REAL LIFE IRON MAN SETS NEW JET SUIT SPEED RECORD
REAL LIFE IRON MAN SETS NEW JET SUIT SPEED RECORD
Richard Browning, the chief test pilot and founder of Gravity Industries, has made his way into the Guinness World Record books for the fastest speed in a jet suit and he has become the real-life Iron Man.
Browning took the title in Reading in the UK to celebrate the Guinness World Records Day 2017. Pravin Patel was the adjudicator, and he verified the achievement to make sure that the speed had been measured accurately and Browning flew over the minimum distance, which was 100 meters.
GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR JET SUIT SPEED SET BY REAL LIFE IRON MAN
Browning managed to achieve a speed of 32.02 mph when he made his third attempt, which was the final attempt and then he plummeted into the lake. At that point, it didn’t matter as Richard had made it into the history books with his company’s invention, which has been described as game-changing.
The real-life Iron Man suit is made of six micro gas turbines that are kerosene-fueled and which offer 22kg of thrust. The jet suit is said to depend on the movement of the human body to control the flight path, which means there is no remote control device to steer the suit.
The record was not all about the jet suit; Browning had practiced core strength exercises before he attempted to ensure that he could balance along with being able to hold a position in the air when he was flying. Richard got back on the ground after plummeting into the lake and said that he was delighted to have set a new world record. He said that he had been proud to have been a part of the celebrations of Guinness World Records Day and that it was a pleasure to have the unique creation of Gravity Industries recognized along with being celebrated around the globe.
The Guinness World Records Day brings people together from around the globe and from all walks of life, people who all have one common goal and that is to be amazing, said Craig Glenday, the Guinness World Records Editor In Chief. He went on to say that whether people choose to spin the biggest hula hoop or build along with fly an Iron Man suit, the achievements are from people who are dedicated to being the best.
The Guinness World Records was first launched in 2004 and it went on to become the bestselling book. This year more than 600,000 people around the globe are trying to secure a place in the history books alongside Browning.
Do you believe that maybe we are the aliens we are looking for all this time? Some experts say that people were most likely crossbred with other species. Perhaps from the star system Alpha Centauri — which is one of the closest solar systems to Earth — in the distant past, giving birth to modern humans.
Do you believe that maybe we are the aliens we are looking for all this time? Some experts say that people were most likely crossbred with other species.
Tell Al-Uhaymirit was a modern day in Iraq, in the area of the ancient Sumerian city of Kish. Archaeologists found one of the oldest ancient documents on the planet — the tablet of Kish which is believed to date back to the year 3500 BC.
They discovered that Kish was the first city to have kings following the deluge, beginning with Yushu’s. Yushu’s successor is called Kullassina-bel. This is actually a sentence in Akkadian meaning “All of them were lord”.
This ancient document is the writing of the Sumerians and the Egyptian hieroglyphs for almost one hundred years.
The ability to write this language is one of the first ways in which man differed from the animal kingdom.
We know that humans developed electricity, divided the atom, developed computers, and led man to the moon. We have achieved things that other species still haven’s.
No other species on earth can show this good and unique achievement in such a short period of time. Interestingly, compared to other species on earth, our ‘evolution’ is relatively short.
Can you imagine, if, for some reason, mankind had to return to the jungle, and survive there? Experts say that most of them would not survive for a very long period of time.
Scientists say that people are not very capable to have a big range of environments. Humans are very limited when it comes to our planet.
People, unlike animals, have fascinating intelligence. Biologists have found the contrast between human physiology and that of other animals on earth. Experts say that compared to other species on earth, humans are rather strange. For example, a baby giraffe when is born is able to walk and function almost independently. A human baby can not, which makes us quite helpless. We are born before being neurologically ready for life.
Human beings did not evolve alongside other lifeforms on Earth.
The book called ‘Humans are not from Earth: a scientific evaluation of the evidence’ is basically a resume of theories mostly against man’s evolution on Earth. In the book written by Dr. Ellis Silver, you can see him going through an evaluation of thirteen leading hypothesis and seventeen factors which suggest HUMANS ARE NOT FROM EARTH.
According to Dr. Ellis, humans might suffer from back pain because our species initially evolved on another planet with a lower gravity. It is strange that newborns have large heads and make it difficult for mothers to give birth, which can result in fatalities for both mother and child.
So what do you think, where do we come from?
There are millions of people around the globe who ‘feel’ that they do not belong on Earth.
Dr. Ellis says that “mankind may have evolved on a different planet, and we may have been brought here as a highly developed species. Maybe the Earth is a prison planet since we seem to be naturally violent species and we’re here until we learn to behave ourselves.”
Dr. Ellis thinks that mankind did not evolve from that particular strain of life, but was transported to Earth (as fully evolved Homo sapiens) between 60,000 and 200,000 years ago.
Where did Rh negative blood come from?
Is it possible to explain this by a rather controversial theory? A theory which suggests that humanity isn’t, in fact, one race, but a hybridized species.
Sepehr thinks that when one race dies, another has taken its place. With a few holding on to the memories and knowledge of the past race.
People think that we have discovered some of the great truths of science and technology. We are in fact only just beginning to rediscover the profound wisdom of past civilizations. Sepher thinks that we are like an awakening Species with Amnesia, learning to reclaim our forgotten past.

Scientists want to clone 50,000-year-old Cave lion cub in Jurassic Park-style experiment
Scientists want to clone 50,000-year-old Cave lion cub in Jurassic Park-style experiment
After a 50,000-year-old cave lion was found perfectly preserved in Siberia, scientists are now thinking about cloning the ancient lion in hopes to bring the species back to life.
The cave lion (Panthera leo spelaea) is a subspecies of feline that inhabited the European and Asian continent 50,000 years ago.
Today it is completely extinct, but a discovery in Russia has just opened the door to the possibility of resurrecting the species through cloning.
The body has been frozen for 50,000 years in the permafrost of the tundra that surrounds the Tirekhtykh River, in the Russian province of Yakutia.
The extreme cold of that region has served to keep the body in an impressive state.
Not only does it preserve all its bones, but also the skin and a large part of the soft tissues.
