Scientists build first map of hidden universe

A team led by astronomers from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy has created the first three-dimensional map of the 'adolescent' Universe, just 3 billion years after the Big Bang. This map, built from data collected from the W. M. Keck Observatory, is millions of light-years across and provides a tantalizing glimpse of large structures in the 'cosmic web' – the backbone of cosmic structure. 

On the largest scales, matter in the Universe is arranged in a vast network of filamentary structures known as the 'cosmic web', its tangled strands spanning hundreds of millions of light-years. Dark matter, which emits no light, forms the backbone of this web, which is also suffused with primordial hydrogen gas left over from the Big Bang. Galaxies like our own Milky Way are embedded inside this web, but fill only a tiny fraction of its volume.

Now a team of astronomers led by Khee-Gan Lee, a post-doc at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, has created a map of hydrogen absorption revealing a three-dimensional section of the universe 11 billions light years away – the first time the cosmic web has been mapped at such a vast distance. Since observing to such immense distances is also looking back in time, the map reveals the early stages of cosmic structure formation when the Universe was only a quarter of its current age, during an era when the galaxies were undergoing a major 'growth spurt'.

The map was created by using faint background galaxies as light sources, against which gas could be seen by the characteristic absorption features of hydrogen. The wavelengths of each hydrogen feature showed the presence of gas at a specific distance from us. Combining all of the measurements across the entire field of view allowed the team a tantalizing glimpse of giant filamentary structures extending across millions of light-years, and paves the way for more extensive studies that will reveal not only the structure of the cosmic web, but also details of its function – the ways that pristine gas is funneled along the web into galaxies, providing the raw material for the formation of galaxies, stars, and planets.

Using the light from faint background galaxies for this purpose had been thought impossible with current telescopes – until Lee carried out calculations that suggested otherwise. To ensure success, Lee and his colleagues obtained observing time at Keck Observatory, home of the two largest and most scientifically productive telescopes in the world.

Although bad weather limited the astronomers to observing for only 4 hours, the data they collected with the LRIS instrument was completely unprecedented. "We were pretty disappointed as the weather was terrible and we only managed to collect a few hours of good data. But judging by the data quality as it came off the telescope, it was clear to me that the experiment was going to work," said Max Plank's Joseph Hennawi, who was part of the observing team.

"The data were obtained using the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck I telescope," Lee said. "With its gargantuan 10m-diameter mirror, this telescope effectively collected enough light from our targeted galaxies that are more than 15 billion times fainter than the faintest stars visible to the naked eye. Since we were measuring the dimming of blue light from these distant galaxies caused by the foreground gas, the thin atmosphere at the summit of Mauna Kea allowed more of this blue light to reach the telescope and be measured by the highly sensitive detectors of the LRIS spectrograph. The data we collected would have taken at least several times longer to obtain on any other telescope."

Their absorption measurements using 24 faint background galaxies provided sufficient coverage of a small patch of the sky to be combined into a 3D map of the foreground cosmic web. A crucial element was the computer algorithm used to create the 3D map: due to the large amount of data, a naïve implementation of the map-making procedure would require an inordinate amount of computing time. Fortunately, team members Casey Stark and Martin White (UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) devised a new fast algorithm that could create the map within minutes. "We realized we could simplify the computations by tailoring it to this particular problem, and thus use much less memory. A calculation that previously required a supercomputer now runs on a laptop", says Stark.

The resulting map of hydrogen absorption reveals a three-dimensional section of the universe 11 billions light years away – this is first time the cosmic web has been mapped at such a vast distance. The W. M. Keck Observatory operates the largest, most scientifically productive telescopes on Earth. The two, 10-meter optical/infrared telescopes near the summit of Mauna Kea on the Island of Hawaii feature a suite of advanced instruments including imagers, multi-object spectrographs, high-resolution spectrographs, integral-field spectroscopy and world-leading laser guide star adaptive optics systems.

The Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) is a very versatile visible-wavelength imaging and spectroscopy instrument commissioned in 1993 and operating at the Cassegrain focus of Keck I. Since it has been commissioned it has seen two major upgrades to further enhance its capabilities: addition of a second, blue arm optimized for shorter wavelengths of light; and the installation of detectors that are much more sensitive at the longest (red) wavelengths. Each arm is optimized for the wavelengths it covers. This large range of wavelength coverage, combined with the instrument's high sensitivity, allows the study of everything from comets (which have interesting features in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum), to the blue light from star formation, to the red light of very distant objects. LRIS also records the spectra of up to 50 objects simultaneously, especially useful for studies of clusters of galaxies in the most distant reaches, and earliest times, of the universe.

Ruimtemensen waarschuwen voor gevaren sociale kloof

“Zet het nieuws aan en je ziet massale demonstraties, historische opstanden en rellen in ooit rustige straten – er is geen twijfel dat de groeiende inkomensongelijkheid een kwestie van cruciaal belang is.” Dit is geen citaat uit een recent artikel in een tijdschrift over sociale verandering, maar de openingszin van hoofdstuk 2 uit Visie op de Mondiale Agenda 2014, het recente rapport van het World Economic Forum (WEF), dat jaarlijks een exclusieve bijeenkomst voor de mondiale elite in Davos houdt.

Wereldleiders lijken zich eindelijk bewust te worden van de gevaren van de groeiende kloof tussen rijk en arm, en dat deze ontwikkeling niet ongehinderd verder kan gaan kwam ook naar voren in de ‘State of the Union’-toespraak van president Obama in januari dit jaar: “De ondernemingswinsten en aandelenkoersen zijn, na vier jaar economische groei, nog nooit zo hoog geweest en degenen die aan de top staan hebben het nog nooit zo goed gehad. Maar de middeninkomens zijn nauwelijks gegroeid. De ongelijkheid is toegenomen… De koude, harde werkelijkheid is dat zelfs te midden van het herstel er nog te veel Amerikanen zijn die harder moeten werken dan ooit om rond te komen, laat staan vooruit te komen.”

