We, the Stellenbosch branch of Students for Law and Social Justice, express our dismay at the Red October campaign and the views which it advances in the name of “The White South African Ethnic Minority”.
The Red October Campaign protests against the “inhuman slaughter and oppression of white people in South Africa” and claims that white South Africans are victims of “racist Black Economic Empowerment and Affirmative Action policies”, a “pathetic educational system” and “dangerous neighbourhoods”.
These statements ignore the realities of post-Apartheid South Africa, in which black South Africans continue to carry the overwhelming burden of socio-economic disadvantage and violent crime. Statistics in an AfricaCheck report released earlier this year show that only 1.8% of murder victims in South Africa are white, despite whites making up 9% of the population. Thus, underlying the campaign, is the racist assumption of Apartheid thinking that the life of a white person has more value than the life of a black person.
We, as a body of students who are still predominantly white and Afrikaans, reject the Red October Campaign. It ignores the Rule of Law and the provision in the Constitution for affirmative action to redress past disadvantage. It is repugnant both to black South Africans and to white South Africans who are committed to the values and objectives of the Constitution, and deeply damaging to the multiracial society based on equality which we are building.
