Dutch Old School Punk

Maandag 11 oktober 2010

In my opinion the Bugs were the best Amsterdam punkband from '78-'83. In that period they played the famous Paradiso venue 53 times, frequently supporting famous bands like the Police. During that period they only realeased a 12'' record "Emotion" and a 7'' single "Amstel". Although there were a lot of live tapes recorded, that material was never released. Until 2007, when they released their "Live in Paradiso '78-'81'' (availabe from: www.bugsparadiso.com/index.htm).
This is a 1978 demotape. Unfortunately, the tape is from very poor quality. Nevertheless you can experience the quality and originality of the band.

Infexion

Infexion was undoubtly one of the best Amsterdam punkbands from the late 70's. Formed around Carlo Edel, former "Motorboat" and later "the Bugs'', they became the "houseband" of the DDT club. They also played at the "worldfamous" punkfestival in de Bakkerij in Castricum. This file contains a demo (PLO, Cool.o.k., Dumb dumb cop and My family). The intention was to make a 7'' single, but the songs never made it to vinyl. Also included a live performance in Paradiso, 16-02-1980, supporting the Buzzcocks (?), taped with a cassetterecorder from the audience. As far as I know these are the only recordings of the band.

Panic

In the end of 1978 a Rock Against Racism festival was organised in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Amongst others the English band Crass an the Dutch band "Panic" performed. The lead singer of Panic came on stage wearing a "Sinterklaas"-outfit (Duch equivalent of Santa Claus). Underneath his rope he had firework, what he let of at the beginning. It caused him second degree chestburns, which was cooled by the crowd with Heineken lager.

Why this blog

In the late 70's/early 80's there were a lot of Dutch punkbands performing in small clubs in Holland. Most of them never made it to a record contract. But their music appeared not to be lost. They taped their own rehearsals, gigs, and some of them brought out their music on self produced records (with a limited number of copies, mostly sold at gigs). Nowadays, a lot of that music can be found on the internet, to be heard for old- and new punks. A journey back to the early days of Dutch punk......

Ivy Green

Ivy Green was one of the first Dutch punk bands. The band was founded in 1975 and played a simple, raw rock and roll, effortlessly joined in 1977 -coming punk craze. Their debut album was labeled as the "definitive Dutch punk record" (1978, WEA). Before this album they released a single-sided 7'', "Wap Shoo Wap", later appeared on the album as "I'm sure we're gonna make it". Well....they did!