Hij vervolgde met het aankondigen van beleid om de gevaren waarmee de groeiende ongelijkheid in inkomen en kansen gepaard gaat, aan te pakken. Dat dit geen overbodige luxe is bleek pas geleden opnieuw toen personeel van fastfoodketens overal in de VS een dag staakten voor verhoging van het minimumloon.

Mensen met een hart en enig gezond verstand geven vaak uitdrukking aan hun ongeloof over de dysfunctionele manier waarop de mensheid zich tot zichzelf of de planeet verhoudt door de positie van een buitenstaander in te nemen: “Als een Marsmannetje onze planeet zou bezoeken…”, gevolgd door een beschrijving van de manier waarop mensen het leven voor zichzelf of voor andere schepsels gecompliceerd maken op een wijze die, behalve winst maken, nergens op slaat.

Maar misschien is het toch niet zo verwonderlijk dat de wereldleiders pas nu de risico’s beginnen te zien die het gevolg van zulke grote sociale ongelijkheid zijn. Want hoewel de meeste lezers wel weten dat we door mensen van andere planeten werden en worden bezocht, is het velen wellicht niet bekend dat zij herhaaldelijk hun bezorgdheid hebben geuit over de manier waarop wij ervoor gekozen hebben de samenleving te structureren rond de noodzaak om geld te verdienen om in onze dagelijkse behoeften te voorzien en de “droom” van onbeperkte rijkdom, ongeacht of het de planeet verwoest.

Zo kreeg George Adamski, een van de eerste mensen die zijn contacten met ufo’s openbaar maakte tijdens een verblijf op een moederschip in 1954 van zijn buitenaardse gastheren te horen: “Wil de mens zonder rampspoed leven, dan moet hij zijn medemens beschouwen als zichzelf, de één een weerspiegeling van de ander.” Na jaren van voortdurende contacten met mensen van andere planeten, voegde Adamski daar in december 1964 aan toe: “[V]oor een gezonde en welvarende samenleving moet dat wat de grootste problemen veroorzaakt, verwijderd worden. Zoals we allen weten is dat de schandvlek van armoede te midden van overvloed. Het is de oorzaak van ziekte, misdaad en de vele kwaden die we kennen…”

Ontmoetingen met mensen uit de ruimte
Als burgeradviseur in het Amerikaansse leger eind jaren 40 had Daniel Fry op 4 juli 1949 een ervaring met de piloot van een vliegende schotel die vlak voor zijn ogen in de woestijn landde, nadat Fry zijn bus naar huis had gemist. Op een bepaald moment tijdens zijn ervaring, waarin hij zei in een ruimteschip van Californië naar New York en terug te zijn gevlogen, werd hem verteld: “Bij vrijheid van gebrek volgt vrijheid van angst en zou jullie beschaving veilig het kritieke punt in haar ontwikkeling gepasseerd zijn.”

Truman Bethurum, een wegwerker uit Californië, had eind juli 1952 een soortgelijke ervaring. Hierbij ging het weliswaar niet om een reisje in de ‘schouw’, zoals hij de verkenningsschip noemde, maar werd hij bij zeven of acht gelegenheden aan boord uitgenodigd voor gesprekken met de kapitein van het schip.

Hierover zegt Bethurum: “Ik kreeg de indruk dat samenwerking tussen al hun mensen een vast onderdeel van het leven vormt en dat armoede hun onbekend is. En wat wij rijkdom of welvaart noemen, is bij hen beslist gelijker verdeeld dan bij ons op Aarde.” Als gevolg daarvan, zo vertelde de kapitein hem, zijn er geen misdadigers of oplichters op hun planeet (die zij ‘Clarion’ noemde). “Zelfs geen speculanten… Als we die op Clarion hadden, zou het van weinig waarde zijn; dan zouden we landhuizen en krotten hebben, net als jullie.”

Buck Nelson, een boer en zaagmolenaar uit Denver die in juli 1954 zijn eerste ervaring had, schreef na zijn bezoek aan enkele van de andere planeten in ons stelsel: “Sommige van onze veelgebruikte manieren om geld te verdienen zouden voor hen absoluut onacceptabel zijn. Een hiervan is onze gewoonte om op allerlei manieren geld met geld te verdienen.” 

En de Braziliaanse ooggetuige Dino Kraspedon (pseudoniem voor Aladino Félix) tenslotte, wiens ervaring rond dezelfde tijd plaatsvond als George Adamski’s welbekende ontmoeting in de Californische woestijn in november 1952, kreeg onomwonden te horen:
“…oorlogen worden gevoerd tegen de wil van de meeste mensen, want de armen vechten niet zo snel. Bloedvergieten is het voorrecht geworden van de rijken en machtigen… Overvloed heeft hen verblind, gulzigheid heeft hun blik vertroebeld. Conflict is het product van egoïsme.”

Zoals bekend is het regeringen en militairen gelukt om de ervaringen en informatie die deze mensen te midden van de Koude Oorlog gevraagd werd met de wereld te delen, in diskrediet te brengen. Echter, in de jaren 60 ontving één ufo-ooggetuige ongeëvenaarde kennis over het sociale systeem op de planeet van degenen die contact met hem zochten.

Het verhaal van een zakenman
De Nederlandse zakenman Ad (Adriaan) Beers en zijn gezin voeren op een zomeravond circa 1965 met hun tjalk op de Oosterschelde, toen het kompas van het jacht kapot leek te zijn. Terwijl ze naar de haven terugvoeren, staarde Beers plotseling in een krachtig blauw-wit zoeklicht. Hij zette de motor onmiddellijk volle kracht achteruit, maar dat kon niet voorkomen dat de boot ergens tegenaan stootte. Bij nadere inspectie leek het dat het jacht van de heer Beers de romp van een gekapseisd schip had geraakt en vlakbij in het water zag hij een lichaam in het water drijven.

