An Infant, Rogue Planet Has Been Found Lurking in Our Solar Neighborhood
An Infant, Rogue Planet Has Been Found Lurking in Our Solar Neighborhood
TNS / SETI Institute / Danielle Fuselaar and Franck Marchis
IN BRIEF
Astronomers from Carnegie and the University of Western Ontario have detected the youngest free-floating planet found to date, and it's only 95 light-years away.
THE WANDERER
A team of astronomers has detected a giant, free-floating planet some 4 to 8 times the mass of Jupiter in our neighborhood. The planet is kind of a missing link on the evolutionary scale, existing somewhere in between planets and the “failed stars” known as brown dwarfs.
The object is a “planet” in the truest sense of the word, as the term is derived from the Greekplanētes, “wanderers.” It bears the unromantic mouthful 2MASS J1119-1137 for a name, and it is located some 95 light-years away, which is practically next door from a galactic perspective.
Spotting 2MASS J1119-1137, and recognizing it for it was, took a little detective work. Astronomers have been fooled before—sometimes, something that seems planet-like and nearby turns out to really be nothing more than an old, dying red star, far away in some distant quarter of the galaxy, emitting its final gasps of radiation in the cool infrared.
A COSMIC NEWCOMER
Uncertain of what they had actually found, the team immediately ran the object’s spectrum through the FLAMINGOS-2 spectrograph on the Gemini South telescope in Chile—akin to getting its full DNA profile.
And the results proved that 2MASS J1119-1137 was no distant red giant; it was indeed nearby, and quite small and young. And that was the other half of the problem—determining its age.
They knew 2MASS J1119-1137 must be quite young, since it shone so brightly in the infrared, a pretty sure sign the tiny object retained the latent heat of a recent birth. Through a sophisticated series of line-of-sight measurements, the team determined that the planet was moving with an identical motion and velocity to a cluster of stars called the TW Hydrae association.
This cluster was known to be only 10 million years old; therefore, 2MASS J1119-1137 must be of the same age. Which means it’s pretty young—infantile, in fact, considering our aged Sun clocks in at a great-grandfatherly 4.5 billion years. It’s the youngest free-floating planet known, beating out the previous record-holder, an object called PSO J318.5-22, which, at 23 million years old, is over twice the age of the new champion.
“Discovering free-floating planet analogs like 2MASS J1119-1137 and PSO J318.5−22 offers a great opportunity to study the nature of giant planets outside the Solar System,” observes Kendra Kellogg, lead author of the study.

The outer door slammed shut and a deathly hush descended on the tiny soundproofed room. Half an hour in here, lying in a kind of dentist's reclining chair, might have seemed a restful prospect - except for the converted motorcycle helmet on my head. Embedded in either side of it, just above my ears, were sets of solenoids. Soon these would be delivering pulses of a magnetic field designed to mimic the firing patterns of neurons in the temporal lobes of the brain.
Welcome to the laboratory of Michael Persinger, a neuro-scientist at Laurentian University of Sudbury, Ontario. Persinger has long claimed that mystical experiences, out-of- the-body excursions and other psychic experiences are linked in some way to excessive bursts of electrical activity in the temporal lobes. It is known that people vary in what is called "temporal lobe lability''. People with high lability have very ''unstable'' temporal lobes with frequent bursts of electrical activity that can be seen on an EEG (electroencephalograph). Such people tend, he claims to be anxious and judgmental as well as artistic. People with low lability, by contrast, rarely show bursts of activity in their temporal lobes and are much less imaginative.
Researchers don't need expensive EEG tests to measure temporal lobe lability. Instead they can use questionnaires designed to test a wide range of experiences and beliefs, from deja vu to headaches. In a series of studies of this kind, questioning about several hundred people in all, Persinger has found that people with high lability more frequently report sensations of floating, flying or leaving the body as well as mystical and psychic experiences. At the extreme end of the scale are people with temporal lobe epilepsy Their temporal lobes produce the violent, synchronized electrical activity associated with seizures - and sometimes they too report deja vu, mystical feelings, odd sensations or hallucinations just before a seizure.
One final connection may be that abnormal temporal lobe activity can occur in response to a lack of oxygen. Persinger is one of several scientists who have argued that this is why people who come close to death experience tunnels, lights and sensations of leaving the body.
In the end, however, these observations are nothing more than correlations They don't prove that neural activity in the temporal lobes causes psychic experiences -or even that it is an effect of psychic experience. What has been missing is a direct demonstration that specific experiences can be created by specific firing of neurons in this part of the brain. Hence the soundproofed room, helmet and magnetic pulses. Persinger believed that by applying magnetic fields across the brain he could cause bursts of firing in the temporal lobes - bursts just like those associated with the odd experiences. If he could produce the experiences this way, the link with the temporal lobes would be certain.