Scientists argue that the cub was between six and eight weeks old when it died due to unknown reasons. Experts hope that the cub’s teeth will reveal more about its age.
Dr. Albert Protopopov, head of the department of paleontology at the Yakutia Academy of Sciences believes that the specimen could give enough DNA samples to clone the species and resuscitate it, as scientists have been wanting to resurrect other species.
Cave lions were once considered the largest ‘big’ cats on the surface of the planet, living in extremely cold regions in the northern hemisphere before they were wiped out.
Speaking to the Siberian times, Dr. Protopopov said: “That means that the cubs were not younger than 25,000 years old. Previously the youngest date for the cubs was 12,000, the time when the cave lions become extinct.”
‘We made a CT scan and saw that their teeth had not appeared yet. Based on a comparison with African lions, we concluded that they were younger than one month, most likely between 1 and 2 weeks old.’
This discovery was made two years after the same experts found two newborn cave lion cubs called Uyan and Dina. At the time of the discovery, Dr. Protopopov said that compared to modern lion cubs, Uyan and Dina were very small, maybe a week or two old.
“The eyes were not quite open, they have baby teeth and not all had appeared,’ said Dr. Protopopov.
Experts are still unsure as to why the species became extinct. However, one theory suggests that the population of cave bears and deer – one source of prey – caused them to die out.
If you discovered your very own planet while scanning the night's sky of a Friday evening because you're not cool enough to hang out with the other kids down Kenton Wreck park, what would you call it?
Would you name it SusieQ1989 after your childhood sweetheart? What about Planet McPlanetyFace, the obvious option? Or there's Planet Zorg, simply because it sounds all Sci-Fi-esque and after all, the only reason to find new planets is to hopefully discover cool, sexy alien species and breed with, war with, or break bread with them. Possibly all three if you really fancy it.
However, a team of astronomers in the US has discovered a new planet, and they've called it OGLE-2016-BLG-1190Lb. Presumably the Ogle is in reference to the amount of time they spent ogling the night's sky. 2016 is probably the year and 1190lb the weight, but with BLG we can only presume or make stuff up.
Credit: Creative Commons
What also might be made up is the notion that OGLE-2016-BLG-1190Lb is even a planet, the reason being that it's so big astronomers aren't sure it even falls under the category of planetary orbital object, otherwise known as a planet. In a report published through Cornell University Library, the scientists said:
"We report the discovery of OGLE-2016-BLG-1190Lb, which is likely to be the first Spitzer microlensing planet in the Galactic bulge/bar, an assignation that can be confirmed by two epochs of high-resolution imaging of the combined source-lens baseline object.
"The planet's mass M_p= 13.4+-0.9 M_J places it right at the deuterium burning limit, i.e., the conventional boundary between 'planets' and 'brown dwarfs'."
Credit: PA
Earth: probably a planet
(Credit: Creative Commons)
Confusing as that undoubtedly is, the report went on to say: "Its existence raises the question of whether such objects are really 'planets' (formed within the disks of their hosts) or 'failed stars' (low mass objects formed by gas fragmentation).
"This question may ultimately be addressed by comparing disk and bulge/bar planets, which is a goal of the Spitzer microlens programme."
Essentially, therefore, the question as to whether a massive object in the universe is a planet or a brown dwarf boils down to whether the object was formed through gas fragmentation or within a host, a bit like in Alien.
Deep space probe, interstellar explorer, and envoy to alien civilisations, Voyager 1 has already racked up an impressive resume to which songwriter can now be added. Using data from the unmanned spacecraft, Dr Domenico Vicinanza, of Anglia Ruskin University and GEANT, and Dr Genevieve Williams, of the University of Exeter, have created a musical composition to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the pathfinding mission.
In 1619, Johannes Kepler published his treatise Harmonices Mundi, in which he combined his astronomical data about the orbit of the planets with his ideas about the geometric harmony of the universe to create what is commonly known as the Music of the Spheres. On November 13 at the NASA Booth at the SC17 Supercomputing Conference in Denver, Colorado, a 21st century equivalent will make its world premiere.
The three-minute number was created using a process known as data sonification, where the data about protons, alpha particles, and heavier nuclei in space from Voyager's Low-Energy Charged Particle (LECP) telescope and spacecraft trajectory were used to create melody, harmony and orchestration. The information was collected by the probe from 1977 until this month with each 26-day period converted into one note. The composition includes the moment when Voyager entered interstellar spacein 2012.
The solemn main melody played by the second violins is based on the cosmic ray count, which changes over to flute, piccolo and glockenspiel at the 2012 mark. Meanwhile, piano and French horns double the violins to mark the flybys of Jupiter and Saturn, where the cosmic ray count fluctuated as they passed close by the gas giants. The passage through the heliopause is a key change from C major to E flat major with an alternation of orchestration and harmony.
"Our orchestra score is more than just inspired by one of the most successful space missions of all time, it is shaped entirely by Voyager 1's incredible journey," says Vicinanza. "Data sonification can play an important role in helping to share scientific discoveries and we hope that by converting 40 years of data into music, listeners will be able to hear aspects of Voyager 1's journey that are perhaps not so obvious when looking at graphs of data."

Voyager 1 is one of the two deep space probes sent by NASA to study the outer planets and the frontiers of the Solar System. The 722 -kg (1,590-lb) spacecraft was launched on September 5, 1977 and is powered by three radiothermal generators. In 1979, it flew by Jupiter and in 1980 it visited Saturn. As it did so, the giant planets sent Voyager on a one-way slingshot trajectory toward interstellar space at a speed of 17.043 km/s (38,120 mph) relative to the Sun.
An excerpt of the Voyager 1 music can be heard in the video below.

Websites have been set up for people to log extraterrestrial spots, and there are several every year across Birmingham and the Black Country
By Isolde Walters
The X-Files might be off the television now, but it would appear UFO sightings remain very much a thing in the West Midlands.
Websites have been set up for people to log extraterrestrial spots, and there are several every year across Birmingham, the Black Country and the wider area.
Some may scoff but hundreds of people are convinced they have had such encounters.
Here are the 11 out-of-this-world UFO sightings taken from these sites which might just have you believing there really is something out there…
1) "We thought it was a burning plane”
UFO witness Lisa was in the front garden of her Solihull house when she saw an orange flickering ball in the sky.
