Moeder van Nathan spreekt: "Zijn dood doet me niks"

Een dag nadat Het Laatste Nieuws het verhaal bracht van Nathan Verhelst (44), die geboren werd als Nancy en maandag euthanasie kreeg na een mislukte geslachtsoperatie, reageert zijn moeder op het overlijden. Wanneer Nathan sprak over het gebrek aan ­liefde dat hij thuis kreeg, sloeg hij de nagel op de kop.

"Toen ik 'Nancy' voor het eerst zag, viel mijn droom in duigen. Ze was zó lelijk", vertelt de moeder aan onze krant. "Ik had een spook ­gebaard. Haar dood doet me niets."

De brief die Nathan vlak voor z'n dood opstuurde naar zijn moeder, was gisteren nog niet aangekomen. "Ik zal hem zeker lezen", zegt de moeder, "maar hij zal wel vol leugens staan. Voor mij is dit hoofdstuk afgesloten. Haar dood doet me niks. Ik voel geen verdriet, geen twijfel of berouw. We hebben nooit een band gehad, die kon dus ook niet verbroken worden."  (br.hln)