The reason I was willing to subject myself to this procedure was not just idle curiosity The BBC's science programme Horizon had asked me to investigate the origin of the latest American craze in crazy experience - abduction by aliens. The details vary. Not everyone claims to have been taken from their bedroom. Some report abductions from their cars or in the street. And many abductees, although not all, say that they saw children or babies while they were "away". Despite that, the stories are more remarkable for their consistency than their differences. A typical report might run as follows.
"I woke up in the middle of the night and everything looked odd and strangely lit. At the end of my bed was a 4 feet high grey alien. Its spindly, thin body supported a huge head with two enormous, slanted, liquid black eyes. It compelled me, telepathically, to follow and led me into a spaceship, along curved corridors to an examination room full of tables on which other people lay. I was forced to lie down while they painfully examined me, extracted ova (or sperm) and implanted something in my nose. I could see jars containing half-human, half-alien fetuses and a nursery full of silent sickly children. When I eventually found myself back in bed, several hours had gone by."
Some abductees recall their experiences in full detail, but for many the "memories" emerge only when they take themselves to a therapist for hypnotic regression. These tales are easy to mock. Why do the aliens always pick Americans? How come they are clever enough to teleport through walls, and to read and erase our memories - but all we have to do to defeat them is a little hypnosis? And if they really put implants in people's noses, how come these always seem to be sneezed out?
Mind works
Maybe abduction accounts are merely the delusions of the disturbed or the mentally ill. This is easy to counter. Studies of abductees have shown that they are of at least average intelligence, from a wide range of social classes and show no particular signs of mental disturbance or pathology. So what is the explanation? Are alien abduction stories telling us sometime about the way the mind works?
The fundamental question for neuroscience is the precise relationship between subjective experience and neural firing. In some cases things are relatively simple. A flash of light, for example, produces a cascade of electrical responses at the back of the cortex, while listening to someone speak produces a burst of activity in the left hemisphere. Far less obvious, though, is how patterns of brain activity produce complex subjective states - such as the sensation of having been abducted by an alien.
Things are complicated by the fact that some abductors only ''recall'' their experiences under hypnosis. Maybe the hypnotists implanted the ideas, creating "memories" of things that never happened. This takes us to the broader issue of false memories (see "When memory plays us false", New Scientist, 23 July). The key thing here is that ''false memories" are not so different from "true memories''. In a sense, all memories are false. There is no tape recorder in the brain. Rather, research suggests that we use stored information to reconstruct accounts of past events When we retell those events, it is easy to recall our own retelling more clearly than the original experience - even if we've exaggerated it a bit along the way. How, then, can we decide which memories were "real" and which imagined? There is no magic way to the right answer, and some theorists think it just depends on how readily available an image is. If it is clear and detailed and easy to bring to mind, it will be remembered as "real".
When memory is seen this way the phenomenon of false memory seems less bizarre. Take recent experiments by Elizabeth Loftus, a psychologist from Seattle, Washington. She invited volunteers into her laboratory and tried to implant in them the "memory'' of being lost in a shopping mall as a young child. The subjects had never actually been lost this way (as far as anyone knew) but their relatives took part by 'reminding'' them of the event. Afterwards the subjects ''remembered'' the events clearly and, even when Loftus tried to debrief them, some remained convinced that it had happened.
What does this tell us about alien abductions? First, we must not be diverted by the red herring of hypnosis. Not all abductees are hypnotised, and "false memories'' can be created without hypnosis. If you come up with a fantasy of an abduction, then you may well recall it as though it is real whether or not hypnosis is involved.
However, false memory cannot be the whole story. In general, we are quite good at distinguishing fantasy from reality, in spite of the blurred edges, and we do not create false memories entirely out of the blue. Even if false memory plays a role in alien abduction episodes, wouldn't there have to be some kind of core event to build the fantasies around? If so, what might this event be?
One suggestion is sleep paralysis. During normal REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, when the majority of dreams occur, the skeletal muscles are paralysed. This is presumably so that we do not act out our dreams, as animals have been shown to do when the brain centres controlling sleep are suppressed Normally, we are unaware of this, but occasionally we can become mentally alert while the paralysis persists. Waking up this way can be extremely unpleasant. Yet it is quite common, surveys show that about 20 per cent of people have experienced sleep paralysis at some time or another.
Trying to move - and failing - makes it worse and often provokes the sense that there is someone or something trying to squash, strangle or suffocate you. Sexual arousal during dreams is common and may add a particularly powerful edge to the experience.
Some cultures have built elaborate myths around sleep paralysis. Fabled demons, the incubus and succubus, come to have sex with their unwilling victims in the dead of night, and during the Middle Ages many a virgin or nun was reputedly visited by the evil incubi who came to tempt them. In myths common in Newfoundland, the Old Hag comes and presses on sleepers' chests, suffocating them and preventing them from moving. And the hill people of Laos and Vietnam talk of a Grey Ghost who paralyses victims in the dark.