Toen hij overboord sprong met een reddingslijn, landde hij op een hard oppervlak dat zich maar één meter onder het wateropperlak bevond. Kort nadat hij de reddingslijn om het drijvende lichaam had bevestigd, kwam er iemand door het water aangelopen om hem te helpen bij zijn reddingspoging. Deze persoon droeg dezelfde kleding als de drenkeling, wat er uitzag als een ruimtepak. Geschokt ontwaarde hij een ‘dierlijk gezicht’ waarvan de ‘ogen met grote ruitvormige pupillen hypnotisch en zelfbewust’ waren.

Op dat moment besefte hij dat het bezoekers van een andere planeet waren die hem vervolgens, uit dank voor zijn reddingspogingen, uitgebreide informatie over hun wereld gingen verstrekken. Gedurende twee dagen kreeg hij levendige beelden te zien die vergezeld gingen van gedetailleerde beschrijvingen – in de vorm van directe informatieoverdracht – van de filosofie achter de manier waarop het leven op Iarga, zoals zij hun planeet noemden, georganiseerd was.

Ad Beers was directeur van de Nederlandse importeur van Zweedse vrachtwagenfabrikant Scania en publiceerde zijn verhaal in 1969, op aanwijzen van de ruimtebezoekers als science fiction, onder het pseudoniem Stefan Denaerde (‘Steef van de Aarde’) in het bijzonder succesvolle boek Buitenaardse beschaving (waarvan in 2011 een nieuwe Nederlandse uitgave verscheen). In 1977 verscheen de eerste Engelse editie als Operation Survival Earth (‘Operatie Voortbestaan Aarde’). Een uitgebreide Engelstalige uitgave werd vijf jaar later door UFO-onderzoeker Wendelle C. Stevens gepubliceerd als ‘Contact from Planet Iarga’.

Stefan Denaerde kreeg levendige beelden te zien van het leven op de planeet ‘Iarga’, en de bekende tekenaar Rudolf Das maakte gedetailleerde tekeningen van enkele taferelen die Denaerde te zien kreeg: “De ringvormige wooncomplexen, die er uitzien als enorme glazen silo’s, zijn ongeveer 300 meter in diameter bij 120 meter hoog en huisvesten elk ongeveer 10.000 Iarganen. De centrale kern wordt als enkelvoudige unit opgebouwd en de apartementen worden aan de buitenkant daarvan gemonteerd, waardoor het lijkt alsof de pui van glas is. De apartementen zijn 20 bij 20 meter en 6 meter hoog. Ze worden compleet geleverd met beglazing, meubels, huishoudelijke apparatuur, communicatiesystemen, enz., over twee verdiepingen. De ‘levensduur’ van deze constructies is ongeveer 1000 jaar.”

Met zijn eigen achtergrond als zakenman was Ad Beers enorm onder de indruk van wat hij zag als de schrikwekkende doelmatigheid van het sociale stelsel op ‘Iarga’: “Dit moet wel een universeel bestuurde planeet zijn, maar kennelijk zó strikt bestuurd dat alles gestroomlijnd en gestandaardiseerd is. Wat een afgrijselijke gedachte!”

Maar terwijl hij betreurt dat de planeetbewoners zo weinig blijk geven van de hoedanigheid die de kern vormt van de plagen die onze huidige samenleving treffen, getuigt hij tegelijkertijd van een min of meer volmaakte uitdrukking van wat de deelnemers aan de Italiaanse Amicizia-zaak door hun vrienden uit de ruimte werd onderricht, en van wat tevens het doel lijkt te zijn voor de mensheid naarmate we steeds meer reageren op de energieën van eenheid en synthese van het Waterman -tijdperk: “Hun zwakte is de ontwikkeling van individualiteit. Ze doen bijna alles in groepen, ze denken collectief en gehoorzamen de wetten van hun samenleving letterlijk. Ze leven voor en door de vriendschap en de liefde binnen de groep.”

Sociale stelsels op andere planeten
Over het niveau dat zijn gastheren van ‘Iarga’ bereikt hebben, zegt de schrijver: “Hun definitie van het woord ‘beschaving’ of ‘cultuur’ heeft niets te maken met het niveau van hun wetenschap of technologie, maar met de manier waarop de gemeenschap voor de gehandicapten of de zwakkeren zorgt. Het woord ‘supercultuur’ definieert de toestand die ontstaat wanneer uit individuele inspanningen een groepsstructuur tot stand is gekomen die elke vorm van discriminatie tegen wie dan ook uitbant.”

George Adamski in de begintijd van zijn ontdekkingen. Hij kreeg al snel minder aandacht toen een anti-Adamski-campagne tegen hem werd gelanceerd. Inmiddels is er bijna niemand meer die met een open blik naar zijn ontdekkingen kan kijken..!

Net zoals de Commissie-Brandt al in 1980 in haar rapport Noord-Zuid: een overlevingsprogramma adviseerde dat de enige oplossing voor onze problemen op Aarde een systeem is dat gebaseerd is op een mengeling van markteconomie en overheidssturing, lichten de ruimtemensen toe: “Ons kosmische universele economische systeem kan zowel met het communisme als met de kapitalistische Westerse economie vergeleken worden. Je zou ook kunnen zeggen dat onze kosmische economie met geen van beide te vergelijken is… Alleen door dit systeem kan een mensenras een cultureel niveau van sociaal evenwicht bereiken.”

