Aan de IJzer
We sliepen in boerenschuren. Daar er geen eten was, deed de commandant een boer brood bakken. We lagen achter de Ijzer. ’s Nachts trokken enkele soldaten de wacht op. De anderen zochten slaapgelegenheid in schuren en hooizolders. Ik lag op een zolder boven een koestal. Mijn geweer lag naast mij. Op een nacht werd er plots geroepen “”Aux armes, aux armes, les Boches sont là”. Ik sprong naar buiten en wat ik voor de weg hield was de Karpervaart. Ik viel er hals over kop in en nog voelde ik geen bodem. Toen ik terug boven kwam sloeg ik wild met armen en benen en mijn geweer deed goede dienst. Ik kon niet zwemmen, maar toch geraakte ik aan de kant. Een soldaat die mijn gespartel hoorde kwam toegesneld en stak zijn geweer naar mij uit; Maar het was niet meer nodig. Ik had reeds greep aan de oever. We liepen naar de loopgracht achter De Ijzer. Ik had het ontzettend koud en klappertande tot ’s anderendaags negen uur.
Op een zondagnacht om 2 u werden we gewekt en stapten naar Schore. Onze compagnie vatte post rechts van Schore.
Bij het krieken van de dag kwam een afdeling lansiers voorbij. Achterop reden 3 Transvalers met hoge, brede hoeden. Er volgde nog een groep cyclisten. Tegen de middag kwamen enkele lansiers en ook paarden zonder ruiter terug aangestormd. De cyclisten koersten ook voorbij.
Later op de middag verschenen de Duitsers. Op een 500m voor ons zaten er een 30tal in een weide. Terwijl de ene schoot trachtte de andere een put te graven, een moeilijke karwei in de zware Poldergrond. Ik mikte vast en zeker en er bleven mannen liggen. Na een tijdje trokken zij zich terug wegens te grote verliezen.
Op een 50 tal m lag er een bietenveld. Plots begon er een Duitser van daaruit te schieten. De aarde van de loopgracht spatte in mijn ogen. De man lag al in een putje en ik kon hem niet zien. Ik schoot terug in zijn richting. De jongen naast mij durfde niet schieten en hij gaf mij zijn 180 patronen.
Nogmaals kwamen de Duitsers opzetten. Van achter een hofstede kwamen er telkens 12 man gelopen. Ze vormden een brede ketting. Vier uur lang werd er geschoten. Ik had nog 15 kogels over van de 360 (180+180) toen er geroepen werd “à la retraite, à la retraite.” Er liepen er reeds velen voor mij. We moesten op de weg lopen wegens al die grachten in weiden en velden naast de weg. Voor mij werd een soldaat geschoten. Het was de jongen die naast mij had gezeten en niet durfde schieten, een zekere Patrick van Poperinge. Soldaat Ceuninck van Zillebeke bleef bij hem staan. Velen liepen voorbij. Ik kwam er ook aandraven. Ceuninck riep “We zullen hem meedragen”. Hij was geschoten in zijn achterwerk. We zetten hem op zijn geweer en hij sloeg zijn armen rond onze hals. We sukkelden voort met onze last, want het was een grote, felle gast van een goede 80 kg.
Aan Schoorbakkebrug over De Ijzer ontfermden een Belgische en een Engelse dokter zich over hem. Ik was helemaal nat van het zweet.
Onze compagnie werd terug verzameld en wij trokken naar het “Oogsthof”, dicht tegen de spoorweg naar Veurne. We lagen in de schuur. In de kap zat een observateur met kijker. Achter de spoorweg stonden 2 kanonnen. Hij riep door de telefoon “La première pièce va tirer sur seize cent mètres.” Een schot kraakte los en we hoorden de obus boven onze hoofden wegsuizen. Opnieuw “La deuxième pièce va tirer sur quinze cent mètres”. Wat was dat lawaai? We gingen buiten kijken. Het kanon had de schouw van de hofstede weggeschoten.
Kort daarop werd er door de Duitsers teruggeschoten. ’t Donderde, ’t spetterde en ’t vlamde overal rond. De mannen kropen dicht tegen elkaar. Een obus viel op de mestvaalt en de mest werd door de openstaande deur binnen geslingerd.
Een tijdje later kregen we het bevel op te rukken naar De Ijzer. Majoor Turck liep voorop. Luitenant Demets volgde en ik zag dat hij weende. Ik liep in vierde positie in de rij.