Alien abductions may just be a modern equivalent of a sleep paralysis myth. It makes sense that in late 20th century Western culture the spaceship and the alien would form its basis. But why the odd lights and other consistent features?
Eerie lighting is common in another kind of sleep disturbance - the false awakening - in which you dream you have woken up. Although you are convinced you are awake, things don't look quite right and familiar objects can seem lit from within. In this state anything is possible because you are still dreaming, but the apparent familiarity of the environment means that the experiences are more likely to be interpreted as real. This is one variety of what Celia Green, a parapsychologist with an independent laboratory in Oxford, refers to as a "metachoric experience'' where the perceived world is replaced by an imagined replica.
A link between sleep disturbance and apparent abductions is lent some support by the research of the late Nicholas Spanos and his colleagues at Carleton University in Ottawa. They compared groups of people who had had intense UFO experiences, such as abduction, with those who had had less intense experiences and found that the former were more often related to sleep.
Floating or flying
But even if sleep phenomena are part of the answer, that doesn't explain the sense of being taken away bodily, of flying or floating and going on a journey. Enter Persinger and his idea that abduction-like experiences are caused by complex patterns of atoms in the temporal lobes. He argues that people with very labile temporal lobes will naturally have such experiences from time to time. These are particularly likely to occur during sleep and so these people might easily wake up with odd bodily sensations and feelings of floating or flying.
In addition, magnetic effects from earthquakes could be strong enough to set off the necessary firing. To test this he looked for, and found, a strong link between the dates of seismic events and claims of UF0 sightings, abductions and other strange phenomena from past centuries. Nor can hysteria and fear be the sole explanations, he argues. Reports of strange experiences peaked in the weeks and months before earthquakes, says Persinger, when magnetic changes might have been happening, but little else to suggest an imminent seismic event.
Those who believe that abductions really happen have tried to counter this theory by showing that abductees do not score higher on measures of temporal lobe lability. But arguments have raged over whether enough people were tested, and whether their experiences were really abductions. Now, in a bid to settle the issue, Persinger is turning to direct simulations. And this is where my experiences in the lab chamber come into the picture.
I was wide awake throughout. Nothing seemed to happen for the first ten minutes or so. Instructed to describe aloud anything that happened, I felt under pressure to say something, anything. Then suddenly my doubts vanished. "I'm swaying. It's like being on a hammock.” Then it felt for all the world as though two hands had grabbed my shoulders and were bodily yanking me upright. I knew I was still lying in the reclining chair, but someone, or something, was pulling me up.
Something seemed to get hold of my leg and pull it, distort it, and drag it up the wall. It felt as though I had been stretched half way up to the ceiling. Then came the emotions. Totally out of the blue, but intensely and vividly I suddenly felt angry - not just mildly cross but that clear-minded anger out of which you act - but there was nothing and no one to act on. After perhaps ten seconds, it was gone. Later, it was replaced by an equally sudden attack of fear. I was terrified - of nothing in particular. The long term medical effects of applying strong magnetic fields to the brain are largely unknown, but I felt weak and disoriented for a couple of hours after coming out of the chamber.
Of course, I knew that it was all caused by the magnetic field changes, but what would people feel if such things happened spontaneously in the middle of the night? Wouldn't they want, above all, to find an explanation, to find out who had been doing it to them? If someone told them an alien was responsible and invited them to join an abductees' support group, wouldn't some of them seize on the idea, if only to reassure themselves that they weren't going mad?
One last thought. Persinger applied a silent and invisible force to my brain and created a specific experience for me He claimed that he was imitating the basic sequences of the processes of memory and perception and that, by varying those sequences, he could control my experience. Could he have done it from a distance? Could it be done on a wider scale? Suddenly prospects of magnetic mind control seem an awful lot worse than the idea of being abducted by imaginary aliens.
For at least 78 people in Toronto, the truth was also flying right in front of their eyes during 2015, according to the annual Canadian UFO survey.
Conducted by Winnipeg-based Ufology Research, the survey compiles reported UFO sightings across Canada each year appearing in various sources, most of them online. Each year, the group publishes those reports, assigning ratings to each based on strangeness, believability and number of witnesses.
In 2015, Toronto and the surrounding area saw 78 UFOs, ranking below only Montreal, with 97 reports. Toronto’s numbers declined this year, even though total sightings in Canada have gone up. In 2013, the city had 111 sightings, while in 2012 it had 107.
Cataloguing UFO sightings might sound like the work of true believers, but Chris Rutkowski, a science writer and one of the researchers at Ufology research, said the group is only probing for the truth.
“There’s a lot of speculation and sensational information that’s all over the Internet regarding UFOs, but we were concerned that there’s not enough good data in the sense of what is really being seen by people,” Rutkowski said.
What people see, it turns out, can vary wildly. The group takes in all reports, even those of people claiming to be alien hybrids — one reporter in Hamilton claimed to be one of them stranded on Earth, using electromagnetic waves to keep hidden.
