Half dolls zijn meestal porseleinen popjes die worden geproduceerd zonder beentjes, zodat ze kunnen worden bevestigd aan iets anders zoals aan speldenkussens, poederdozen, lampen en aan tal van andere zaken . Als er beentjes werden gebruikt dan werden ze er apart aan bevestigd .

De meeste half dolls werden geproduceerd in Duitsland, door bedrijven zoals Dressel & Kister, FW Goebel, Ernst, Bohne & Söhne, Heubach, Hertwig, Karl Schnider en vele anderen. Japan overspoelden de markt met goedkopere modellen. Nu nog worden de dolls  geproduceerd en vaak als antiek verkocht.
De meeste hoofdjes zijn tussen de 2 en 6 cm hoog, al zijn er ook kleiner en  grotere exemplaren te vinden.

Half dolls zijn meestal gemaakt van porselein , maar er zijn ook modellen gemaakt in ongeglazuurde biscuit,  was en andere materialen.
Half dolls worden vaak gemarkeerd met " Made in Germany", of met een vier of vijf cijfer nummer. Modellen uit Japan kunnen worden gemarkeerd  met "Japan" of "Made in Japan."

Nu nog worden de dolls  geproduceerd en vaak als antiek verkocht. Zoals vele zaken trouwens.