De Duitse kanonnen vuurden in feu rapide, 4 salvo’s ineens.
Aan de watering de Grote Renne lagen vier paarden met hun ruiter dood. We kwamen bij De Ijzer. ’t Liep tegen de avond en we losten de grenadiers af die in een zwaar bombardement hadden gezeten.
We bezetten het bruggenhoofd van Schoorbakke en zaten in een loopgracht. Majoor Turck stond recht door zijn verrekijker te spieden. De Duitsers naderden. “Jongens schieten” riep hij in het Vlaams. Kort daarop werd hij zelf getroffen. Twee mannen droegen hem weg. Wij liepen een eindje mee. Ik hoorde de commandant nog zeggen “’t is niets voor mij; jammer voor mijn vrouw en kinderen”. Wij moesten weer terug. De commandant werd graag gezien door de Vlaamse jongens.
Ik moest even een wandeling maken in het donker. Ik liet mij naar de bedding van de stroom zakken. Daar zag ik een grenadier liggen. Die slaapt zeker? Ik trok aan zijn mantel maar hij werd niet wakker. Ik voelde met mijn hand aan zijn gezicht. Koud.
’s Nachts hoorde ik karretjes op de kasseien van de weg naar Schore.
’s Anderendaags zag ik Duitsers aan de andere oever van De Ijzer. Bij tussenpozen loerde ik eens, mikte en schoot.
De soldaten waren opgewonden. De ene riep ”Ik heb er al 3 geschoten” Een andere “Ik heb er al 4 op hun stro gelegd”. Enz.
Daar De Ijzer daar kronkelt kon men ook in de zijde geschoten worden; dus opletten. Er waren er die zopas nog 5 hadden geroepen of hun beurt kwam.
Dan kwam het bevel achteruit te trekken. Verschillenden werden geschoten onder het lopen. Toen ik even achteruit keek zag ik de Duitsers rechtstaande op de oever van De Ijzer naar ons vuren.
Aan de Beverendijk kwamen we mannen van de 2de divisie tegen die oprukten naar de Duitsers.
Onze 1 ste divisie trok naar Veurne. Op de baan Pervijze – Ramskapelle zag ik een soldaat van ‘t 3de die een gekwetste grenadier wegbracht. Een lap vlees bengelde aan zijn achterwerk en hij was een arm kwijt. Op die baan ontmoetten we ook koning Albert met een Franse generaal. De mannen riepen “Vive le roi”. Niet ver vandaar sloegen obussen in.
Er kwam een bevel terug te keren naar de Beverdijk. Er werd geweldig geschoten. Vele hoeven stonden in brand.
Opnieuw kwam er bevel om ons terug te trekken tot achter de spoorweg. We hielden daar echter stand. De Duitsers kwamen meermalen opzetten maar werden telkens teruggeslagen. We hadden geen officieren meer.
Uiteindelijk werden we afgelost en trokken naar Koksijde-Bad.
Bij de verzameling van onze compagnie schoten er nog 21 man over van de 180. Men vormde opnieuw de compagnie met oude soldaten.
Daar heb ik mijn eerste zeeslag gezien. Ver in zee lagen 12 slagschepen die onophoudelijk schoten naar de Duitsers in Lombardsijde en Middelkerke.
Na drie dagen rust trokken we weer over Ramskapelle naar de spoorweg. Senegalezen hielden de wacht in Ramskapelle.
Langs de weg zagen we in ’t licht van de maan lijken van Duitse soldaten.
We kwamen aan de spoorlijn en gans de vlakte voor De Ijzer stond onder water. Er lagen Duitsers dood in het water. Er dreven ook dode koeien en paarden.
Veurne naars kwamen de lijken uit het water halen om ze naar massagraven te brengen. Deze burgers werden echter door de Duitsers onder vuur genomen en het bergen werd gestaakt tot het donker werd.
Naast ons lag een compagnie Franse soldaten, oudere mannen van de vesting van Duinkerke.
Aan ’t station van Ramskapelle vroegen 2 oudjes aan mij of ze naar hun huis mochten terugkeren en ik vertaalde hun verzoek aan de Franse soldaten en ze kregen de toelating. Ze trokken weg langs een kasseiweg die hoger lag en aldus niet overstroomd was.
