Peregrine falcon egg hatches at University of Leeds

The first peregrine falcon egg of the year has hatched at Leeds University.

Peregrine falcons have been nesting on the university's Parkinson Tower since 2018, but last year's eggs failed to hatch.

Four eggs have been laid this year and the first chick emerged from its shell on Wednesday afternoon, with the moment captured on the university's live stream.

The eggs which failed to hatch last year can still be seen in the nesting area, now bleached with age.

The birds of prey are capable of reaching over 200mph (321 km/h) when hunting and can be spotted around the university.
