"In het dorp WEDDE ( provincie Groningen) staat het "Huis te Wedde." De naam dateert uit een tijdperk, waarin plaggenhutten regel waren en met een stenen huis ( ook steenhuis, steinhaus of stins genoemd ) meestal een versterking werd bedoeld.In de volksmond heet het ook wel "de Burcht." Het kasteeltje staat binnen een omraming van hoge bomen, omgeven door een slotgracht."
In 1568 werd het kasteel ingenomen door de graven van Nassau ( Willem en Lodewijk, Hendrik en Adolf van Nassau ) bij het begin van de Tachtigjarige oorlog, die duurde van 1568 - 1648 en eindigde met de Vrede van Munster. Graaf Adolf stierf in de slag bij Heiligerlee in 1568.In het vierde couplet van Het Wilhelmus, wordt dit beschreven : "Graaf Adolf is gebleven in Friesland in den slag, Zijn ziel in 't eeuwig leven Verwacht den jongsten dag." Thans zetelt de Streekraad Oost-Groningen in het gebouw.