De slag
Op 18 oktober1914 gaat de Slag om de IJzer van start. Veldmaarschalk sir John French geeft de British Expeditionary Force opdracht naar Menen en Rijsel te vertrekken, maar wordt door de Duitsers in zijn opzet gehinderd. Zuidelijk van Nieuwpoort dringen de Duitsers bij Mannekensvere door en verjagen de Belgen uit hun verdedigingslinie. 's Nachts nemen de Belgische troepen wraak en kunnen enkele posities opnieuw innemen. Hun succes is maar van korte duur, want enkele uren later worden ze weer verdreven.
Diksmuide komt onder vuur op 18 oktober1914 maar de Belgische troepen wijken niet. Ook Nieuwpoort staat in lichterlaaie. Lombardsijde wordt enkele uren later ingenomen nadat de Duitsers het Kanaal Plassendale-Nieuwpoort zijn overgestoken. Diezelfde dag moeten de Belgen bijna al hun voorposten opgeven. En op 20 oktober1914 staan de Duitsers aan de IJzer.
De volgende dag vallen de Duitsers Tervate aan en slagen erin een loopbrug over de IJzer te leggen en een bruggenhoofd te vormen op de linkeroever. Ze dreigen door te stoten naar Duinkerke en de situatie wordt kritiek voor de Belgische verdediging. Zeker voor de volgende dagen want ook de 2e verdedigingslinie wordt bedreigd als de Duitsers hun posities op de linkeroever weten te verstevigen.
Op 25 oktober 1914 wordt de situatie zo kritiek dat Koning Albert, de opperbevelhebber van het Belgische leger, besluit om de polder tussen de IJzer en de spoorweg Nieuwpoort-Diksmuide onder water te zetten. Onderzoeksrechter Feys had Kolonel Wielemans van het Belgisch hoofdkwartier gewezen op een oud plan voor inundatie dat toen aanleiding had gegeven tot het betalen van vergoedingen aan boeren. Overigens waren vrijwel alle inwoners van het poldergebied van de IJzervlakte zich bewust van de mogelijkheden van inundaties als onderdeel van militaire defensieve operaties. Ook het Belgische Leger zelf was vertrouwd met de militaire waarde van onderwaterzettingen. Inundaties waren een onderdeel van de vesting Antwerpen. Op 21 oktober was reeds een deel van de polder Noord van de IJzer onder water gezet door aan het sluizencomplex van Nieuwpoort de verlaten van de Kreek van Nieuwendamme te openen. Het plan zelf wordt opgesteld door de staf van het Belgische leger. Het leger was echter niet vertrouwd met de plaatselijke situatie. Daarom wordt beroep gedaan op Karel Cogge, als raadgever. Hij was toezichter bij de Noord Watering Veurne, het geheel van grachten, sloten en vaarten dat de IJzervlakte Zuid van De IJzer ontwatert, en vertrouwd met elk détail van de watering. In de nacht van 28 op 29 oktober 1914 worden bij vloed de verlaten van Veurne-Ambacht aan de Ganzepoot in Nieuwpoort geopend door een peloton Belgische soldaten. Hendrik Geeraert, een burger die al hielp bij de allereerste inundatie op 21 oktober, is er ook hier bij. Het zeewater stroomt krachtig door de Veurne-Ambacht verlaten in de Noordvaart en verspreidt zich verder door de sloten en grachten over de polder. De sluizen worden weer gesloten wanneer het water in de Noordvaart even hoog staat als het niveau van de zee. Dat maneuver wordt bij de volgende hoge getijden, om de twaalf uur, nog enkele keren herhaald. Ondertussen worden Pervijze, Ramskapelle, Nieuwpoort en Diksmuide onophoudelijk gebombardeerd. Om redenen waarover men enkel kan speculeren hebben de Duitsers het belang van het sluizencomplex en de mogelijkheden tot inundatie niet erkend. Pas wanneer de polder in een ontoegankelijke watervlakte is veranderd en hun troepen Zuid van de IJzer hopeloos vast zitten, geven ze zich rekenschap van het gebeurde.
Op 29 oktober 1914 valt Diksmuide na hevige gevechten op de spoorweg Nieuwpoort-Diksmuide. De Duitse generaal Erich von Falkenhayn, chef van de Duitse generale staf, heeft ondertussen de sterkte van zijn 4e en 6e leger opgebouwd om na de IJzer de havens van Calais en Boulogne in te kunnen nemen. Op deze manier hebben de Duitsers een voordeel van 6-tegen-1.