“My immediate thought was that it looked like a plane on fire, but it clearly wasn’t.
“It moved far too fast to be a plane - we live near the flight path so we are used to seeing planes. I watched it for probably only a few seconds and saw as it travelled across the sky, not down, reduced in size and then disappeared.”
She was convinced that the mysterious aircraft was proof of life on other planets.
2) The stargazer who saw something he couldn’t explain
Amateur astronomer Adam trained his telescope on Jupiter to watch a satellite trail across the sky and saw something he had never seen in 18 years of skygazing.
“Suddenly a white light flew across the sky at a speed I have never seen before in any man-made tech. I didn’t hear a boom as expected with such speed, just a faint hum. It was no meteor - it was also very low and the light was very bright. I saw it for three seconds before it had travelled across the entire sky and out of sight.”
Adam knew he had witnessed extraterrestrial life, but never told anyone, for fear that he would not be believed.
3) A cigarette and an alien
Late one night, Errol was smoking a cigarette in the garden with his partner Danni. They looked up to see an object hurtling through the sky towards them.
“It was not a plane or a helicopter or a Chinese lantern. There was no sound and it was hard to focus on it because it was so bright.”
Errol and Danni rushed inside, locked the door and watched as the mysterious object floated off.
4) The little girl and the black shadows
This encounter sounds like the beginning of a sci fi blockbuster. Mr Hulin tucked his granddaughter into bed but two hours later he heard her crying for her mother.
“She said that nine or ten black shadows were over her bed. There was one white ghost with no mouth but this one was friendly. The black shadows were trying to hold her hand so she went under the quilt. She said this made them angry. She says they left in a pink car with no lights on it and went into the sky. She said, ‘I don’t know what planet they went to’.
“This was very unusual for a four-year-old to say. My granddaughter is very intelligent and we all agreed she did not make it up.”
Too much sugar or a terrifying encounter with the paranormal? We’ll never know.
5) The yellow full moon UFO
Waiting for the lift down from his 16th floor flat, Scott looked out of the window and saw a UFO.
“There was a huge light in the sky. It was the size of a full moon moving slowly towards Wolverhampton. It was bright yellow in colour and almost perfectly round.”
6) Is that a firework… or a spaceship?
The day after bonfire night you may expect to see some fireworks but Julian Lewis was adamant that what he saw driving home on 6 November 2010 was no firework.
“I saw this bright fireball in the sky. It was so bright up there it was scary. I stopped the car in excitement and shock. It just stopped and stayed right above me very high up.
“It got brighter and brighter and was giving off rays, very much like the sun does. May I add that at no time did this thing make any sound.”
Julian jumped into his car and drove home, before writing up his encounter on a UFO sightings website.
7) The spaceship with football stadium spot lights
In this instance, a man called Phill had just passed his driving test and had treated himself to a new car. He and a friend parked outside his house and saw what he assumed was a helicopter in the sky. He turned his lights on to their brightest setting and watched the aircraft.
“It was triangular in shape with a bar of white lights that looked like football ground spot lights across the front. The bottom of the craft had a pattern of colours that kept changing from red, green and blue.”
Phill and his friend watched in horror as the aircraft slowly twisted and sped off across the night’s sky, leaving him convinced that it was not-of-this-world.
“To this day I can’t think what earthly thing it could have been,” he said.
8) The fighter jet spaceships that ruined Emmerdale
A poster called Mike was settling down to watch Emmerdale when a rumbling sound like a jet shook his house.
“The sound blasted over the TV and the whole house felt like it trembled. I looked at my wife and said, ‘these are no jets’. I took my camera out to the front of the house and there were four red UFOs going over the street.”
Mike snapped as the strange planes zoomed over his head. Are these grainy pictures evidence that the aliens are among us?
9) The mysterious sphere that floats above Sandwell hospital
It seems like aliens visit hospitals too.
In this instance, a spherical metallic blue object was seen hovering over Sandwell hospital.
A spotter called Darren explained: “At first I thought it was a helicopter but there wasn’t any sound. So then I thought it was a balloon, but it wasn’t moving in this light wind.”
The real question is: why are aliens visiting Sandwell hospital?
Sitting at his desk in a Redditch office, Neil heard a colleague shouting, “UFO!” He followed him outside to see a large, long tube darting across the sky.
“It was as high as a normal passenger jet. But it had no wings or tail, just a long metal tube, rounded at both ends.”
He took a picture on his phone but the object was mysteriously invisible in the photograph.
“I can’t explain what I saw, even though I want to dismiss it. Then I heard local reports over the weekend that there were several sightings in Bromsgrove on the same day.”
11) Graveyard sighting
Walking through a graveyard in Kidderminster, Katherine noticed two street lights suspended across the churchyard.
“When I got closer, I realised that the lights were separate and were moving away. It was quite misty but the lights were clearly visible for about a minute.
“They were completely round with a triangle of light coming out of the back. There was no noise.”
Katherine fled from the ghostly vision and knew she had become one of the few people to witness a UFO.
If “the truth” is truly out there, then History is banking on viewers wanting to get to the bottom of where that search for the truth really began with new UFO drama series Blue Book. Executive produced by Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis, the ten-episode series has found its female lead in Laura Mennell (The Man in the High Castle) who will star opposite Aidan Gillen in the scripted drama series. Robert Stromberg (Maleficent) will direct the first two episodes of the series; created and written on by David O’Leary, with Sean Jablonski serving as showrunner.
Here’s a brief overview of what Blue Book is all about:
“Blue Book chronicles the true top secret U.S. Air Force-sponsored investigations into UFO-related phenomena in the 1950s and ’60s, known as “Project Blue Book.” Gillen plays Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a brilliant astrophysicist, family man, and UFO skeptic who is recruited as the Chief Scientific Advisor to “Project Blue Book.” Mennell will play Allen’s wife, Mimi Hynek, who is seemingly a content stay-at-home housewife but has plans to become much more.”
O’Leary and Jablonski will co-executive produce the series alongside Zemeckis; and Jack Rapke and Jackie Levine from Compari Entertainment. A+E Studios and Compari Entertainment (a division of Zemeckis’ ImageMovers) will handle overall production.