Terwijl de mensen op Aarde momenteel gevangen zitten in een systeem dat ernstig uit balans is en hen reduceert tot dienaren van ‘de economie’ en waar bezuinigingen die steeds dieper snijden in sociale voorzieningen door politici verdedigd worden als “noodzakelijk om de economie te stimuleren”, dient het strikt gereguleerde economische stelsel op ‘Iarga’ uitsluitend de noden van het volk en helpt de auteur zelfs in te zien hoe een op rechtvaardigheid gebaseerd systeem tevens bijdraagt aan de bloei van vrijheid: “Het universele economische systeem blijkt in de praktijk een efficiënt productiesysteem van goederen en diensten, waarbij de prioriteit op de sectoren huisvesting, voeding en transport ligt… Het doel van dit systeem is om het individu zoveel mogelijk van niet-creatieve, slaafse arbeid te bevrijden.”

Het universele economische systeem “dat onder heel veel intelligente rassen bestaat, bekommert zich niet om geld, bezit of beloning. Het doel van dit systeem is de mensen te bevrijden van materiële invloeden en drijfveren.” In reactie op vragen over de ruilmiddelen en regeringssystemen op andere planeten schreef George Adamski in oktober 1957 het volgende:

“Hun ruilstelsel bestaat uit een uitwisseling van producten en diensten zonder tussenkomst van geld. Alle productie komt aan iedereen ten goede en iedereen ontvangt daaruit naar behoefte. En aangezien er geen ruilmiddel aan te pas komt, zijn er geen ‘rijken’; er zijn geen ‘armen’. Maar allen delen gelijkelijk en werken voor het algemeen welzijn… De behoeften van het volk worden onpartijdig vastgesteld door [een orgaan van vertegenwoordigers die uit elk district en uit elke maatschappelijke rang worden gekozen], en problemen worden opgelost voor het algemeen welzijn van allen.”

Dit klinkt als het geavanceerde ruilhandelsysteem dat esotericus en futuroloog Benjamin Creme heeft voorspeld als middel voor de distributie van hulpbronnen na de mondiale economische ineenstorting die de mensheid nu elk moment kan treffen. Ook in de verslagen van verscheidene anderen die contact hadden met ruimtemensen wordt naar dit systeem verwezen. Evenzo wordt Ad Beers verteld: “…wij kennen geen geld, maar iedereen die dat wil kan op vakantie gaan.” En: “Op ‘Iarga’ wordt niets betaald, uitsluitend geregistreerd. Wat een consument gebruikt wordt in het computercentrum geregistreerd … en dat mag niet meer zijn dan waar hij recht op heeft.”

Zijn contactpersonen uit de ruimte leggen uit dat er op ‘Iarga’ twee wereldwijde consumentenorganisaties zijn die “de productiekartels aanzetten tot de productie van de benodigde goederen. Het is de kartels niet toegestaan te adverteren of de consument op enige manier te beïnvloeden, aangezien dit nooit objectief kan zijn, want “in een sociaal stabiele samenleving heb je niet alleen vrijheid van meningsuiting, maar, nog belangrijker, vrijheid van denken. Propaganda, herhaalde eenzijdige informatie, ondermijnt vrijheid van denken…”

Marssondes en de honger in de wereld..
Toen de heer Beers de bezoekers uit de ruimte naar specifieke technologische kennis vroeg, had het antwoord niet duidelijker kunnen zijn: “Het laatste wat jullie nodig hebben is technologische informatie waardoor de kloof tussen jullie intellectuele ontwikkeling en jullie vrijwel niet-bestaande sociale ontwikkeling nog groter wordt. Speel nu maar met jullie Marssondes, terwijl de helft van de wereldbevolking honger lijdt en in armoede leeft. De enige informatie die jullie nodig hebben is op het gebied van sociale normen.”

Op basis van de beschrijving die Ad Beers geeft van de informatie die hem gegeven werd, speculeert deze schrijver – wiens eerdere research erop wijst dat de buitenaardse aanwezigheid op Aarde afkomstig is van planeten in ons eigen zonnestelsel – dat de bemanning van het ruimteschip waar de heer Beers tegen op voer, eigenlijk afkomstig was van de planeet Mars, die door Truman Bethurum beschreven is als “een belangrijke productieplaneet”.

Dat het heelal wemelt van leven is geen vraag meer, maar een zekerheid. Foto’s als deze, van UFO’s op Mars, genomen op 28 april 2014 door de Mars-verkenner ‘Curiosity’, zijn eerder regelmaat dan uitzondering.

Benjamin Creme heeft verklaard dat Mars evolutionair op hetzelfde niveau staat als de Aarde, maar: “Mars heeft niet zoveel vergissingen gemaakt als wij, en dat is de reden waarom hun technologie ongelooflijk ver vooruit loopt op die van ons. Zij zijn meesters van de ruimte, meesters van energie. Ze maken de meeste van de ruimteschepen die wij zien en ufo’s noemen, van kleine verkenners tot aan de gigantische moederschepen. Lezers die nog altijd in de illusie verkeren dat Leven alleen op koolstof gebaseerd kan zijn en zich uitsluitend in vast-stoffelijke vorm kan uitdrukken worden verwezen naar hoofstuk 5 in mijn boek ‘UFO’s en de ruimtemensen: Hier om te helpen’, voor een uitleg over het denkbeeld van leven op de etherische (fijn-)stoffelijke niveaus van materie, waar de wetenschap naar op zoek is in de vorm van ‘donkere materie’ en ‘donkere energie’. Begin juli 2014 werd over een interessante nieuwe aanwijzing van de realiteit van deze etherische gebieden van bestaan bericht toen astrofysici bekendmaakten dat onderzoek uitwees dat er 400% meer licht in de intergalactische ruimte bestaat dan aan bekende bronnen kan worden toegeschreven.

