The most popular plant in Achill is Heather.Heather is situated in the bogs. A bog is a lumpy, soggy and unstable land with lots of heather growing on it. When bog land is really wet and soggy you can sink in it. You will sink faster if you stand up straight so lie on your back and you will have more time to grab on to something and pull yourself out. Bogs are used to make turf. Turf is used to light fires. We cut turf in the summer. We use a special cutter that looks like a spade to cut turf. Turf is cut into cuboids and then put into a sack when it is dry. Turf is dried up bog. Only a few animals live on bogs: mostly rats, mice and sometimes you might see a frog. Heather is dark purple in colour. Here in Achill we use concrete blocks to build our houses. There is no clay in the ground in Achill. We do not use stone bricks to build our houses.
De populairste plant in Achill is heide. Heide groeit op veenland. Veen is een dik, vochtig en onstabiel land waar heel veel heide op groeit. Wanneer veenland echt nat is kan je erin zakken.Je zakt vlugger als je rechtop blijft staan, dus moet je op je rug gaan liggen, dan heb je meer tijd om je ergens aan vast te houden. Veen wordt gebruikt om turf te maken. Turf wordt gebruikt om vuur te maken.We snijden de turf in de zomer. We gebruiken een speciale snijder dat een beetje lijkt op een spade. Turf wordt in balken gesneden en in zakken gestopt wanneer het droog is.Turf is eigenlijk opgedroogd veen. Er leven maar een paar dieren in het veen: meestal ratten, muizen en soms zie je wel eens een kikker. Heide is donker paars van kleur. Hier in Achill gebruiken mensen betonblokken om huizen te bouwen. Wij hebben hier geen klei. We gebruiken dus geen baksteen om onze huizen te bouwen!
Wij zouden graag een woordje uitleg geven over onze feestdagen. Feestdagen zijn dagen waarop we dingen van vroeger herdenken.De belangrijkste feestdag is Kerstmis.Op die dag werd Jezus geboren.Jezus is een belangrijke figuur in onze bijbel. Hier volgen een paar namen van feestdagen: Nieuwjaar, Valentijn, Driekoningen, wapenstilstand, Aswoensdag, Pasen, Hemelvaart,… Voor kinderen is 1dag heel belangrijk: de kinderrechtendag.Dat betekent dat mensen vinden dat kinderen ook rechten moeten hebben!Op een feestdag moeten mensen meestal niet werken en er is speciaal eten!! Zo,we hopen dat jullie wat meer over de feestdagen weten in België.