Op 30 oktober1914 wordt de tweede Belgische verdedigingslinie toch gebroken door een aanval tussen Nieuwpoort en Rijsel door de Duitse 5e reservedivisie. Als ze Pervijze en Ramskapelle proberen in te nemen stuiten ze op hevige tegenaanvallen van de Belgen en Fransen. Ze proberen zich terug te trekken achter de IJzer maar ondertussen is het water zo gestegen dat het hele gebied rond de IJzer blank staat.
Het front aan de IJzer zit muurvast. De Duitse keizer verlaat ontmoedigd het front. Alleen rond Ieper wordt volop gestreden over de paar meters grond tussen de Duitse en Britse linies (zie Eerste Slag om Ieper).
Op 10 november1914 bezetten de Duitsers Diksmuide. Maar als het twee dagen later begint te sneeuwen, graven alle partijen zich in. Dit luidt het voorlopige einde van de strijd in.
Vanaf november trokken we de wacht op langs de spoorweg Nieuwpoort- Diksmuide; 2 dagen loopgraven , 2 dagen uitrusten te Booitshoeke bij de familie Van De Bussche.
Onze schoenen waren gans kapot. Men gaf ons een paar hoge klompen. We spraken over pettekloefen.
De wegen waren vol modder. ’t Was moeilijk gaan. Onze klompen plakten dikwijls in het slijk.
Iedere soldaat bracht altijd een bundeltje stro mee om op te liggen in de loopgracht. Dat bundeltje droeg men aan ’t uiteinde van het geweer.
De boeren kregen 21 centiem om ons te strooien. Ze strooiden ons maar weinig. Na een tijdje verbrokkelde het stro en er kwam ook ongedierte in.
In februari 1915 brak er tyfus uit. ’t Was niet anders dan kakken en een zere buik. Enkele soldaten moesten naar een hospitaal gebracht worden.
Ook in februari 1915 kregen we voor het eerst een deken. Een geluk dat het maar een lichte winter was.
Daarna gingen we op rust te Bray-Dune, voorbij De Panne.
Vooral de 2 Franse divisies zouden de gaswolk (op 22 april 1915) over zich heen krijgen. Velen stikten in de eerste lijn, anderen vluchtten in paniek weg. De chaos was compleet. Beschermd met 'Riechpäkchen' tegen het chloorgas trokken de Duitsers 15 minuten na het loslaten van het gas ten aanval. Ze trokken op tot de hoogte van Pilkem en het bos ten ZW van Sint-Juliaan ('Kitchener's Wood'). Op enkele uren tijd was een kilometerslange bres geslagen in de geallieerde verdediging. Die avond groeven de Duitse troepen zich echter in, wat tactisch gezien een kapitale fout zou betekenen, althans vanuit Duits standpunt: Ieper lag die avond namelijk voor het grijpen…. Na de gasaanval zou hevig gevochten worden in de omgeving van Steenstrate. De Belgische grenadiers, die zich de 22ste april om 17.00u ten N van Steenstratebrug bevonden, waren vreemd genoeg gespaard gebleven van de giftige gaswolk. Deze grenadiers poogden er met mitrailleursvuur, een 'winkelhaak'-opstelling en met de steun van niet-gevluchte Franse troepen, de Duitse aanvallen ter hoogte van Steenstrate tegen te houden. Niettemin slaagden de Duitsers erin het Kanaal Ieper-Ijzer over te steken. De 24ste april slaagden de Duitsers erin het gehucht Lizerne te veroveren en door te stoten richting Zuidschote. De Belgen werden nu in hun flank bedreigd, temeer de Duitsers opnieuw chloorgas inzetten. Uiteindelijk zouden Franse troepen, met de hulp van Belgische artillerie, erin slagen het gehucht Lizerne te heroveren op 27 april. Midden mei werden de Duitsers over het Kanaal teruggedreven. Bij de gevechten rond Steenstratebrug waren naast diverse Franse eenheden (o.m. 87 D.I.T., 45 D.I.T., 153 D.I.) Belgische grenadiers, karabiniers en manschappen van het 3de en 4de linieregiment betrokken.

Op 25 april 1915 begon voor ons de slag bij Steenstrate. We werden er dadelijk naartoe gestuurd. We reden met de tram; doch deze werd gebombardeerd en we moesten te voet verder naar ’t slagveld tussen Steenstrate en Boezinge brug.
We losten de grenadiers en de karabiniers af. Die hadden een ander uniform dan wij.