Mennell’s series responsibilities could be keeping her pretty busy very soon: she also co-stars opposite Ron Livingston in Peter Farrelly‘s comedy series Loudermilkfor the Audience Network. Though Blue Book is her first priority, if Loudermilk is renewed for a second season then she could be available for more episodes if shooting schedules permit. Mennellis is also set to recur in Amazon’s The Man In the High Castle.
Along with Blue Book, History has begun casting its second scripted series: The Breach: Inside the Impeachment of Bill Clinton, from producer R.J. Cutler.
As someone trained in mystical thought, I believe there is a case for the consciousness model when considering brief UFO sightings.
When the idea of consciousness began entering the research conversation in Ufology, it caused a bit of an uproar and there has been mixed feelings to the topic. Many people in the UFO research were put off by the squishy notion of telepathy and psychic phenomena being a significant component in the UFO research dialogue.
If you talk to folks familiar with the Close Encounter Five philosophy, the notion of communication with off-worlders and UFO crafts that are “alive in an artificial intelligence context” is a very real consideration.
Close Encounter Five (CE-5) is classified as “Human to Alien” initiated communication. The concept behind CE-5 is that aliens have highly refined telepathic abilities. Likewise their craft seem to be highly advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capable of telepathic communication. The CE-5 folks have protocols for reaching out with their meditative minds and telepathically touching the aliens or their AI crafts. This has been going on for some time, in the form of individual efforts and CE-5 group gatherings.
I’ve been reading UFO sighting reports on a weekly basis for nearly five years. One thing I read repeatedly is descriptions like, “There it was for a few seconds and it winked out or it suddenly disappeared.”
Think of this scenario: Someone is outside for a smoke or out walking the dog. They are relaxed and peaceful, letting go of the day’s stresses and challenges. The sky is clear, and the stars are shining in a majestic display. A situation like this has a deeply calming effect on most people.
Then bam! This individual has an amazing UFO sighting experience for a few seconds or perhaps for as long as a minute, then the phenomenon just disappears. The event is astonishing enough to prompt the individual to report it to NUFORC (National UFO Reporting Center) or MUFON (Mutual UFO Network).
As a shaman, I see a familiar metaphysical occurrence. It’s something I like to call “a flash perception.” Think of it as a few moments of incredibly intuitive clarity.
Our day-to-day mindset is what’s called our ordinary mind. When we have one of these flash perceptions, our consciousness shifts from the ordinary mind to an altered state of consciousness. In effect, the boundaries of our reality perception stretches a bit.
In this altered state, we might perhaps have a sense of déjà vu, or have a flash of a loved one in peril, or a precognitive burst of some future event. It might even be the creative twinkle of what many in the creative arts call the muse’s “Divine Kiss.”
The bottom line: Ordinary people can and do experience an altered view of reality from time to time. In this unique view, they may perceive things that the ordinary mind can’t comprehend. For example, in a dream state we all experience many things that really made real sense while we were dreaming– but after waking up these things lack conceptualization and words to explain it.
I hypothesize that people in a relaxed state of mind might be occasionally treated to an “intuitive, waking dreamlike event” of an out-of-this-world craft. Is the craft really there? Yes!
But the craft might be just out of our ordinary reality view to see it. Some might be quick to say this sort of event might be just a hallucination, but it’s not.
All human beings have the capacity for having such transcendent experiences. The average person rarely has these events. For the person born with more attuned psychic gifts, these events happen much more often. For those trained as mystical adepts, these altered states can be induced with deeper states of meditation. Some tribal practices use ceremonial medicinal
herbs to induce such states, but you don’t have to be under the influence of a psychotropic substance to have this sort of experience.
My point boils down to this: Some UFO sighting experiences are not seen with the naked eye but rather with the intuitive mind’s eye during brief periods of intuitive clarity.

Taurid Meteor Shower 2017: When, Where & How to See It This Weekend
Taurid Meteor Shower 2017: When, Where & How to See It This Weekend
By Elizabeth Howell, Space.com Contributor
While the Taurid meteor shower doesn't have a lot of shooting stars to offer, the few that will streak across the sky in the coming days will be bright, spectacular fireballs. The North Taurid meteor shower is at its peak now!
Skywatchers in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres will have two different peak viewing times. But the estimated dates have some wiggle room, because meteor rates will be consistently low throughout the meteor shower. Typically, the Taurids produce only a handful of visible meteors per hour.
In 2017, the North Taurid meteor shower will peak overnight on Nov. 11-12 for viewers in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the South Taurid meteor shower peaked overnight on Oct. 10, according to the American Meteor Society. However, viewers in both hemispheres can still see meteors through late November.
The Taurids are associated with Comet Encke. As this object orbits the sun, it leaves a trail of comet crumbs in its wake. In some years, when Jupiter's orbit brings it close to the comet's trail, the gas giant's gravity nudges the comet particle stream toward Earth, so more meteors are visible to observers here. Astronomers call this an "outburst." That isn't expected to happen this year, but the latest predictions suggest that an outburst will happen in 2019, NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke told Space.com.
Most meteor showers come from tiny fragments that burn up in Earth's atmosphere, but calculations indicate that Comet Encke's debris could produce meteors big enough to survive the trip to the ground. These meteorites have not been discovered yet, Cooke said, adding that such a discovery would be a "holy grail of meteorites." No one knows how big a Taurid meteorite might be, but Cooke said the comet chunks are estimated to weigh a few ounces.
When to see them
Cooke said that it can be hard to pick the best day to look for the Taurids, because the meteor shower is visible for several weeks. The best results will happen in the early morning (just before dawn) from any dark location. On peak viewing days, there may be only a few more meteors per hour than on other days, so the difference is hardly noticeable, he said.
"The rates are low, so be prepared to look for a while," Cooke said.
Observers may also spot some stray shooting stars that are unrelated to the Taurids. These will appear to originate somewhere other than the constellation Taurus and will travel in random directions through the night sky. Moonlight won't overly interfere with the peak of the northern Taurids, but watch for it at other times around the peak (and try to time your observations for when the moon is not in the sky).