Een nieuwe definitie van ‘exopolitiek’
Ofschoon het verhaal van Beers zich meer richtte op de alledaagse aspecten van het leven op ‘Iarga’, omvatte zijn uitwisseling met de ruimtemensen ook wat filosofischer kwesties die lezers die op de hoogte zijn van de leringen over onthechting van bijvoorbeeld J. Krishnamurti bekend in de oren zullen klinken: “Geluk is vrede hebben met jezelf en je omgeving. Dat wordt voor een groot deel bepaald door je succes in het bereiken van zelf geformuleerde doelen, met andere woorden een meedogenloze beoordeling van jezelf. Dat individuele streven om een zelfgekozen doel te bereiken [in plaats van met anderen te wedijveren; GA] is de creativiteit in de mens.”

En: “Het lichaam met al zijn zelfzuchtige eisen is slechts een omhulsel. Het gaat ons slechts om de creatieve intelligentie, de ziel die in staat is tot onzelfzuchtig denken. Hoe onderrichten we kinderen voor vrede en geluk? Vrijheid is de afwezigheid van de gevolgen van dwang op het gedrag van het individu. Vrijheid kan niet worden verkregen met een wapen in de hand. Die kan alleen worden verkregen door de zorgvuldige mentale vorming door ouders van hun kinderen, door een juist begrip van goed en kwaad.”

Terwijl de wereld gereed is, al is het wellicht onbewust, voor het laatste bedrijf in het planetaire drama dat zich ontvouwt en de ineenstorting van onze falende structuren zelfs de schijn van democratie wegvaagt, wordt de mensheid gedwongen om de spirituele feiten van het leven opnieuw onder ogen te zien en de handen ineen te slaan om rechtvaardigheid en vrijheid voor allen te eisen.

Het is aldus interessant om op te merken dat niet alleen het Leven en het mensenrijk universele verschijnselen in de hele Kosmos zijn, zoals ik elders heb gedocumenteerd, maar de Wetten die de uitdrukking daarvan in juiste menselijke verhoudingen regeren kennelijk ook, als basis voor een verstandig sociaal systeem dat het voortbestaan van het mensenras en de veilige vooruitgang van haar beschaving waarborgt.

Met nog veel meer informatie langs dezelfde lijnen van andere mensen die contact hadden met de ruimtemensen, die ik in een nieuw boek zal presenteren, dringt zich een nieuwe definitie van ‘exopolitiek’ op. De eenvoudigste definitie luidt momenteel ongeveer als volgt: “Het onderzoek naar de politieke actoren, processen en instellingen met betrekking tot buitenaards leven.” Voor sommigen vooronderstelt dit het bestaan van buitenaards leven, voor anderen slechts de mogelijkheid daarvan.

Mensen die bekend zijn met mijn boeken zullen weten dat ik de buitenaardse aanwezigheid op Aarde als onbetwistbaar feit zie, op basis van een ‘driehoeksmeting’ van overeenkomsten tussen de informatie afkomstig van de oorspronkelijke contactees van de jaren 50, de gezamenlijke wijsheidsleringen van de mensheid en de ervaringen van hoogwaardigheidsbekleders en functionarissen in de afgelopen decennia, tegen de achtergrond van de veranderingen die onze wereld momenteel overspoelen.

Gebaseerd op de informatie in dit artikel en de relevantie ervan voor de huidige toestand van de wereld – waar ook Paul Hellyer op wees in zijn boek Light at the End of the Tunnel: A Survival Plan for the Human Species uit 2010 – lijkt een praktischer definitie van het woord ‘exopolitiek’ terecht, waarvan de betekenis teruggrijpt op de oorspronkelijke betekenis van de samenstellende delen. Als ‘exo’ staat voor “(van) buiten” en ‘politiek’ voor “kwesties die de staat of zijn burgers betreffen, kunnen we ‘exopolitiek’ nu als volgt definiëren:

Exopolitiek [ontelbaar zelfstandig naamwoord]:

Mensen van andere planeten die de mensheid alternatieve, verstandiger manieren laten zien om de samenleving in te richten, zonder hun zienswijzen op te leggen.

Hiermee wordt ‘exopolitiek’ in een klap een veel urgenter begrip, aangezien het de buitenaardse aanwezigheid op Aarde stevig in de context plaatst van de crises die de mensheid momenteel treffen: politiek, economisch, financieel, sociaal en ecologisch.

A star INSIDE a star: Scientists discover neutron star within a supergiant 200,000 light-years from Earth

In 1975 astronomers Dr Kip Thorne and Dr Anna Żytkow predicted the existence of a star within a star, dubbed a Thorne-Żytkow object.

They suggested one would form when a neutron star collided with a supergiant, being swallowed inside its huge companion.

And now almost 40 years later the evidence for such an object has been found, providing astronomers with a fascinating and bizarre new space object to study.

Astronomers have found a strange double star using a telescope in Chile. The so-called Thorne-Żytkow object consists of a neutron star that was swallowed by a much larger red supergiant. This can occur if two stars are orbiting each other, as shown in this illustration, and one is pushed into the other

Thorne-Żytkow objects (TŻOs) are hybrids of red supergiant and neutron stars that, from the outside, resemble regular red supergiants such as Betelgeuse in Orion.

Their chemical signatures are different from such stars, however, due to the unique activity taking place inside.

And amazingly, while regular stars are powered by nuclear fusion in their cores, TŻOs are actually powered by the absorbed neutron star.

The discovery of one of these incredible objects was announced earlier this year, reports Amy Teitel for Motherboard.

The astronomers made their discovery with the 6.5-metre (21.3 feet) Magellan Clay telescope on Las Campanas in Chile.

They examined the spectrum of light emitted from apparent red supergiants, which tells them what elements are present.