The reports are ranked on believability, taking together the number of witnesses, photographic evidence and sometimes interviews with the witnesses.
Rutkowski acknowledged that only about 10 to 12 per cent of sightings are unexplained, and an even smaller percentage — between one and three per cent — are really high-quality unexplained UFOs. Still, with a total of 17,000 sightings since the group started tracking data in 1989, those one to three per cent add up, he said.
“Those are, for example, by pilots, where there is documentation, and we’ve had the chance to speak with the individuals and look at flight plans,” he said.
One such UFO appeared in Toronto in October, when an early-morning observer saw a golden-hued diamond floating above the city. The incident made it into the report’s list of most interesting unexplained UFO sightings.
Skeptics might be surprised to learn that Rutkowski has never seen a UFO, despite an astronomy background and a lifetime of interest in the phenomenon.
“I’ve been out several times looking … for quite a number of years, but nothing has gone by that really made me shake my head and wonder,” he said.
Rutkowski considers himself an agnostic as to whether alien life is out there, visiting us in fast-moving, but shy, saucers, but he thinks people should take UFOs seriously, even if purely as a social phenomenon.
“Whether … there’s aliens visiting us, or there’s a natural phenomenon that needs studying, or perhaps there’s military exercises that are increasing in frequency, this is a real phenomenon and shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand,” he said.
Weird sights over Canadian skies
A photo of a purported UFO seen in Toronto last Oct. 11, which ranked relatively high on the believability scale of a Canadian UFO survey.
Here is a sample of the potentially extraterrestrial sightings Canadians had in 2015:
Jan. 21, 2015 — Fort McMurray, Alta.
Spotted at 10:22 p.m. and classified as a nocturnal light, it was described by the person who reported it as “multicoloured lights flying around changing directions.” The report received a four on the believability scale, which ranges from one to nine, one having the lowest reliability. (The highest rating on any report received in 2015 was seven.)
Jan. 21, 2015 — Fredericton, NB.
Seen for about two hours, this UFO was described as a “stationary light in the sky that appears to change colours,” though it’s hard to make out in the photo. Like the sighting in Fort McMurray, it received a four on the reliability scale.
June 14, 2015 — Summerside, PEI.
The description in the survey calls this UFO only an “object in the sky,” but the photo appears to show a saucer-shaped object hovering or flying over a field. It also received a four on the believability scale.
Oct. 3, 2015 — Vernon, B.C.
This photo scores even lower on the believability scale — a three — and the entry in the database include the question “photoshopped?” It appears to show three white lights close to the ground in Vernon, B.C. The photo also appears to be second-hand, showing a computer monitor showing the photo, instead of the photo directly.
Oct. 11, 2015 — Toronto
This is one of the more believable UFO accounts, meriting a seven on the believability scale. The person who submitted the report described the UFO as a golden-hued, diamond-shaped object that changed colour, “from white to pink to green to near metallic to blue.” The event was also given an “unknown” in the survey explanation field, which means researchers couldn’t come up with a plausible explanation for the object.
UFO watchers were able to spot a Millennium Falcon-like metal object above the Earth via NASA live feed from the International Space Station. The incident, however, was faced with controversy after NASA cut the broadcast. (Photo : Vladimir Pustovit | Flickr)
A UFO watcher spotted a millennium falcon-like metal object while watching a NASA live feed from the International Space Station, drawing questions and pushing the space agency to explain.
The so-called metal spaceship is said to look like it belongs to aStar Wars production set. However, NASA has yet to confirm anything.
Surprising Experience
Among the UFO watchers who got a firsthand experience of seeing the metal object was 20-year-old Jadon Beeson from Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, United Kingdom.
Beeson was watching the live stream footage on his phone on April 5 when he unexpectedly noticed a bizarre-looking object in the background of the actual clip.
He took a closer look and realized that a metal object is above the Earth. He further describes it as having a blue glow and that it remained in its spot for approximately two minutes.
Beeson was able to get a screenshot of what he saw. He sent the photo to NASA, along with his message of inquiry and request for explanation. Up until now, the space agency has not yet responded or made a statement.
The Millennium Falcon-like Metal Object
Beeson described the object as having similar features with the Millennium Falcon, which is one of the spaceships in the Star Wars movies. He adds that it can also pass as an object from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, a 1977 fantasy movie whose main characters attempted to contact aliens.
He considers the object very strange, but admits that he has no idea about what it really was. He then hopes that experts can help him find out.
Live Feed Cut
The live feed, which may be viewed from the NASA app for free, was cut short after the suspected UFO surfaced from the gadget screens of Earthlings looking intently at the footage at that time. Such move by the space agency sparks controversies, especially because it has not provided any explanation yet.
This is not the first time that NASA cut its live feed from the ISS. In 2015, people saw what look like UFOs zooming away from the Earth. What's strange is that NASA cut the feed in the middle of the broadcast.
Such action of NASA raises allegations that it is trying to cover up the presence of possible UFOs lurking near the planet.