Where to look
The Taurids are visible practically anywhere on Earth, except for the South Pole. They appear to originate in the constellation Taurus the bull. To find Taurus, look for the constellation Orion and then peer to the northeast to find the red star Aldebaran, the star in the bull's eye.
Don't look directly at Taurus to find meteors; the shooting stars will be visible all over the night sky. Make sure to move your gaze around the nearby constellations. Meteors closer to the radiant have shorter trails and are more difficult to spot. If you look only at Taurus, you might miss the shooting stars with the most spectacular trails.
What causes the Taurids?
The Taurids come from Comet Encke, a short-term periodic comet that orbits the sun about once every 3.3 years. It was first spotted by Pierre Mechain in 1786 and was first recognized as a periodic comet in the 1800s by Johann Franz Encke.
As the comet moves around the solar system, it leaves behind bits of material that are called meteoroids. If those comet chunks enter the Earth's atmosphere, they are called meteors. The friction they encounter while speeding through the Earth's atmosphere heats them up, sometimes making them visible from the ground. Those chunks that reach the ground, if ever discovered, would be called meteorites.
How to get the best view
Meteor showers require no special equipment to view. Just travel to an area that has few lights, away from major cities. Get comfortable on your back, staring straight up at the sky. This will let you view more meteors than by staring in one direction.

The Millennium Falcon may have made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, but apparently its stealth mode leaves something to be desired. Han Solo's famous "Star Wars" spaceship is hidden in plain sight — at least for viewers browsing the satellite views provided by Google Maps.
The Falcon's landing zone is surrounded by shipping containers on the edge of Longcross Film Studios in Chertsey, Surrey, according to The Sun. The English studio has been involved in films including "World War Z," "Thor 2," "Skyfall" and "Fast & Furious 6," its website reads. The Falcon seems to have first been spotted back in June by eagle-eyed Pete Hibbert, according to Jedi News.
Check out the Falcon in the map below (you'll notice it has been helpfully labeled, and even has a collection of reviews from some online jokesters):
At the time of publication, the Millennium Falcon is rated 4.6 stars.
Han Solo's famous flier is partially covered by a tarp, but is clearly recognizable, and looks ready to fly right into "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," which comes out in theaters Dec. 15. A recent trailer for the film shows a reunion between Luke Skywalker and the Falcon — both much older than their last encounter in the first "Star Wars" trilogy. An upcoming moviespotlighting Han Solo's origins is scheduled for May 25, 2018.
Supernova's Expanding 'Echo' of Light Captured by Hubble Telescope
Supernova's Expanding 'Echo' of Light Captured by Hubble Telescope
By Calla Cofield, Space.com Senior Writer
It did not go quietly into the night: An exploding star left behind an echo of light, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.
In a sequence of images captured over the course of two years, Hubble scientists tracked a ring of light as it appeared to expand outward into space. This light came from an initial stellar explosion — which was first identified three years ago — reflecting off a nearby gas cloud, according to a statement from the Space Telescope Science Institute's Hubble site.
"Voices reverberating off mountains and the sound of footsteps bouncing off walls are examples of an echo," the statement said. "Space has its own version of an echo. It's not made with sound, but with light and occurs when light bounces off dust clouds." [The Hubble Telescope's 10 Most Amazing Discoveries]
The initial explosion was a supernova called SN 2014J, discovered on Jan. 21, 2014, in the nearby galaxy M82, located 11.4 million light-years away from Earth. Stars larger than the sun turn into supernovas when they run out of fuel, leading to a chain reaction of energetic events including the explosion of material.
"So far, astronomers have spotted only 15 light echoes around supernovae outside our Milky Way galaxy," according to the statement. "Light-echo detections from supernovae are rarely seen, because they must be nearby for a telescope to resolve them."

Here's What You Really Need to Know About That Hot Plume Under Antarctica
Don't believe the headlines that say there's a disaster coming.
DAVE MOSHER, BUSINESS INSIDER
Antarctica today takes a lot of heat from above, thanks to two hundred years of carbon-belching human activity and the warming this has caused.
An increasing number of researchers also think the frozen Southern Continent faces significant warming from below: Hot rock pluming upward through Earth's mantle, leaking heat through the crust, and melting the bottoms of Antarctic ice sheets.
The effect, first proposed 30 years ago, seems especially strong in West Antarctica, where ice sheet losses are most dramatic and contributing to sea-level rise. But few scientists believed this was happening, at least initially.
"I thought it was crazy," Hélène Seroussi, a climatologist and ice researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a press release. "I didn't see how we could have that amount of heat and still have ice on top of it."

However, a new study by Seroussi and others now backs up the idea of a hot mantle plume - and the melting it causes - with advanced computer modelling.
The work was published September 1 in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth.
Rising from the depths
Earth's internal heat is always warming up the ground, including rock under ice sheets all over the planet. While this partially melts them from below, snow and ice accumulation on top is usually enough to balance out these losses.
Over the years, however, researchers who study Antarctic ice melt have detailed an anomaly at West Antarctica. There, ice sheet thinning is more drastic than anywhere else on the continent, according to satellite data.

Since the industrial revolution, the North and South Poles have warmed at a rate many times faster than other locations on Earth. In Antarctica, this is melting ice sheets from above and pooling water on top of them - possibly helping carve off Delaware-size icebergs.
But a warming climate does not fully explain Antarctica's mounting ice loss. So in recent years, researchers have looked deeper for an answer.
Hiding under the ice
One line of research has discovered, documented, and even drilled into and explored a vast system of sub-glacial lakes and rivers.
This water helps lubricate the movement of ice sheets from the snowy mountains to the sea - and certain parts of the Southern Continent, where there's a lot of sub-glacial water - are moving and melting faster than others.

Scientists have also dug into the mystery of a bulge in Earth's crust below West Antarctica, called the Marie Byrd Land Dome. At first, it was thought the crust was thicker there. But earthquake-like seismic measurements disproved that idea.
Something else is buoying the region, and recent seismic imaging - essentially 3D-radar for Earth's crust and mantle - suggests there's a warm plume of rock below West Antarctica. (Just as sound waves travel slower through liquids than solids, seismic waves slow down when encountering hotter, more gooey, and less-dense rock.)