When the spectrum of one particular star - HV 2112 in the Small Magellanic Cloud 200,000 light-years away - was first displayed, the observers were quite surprised by some of the unusual features. 

Such objects were first predicted to exist in 1975 by astronomers Dr Kip Thorne and Dr Anna Żytkow. They are thought to occur when a neutron star (shown in illustration) collides with a red supergiant and is absorbed. The exact process by which this happens though is not well understood

Project leader Dr Emily Levesque of the University of Colorado Boulder and her colleagues took a close look at the subtle lines in the spectrum and found that it contained excess rubidium, lithium and molybdenum.

Past research has shown that normal stellar processes can create each of these elements, but high abundances of all three of these at the temperatures typical of red supergiants is a unique signature of TŻOs.

‘Studying these objects is exciting because it represents a completely new model of how stellar interiors can work,’ said Dr Levesque.

‘In these interiors we also have a new way of producing heavy elements in our universe.

‘You've heard that everything is made of “star stuff” - inside these stars we might now have a new way to make some of it.’

And Dr Żytkow, who has now seen her prediction be validated, said: ‘I am extremely happy that observational confirmation of our theoretical prediction has started to emerge.’

‘Since Kip Thorne and I proposed our models of stars with neutron cores, people were not able to disprove our work.

‘If theory is sound, experimental confirmation shows up sooner or later.

‘So it was a matter of identification of a promising group of stars, getting telescope time and proceeding with the project.’

The team is careful to point out that HV 2112 displays some chemical characteristics that don't quite match theoretical models.

Co-author of the study Dr Philip Massey of Lowell Observatory in Flagstarr, Arizona points out: ‘We could, of course, be wrong.

‘There are some minor inconsistencies between some of the details of what we found and what theory predicts.

‘But the theoretical predictions are quite old, and there have been a lot of improvements in the theory since then.

‘Hopefully our discovery will spur additional work on the theoretical side now.’

Rendlesham UFO incident: Sculpture to be installed at forest site

September 22, 2014 - A 'UFO' has been built to mark the spot where an alleged landing took place in one of the UK's biggest UFO mysteries.

In December 1980, there were reports of phenomena in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk near a United States Air Force base.

The Forestry Commission has created a metal interpretation of a UFO to add to its trail which commemorates the alleged sightings.

September 22, 2014 - A 'UFO' has been built to mark the spot where an alleged landing took place in one of the UK's biggest UFO mysteries.

In December 1980, there were reports of phenomena in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk near a United States Air Force base.

Two US servicemen claimed to have seen lights outside the perimeter fence at RAF Woodbridge.

Since then, many books and internet sites have been filled with conflicting theories about whether it was an alien visitation, a military aircraft, the beam from Orfordness Lighthouse or natural phenomena.

The Forestry Commission opened a UFO Trail in 2005 and placed three logs in a clearing where witnesses claimed a craft had landed and disappeared.

The new UFO will be placed in the same clearing.

UFO 'Five Miles Wide' Caught Hovering Above The Ocean In NASA Photo                                

Brace yourselves for inanity.

Someone has found a five-mile-wide black disc hovering over the ocean in a NASA photograph.

Our friends at UFO Sightings Daily, a blog somehow able to deliver 'MIND BLOWING!' content on the greatest conspiracies in human history once every 24 hours, published news of the find on Thursday.

The disc was discovered in a picture taken November 2013, the original (much darker) version of which is still available on NASA's website.

The website says that while the UFO appears to be above the ocean, it's actually hiding underneath it - though not very well, clearly.

And the pic of interest itself:

"This shows a massive stealth black disk over the ocean. The dimensions are almost perfect. Streetcap1 of Youtube found this one and I have to say its beyond words. This UFO looks to be more than 5-7 miles across. Since it is over the ocean area, the only place that it could hide without being noticed is below the ocean."

They also published the video analysis of the image, which we've embedded above.

Needless to say there are numerous other possibilities here, including camera glitches, gaps missed by the process of stitching together smaller images to make a large enough one to publish, and interference.

Either way there is no evidence of five-mile-wide stuff hiding under the ocean. Unless you include Atlantis. Which is also not true.

Human Spaceflight Launches Will Return to the United States

NASA has just announced that Boeing and SpaceX have been selected to lead the Commercial Crew Program, founded in 2010. Boeing’s CST-100 and SpaceX’s Dragon V2 will be used to launch humans into Low Earth Orbit and to the International Space Station from Cape Canaveral beginning in 2017. This will be the first human spaceflight launch on American soil since the space shuttle program retired in 2011.

Since the end of the shuttle program, American astronauts headed to the ISS have had to bum a ride from Russia at a rate of $71 million per seat. However, the desire to be in charge of their own launches has been highlighted in recent months due to strained relations with Russia over the invasion of Ukraine. The United States government put sanctions on Russia and severed most of its ties back in April, except for its dealings with the ISS. In retaliation, Russia has threatened to stop providing transportation for American astronauts. 

A key difference between the space shuttle program and this new venture is that the spacecraft will be provided by privately-owned corporations, and the government will be contracting out those services. This allows for companies to compete for contracts, driving down the cost and boosting innovative designs. 

SpaceX, headed up by Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, submitted a design called the Dragon V2.

It is a modified version of the Dragon spacecraft that SpaceX has been using to bring cargo to the ISS since 2010. A major feature of the seven-seated spacecraft is the ability for controlled landings. This means that in addition to going to the ISS, the spacecraft could be used to bring humans to the moon or other worlds. The advanced landing system also means the spacecraft can be collected and reused quickly. This cuts down on wasted materials, which subsequently reduces the expense of each launch. The Dragon V2 will launch using SpaceX's own Falcon 9 rocket.