These are some other names of feast-days: Newyear, Saint Valentine, epiphany , armistice, Ash Wednesday, Easter, Ascension Day,… For us, children, one day is very important: the day of the rights of the children. This means that people think that children also should have rights. On a feast-day people don’t have to work, and there are special meals! There are many wild animals on Achill and farm animals (mostly sheep). The sheep stay on the mountains. In the summer there are dolphins in the ocean. Sometimes there are basking sharks in the ocean. There are seals and many birds: magpies, crows and seagulls. There are badgers in the woods. There are rats in the drains. There are salmon in the lake in Keel. We also have plenty of foxes. Often we see one dead on the road.
Er zijn veel wilde dieren in Achill en ook gekweekte dieren (vooral schapen). De schapen blijven op de bergen. In de zomer zijn er dolfijnen in de oceaan. Soms zitten er reuzenhaaien in de oceaan. Er zijn zeeleeuwen en veel vogels: eksters, kraaien en zeemeeuwen. Er zijn dassen in het woud. Er zijn ratten in de dijken. Er is zalm in het meer in Keel. We hebben ook veel vossen. Soms zien we er wel eens een dood op straat.
Naar aanleiding van ons wero thema “anders en toch gewoon”, hebben we een bezoek gebracht aan Mivalti.
Mivalti is een opvangtehuis voor mensen met een handicap. Ze leren daar zelfstandig werken. Toen we daar binnenkwamen, hebben we eerst naar een videofilm gekeken over het ontstaan van Mivalti .Sommige van die mensen zijn van bij hun geboorte gehandicapt. De oudste persoon daar aanwezig is 84 en de jongste is 21. In de tuin kunnen de mensen met dieren leren omgaan . Er zijn ook een paar werkgroepen waar de mensen leren kaarsen of een wekelijks krantje “kapoentje” maken. Wij vonden de daggroep het best. Daar leert men koken en kuisen. Ze hebben daar ook een tuintje dat zelf gemaakt is door de gehandicapte mensen. Verder is er ook een groep die ouderwetse spelen speelt. Ze gaan ook iedere maand naar het zwembad en naar de markt en ze leren ook alleen naar de winkel gaan.
Er zijn personen die er iedere dag heen gaan met een busje en dan terug naar huis gaan, maar er zijn er ook die blijven slapen.
Because we have a theme in our class about “different but yet the same” we visited Mivalti.
Mivalti is a shelter for people with a disability. They learn to work independently. When we arrived, we first looked at a video about the foundation of Mivalti. Some of those people have a disability since they’re born. The oldest man there was 81 years old and the youngest person was xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />21. In the garden they learn to take care of animals. There are also some groups where they learn to make candles and some of them make a weekly paper: ’t Kapoentje. We preferred the day group. People learn to cook and clean in this group. They also have a garden that they maintain completely by themselves. There is also a group where the people play old games. Every month the people of Mivalti go to the swimming pool and to the market. They also learn how to shop.
There are people who go to Mivalti every day with the bus. In the evening they go back home. Some other people stay there overnight.
Blue flag beaches mean that they are safe to swim in and are clean. Blue flag beaches always have life guards in summer. They’re five blue flag beaches in Achill Island. Their names are Keel beach, Dooega Head, Doogort, Keem, Golden Strand. Keel beach is the most popular beach in Achill Island. There are sand dunes around Keel beach. Our favourite beaches are Keel and Keem. Keel beach is next to a big cliff and mountain, the Minaun. The closest beaches to our school are Dooega Head and the Golden Strand. All the beaches in Achill are nice to swim in and very clean. Keel has the biggest waves. In most beaches they have seagulls. The longest beach in Achill is Keel. There are basking sharks in most of the beaches.
‘Blauwe vlag stranden’ betekent dat deze stranden veilig zijn om in zee te zwemmen en dat ze proper zijn. ‘Blauwe vlag stranden’ hebben altijd een redder in de zomer. Er zijn vijf blauwe vlag stranden in Achill Island. Ze heten: Keel Beach, Dooega Head, Doogort, Keem Bay (zie foto) en Golden Strand. Keel beach is het populairste strand in Achill Island. Er zijn zandduinen rond Keel beach. Onze favoriete stranden zijn Keel en Keem. Keel beach is naast een hoge cliff en een berg, de Minaun. De stranden dichtst bij onze school zijn Dooega Head en the Golden Strand. Alle stranden in Achill zijn leuk om te gaan zwemmen en heel proper. Keel heeft de hoogste golven. De meeste stranden hebben zeemeeuwen. Het langste strand in Achill is Keel. Er zijn reuzenhaaien langs de meeste van onze stranden.
Onze lessen beginnen altijd om 8:30 uur. Er is speeltijd in de voormiddag om 10:10uur die 15 minuten duurt. Na de speeltijd kunnen we een drankje drinken: chocomelk,fruitsap of melk. Het is middag om 11:40uur. Dan kan je kiezen wat je doet: ofwel ga je naar huis, ofwel blijf je op school eten. De school is op woensdag gedaan om 11:40 uur .De maandag, de dinsdag en de donderdag is het gedaan om 16:00uur .De vrijdag eindigt school om 14:55 uur. We hebben de dinsdag en woensdag 1 uurtje turnen. We krijgen dan les van juf An .De maandagmorgen gaan we gaan zwemmen. Verder hebben we op school 2 speelplaatsen: de grote en de kleine speelplaats.
In het lager onderwijs zijn er ca. 400 leerlingen en 30 leerkrachten.Onze school bestaat al 143 jaar. Dat is dus van 1865 tot nu.

On Wednesday school is completely finished at 11.40 a.m. The other days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) school is only finished at 4.00 p.m. On Friday we stop a bit earlier: at 2.55 p.m. On Tuesday and Wednesday we have one our gymnastic of mrs. Ann. On Monday morning, we go swimming.
At our school, there are two playgrounds: a little one and a big one. There are about 400 pupils and 30 teachers. Our school exists already for 143 years (from 1865, until now).
Achill situated in the world/ Achill, gelegen op de wereld.
Achill Island is in the West of Ireland. It is 55degeres north of the equator and 10 degrees west. In Achill there is a bridge that connects the island to the mainland. Here in Achill now we are in the process of making a new bridge.In Achill we also have a Deserted Village. Families lived there years ago. There are still Houses here but they are in ruins. The houses were very small. One house is about the size of my bedroom. The houses were situated on boggy land. Approximately 3,000 people live in the Achill area.

Het ligt op 55 graden ten Noorden van de evenaar en 10 graden ten Westen van de nulmeridiaan.
In Achill is er een brug dat het eiland verbindt met het vasteland.
Hier in Achill zijn we nu bezig met een nieuwe brug te bouwen. We hebben ook een Verlaten Dorp.
Hele families leefden daar jaren geleden. Er zijn nog steeds huizen maar het zijn nu ruines. De huizen waren heel klein. Een huis is ongeveer de grootte van mijn slaapkamer. De huizen waren gebouwd op veenland.