Measurements suggest a hot plume of mantle rock below West Antarctica.
(Helene Seroussi et al./JGR Solid Earth; Business Insider)
Researchers plugged in all of the known physics about the mantle, Antarctica, and its ice sheets - including their changing altitude, movement, friction caused by that movement, melting rates, and more - and produced dozens of simulations, according to NASA JPL.
Those simulations showed that heat spilling from a hot mantle plume could be up to three times greater than it is for a normal, non-volcanic chunk of mantle below the US. And compared to mantle below Yellowstone, the heat output could be 75 percent that of the volcanically active region.
When the researchers compared that heat output to basal (or bottom) melt rates in Antarctica, no places matched - except for West Antarctica. At that location, a crack or rift in the crust may be allowing heat to rapidly escape upward, the researchers wrote in their study.
"Without a plume-like heating source," they said, "our simulations show that intrinsic heating and crustal sources do not provide enough energy to generate significant amounts of basal meltwater."
Most of these “slugs” are actually snails that have lost their shells and gained new characteristics through evolution. For example, sacoglossans are sometimes called “solar-powered sea slugs” because they use chloroplasts from the algae they eat in their own tissue.
PROOF OF TIME TRAVEL? BIZARRE CLAIMS NUCLEAR BOMB WAS DETONATED IN INDIA 12,000 YEARS AGO
PROOF OF TIME TRAVEL? BIZARRE CLAIMS NUCLEAR BOMB WAS DETONATED IN INDIA 12,000 YEARS AGO
A NUCLEAR bomb blast killed half a million people in India 12,000 years ago, according to shocking claims being made.
Videos uploaded by conspiracy theory and UFO websites suggest there is evidence of the ancient blast happening in a desert region near Jodhpur.
Website ufosightingsdaily.com was the latest to link to one of the videos today.
The “evidence” is alleged to be based on “writings” in ancient texts and an area where high levels of radiation were allegedly detected.
Conspiracy theory website Disclose.tv said: “Hindu texts dating from thousands of years ago seem to suggest that some kind of highly advanced weapon resembling an atomic bomb was set off on the Earth some twelve thousand of years ago.”
The theory is based on alleged passages from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, Sanskrit epics said to be written in around the 8th or 9th century BC, about the Kurukshetra War and battle between Rama and the demon Ravana respectively.
Disclose.tv added: “Could an atomic bomb have gone off on Earth 12,000 years ago? Some of the passages from the Mahabharata suggest a nuclear conflict.”
The website points to these allegedly translated extracts from the texts: “A single projectile charged with all the power in the Universe…An incandescent column of smoke and flame as bright as 10,000 suns, rose in all its splendor…it was an unknown weapon, an iron thunderbolt, a gigantic messenger of death which reduced to ashes an entire race.
“The corpses were so burned as to be unrecognisable. Their hair and nails fell out, pottery broke without any apparent cause, and the birds turned white.
“After a few hours, all foodstuffs were infected. To escape from this fire, the soldiers threw themselves into the river.”
The theory suggests the discovery of an area of high radiation in the 1990s and several corpses found in an ancient city back up the texts.
The claims are that on the eastern edge of the great Thar desert, near the ancient city of Jodhpur, in the 1990s, an area “where radioactivity is so great that residents have long had high rates of cancer and birth defects.”
It suggests that nearby several skeletons were unearthered in an ancient city whiuch appeared to have perished together in the streets.
In some reports alleged Indian historian, Kisari Mohan Ganguli, said: “Indian sacred writings are full of such descriptions, which sound like an atomic blast as experienced in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”
The theory claims there is evidence of a nuclear blast crater – the Lonar Crater near Mumbai, which cannot be explained.
Conspiracy theorists have claimed time travellers or aliens could be explanations for how advanced technology developed in the 20th century was available 12,000 years ago.
Disclose.tv said: “How the ancient Indian powers at the time developed nuclear weapons is a mystery although of course no records exist showing anything like the levels of technology needed to develop these kinds of weapons.”
But, despite appearing on many conspiracy theory and UFO websites, the story has been exposed as “fake news”.
Debunking website skeptoid.com investigated the claims.
It found no evidence of the reported passages in translated versions of the texts.
It also found no evidence outside of conspiracy forums to suggest the area of high radiation had been discovered in the desert.
The images of the ancient city and skeletons used with the reports were found to have actually been taken at the ancient cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa, which are around 300 miles away from the alleged site.
Skeptoid.com said: ” If this was a nuclear war, it was practically a nationwide theatre.
“Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa are both about 500 km from Jodhpur, one to the north and one to the west. None of these places are anywhere near each other.
“Sadly for the legend, there is nothing remotely like this story in any archaeological publications.
“Archaeological information about the excavations of Mohenjo-Daro, Harappa, and other Indus Valley sites is widely available online and in print, and there is simply no such thing as radioactive skeletons or skeletons in large numbers or holding hands or sprawled in any way.”
Skeptoid.com said the Lonar Crater was 470 miles from the alleged site and had been dated back to being formed 52,000 years ago, long before the alleged ancient bomb blast.
Skeptoid.com added: “It looks like every part of this story is fabricated.”
NASA’s $1 Billion Jupiter Probe Just Sent Back Stunning New Photos Of Jupiter
NASA’s $1 Billion Jupiter Probe Just Sent Back Stunning New Photos Of Jupiter
Traveling above Jupiter at more than 130,000 miles per hour, NASA’s $1 billion Juno probe took its ninth set of stunning flyby images on October 24. But the sun slipped between the giant planet and Earth for more than a week, blocking the spacecraft from beaming home its precious bounty of data.
Now that the conjunction is over, however, new raw image data from Juno’s ninth perijove — as the spacecraft’s high-speed flybys are called — has poured in. Researchers posted it all online on Tuesday, and a community of amateurs and professionals has been busily processing the data to yield colorful and stunning new pictures of Jupiter.
“Brand new Jupiter pics from @NASAJuno Perijove 09! What a blimmin’ gorgeous/diabolical planet,” Seán Doran, a UK-based graphic artist who regularly processes NASA images, tweeted on Tuesday.