Boeing was the heavy favorite going into today’s announcement, with its CST-100 spacecraft.

The body design is unique as it does not include any welded junctions. This makes the vessel lighter, more structurally sound, and easier to produce. Each vessel, which seats seven, can be used 10 times. Upon returning to Earth, the spacecraft will land using parachutes and airbags. Additionally, struts within the seat will provide added cushioning, reducing the stress of impact on the astronauts. The CST-100 will launch using an Atlas V rocket, produced by United Launch Alliance. ULA is a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

NASA has been using private companies to bring cargo to the ISS over the last few years. The ability to contract human transportation to and from the ISS frees NASA up to focus on human ventures deeper into space (such as Mars). NASA’s Space Launch System will launch an unmanned Orion spacecraft in 2017, with the goal of the first manned mission in 2021.

A plane has been in space for 600 days, and no one knows why

The X-37B is a kind of robotic space plane, built by the US. It’s been in Earth’s orbit for more than 500 days. And its real purpose is a complete mystery. Intrigued?


Here’s what we do know about X-37B
Constructed in California, the Boeing-built X-37B Orbital Space Vehicle was built for the US Air Force as a test vehicle; not intended to reach production. It is a quarter the size of the Endeavour Space Shuttle. It is equipped with heat-shield protection for re-entry to Earth’s atmosphere.

Currently the X-37B is orbiting at 28,044km/h, at a distance of around 350km in the sky. It can land, but no one will say when that will be.

“I’ll give you my standard line on X-37,” General William Shelton, commander of the Air Force Space Command told Space.com in May. “X-37 is doing great. I can’t tell you what it’s doing, but it’s doing great.”

It’s been in the sky before, after being launched on April 22, 2010, on a rocket. It then landed on December 3, 2010 – blowing a tire and suffering minor damage to its underbelly.

It took off again from Cape Canaveral on December 11, 2012 – now reaching 500 days in orbit.

The Air Force also launched a second model of X-37B on March 5, 2011. Described by the U.S.

military as an “effort to test new space technologies”, it landed safely at Vandenberg Air Force Base on June 16, 2012, after 469 days in space. This third mission has now smashed this previous record.
X-37B’s actual functions are still heavily classified.

As you’d imagine, conspiracy theorists are having a field day, and here’s why:

Powered by a solar panel that unfurls once in orbit, X-37B can open with small, shuttle-like payload bay in its middle – think of a clamshell opening from underneath. There’s room for more than just a solar panel too. Exactly what items it carries, and why they need to be in space so long, has proved elusive for analysts, the space community, and the media.

To add further intrigue, the plane is classified as a secret project, yet maker Boeing has released pictures and more than two pages of details on the X-37B. That’s not how secrets are usually dealt with. By contrast, the secretLockheed SR-71 Blackbird was not declassified until decades after it had been flown in the Vietnam War.

The X-37 started life way back in 1999 when NASA asked Boeing’s Phantom Works division to develop an orbital test vehicle. This was a civilian project, and the X-37 was originally spec’d as an unmanned, robotic spacecraft that would rendezvous with satellites to refuel, repair them, or crash them back to Earth once their lifecycle was complete. But in 2004 the project was transferred to DARPA and since then, it has been highly classified.

The amateur skywatching community that documents satellites say it’s orbiting between 43.5 degrees north latitude to 43.5 degrees south latitude. That’s a band around the middle of Earth that takes in much of the US, Middle East, and Asia, but is away from Russia, and Europe. Spotters suggest that at the altitude of 350km, it is ideal altitude for spying, but too low to refuel or fix other satellites.

It’s versatile, and has worked well enough that Boeing is contracted to create the next model, the X-37C. It will be at least 65 per cent larger and have the ability to carry up to six astronauts, while operating unmanned.

What we can guess
The two most popular theories suggest the vehicle is simply running an extended duration test – a marathon in space. The other theory is that the two previous missions prove the testing phase is complete, and it is now on an extended operation running a mission, or multiple missions.
The long endurance run theory has credit; proving that new, experimental critical components can work reliably for a long-duration in space, close to Earth.

The running-mission has credit too – with two previous missions complete, X-37B can now operate at length. And perhaps it is – observing, spying, experimenting, hosting space-weapons, or collecting data for the NSA. We just don’t know.

Both theories are plausible.
Joan Johnson-Freese, a professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College, told Space.com, “While the classified nature of the X-37B has raised some concerns about its intended operational purposes, technically, the program must be commended for doing something new… and successfully.”

She speculated X-37′s payload would include new sensors and satellite hardware to be tested.

What it isn’t
Plenty of conspiracy theorist have posed the question of X-37B carrying a nuclear payload, to guarantee a ‘first strike’ opportunity (or to have a counter-option in place).

If you have any hope for humanity, that can’t be right. The US is a signatory to The Space Treaty, which is no joke. Space-based weapons of mass destruction are banned.

(One curious example of a space-based weapon that isn’t banned is a Kinetic strike, where objects whizzing around the Earth at great speed are intentionally sent to the ground, causing a meteorite-like impact and widespread damage. This type of attack is also known as ‘Rods from God’.)

Discovery! First Water Ice Clouds Found Beyond Our Solar System

For the first time, astronomers have detected water ice clouds, like the ones that shroud Earth, around a dim celestial body outside of our solar system.

Scientists discovered evidence of the alien water ice clouds in infrared images of a newly discovered brown dwarf that's as cold as the North Pole.

"Ice clouds are predicted to be very important in the atmospheres of planets beyond our solar system, but they've never been observed outside of it before now," study leader Jacqueline Faherty, who is a fellow at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., said in a statement.

Astronomers have detected traces of water ice clouds in the atmosphere of the brown dwarf WISE 0855, a misfit failed star about 7.2 light-years from Earth. The discovery is the first time water ice clouds have been found beyond the solar system, scientists say.