He said: “I was watching the live stream on my iPhone on Tuesday night and I popped away to see my neighbours and came back an hour later – I had left the stream on on my phone.
“I looked and realised there was a metal object above the earth. It had a blue glow to it and it stayed there for about two minutes.
“It was a metallic object, it looks like a Millennium Falcon from Star Wars or something from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
“I thought it was all very strange.”
The space agency are yet to comment on Beeson’s images.
In the past, NASA have explained that space debris could explain UFO claims.
Canadian survey reports increased UFO sightings in 2015
Canadian survey reports increased UFO sightings in 2015
By Daniel Uria
The Canadian UFO survey was released on Monday and reported the second highest number of UFO sightings in 30 years. An overall increase in UFO sightings was reported across the country including a massive upswing in Quebec, where 35 percent of the sightings for the year occurred. A total of 12 percent of the sightings were classified as unexplained with the remainder being simple lights in the sky or cell phone towers. Photo by M. Cornelius/Shutterstock
WINNIPEG, Manitoba, April 12 (UPI) -- A survey of UFO sightings in Canada found that the country saw a general increase in reported sightings in 2015 and the second highest totals in 30 years.
The Canadian UFO survey was released on Monday, revealing statistics about various sightings that took place throughout the country in 2015.
According to the survey, three or four UFO sightings a day were reported adding up to a total of 1,267 for the entire year. The total ranked second only to 2012 when 1,981 reports were made in the midst of the end of the world predictions based on the Mayan calendar.
The 2015 Canadian UFO Survey: Summary of Results
There were 1,267 UFO sightings reported in Canada in 2015, or about three or four each day.
2015 saw the second-highest number of UFO sightings recorded in Canada during the last 30 years, second only to 1,981 reports in 2012, when media attention and pop culture brought attention to the so-called “end of the world” in 2012 according to the Mayan Calendar. There were 1,180 reports in 2013 and 1,021 reports in 2014.
Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland had more reported UFOs in 2015 compared with 2014.
In 2015, Quebec had about 35 per cent of all Canadian UFO reports, much more than in previous years, when the percentage was between 5 and 15 per cent. In 2015, slightly less than 12 per cent of all UFO reports were classified as unexplained.
The typical UFO sighting lasted approximately 16 minutes in 2015.
"That ranges from reports from B.C. right across to Newfoundland," science writer Chris Rutkowski, who was one of the writers of the report told the CBC. "We're very puzzled because we don't hear a lot about UFOs anymore although the UFO sightings continue to come in...in 2015, there was an unusual number of cases from Quebec, in fact three or four times."
Several theories for the increase in UFO sightings were presented in the study, including possible increases in military testing and other objects in the sky, increased ability to share and report sightings due to the internet and even an increased desire by some people to look skyward for assistance due to economic downturn.
The study accounts for explainable phenomenon such as lights in the sky and reported that in 2015 just less than 12 percent of all UFO sightings were classified as unexplained.
"We do break those down into high quality cases, where we do have enough information from a number of sources – investigators have gone to a site or we've talked to the witnesses," Rutkowski said. "It brings the unexplained numbers to a more manageable number of one or two or three percent."

Date of sighting: March 26, 2016 Location of sighting: Santiago de Cali, Colombia This UFO is disk shaped and looks similar to the clouds themselves. Its speed is the only thing giving it away. It was caught by Mipropiosoft of Youtube. There are no wings or tail visible so its not a plane. I really wish he had a zoom lens so we could see this close up. Its not a meteor or comet because it has no tail. Odd one. Scott C. Waring www.ufosightingsdaily.com Eyewitnessstates: While recording a cloud for signs of a phenomenon called Jumping Sundogs (Saltarines Dogs) I found an object at high speed across the sky of the city of Santiago de Cali.

Evidence of giant aliens race found mingling with Native Americans, April 2016, Video, UFO Sighting News.
Date of video: April 12, 2016 Location of pipe: North Carolina, USA There are actually dozens of reports about contact or witnessing giant aliens (Friendship case, Rocca Pia) and even tiny 3cm tall aliens (Apollo 20 testimony by William Rutledge). There is also a powerful group on this planet that tries to prevent the discovery of such evidence by stealing it and making it disappear, so says records of almost all giant skeletons found around the world and in America. Scott C. Waring www.ufosightingsdaily.com LA Marzulli of Youtube states: I was recently in Burnsville North Carolina speaking at a conference there. My host, Emily took to me to father's and uncle's store, Rings and Things and what they brought out from the back room was simply astonishing. IN this video you will see a very large pipe. Is it ceremonial as some main-stream anthropologist will insist, or does this pipe point to the veracity of the Native American Oral tradition which tells us Giants once roamed the land. Come with me as we explore what may be a Nephilim Artifact, with a special appearance by Chied Joseph Riverwind and Dr. Lauralynn Riverwind.
