TWO OF LISBON'S HOTELS AMONGST BEST IN THE WORLD. LISBON's LAPA PALACE and the RITZ FOUR SEASONS are amongst the world's finest hotels, according to Forbes Traveler Magazine, wich compoled a list of the 400 best hotels around the globe. Also on the list, which wa put together by 79 international luxury travel specialists, was REID'S PALACE, Funchal Madeira. To participate in the survey, the specialists had to fill two criteria : to have slept in 20 or more five star hotels over the past 18 months, and not to have economic connections with any of them. Room service, bedrooms and bathrooms, decoration food, leisure activities and location were a few other key points evaluated by the specialists, who in total visited around 800 four and five star hotels. According to an extensive report published by WHO (World Health Organisation), life expectancy is almost ten years more than it was three decades ago. According to the organisation,this astonishing improvement in life expectancy rates is due "thanks to one of the worlds" most successfull performances in reducing mortality. The report also found that Portugal now has the 11th HIGHEST LIFE EXPECTANCY RATE IN THE WORLD. Meanwhile, according to WHO, Portugal's succes is the result of development of a nationwide primary health care system. WHO further praises the network of health centres staffed by physicians and nurses which have progressively covered the country in recent years. Portugal considers this to be its greatest succes in terms of improved acces to care and health gains, WHO says. " PORTUGAL'S TOERISME" BEST IN EUROPE. Ongeveer 167.000 reisagentschappen brachten hun stem uit voor de toekenning van de 15º Wereld Reisonderscheiding, beter gekend als " TOURISM OSCARS". En Toerisme Portugal werd primus in de categorie Europese Commissie Toerisme. Om deze eerste plaats in de wacht te slepen, moest PORTUGAL toeristische organisaties van Frankrijk, Duitsland, Griekenland, Spanje, Italie, Turkije en Het Verenigd Koninkrijk achter zich houden. THE CASCAIS ' TYPICAL SAILING VESSEL - THE "CHATA" ( FLATBOAT. As a country with ancient maritime traditions, that has glanced out to sea since the birth of the nation, Portugal ha a tremendous variety of traditional sailing vessels, many of which are associated to a specific type of fishing seafaring art or geographic location. In this context, the municipality of CASCAIS assumes an extremely important role, given its privileged geographical position at the entrance to the TAGUS estuary and near the nation's capital, more or less half way up Portugal's long coastline. Cascais also has its own traditional vessel - the "CHATA" (Flatboat). The "CHATAS" were extremely common in Cascais'fishing port, and were also found along the Estoril Coast until Pedrouços (Alges). The "CHATAS" were generaly painted in bright colours, with green or blue sides, white band and black rubrail, among other possible combinations and were frequently baptised with familiar names or religious references. The flatboats normaly sailed to sea with two or three men - the "Master" (the boat's owner or close family member) and one or two companions, above all when sardine fishing.They transported various items of fishing equipment on board including fine-meshed nets such as the "sardinheira", for sardines. & cages for catching shellfish such as lobster,crayfish,king-Crab and spider Crab. It was possible to go fishing on board the "Chata" throughout the year, generally in the shoal (up to 2 miles from the coast).During Autumn and winter, when the sea was rougher and shoals of sardines approched the Bay of Cascais, the master would rarely venture beyond the Cabo Raso, and instead concentrated his energies on fishing in more sheltered waters. In the Spring an Summer, when the weather and sea were less mischievous, the "Chatas" would venture beyond the Cabo do Roca, in search of various types of shelfisch on the rocky sea bottoms found in those areas. Vorige week opende, nog maar eens , een nieuwe Gastronomische zaak in het centrum van Cascais. Op de meest gekende centrale ligging, de LARGO LUIS de CAMOES in het Edificio Baia Center - Piso 2. " METRO PIAZZA " ITALIAN CUISINE is fier om nu ook in Portugal hun gespecialiseerde manier in bereiding van Pizza's te introduceren. Alles op de uitgebreide menukaart , van starters, verse salads,keuze uit 15 pizza's, tot het gamma "warme schotels" zijn prijs/kwaliteit met beroepskennis uiterts fijn samengesteld. De "House Wine" is portugees, aangevuld met een grote keuze Italiaanse streekwijnen (Toscana, Veneto, Piemonte, Lazio, Romagna enz...! De Sangria A MODE DA CASA ontbreekt niet. Traditioneel is de maand Augustus jaarlijks het hoogtepunt in het leven van de Cascais Vissers. Van 22 tot en met 31 augustus hebben hun FESTAS DO MAR plaats. Er is straatanimatie, strandspelen, kinderanimatie, Fotographiewedstrijd, artesanato,gastronomie, en een variatie aan spektakel.Het hoogtepunt is een optreden van hun meest geliefde portugese vedette uit de show business Tonny Carreira. Het drie-daags vuurwerk boven de baai op vrij-zat.-en zondag middernacht is het orgelpunt. Het trekt elk jaar duizenden bezoekers, die van alle attrakties komen genieten.
