"I was always in pretty good shape," he states.
Growing up, McDonald was constantly on the go, spending the majority of his time outside and playing sports. After high school, he even played football for the University of South Dakota. While he am active, McDonald didn't have to worry about what he ate or what he weighed.
But because they got older, the 31-year-old Harrisburg man says, his lifestyle changed a little, and that he wasn't as active as he was once. Work and family became more of a priority.
"I marry three and a half years ago, and it turns out my wife is a pretty good cook," McDonald says with a laugh.
McDonald had no idea he was slowly putting on the weight.
But last October, throughout an annual health screening the city of Sioux Falls offers its employees, McDonald, a forestry caretaker using the Parks and Recreation Department, discovered he was about 20 pounds heavier than he'd ever been.
The health screenings are part of the city's Healthy green lean body capsule Lifestyles program, says Rana DeBoer, work nicely manager. Employees have the opportunity to meet by having an Avera Health professional to have their blood pressure level, cholesterol, glucose levels and weight checked, she says.