Ik ging op een plek in de loopgracht staan waar veel hulzen lagen. De Duitsers waren reeds in het gehucht Lizerne. Ze schoten uit een huis op 200m afstand.
Het stonk naar gas en lijken. Er lagen lijken voor ons van Belgische en Franse soldaten. We hadden last van het chloorgas.
De nacht viel en alles werd rustig. ’s Morgens kwam er een legeraalmoezenier bij mij. Hij was nog gekleed in soutane. Hij gaf mij een medaille.
Een tijdje later zag ik een Duitse soldaat rechtstaan tegen een huis op zo’n 200m. Ik schoot 3 maal naeen, maar de vent bleef staan, zeer waarschijnlijk een dode.
Wat later kwam er een Franse officier. Hij vroeg mij waar de Duitsers zaten. Ik wees hem de huizen voor ons. Ik verwittigde hem zijn hoofd niet te hoog te steken.
Hij gaf mij de raad een klein putje naast mij te graven in de wand van de loopgracht en er van tijd mijn hoofd in te steken. De uitwasemingen verdreven het gas zei hij. Het water liep immers uit mijn ogen en mond. Ik deed het en het bracht merkbaar verlichting.
Doch die officier wou niet geloven dat de Duitsers daar zo dichtbij zaten.
Hij sprong uit de loopgracht met getrokken revolver. Nauwelijks had hij 5 passen gezet of hij zakte in elkaar. De volgende nacht haalden Fransen zijn lijk weg.
Er waren er ook van onze soldaten die ’s nachts lijken gingen aftasten.
Die nacht werd er niet veel geschoten. Er werd wijn in overvloed geschonken en verschillende werden zat. Zelf dronk ik niet.
In de voormiddag kwamen een Belgische en Franse officier bij mij met hun telefonisten die draden legden.
Ik zei hen dat al die huizen vol Duitsers zaten. Ikzelf en nog enkelen moesten opzij schuiven. Ze stelden hun toestel op en telefoneerden naar de kanonniers.
Direct brak een helse kanonnade los: feu rapide.
Enkele Duitsers vluchtten uit de huizen. We schoten ze allemaal neer. De huizen stortten in en een wolk stof wolkte op. ’t Rookte allemaal voor ons.
Na ’t bombardement stormden Franse Zouaven en soldaten van ons naar de resten van de huizen, bajonet au canon. Ze liepen al huilend en tierend. Ik zag een wegvluchtende Duitser, achternagezet door een Senegalees.
We durfden niet schieten omdat ze zo dicht bij elkaar liepen. De Duitser rende naar een boom, zwenkte op ’t laatste ogenblik maar de kleurling botste er vlak op. De Duitser kon ontkomen. De Fransman kwam terug. Nauwelijks had hij enkele stappen gezet of hij werd neer gekogeld.
Na de slag werd het kalmer. We moesten wat achteruit trekken en een nieuwe loopgracht aanleggen. Iedereen hielp er aan mee. Ik dolf op een plaats waar de grond zacht was en stootte op een begraven grenadier.
Er kwamen 3 Duitse vliegtuigen boven. Daarop werden we bestookt door Duitse kanonnen. Ik hoorde zeggen dat er doden waren, de legeraalmoezenier (misschien de man van wie ik de medaille kreeg?), brancardiers en soldaten.
’s Anderdaags werden we afgelost en gingen weer op rust te Bray-Dune. We wasten en kuisten ons, want we waren beslijkt van kop tot teen.
Dan moesten we naar ’t strand van De Panne voor een defilé voor koning Albert. De koning en de koningin zaten te paard.
De koning hield een toespraak, in ’t Frans natuurlijk, al waren het bijna allemaal Vlaamse soldaten. Ik verstond het toch zeer goed.
Dan was er een Vlaming die riep “Voor de Vlamingen hetzelfde”. Onze luitenant keerde zich vlug om en vroeg wie er geroepen had. Niemand wist het.
Gans de compagnie werd hard gestraft met zware dril. Maar het is niet uitgekomen.
Na enkele dagen moesten we de chasseurs, die weigerden over De Ijzer te trekken gaan aflossen.
Dit was tussen Diksmuide en de Petroltange aan de ’Boyau de la Mort’ (de Dodengang). Wij kwamen daar rond middernacht aan.
Er lagen 3 vlotbruggen op drijvende balen turf en planken. De luitenant liep als eerste. Ik volgde. Gevaarlijk, want regelmatig schoot een Duitse mitrailleur.
