Wild swimmers raise concerns over untreated sewage in NI waterways

Wild swimmers in Northern Ireland have expressed concern over the amount of untreated sewage entering waterways.

NI Water, a government-owned firm that provides water and sewerage services, confirmed to BBC News NI more than 20 million tonnes of untreated sewage was being spilled each year.

Ruby Free, a wild swimmer and anti-pollution campaigner, said she feels unsafe not knowing what is in the water.

"I try my best to avoid getting in when I think it's going to be a load of heavy pollutants in the water, but the problem is I really don't know at the moment," she said.