Below are some fresh, close-up images of Jupiter, along with other unbelievable views captured from earlier perijoves.
In the most recent flyby, as with the previous eight, Juno’s flyby started over Jupiter’s north pole.
The spacecraft then swept within a few thousand miles of the gas giant, capturing stunning high-resolution views of its cloud tops.
At its closest approach to Jupiter during each flyby, the robot briefly becomes the fastest human-made object in the solar system, reaching speeds of around 130,000 miles per hour.
Then Juno flew back out into deep space, passing over Jupiter’s South Pole on its exit. Churning storms at the poles constantly change their appearance.
Researchers upload the raw data sent by the probe to the mission’s website.
There, enthusiasts take the drab, mostly gray image data and process it all into true-to-life color photos.
Many snapshots of Jupiter take on an artistic quality.
Others dazzle with their detail of the planet’s thick cloud bands and powerful storms. Jupiter is made up predominantly of hydrogen. The simple, basic gas, a prime ingredient on the sun, accounts for 90 percent of the atmosphere. Nearly 10 percent is composed of helium.
The planet’s atmosphere is a turbulent mess of hydrogen and helium gases. The atmosphere of Jupiter is the largest planetary atmosphere in the Solar System. It is mostly made of molecular hydrogen and helium in roughly solar proportions; other chemical compounds are present only in small amounts and include methane, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and water. Some of the tempests are large enough to swallow planet Earth — or at least a good chunk of it.
There are also traces of molecules like ammonia, methane, sulfur, and water, which give the clouds different colors and properties.
The mixture sometimes creates features that look like faces (as seen on the left in this image).
Other times, shining-white clouds fill up most of a band. With an average temperature of minus 234 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 145 degrees Celsius), Jupiter is frigid even in its warmest weather. Unlike Earth, whose temperature varies as one moves closer to or farther from the equator, Jupiter’s temperature depends more on height above the surface.
Many cloud bands have features called chevrons. These atmospheric disturbances blow at several hundreds of miles per hour and sometimes zig-zag through a band, or punch through into others.
In this older view of Jupiter, from Juno’s eighth perijove, two cloud bands battle for dominance — one of which contains a swirling storm many times larger than a hurricane on Earth.
The spacecraft will continue to document Jupiter for as long as NASA can keep it going. But not forever.
A Taiwanese businessman claimed he had caught a doughnut-shaped UFO on camera in south-west China.
Salesman John Chen said he took some picturesque shots of the famous Lake Dian after attending a trade show in Yunnan Province on November 1.
Later on, the 44-year-old and his sister-in-law were shocked to spot a mysterious ring-shaped object in sky when they were looking at one picture at home in Taipei.
Mr Chen, above, sends the pictures to Philip Mantle, a leading UFO expert, for analysis as the flying object has a ridged shape that looks like a doughnut (under).
The object in question has ridged sides and a hole in the middle, and is similar to the shape of a doughnut.
Mr Chen decided to find a UFO expert in a bid to find out what it could be.
Philip Mantle, who is said to be a leading British UFO researcher, told Mr Chen that he could not explain what the flying 'doughnut' was. Mr Mantle called the incident an 'open verdict'.
However, Mr Chen said: 'It just has to be a UFO. It's a strange doughnut shape in the sky.
'The strange thing is I didn't see it at the time. It was my wife's sister who spotted them. She said there was something in the pictures and I just thought she was joking.'
Businessman John Chen took a few pictures of Lake Dian in China the day he attended a trade show (above). Only when he returned to Taiwan, he was told that there was a UFO in it (under)
Other pictures of Lake Dian, however, did not show the strange looking object in the sky
Mr Chen then checked with his colleagues. They shared the photos that they had taken on the day, but his colleagues did not capture any strange object in the sky.
Upon receiving photos sent by Mr Chen, British UFO expert Philip Mantle doubted for the legitimacy of the images.
'What I can say is that the photographer in question here has always cooperated and seems to be genuinely puzzled by the images on his photos.
He did not see the alleged UFO at the time of taking the photos. Instead it was a relative that noticed them when he posted them on social media.'
Mantel concluded that there was no proof that the pictures were a hoax but the object could also be 'some air born debris that has been caught by the camera;
'More study needs to be done on these photos before any definite conclusion can be reached, so in the meantime it remains an open verdict,' he added.

NASA DISCOVERS GIANT MANTLE PLUME THAT’S MELTING ANTARCTICA FROM BELOW
Antarctica has been in the news a lot recently, with gloomy tales of the astonishing icy continent melting and collapsing because of the effects of climate change.

SUPER VOLCANO DISCOVERED UNDERNEATH ANTARCTICA
However, according to scientists in one particular area of the continent something else is at work too. Researchers working for NASA have discovered that there is a massive super-volcano underneath Marie Byrd Land in West Antarctica which is generating almost as much heat as the infamous Yellowstone supervolcano and effectively melting the ice from underneath the Earth.
The research team have uncovered an enormous amount of hot rock underneath Marie Byrd Land which lies between the gigantic Ross Ice Shelf and the Ross Sea. According to the team, the heat surrounding this area is creating huge lakes and rivers underneath the ice sheet. This heat, they claim, is being generated by a mantle plume. Mantle plumes are part of the anatomy of a super volcano which bring hot material from the interior to the Earth to the surface. The region directly surrounding these mantle plumes is known as a hot spot and can cause a great deal of geographical instability. According to the team, it is likely that the mantle plume is responsible for the ever changing landscape in this particular region on Antarctica and is probably responsible for its rapid collapse towards the end of the last major Ice Age eleven thousand years ago.
The existence of a blazingly hot mantle plume existing under Marie Byrd land is something which scientists have speculated about for around thirty years because of the unique conditions in this particular area of Antarctica and the domed feature of the landscape there. However, until now there has been no solid evidence to support this idea.
This has all changed because of the work at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who commenced the project because they were interested to know what was causing the instability in the region. According to the leader of the project Hélène Seroussi, the team were actually initially sceptical about the idea that a mantle plume could be causing the unique conditions. She said that she found the idea ‘crazy’. “I didn’t see how we could have that amount of heat and still have ice on top of it, ” she said.
