Neushoorns steeds vaker doelwit van stropers
Stropers doden steeds meer neushoorns in Afrika. Vorig jaar werden er zeker 745 dieren illegaal afgeschoten, een stijging met 43 procent ten opzichte van 2011. Dit jaar sneuvelen er tot nu meer dan twee neushoorns per dag door stroperij.
Als het in dit tempo doorgaat, dreigen de neushoorns uit te sterven, meldde de internationale natuurorganisatie IUCN vandaag. Dat geldt vooral voor de zwarte neushoorn waarvan er in Afrika naar schatting nog zo'n 5000 exemplaren rondlopen.
Volgens de in Zwitserland gevestigde organisatie zitten achter de stroperij goed georganiseerde criminele organisaties. De illegale handel in hoorns van de dieren is lucratief. In Aziatische landen, zoals China en Vietnam, worden hoorns verwerkt in traditionele medicijnen. Vooral in Vietnam is de vraag explosief gestegen, aldus IUCN. (br.hln)