Let’s introduce ourselves and our school.
We are the pupils from Saula N.S. We are in a room with 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th class together. Our principal and classroom teacher is Ms. Thornton. We only have two classrooms in the school. The other room has junior infants, senior infants, 1st and 2nd class. Their teacher is Ms. McLoughlin. There are 30 pupils in our school.
We also have a special teacher Lieve. She is the one that does this project with us.
Every one of us is going to introduce themselves and we will add a picture with each and one of us. The individual photo’s can not go on the blog because of our school rule of privacy!! Only photo’s of groups of children can go on and only from the children that have the consent of their parents.

Zoals we afgesproken hebben om een correspondentie op te zetten tussen onze school, dat is Saula National School en jullie school, hier is dan onze eerste brief.
Laat ons onszelf even introduceren en ook onze school.
Wij zijn de kinderen van Saula N.S. We zitten in een klas met het 3de, 4de, 5de en 6de leerjaar samen. Onze directeur en klasleerkracht is Mevr. Thornton. We hebben maar twee klaslokalen in onze school. In de andere klas zitten de junior kleuters, de senior kleuters, het 1ste en 2de leerjaar. Hun leerkracht is Mevr. McLoughlin. Er zijn 30 kinderen in onze school. We hebben ook een extra leerkracht; Lieve. Zij is degene die dit project doet met ons.
Elk van ons gaat zichzelf introduceren en we zullen een foto van elk van ons meesturen. Deze foto’s kunnen echter niet op de blog omwille van de schoolregel betreffende privacy. Enkel groepsfoto’s zijn mogelijk en dan alleen van kinderen van wie de ouders toestemming gegeven hebben.
Klas 5B stelt zich voor/ Class 5B present themselves
Hallo leerlingen in Ierland. Dit jaar zullen wij heel wat contact met jullie hebben. Maar vooraleer we over heel wat gebeurtenissen in school schrijven stellen we ons en de klas eventjes voor: Onze klas heet 5B. We zijn met 21 leerlingen(12 meisjes en 9 jongens). Op maandag, dinsdag, woensdag en donderdag krijgen we les van meester Guido en op vrijdag krijgen we les van meester Jens, die ons helpt met de blog. Meester Jens geeft ons iedere vrijdag een muzische dag. We krijgen dan alle muzische vakken (beeldopvoeding, muzikale opvoeding, drama,…). Dat is best leuk. We hebben tijdens de muzische dag reeds zelfportretten gemaakt en een mooi klasvriendenboek. Iedere morgen bidden we. We richten ons dan naar het kruisbeeld. We zijn namelijk een katholieke school. Soms gaan we daarom ook met de hele school naar de kerk. In het begin van het jaar hebben we heel wat schoolgerief gekregen zoals: potloden, latten, balpennen,…. Onze school bestaat uit twee vestigingen. In vestiging 1 zitten het eerste, tweede en derde leerjaar. In vestiging 2 zitten dan het vierde, vijfde (wij dus) en het zesde leerjaar. Af en toe komen de twee vestigingen samen voor een regenboogmoment. Wat dat is vertellen we jullie zeker en vast later op de blog. Op dinsdag krijgen we godsdienstles van meester Paul en diezelfde dag krijgen we ook turnen van juffrouw Ann. Vanaf december gaan we in die les ook gaan zwemmen. In onze klas hebben we buiten alle leerlingen nog twee andere vrienden. Het zijn twee vissen, eigenlijk dus een beetje onze klasdieren. We hebben verder ook een hele leuke speelplaats waar we tijdens de speeltijd of ’s middags als het niet regent met heel wat spelkoffers waarin heel wat leuke materialen zitten mee kunnen spelen. Ziezo, nu hebben we onze klas kort voorgesteld. We hopen dat jullie ons nu een beetje beter hebben leren kennen en dat we ook jullie via de blog mogen leren kennen.

Hello, pupils in Ireland. This year we will meet each other on a blog. Before writing about things that happen in our school, we’ll introduce ourselves and our class: Our class is 5b. There are 21 pupils (12 girls and 9 boys). On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday our teacher is mr.Guido but on Friday, mr. Jens comes. He helps us by making the blog. Every Friday (with mr. Jens) we have a creative day. Then we draw and construct, we sing, we act,… We like this very much. During one of those days, we made already a painting of ourselves and a nice book with all the information of the children of the class. Every morning we pray. Then we look at the crucifix. We are a Catholic school. Sometimes we go with the whole school to the church. At the beginning of the school year, we got a lot of things to use in the class: pencils, lats, pens,…In our school there are two buildings. In the first building, you find the pupils of the 1st, 2nd and 3th class. In the second building, you find the 4th, 5th and 6th class. Sometimes we come together with the whole school. We call such a moment a “regenboogmoment” (= “rainbowmoment”). We will tell you about this on the blog. On Thursday mr. Paul comes. He teaches us religion and on the same day we have P.E. of ms. Ann. In December we will go swimming during the gym lessons. In our class we also have two other friends. They are fishes, our “class pets”. On our school we also have a very nice playground. We play there with buckets. In every bucket there are a lot of things to play with. For now, we presented our class. We hope you will know us a bit better and we will know you by making the blog.
