St George and the dragon come to Carnon Downs

St George and the dragon have resumed their eternal struggle - on top of a Cornish post box.

The yarn creation is the latest piece of wool art to go on show in Carnon Downs, Cornwall.

Joy Macdonald and the members of the Carnon Downs Crafters Group make the post box toppers.

Previously, they have made a Native Birds of Britain topper for spring and a King Charles and Queen Camilla for the Royal Coronation last year.

Joy, 64, said: "It's very much a tradition now. I do a new one every month."

Lesley Rance made the St George figure, unveiled before St George's Day on 23 April, while Joy created the dragon for the April topper.

"The dragon was easy for me, I've made them before so I already had the pattern," said Joy.

"The village has come to expect it. When I go into the shop there, everyone is asking me: 'What's the new design going to be?'"

In 2022, the village craft group made international headlines when they crocheted thousands of poppies in tribute to the fallen soldiers and horses of World War One, using a steel-framed horse as its centrepiece.