Er sloeg een Duitse obus in tussen mij en de luitenant. Ik kon niet zo goed zien in het donker. Dat de passerelle voor mij weg was, zag ik niet. Opeens plofte ik in het water. Ik klampte mij vast aan de planken en kroop er uit. Er volgde niemand meer.
Gelukkig was het zomer en warm. Langs een andere weg kwamen we in de loopgracht op 25m van de Duitse loopgracht.
Ik smeet mijn natte mantel af. Gelukkig dat het warm was, daardoor bibberde ik ditmaal niet.
De loopgracht was enkel een 30tal m lang. Ik plaatste mij op de rechter vleugel. Er stond daar een schietplaat uit ijzer van een cm dik. In ’t midden was er een schietgat.
Achter ons lagen 5 doden onder een deken.
De ganse nacht door was er geweervuur langs beide kanten. De loopgracht was niet goed gemaakt en wij versterkten hem met zandzakjes.
De volgende dag was er een Duitser die voortdurend tegen mijn plaat schoot. Iedere maal stond de plaat iets schuiner. Opeens schampte er een kogel af die naast mij in de grond boorde. Ik sprong naar de plaat en zette die weer recht. Af en toe losten wij een schot. De Duitsers staken een plank omhoog en wij schoten ernaar. Ze trokken hun plank in en staken die weer uit en toonden dat we driemaal raak hadden geschoten, net als op de schietstand in ’t kamp van Beverlo. Dan stak men een schop op. We schoten ernaar dat ’t klonk. Hij deed teken.
Links van de loopgracht was er een hol gegraven om te luisteren of de Duitsers niet groeven om onze loopgracht te ondermijnen. Er zat een man in om te luisteren.
Er was een van de onzen die een steen smeet. Al met eens plofte er een raar, rokend spul in onze loopgracht. Wij schoven opzij en na een minuut ontplofte dat tuig. De rook trok dat hol binnen en de man kwam er puffend en hoestend uitgekropen.
’s Nachts werden we afgelost. 2 Dagen later moesten we er weer naartoe. De luitenant van het tweede peloton had schrik en zat in een put achter ons.
Gans de nacht door werd er gewerkt om de loopgracht verder te versterken. Er waren soldaten die met stenen wierpen tegen de plaat waar de luitenant onder zat. Hij riep zijn ordonnans en vroeg of ze bombardeerden. De soldaten haatten hem omdat hij altijd hard strafte.
De volgende dag werden we bestookt door kanonnen van zwaar kaliber. Het viel mee. Die dag hadden we noch doden noch gekwetsten.
We werden terug afgelost.
Er werden vrijwilligers gevraagd om gedurende de dag op verkenning te gaan, daar er nu en dan 2 mannen verdwenen op een voorpost. We kropen door het lange gras naast het jaagpad aan de overkant van De Ijzer. We groeven een kleine loopgracht. Ik had een kleine periscoop en zag een Duitser aan de andere kant van het jaagpad op een 30tal m naar mij toe kruipen. Ik maakte mij al klaar om hem met mijn bajonet te steken, doch hij bleef liggen luisteren. Twee man naast mij kregen ruzie en spraken te luid. De Duitser kroop achteruit. Ik mocht niet schieten om onze nieuwe voorpost niet te verraden.
Een tijdje daarna werd ik korporaal benoemd en mocht nog een streepje op mijn mouw naaien bij dit van 1ste soldaat, een streep die ik bekomen had als eerste klas schutter. Interessant was dat ik voortaan dubbele soldij trok.
De 4de divisie kwam in onze plaats. Onze 1ste divisie trok naar de kanten van Pervijze.
De loopgraven van de 4de divisie werden geweldig bestookt De kanonnen van onze 1ste divisie namen op hun beurt de Duitse loopgraven onder vuur.
Daarna stilde de slag.
Wij gingen op rust te Oost-Vleteren en trokken vandaar naar Steenstrate.
Ik kreeg opdracht met 12 man op een vlot de Ieperlee over te steken naar onze voorpost. Dat vlot bestond uit 4 stukken kurk waarop planken lagen. Aan weerskanten was er een koord.
Er stond een door de gas verdroogde boom voor de loopgracht. De Duitsers zaten op zo’n 300 m afstand.