These two ships were brilliantly lit up so I added some contrast to bring out some of its detail. Its surface is cube like, but its design denotes intelligence. The 90 degree angles could not be made in nature. Also these UFO leave no trail like a comet or astroid would do. One day, humanity will be aware of these species and these ships, miles long will be docked over Earths major cities. Scott C. Waring www.ufosightingsdaily.com
Streetcap1 states: Two structures in Space at point L1, one million miles away. Also a white object probably moving filmed over a 19.3 seconds open shutter, appears as a long object. Maybe one of ours meets one of theirs? Streetcap1.
Do aliens exist? Most compelling evidence of alien existence
Do aliens exist? Most compelling evidence of alien existence
Some say it’s obvious we’re not alone, others scorn the very idea and still others yet will hauntingly report their own experiences of alien probings following their casual night-time stroll through the fields of small town America. But with everything from increasingly bizarre reportings from increasingly credible sources, to basic mathematical probability suggesting the likelihood of alien life, these days, scepticism is harder won. Whatever your opinions, you may well find that the following examples have some impact on them.
Ancient evidence
It’s easy enough to write off much recent phenomena, quoting anything from wayward weather balloons to the perpetuation of the legend and UFO sightings in pop culture providing a cohesive image of extra terrestrials for eye witnesses to draw on should someone cry alien. But what’s slightly harder to dismiss is the ancient evidence (i.e. pre the National Enquirer). Enter the ‘The Madonna with Saint Giovannino’, otherwise known as the UFO painting.
"The Madonna with Saint Giovannino" Arcangelo di Jacopo del Sellaio [FAL], via Wikimedia Commons
Created in the 15th century, it depicts the Virgin Mary and in the backdrop of the painting, a man and his dog staring up at a hovering disk-like object that is suspiciously familiar. And this painting isn’t alone either, with everything from ancient cave paintings to Sanskrit Scrolls all depicting alien life. A sighting even crops up in the Bible in The Book of Ezekiel. Either this is compelling evidence, or humanity has a rich tradition of conspiracy theorists.
In the ancient city of Paracas, Peru, archeologists have uncovered mummified remains with elongated skulls dating back to 300 BC.
The famed crystal skulls of ancient Mesoamerica have been a source of mystery and controversy for decades. The handful of known skulls have defied even the most advanced scientific efforts to determine who made them, when, and most puzzling, how. This specimen, owned by the British Museum in London, was originally thought to have been made by the Aztec of Mexico but was later determined to be a fake.
Statistical data
Back in 1961, astronomer Frank Drake devised an equation by which he could estimate the likelihood of the existence of alien life, taking into account a number of factors including the average number of planets able to support life and the fraction that could go on to support intelligent life. This was then implemented in 2001. The result: statistically, hundreds of thousands of such planets should technically exist.
Unsolved sightings
There are more registered sightings of UFOs than there is the word count here to deal with them and the majority of the time, there’s a thorough debunking accompanying them. But throughout history there have been a number that have been harder to explain away, from the to 1853 sighting by a number of students and professors at the Tennessee College campus, to the oft quoted Stephenville Lights case from 2008, with over 200 witnesses spotting the UFO including three policemen who remained anonymous. Consider these compelling cases unsolved.
Astronauts’ claims
If you’re going to believe any reports of UFOs, you might as well trust those coming from the men who have actually been to space (who usually also come with all their teeth and a P.H.D.). The list of those who have made claims of sightings includes Edgar Mitchell, Cady Coleman and Dr. Brian O’Leary, many also referencing government knowledge of alien existence and cover-ups. Buzz Aldrin has also spoken of his own experience on board the Apollo 11 when they saw something flying alongside them. At first they thought it was the final stage of the detached rocket, until mission control confirmed it was 6000 miles away from them…
Government files
While some US presidents have released classified files on the subject of UFOs, with Jimmy Carter famously describing his own encounter, others still have been denied access to classified information on the subject altogether, Bill Clinton claiming to be among them. This has led many believers to suggest there’s a cover up afoot. Clinton has been consistently vocal on the existence of aliens and it’s worth noting his opinions on an ‘Independence Day’ situation too. You know, just in case…

Stephen Hawking wil ruimtevaartuig naar ster Alpha Centauri sturen
Stephen Hawking wil ruimtevaartuig naar ster Alpha Centauri sturen
Tim Kraaijvanger
Open Overlay GalleryThe engine on Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket restarted at 3,635 feet above ground to get ready for its landing.
BLUE ORIGIN
IN BRIEF
Jeff Bezos' private spaceflight company just relaunched and relanded a rocket. It's the second time that Blue Origin has reused this particular New Shepard rocket and the third time the rocket has gone to space.
BLUE ORIGIN IS AT IT AGAIN
Blue Origin did a really cool thing – for the thirdtime. The private spaceflight company, owned and operated by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, successfully re-launched and re-landed its New Shepard rocket. This is the second time this particular reusable rocket has been launched, but the third time it has been to space (but not high enough to reach orbit).