However, the team created a huge number of advanced numerical models to calculate how much heat would need to be generated underneath the thick ice sheet to account for geological anomalies such as the domed appearance of the landscape and the lakes and rivers in the bedrock and eventually they came to the conclusion that there simply had to be a mantle plume in this area.
Once they had come to the conclusion that it was likely that they were dealing with a mantle plume, the team dispatched to Yellowstone to analyse the geothermal heat created by the super volcano and found that it was comparable to the amount of heat being generated in Marie Byrd Land. At Yellowstone, around 200 milliwatts is generated per square meter every hour by the heat of the volcano. In Marie Byrd land approximately 150 milliwatts is generated in the same space of time. The scientists note that if the supervolcano underneath Antarctica was any hotter then it would certainly melt the ice in the surrounding area.
The team believes that the mantle plume is coming from a rift in the Earth’s crust and that it is likely that this particular rift and mantle plume formed between fifty and a hundred and ten million years ago, prior to the region being covered with ice.
According to the research team, these investigations could prove to be acutely important in the future. As scientists endeavour to understand the nature of the landscape of Antarctica and attempt to
make predictions about how it will evolve and change in the future this kind of information is absolutely essential.
He was on duty as a police officer in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, and had been sent out to locate some loose cattle.
However, he ended up tracking down something he insists was more out of this world when he saw a flying saucer in Burnley Road.
Officer Alan Godfry is a retired police officer who served in the West Yorkshire Metropolitan Police
Mr Godfrey lost around 15 minutes and remains convinced to this day, after undergoing regression, that he was abducted by alien occupants of the craft.
At the time he was interviewed on prime time TV news shows, and to this day it remains the UK's best-known alien abduction account.
Yet, UFO researcher Russ Callaghan, may have found a more earthly explanation for what went on.
Mr Callaghan has discovered something from the history of Todmorden, that was there at the time of the incident, was mobile, but has been over looked by other investigators.
More importantly, he said, it resembles the description given by Mr Godfrey of his "flying saucer."
According to a black and white image of the Todmorden futuro home, with a woman stood next to it, it matches the 20 feet across dimension given by Mr Godfrey in sketches.
Mr Godfrey said he saw "a metallic disc with a dome and a row of windows at the top."
However, he also insists that moments later, as he tried to sketch it, there was a burst of light, and he then found himself driving 100 yards farther up the road, with the UFO now gone.
However, Mr Callaghan discovered that since 1971 there had been a UFO inspired Futura home in Todmorden, and it was still there in 1980.
The plastic-built home resembled a UFO, with several large oval windows around it on the top half.
What's more, the building was mobile, and was transported around the town on the back of a truck.
Waterside Plastics
The Todmorden futuro home in the Watersides Plastics brochure dated 1969.
Mr Callaghan argued that, as it would have been dark at the time of the sighting, it could have been the futura home being moved on a truck that he saw, and mistook for an alien craft.
Mr Callaghan said: "Alan is a great guy, and I know he believes what he says he saw.
"I'm not saying Alan made this up."
However, he said it was a plausible theory that further up the road the futura building was being carried on a lorry, making it appear to be above the road.
Waterside Plastics
A sketch of the UFO Alan Godfrey saw, which Russ Callaghan says resembles the futuro home.
He said: "That is how they moved the building. Does it or does it not look like a flying saucer?
"The futura buildings were small liveable houses, but the documentary makers (about Alan Godfrey's abduction) never remember to mention it was there at the time.
"But it was there and we have got a photo of it, and we have not got a photo of what Alan saw in Burnley Road."
Futurohouse.com is a website dedicated to the quirky futuristic homes, which features a section on the one at Todmorden, which confirms it was moved on a lorry.
Malcolm Stroud said of it: "The house was made by Waterside Plastics in its Waterside Mill, Rochdale Road, Todmorden.
YouTube•WATERSIDE PLASTICS
CASE CLOSED? Did Alan Godfrey see and sketch a futura home (inset)?
That is how they moved the building. Does it or does it not look like a flying saucer?
Russ Callaghan
"The Futuro house was a one off and I understand they only made one. It was exhibited in Todmorden in 1971 for the town's centenary.
"The company went out of business in 1990.
"The house was exhibited outside the Abraham Omerod medical centre (now closed), in the town, near the railway viaduct.
"I have also been told that it functioned as offices for Waterside Plastics for some years."
He said there was a photo of it "peeping out" between Victorian mill buildings when it was being moved on a lorry.
Mr Callaghan also considered if Mr Godfrey just saw a bus with its lights on and got confused in the early-morning darkness.
This was because busses ran along that route at the time, and Mr Godfrey had initially said "I thought I were looking at a bus."
He also considered if it was a council road sweeping vehicle with flashing lights, also mistaken by Mr Godfrey for a UFO, before resting on the futura house theory.
Mr Callaghan was quizzed by other ufologists about what could account for Mr Godfrey's burst of light, missing time, and abduction claims.
Jon Austin
CASE CLOSED: Russ Callaghan delivering his theory at a UFO conference in Hull.
He pointed out that Mr Godfrey's vivid descriptions of what went on inside the craft had only come out after he was regressed by Jenny Randles, a prominent UFO and alien abduction investigator.
He said: "There was no mention of these prior to hypnosis.
"Under hypnosis, he came out with seeing alien beings with light bulb heads, and a black entity.
"But, before in a book, he also tells you he can't say if what he said under hypnosis was real or if he made it up because he has no recollection of these things prior to hypnosis."
BBC
Alan Godfrey interviewed by Frank Bough on BBC Breakfast at height of the media storm.
However, some believe the mystery remains as there were two independent sightings of something strange that morning.
A driver who was on Burnley Road, three miles further out at Cliviger, told of seeing a brilliant white object at the time of Mr Godfrey's sighting, and even contacted Todmorden police.
On top of this, a police patrol from nearby Halifax, searching for stolen motorbikes on Calder Valley moors saw a brilliant blue-white glow descending into the valley towards Todmorden shortly before Mr Godfrey experienced his close encounter.
Mr Godfrey insists what he saw was a flying saucer, and he has recently told all in the new book Who or What Were They?, in which he claims he was hounded from the force over the case.