Ik schoot naar mussen die in de boom zaten. Bij het eerste schot schoot ik enkel wat pluimpjes weg. Daarna schoot ik 4 maal en telkens raak. Een van de Walen - er waren er maar 3 in onze compagnie – wipte vlug uit de loopgracht, graaide de mussen mee en sprong weer in de loopgracht. Ik als korporaal was verantwoordelijk en gaf hem een ferme uitbrander.
’s Nachts werden we weer afgelost door een ander groepje van onze compagnie.
Rond die tijd kregen we ook ons nieuw kaki-uniform.
Diezelfde Waal zei mij dat hij de loopgraven niet meer wou doen en zou trachten een postje achteruit te krijgen. Ik zei hem: “Je staat in het grote boek en je zult voort mogen schieten”. Hij deed zijn aanvraag en 4 dagen later mocht hij reeds achteruit. Ik heb nooit een Vlaming gekend die zomaar achteruit mocht.
In Steenstrate werden we beschoten door mortieren. Die hadden een verschrikkelijke uitwerking en sloegen diepe kraters. Maar algauw waren we ook dat gewend. Ze kwamen al draaiend door de lucht aanzoeven. We zagen ze omhoogschieten en afkomen. Aldus konden we wat uitwijken, maar meestal ook niet bij kruisvuur. Er werd ook geschoten met obussen die nog zwaarder waren; en die men niet of met moeite kon zien. Daardoor waren ze ook gevaarlijker.
Als we afgelost werden ging het altijd naar Oost-Vleteren waar we steeds sliepen in de schuur van Persoons.
In die periode kwamen ook de eerste congés. We mochten dan van tijd tot tijd voor 5-6 dagen op verlof gaan naar Frankrijk.
Ik trok naar Orly, op een 2 tal uur van Parijs. (Mijn vader rekende nog in uren in plaats van in km. 1 uur=5 km stappen. Van bij ons thuis: 4 uur naar Oostende en evenveel naar Brugge.)
Ik was daar goed bekend, want ik had daar meermalen en nog vlak voor de oorlog aan de oogst gewerkt. Ik werkte er een 4 tal dagen en ging dan op café met de mannen die daar werkten en daarna weer naar ’t front.
In de winter 1916-1917 moesten we naar de sector rechts tussen Diksmuide en De Blankaart. Het was een harde winter. De sneeuw bleef liggen tot in maart.
Men vertelde dat Duitsers, gehuld in witte lakens meermalen kwamen spieden, doch ik heb die nooit opgemerkt.
Men maakte vuur in de loopgrachten. Er werd niet veel geschoten. Met het water ertussen zaten we ook ver van elkaar.
We zaten te Steenstrate.
Kamiel Maertens van Woesten, mijn goede kameraad zei op zekere nacht “Willaeys, we zullen morgen een Duitser op zijn stro trekken”. Ik maakte een schietgat om er ’s morgens door te schieten. Kamiel stond in een hoek. Daar stond met krijt geschreven ‘Point dangeureux’. Ik zag een Duitser een zak omhoog trekken en wat rook opwalmen. Ik schoot; laadde mijn geweer opnieuw en legde aan. Plots sloeg een kogel in op het vaderlandertje vlak boven mijn hoofd. Twee vingers lager en ik was er niet meer geweest. Ik wrong een zak in het schietgat. Ik riep naar Kamiel dat ik er bijna was geweest. Hij loerde en schoot onvermoeibaar verder.
Opeens schoot een Duitser het zakje uit mijn schietgat. Ik wrong het er terug in. Had ik er achter gezeten dan was het prijs.
Even daarna tuimelt Kamiel achterover, geschoten in het hoofd. Geen woord meer. Op slag dood. Ik voelde verdriet en woede. Ik trok hem verder omlaag. Als we afgelost werden ging ik naar zijn begrafenis.
Wat later zaten we weer in de sector tussen Diksmuide en de Petroltange. De Duitsers hadden geweldig geschoten met loopgrachtmortieren. Er was een bres geslagen in de loopgracht. Van kommandant Strubbe kreeg ik het bevel om met zes man dat gat te dichten. We vulden de vaderlandertjes achter de loopgracht. Men bracht ze aan. We moesten er goed op letten ons niet te laten zien, want in de minoterie (meelfabriek) van Diksmuide zat een scherpschutter die het op ons gemunt had. Ik gaf August Versluys van Ruddervoorde bevel om de zakjes in de bres te werpen. Hij moest op zijn rug liggen en de zakjes over zijn hoofd in de bres werpen. Ik gaf hem de aangebrachte zakken aan. Hij werd moe van op zijn rug te liggen en draait zich op zijn zijde. Een Duitser merkt hem op en schiet juist boven hem. Ik deed hem weer op zijn rug liggen. Na een tijdje draait hij zich weer om en wordt in het hoofd getroffen. Hij sprak nog enkele onverstaanbare woorden. Ik trok hem omlaag. Brancardiers haalden hem weg. Daarna hoorde ik dat hij kort daarop gestorven was in het veldhospitaal tussen Beveren-Ijzer en Stavele. Weer gingen we naar een begrafenis. ’t Was een ferme boerenzoon van een jaar of 19, die wel 80 kg woog. Hij had nog maar 3 maal de loopgrachten gedaan.
