Blog from Bruges
Bruges inside out
Foto
A (photo-) blog about the beautiful Belgian town Bruges
as seen through the very two eyes of an inhabitant.
Sharp, witty,  and... always admiring.

Today, the Renault Oldtimer Club of Bruges held its inaugural drive. They did not hesitate to drive right through the inner city. After which they probably regrouped at the Zand. The club allows all antique cars to participate, but they do prefer to have mainly old Renault for the event. There were even Renault owners who came from France and The Netherlands with their antique vehicles.

... was this photo taken? 1940, 1950 or 1960? Wrong, it was taken this morning, the last day of April 2006. Today, the Renault Oldtimers Club of Bruges held its inaugural ride. I did follow them for a while, on my bicycle. They could not drive very fast in any event, because they were driving along the circuit used by the coaches. I must say that, during the timespan that I did follow these cars, none of them suffered breakdown but, the exhaust system of some of the old crackers was anything but environmentally friendly (stench & noise). However, admittedly, it is a beautiful sight to see them driving through Groening (the street, not the museum, even though some of the cars certainly deserve to be in the museum.)

Our daily sequence on the Sacred Blood Procession. As was the case yesterday, one picture is not enough, simply because this series represents the story of the Garden of Eden, the temptation, and God chasing Adam and Eve from paradise.
The figures at the right represent the temptation of Adam and Eve. At regular intervals along the procession, the figures go traipsing around Adam and Eve who fall under their spell..

Bruges is what one calls a "hand-on-city". In Bruges you can try and do all sorts of things. That seems to be modern way, adapted to the times. For instance, to make it clear to you : wherever you see a waterpump, you can grab its handle and start pumping. With luck, water may come spouting out. But not any more with this one. However, Water or no water, this lady seems to enjoy it anyway. And before her, and after her, by the dozens people will pump. Tourists, here you are, as seen by Blog from Bruges.

Klik op de afbeelding om de link te volgen
Did you notice that the coach-drivers of Bruges like to ride in groups? In normal circumstances, their point of departure is on the Market and along the way, they make a halt on the Wijngaard square. The horse gets a drink of water and a ration of oats, the passengers of the coach get a chance to stretch their legs, to take in the beauty of their surroundings and  tosnap some photos. The coach-drivers seem to like gathering at the Wijngaard square (to have a chat with one another? because being a coach is a lonesome affair? I have no idea, I am just wondering.)  They usually leave the Wijngaard square in groups, and at rather full speed, drive back towards the center of the city. There seems to be an abundance of coaches here. Or was this some record? When I took this photo, there were fully ten of them and it seems as if the Wijngaard square could barely hold them all.

Jotie ‘t Hooft..Some do laud him as being the Jim Morrison of Flanders, because of a same lifestyle and similar untimely drug-induced death and the cult, nearly thirty years after the facts, is still very much alive. Jotie’s grave, in Audenaarde ( graf in Oudenaarde ), attracts numerous visitors who very often leave a small token of their admiration. Here, in Bruges, though, nobody ever pays attention to this street. And yet, it is here, in a small room, that on 5 or 6 October 1977, the barely 21-year old died from a fatal shot of cocaine. His friend Christian R. Drove didn’t lose any time in driving Jotie to the Saint-Lucas Hospital in Assebroek, where he simply dumped Jotie at the entrance of the Emergency Service and then sped away in his BMW. Jotie ‘t Hooft was immediately rushed into Reanimation but, it was too late. Jotie died early in the morning on October 6, 1977.

Opinions about Jotie’s writings are varied. One fact remains : his compilation of poems titled ."Schreeuwlandschap" (Screamlandscape) landed him in the world of the literary prize. One short commentary by Jeroen Brouwers reads as follows : "Jotie’s job at Manteau Publishers was that of youngest employee, a gofer (...). He was unfit for secretarial work or article-writing - in fact, he preferred to keep busy with his own affairs in his small occife . (...) Jotie never bothered anybody more did the resident cat." Just to make you understand the situation : Jotie was married with the daughter of publisher Julien Weverbergh and thus, Jotie’s job was a given. One more comment by Jeroen Brouwers, about Jotie’s literary talent " " He felt overwhelmed by his success from the very start. He wanted to work at it seriously. (...) Jotie ‘t Hooft was, in fact, kissed to death by the public. (...) When you do away with all the biographical sensationalism around Jotie, what remains is a rather primitive poetry, and neither theme nor motive have any original content." All comments are from Brouwer’s book "De Laatste Deur" (The Last Door) (1983).

"One day I shall be gone and then what?

Disappeared without giving or taking a sign

and the ruin I will leave behind is no

longer a cause for laughter."

Jotie 't Hooft

If you are travelling with a group to Bruges, you can prevail yourselves of the services of a flesh-and-blood guide, rather than a paper-guide. It does not matter how hard the guide will try to capture the attention of everybody in the group - this one even went as far as climbing on a post - her comments will be lost to all the amateur-photographers. This is not an isolated insstance. In fact, it happens all the time. And thus, back home with their beautiful pictures, those photographers will see where they have been, without having really been there.

It's no use to try and explore this building on your own. Every entrance to this building, back of the Ezelstreet (the Doneky street) has been bricked up. Last year, though, one could still go inside. What you see here is the inner court. It is quite visible that the uppe floor is a later addition. It was added on when it was decided to use the building as barracks.

Urban Photography is a branch that specializes in recording pictures of decayed buildings. If you were to enter these two words in your browser, you would find that numerous people are specializinbg in this particular type of photography. I am not specifically an urban photographer, but I have explored such buildings in Bruges, now and again. After all, that too is Bruges. I already posted a photo of this building (April 10, 2006). It was built for the Theresians, or the Caremelites. You will find more photos at  Grijze Blubber.

Monks' work, monks' patience.... looking at this makes us understand the origin of these expressions a bit better. This was part of the exhibition in the Great Seminary on Heritage Day. Remember, the theme was "Colour". This sample here is a double page of a codex from the Duinenandij (Abbey of the Dunes) which was handwritten and illuminated around the year 1200. How long might it have taken to write just one such page?
