Twee ton ivoor van 150 olifanten onderschept in Kenia

Op de luchthaven van de Keniaanse hoofdstad Nairobi heeft de douane met behulp van speurhonden twee ton ivoor onderschept. Volgens de Keniaanse overheid gaat het om de grootste vangst van ivoor in de afgelopen jaren.


De illegale vracht zat verstopt onder een lading fruit met bestemming Maleisië. Het ivoor, zeer gewild in Aziatische landen, is afkomstig van meer dan 150 olifanten en is vermoedelijk verzameld over een periode van twintig jaar. In de twaalf houten kratten die in beslag zijn genomen, lagen ook de hoorns van vijf neushoorns.

Kenia telt op dit moment ruim 38.000 olifanten. De populatie is zich nog altijd aan het herstellen van de jaren waarin er nog geen sprake was van een jachtverbod. De enorme zoogdieren zijn een zeer belangrijke toeristentrekker voor het Oost-Afrikaanse land.
