Een kip uit het Engelse Huntingdon is langzaam van geslacht veranderd.

Kip Gertie verraste eigenares Jeanette Howard en haar man Jim toen ze plots stopte met het leggen van eieren, een grotere kam kreeg en als een haan probeerde te kraaien.
"Ik hoorde hoe ze probeerde te kraaien. Eerst lukte het niet goed, maar ze maakte goede vooruitgang en nu gaat ze er echt voor", aldus Howard.
Hormonen

Volgens gevogelte-dierenarts Marion Ford is een geslachtsverandering bij kippen niet ongebruikelijk. Volgens haar zouden mycotoxines (giftige stofwisselingsproducten van schimmels) in het eten hetzelfde effect als synthetische hormonen kunnen hebben en daarmee aan de oorzaak van de plotse geslachtsverandering liggen. "Een toename van de hoeveelheid testosteron zal resulteren in het groeien van de kam, grotere lellen en haan-achtig gedrag, inclusief pronken en kraaien", aldus Ford.