So you might be thinking, this has already been done a few times. What’s new?
Blue Origin tweaked and added a couple new features to the spacecraft on its third journey. First, the engines restart at 1,097 meters (3,600 feet) in the air in order to gain more stability in sticking the landing. Second, the crew capsule separates from the rocket and lands with its own parachute. Third, two microgravity experiments were placed onboard.
The first experiment mimics the surface conditions on asteroids. Learn about it in the video below.
The second experiment mimics impacts between objects in microgravity. These experiments were investigated and constructed by the Southwest Research Institute, and a physics professor and students from the University of Central Florida, respectively. They couldn’t effectively be executed in the conditions that exist on Earth.
Hence, the voyage up.
THE CLASH OF TWO EGOS
Bezos is pretty darn happy about these accomplishments. But Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, has had his hands full as well.
The two commercial space companies are both in an arms race to create a better reusable rocket. Although Blue Origin claimed to be the first to land its rocket after going into space last November, SpaceX landed and went into orbit. That’s a pretty difficult feat to accomplish, and it requires a whole lot of energy.
Although Blue Origin posted some videos of successful landings, SpaceX records livestreams of its launches and landings for their audience. In any case, one thing is clear, this really is a race to space 2.0. Here’s a video from Blue Origin’s third trip and some spectacular images.

Curiosity Uncovers How Mysterious Mile-High Mounds Formed on the Red Planet

IN BRIEF
On Mars, water-filled craters transformed into dry, mile-high mounds with the help of wind, according to new research. The results explain the complexity of the Gale Crater (the Curiosity rover's landing site).
Now, recent images collected from the Curiosity rover gives us more evidence that water didn’t just exist on Mars in droplets—there was probably a proverbial ocean of it.
GALE CRATER
Curiosity shows that the Gale Crater was once filled with water. Now, it’s a mile-high mound of sedimentary (layered) rock. Curiosity’s detailed analysis of the mound shows that the sediments at the bottom of the mound came from water, while the top sediments were formed by wind. The strange geography of the mound is believed to be caused by Mars’ strong winds that shape the entire planet’s geology.
To test this theory, researchers created a mini-crater on Earth that measured 30 centimeters (12 inches) wide and 4 centimeters (1.6 inches) deep. They filled it with damp sand, then blasted it with wind. Results show the wind’s movement in relation to different stages of erosion.
THE SEARCH CONTINUES
“We went from a filled crater layer cake to this mounded shape that we see today,” saidMackenzie Day, a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin Jackson School of Geosciences. The resulting composition and structure that we see adds more evidence that Mars was once wetter and warmer in previous eons.
The subsequent analysis of 30 different Mars mounds links them to the Noachian period (3.7 billion years ago). The Noachian period could be the culprit in finding out the mystery of Mars’ water, as it’s believed to represent the beginning of its disappearance, turning the Red Planet into a dry and barren giant.
Stem Cell Technique Could Regenerate Any Human Tissue Damaged By Aging or Disease
Stem Cell Technique Could Regenerate Any Human Tissue Damaged By Aging or Disease
IN BRIEF
Taking their cue from salamander regeneration, a team led by the University of New South Wales says that a stem cell therapy capable of regenerating any human tissue damaged by injury, disease, or aging could be available within a few years, thanks to an innovative new technique.
STEM CELL CLAYFACE
While stem cells have worked wonders in medicinal research, showing signs of curing everything from spinal cord injuries to blindness, they’ve always had their shortcomings. But one study is promising a new “game changing” technique for stem cells.
Taking their cue from salamander regeneration, new research led by the University of New South Wales says that a stem cell therapy capable of regenerating any human tissue damaged by injury, disease, or aging could be available within a few years, through an innovative new technique.
The technique involves reprogramming bone and fat cells into “induced multipotent stem cells” (iMS). These cells are special in that they can regenerate multiple tissue types.
There are two kinds of stem cells: embryonic stem cells that during embryonic development generate every type of cell in the human body, and adult stem cells that are tissue-specific, and unable to regenerate multiple tissue types. Embryonic stem cells would be preferable, save that they are prone to form teratomas (tumors composed of different tissue types), and their use is highly controversial.
THE TECHNIQUE
The method used by the researchers is, quite frankly, amazing. They took bone and fat cells in mice, switched off their memory, and transformed them into stem cells.
To be specific, the technique involves extracting adult human fat cells and treating them with the compound 5-Azacytidine (AZA), along with platelet-derived growth factor-AB (PDGF-AB) for approximately two days. The cells are then treated with the growth factor alone for a further two to three weeks.
The AZA relaxes the hard-wiring of the cells by inducing cell plasticity, and this is expanded by the growth factor. Release the iMS into damaged tissue, and they will multiply, healing the tissue.
The technique is a huge step up from other stem-cell therapies, since embryonic stem cell therapies may form tumors, and others use viruses to transform cells into stem cells.
