchers showed off holograms of a heart, a star, and a small fairy. They also demonstrated a checkbox that can be ticked by tapping it. The team will present its invention at theSiggraph 2015 conference in Los Angeles in August of this year.