Ice water has been found around gas giants in our solar system. NASA's Cassini spacecraft recently detected water ice crystals on Saturn that had been churned up from deep inside the ringed planet's thick atmosphere during a huge storm. Water ice clouds are also hidden underneath Jupiter's stormy ammonia ice clouds.

Now, scientists found faint signatures of such clouds around the brown dwarf WISE J085510.83-071442.5, or W0855 for short. The object is the coldest brown dwarf ever observed by scientists. It lurks 7.2 light-years away from Earth and was first seen by NASA's Wide-Field Infrared Explorer.

Brown dwarfs are often referred to as failed stars that resemble planets. These objects start out as clouds of collapsing gas and dust much like their main-sequence star cousins. But brown dwarfs never get hot enough for hydrogen fusion to start at the core, and the close-packed stellar material reaches a stable state. Sometimes, these objects are confused with freestanding planets because they look so much like gas giants; many of them are even cold enough to maintain their own atmospheres.

Faherty and colleagues used the FourStar near infrared camera at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile to take 151 images of W0855 over three nights. Scientists had previously predicted how thick water clouds around such a chilly brown dwarf would scatter light. This telltale pattern was observed around W0855. The team also detected evidence of sulfide ice clouds in the atmosphere.

"This object is so faint and it's exciting to be the first people to detect it with a telescope on the ground," study researcher Chris Tinney, an astronomer at the Australian Centre for Astrobiology, at the University of New South Wales, said in a statement.

The findings were published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters on Tuesday (Sept. 9). A draft version of the paper can be read online at the preprint service arxiv.org.

Rosetta Arrives at Comet After 10 Year Voyage

At around 09:30 UTC this morning, the Rosetta spacecraft completed its decade-long trek throughout the solar system as it finally reached its intended target of Comet 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The spacecraft will orbit the comet as it makes its way into the inner solar system, studying how the nucleus is affected by the heat of the Sun. 

The comet is currently about 450 million kilometers (251 million miles) from Earth and is currently headed toward the inner solar system as part of its 6.45-year-long orbit. The orbit extends past Jupiter and comes roughly halfway between the orbits of Mars and Earth. Rosetta is currently studying the comet, trying to find the best place for the lander when it launches in November.

NASA's real life Enterprise may take us to other star systems one day

Dr. Harold "Sonny" White is still working on a warp drive at NASA's Johnson Space Center. His work is still in the experimental stage but that doesn't mean he can't imagine what the real life Enterprise ship would look like according to his math.

This is the starship that may take us where no human has gone before. And it has me screaming like a little Klingon girl.

Concept 3D artist Mark Rademaker told io9 that "he worked with White to create the updated model, which includes a sleek ship nestled at the center of two enormous rings, which create the warp bubble."

The updated model is the one you can see above, a variation of the original concept which, according to Dr. White, was rendered by Rademaker based on an idea by Matthew Jeffries, the guy who came with "the familiar Star Trek look." This is the original warp drive spaceship concept:

Dr. White—whose daily life is working in future propulsion solutions for interplanetary travel in the near future, like ion and plasma thrusters—developed new theoretical work that solved the problems of the Alcubierre Drive concept, a theory that allowed faster-than-light travel based on Einstein's field equations in general relativity, developed by theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre.

A spaceship equipped with a warp drive would allow faster-than-light travel by bending the space around it, making distances shorter. At the local level, however, the spaceship wouldn't be moving faster than light. Therefore, warp drive travel doesn't violate the first Einstein commandment: Thou shall not travel faster than light.

The spacecraft reminds me a bit to the spaceship in Chris Nolan's Interstellar, a film that—in theory—will portrait realistic faster-than-light travel. This is partial view of the ship in the movie, which also has a ring of some sort around it.

Not a fantasy, but real science

But Interstellar is just science fiction. Dr. White's work at the Advanced Propulsion Theme Lead for the NASA Engineering Directorate is science. And while his department only gets peanuts compared to NASA's budget (not to talk about the Pentagon's) I find his words comforting:

Perhaps a Star Trek experience within our lifetime is not such a remote possibility.

See, Dr. White and his colleagues aren't making a movie or coming up with 3D renders for the sake of it. They just don't just believe a real life warp drive is theoretically possible; they've already started the work to create one:

Working at NASA Eagleworks—a skunkworks operation deep at NASA's Johnson Space Center—Dr. White's team is trying to find proof of those loopholes. They have "initiated an interferometer test bed that will try to generate and detect a microscopic instance of a little warp bubble" using an instrument called the White-Juday Warp Field Interferometer.

It may sound like a small thing now, but the implications of the research huge. In his own words:

Although this is just a tiny instance of the phenomena, it will be existence proof for the idea of perturbing space time-a "Chicago pile" moment, as it were. Recall that December of 1942 saw the first demonstration of a controlled nuclear reaction that generated a whopping half watt. This existence proof was followed by the activation of a ~ four megawatt reactor in November of 1943. Existence proof for the practical application of a scientific idea can be a tipping point for technology development.

The roadmap to the warp drive

According to Dr. White, this is a roadmap that they need to follow to achieve that final objective of rapid interstellar travel. He explains this roadmap in the video above.

If his work is successful, he says that we would be able to create an engine that will get us to Alpha Centauri "in two weeks as measured by clocks here on Earth." The time will be the same in the spaceship and on Earth, he claims, and there will not be "tidal forces inside the bubble, no undue issues, and the proper acceleration is zero. When you turn the field on, everybody doesn't go slamming against the bulkhead, which would be a very short and sad trip."

Every time I read that paragraph I smile—and these renders just make my smile so wide it looks stupid.

OK, Dr. White, you got our attention.  Make it so.