The current trials use iMS from adult human fat cells inserted into mice. Human trials for this technique are expected by late 2017.
If you’re talking about conspiracy theories, sooner or later you’re going to talk about extraterrestrial activity, be it ancient aliens, UFO sightings, abductions, or a combination of all three. Alien-based conspiracy theories are a dime a dozen, but one of them stands oversized grey head and shoulders above the rest, proving itself remarkably resilient even in the face of repeated debunkings: The crash at Roswell, New Mexico.
The Roswell UFO crash
Some time in June of 1947, something crashed to the earth on a ranch in the Roswell, New Mexico area. Something that, if you believe the conspiracy theorists, is, at the very least, a part of a UFO, if not a complete one, possibly including alien life forms, that may or may not have been experimented upon before or after their death. That’s a lot we just dropped on you, so let’s back up some. Here’s what we know.
On July 8, a press release was issued from the Roswell Army Air Field. This initial release acknowledged the crash and claimed that a “flying disc” had been recovered from it, and a subsequent statement from the Air Force claimed that the crash was simply a weather balloon that they had since recovered. They held a press conference, where they showed off wreckage from the crash that seemed to back up the weather balloon claim, and for a moment, it appeared that was that.
Here’s the sticky part though: The thing that crashed to the earth was not a weather balloon. This is not a conspiracy theory or a wild supposition, it’s a fact acknowledged by conspiracy theorists, skeptics and even the United States Air Force. The balloon that crashed to the earth in 1947 was actually part of Project Mogul, an initiative that involved using high-altitude balloons to keep tabs on the Soviet’s atomic bomb tests. But, seeing as the project was top secret at the time, the United Air Force kept the lid on the balloon’s true purpose, a fact that would later help to fuel the countless conspiracy theories around the crash.
Another piece of fuel for the Roswell conspiracy theory is the whole matter of “flying discs.” Prior to the discovery of the crash, civilians had reported sightings of flying discs in the area. Of course, while we can definitely understand how a balloon — especially at night — might resemble a flying disc, in hindsight, it was a poor choice of words for that initial press release, as “flying disc” is remarkably similar to a phrase most commonly associated with alien spacecraft: Flying saucers.
One of the most interesting things about the Roswell conspiracy theory is that it didn’t really pick up steam for more than 30 years. The Air Force’s weather balloon explanation — while not entirely truthful — was more or less accepted by pretty much everyone, until 1978.
That was the year that Stanton T. Friedman, a nuclear physicist and author, kickstarted the conspiracy theories with his research into the event, which prominently featured interviews with Jesse Marcel, who accompanied the crash wreckage from its recovery site to the press conference. Two years later, The Roswell Incident was published, a book that, claiming to have interviewed more than 90 witnesses, suggested that the crash was a UFO that contained alien organisms.
Books about the crash site continued to be published through the nineties, as more and more “witnesses” came out of the shadows, and conspiracy theorists combined their reports, secondhand accounts and a general disbelief in official government stories to build up a massive corpus of oftentimes spurious research. In fact, there are so many books and theories about Roswell that the conspiracy theorists can no longer even agree on simple questions such as how the UFO crashed or how many bodies were recovered from it.
The biggest problem with all of these theories — aside from the fact that they took a full three decades to come to light — is the quality of the witnesses. Though The Roswell Incident claims to have interviewed more than 90 of them, only 25 appear in the book, only seven saw the crash’s wreckage, and of those, only five actually touched it. Other books about the subject share this problem, one where they assign firsthand weight to accounts that are, at absolute best, secondhand — and even that’s being generous.
As a result of the steadily growing interest in the Roswell incident, in 1994, the Air Force came clean about what actually crashed in the desert. It was then that they acknowledged that the crash was actually part of Project Mogul. Three years later, the Air Force even addressed reports of alien bodies, by suggesting that the rumors and conspiracy theories are a result of civilian sightings of casualties from military accidents or even just test dummies. Of course, as one might expect, conspiracy theorists discounted these statements as simply another layer of the cover up.
Another one of the more fascinating aspects of the Roswell conspiracy theories is that they feature practically no hard evidence. While other conspiracy theories can point to photos, videos, eyewitness accounts and a slew of other sources to point out inconsistencies in the official stories they are meant to debunk, when it comes to the Roswell UFO incident, it’s the conspiracy theories themselves that are riddled with inconsistencies and claims that are, quite simply, without any real basis in reality. Even the heavily publicized 1995 alien autopsy video was later revealed to be nothing more than a reconstruction of events that were said to have occurred.
Of course, none of that has kept the true believers from continuing to point at Roswell as an example of both UFO activity as well as the government’s commitment to covering it up, leading to it becoming one of America’s most enduring conspiracy theories.
What do you think? Was the 1947 crash near Roswell simply a test balloon, as the Air Force claims, or even now, almost 70 years later, are they still hiding what really happened? Tell us below in the comments.