Wat later moest ik met 12 man de compagnie van de genie vervoegen om te helpen bij het spannen van prikkeldraad voor de voorposten ‘Cheveaux frisés’ Friese ruiters). Elke nacht moesten we 5 uur werken. Er werd wel geschoten, maar dan kan men niet mikken. We waren dat gewoon en bleven er onverschillig bij.
De laatste nacht die ik werkte bij de genie zat onze compagnie op de voorposten. Het was nog nooit zo stil geweest ’s nachts.
Wanneer we terug op ons logement lagen te slapen barstte plots een geweldig bombardement los. De Duitsers schoten ook naar onze batterij waar we niet zover (400-500m) van verwijderd lagen. Velen vluchtten de hofstede uit. Ik ben er wel gebleven. Geen enkele granaat viel dichtbij.
Wat later vernam ik dat enkele mannen van onze compagnie gepakt waren, ook doden en gekwetsten o.a. een kameraad van mijn gemeente Ichtegem, Cyriel Devolder toen hij samen met nog een andere een gekwetste wegdroeg. Een obus die vlak bij hen insloeg trof hen. Cyriel was erg geketst aan een been dat later moest worden afgezet.
Onze compagnie kwam daar gehavend uit.
We moesten daarop naar Merkem aan de Ashoop, niet ver van De Kippe. Daar ging het soms weg en weer. Versterkingen van de Duitsers werden veroverd en daarna terug verloren.
Wij betrokken de loopgracht ‘de Kabeek’. Deze loopgracht was in vier posten verdeeld, telkens op een 100m van elkaar.
We verbleven er 6 dagen en 6 nachten.
’t Was begin september 1918. Ik zat op post 2. De loopgracht lag vol Duits spul: bajonetten, geweren, helmen, mitrailleurs.
Ik had al een mitrailleur bij mij gelegd om mee te nemen als we afgelost werden.
Voor mij zag ik Duitsers waar post 1 lag. Die mannen waren blijkbaar gepakt. ’t Was nog vroeg op de morgen. We hielden onze granaten gereed als ze zouden afkomen, maar dit gebeurde niet.
’t Was ook gevaarlijk op die post want we werden bestookt met Duitse brisantbommen en daarenboven door onze eigen kanonnen, die niet ver genoeg schoten. De Belgen schoten 2 maal; de Duitsers slechts eenmaal.
Er was maar 1 jongen die ’s nachts eten durfde halen, een jongen van Steenbrugge. Iedere maal dat hij terugkwam vertelde hij dat het in de bossen vol stond met kanonnen en hopen munitie en allerhande voorraad voor het groot offensief.
De Fransen, Engelsen en Amerikanen waren reeds doorgebroken.
Tijdens de oorlog vroegen de Geallieerden herhaaldelijk aan de Belgische regering om het Belgische leger te laten deelnemen aan hun offensieven. Dit werd echter verhinderd door de persoonlijke tussenkomst van koning Albert. Een slachtpartij zoals Verdun, de Somme of Passendale zou immers het einde van het Belgische leger betekend hebben. In de zomer van 1918 lagen de zaken echter anders en waren de kansen voor een succesvol eindoffensief voor het eerst reëel. De Belgen zouden voor het eerst sinds 1914 hun defensieve stellingen verlaten en mee in de aanval gaan. Daarvoor namen ze het noordelijke deel van de Ieperboog over van de Britse troepen. Het Belgische leger bemande nu het front van de kust tot aan de weg Ieper- Zonnebeke.
In de nacht van 28 september 1918 barstte een korte, maar hevige geconcentreerde artilleriebeschieting los. Drie uur later werd deze gevolgd door een grootscheepse infanterieaanval. Dezelfde dag bereikten Belgische Grenadiers en Karabiniers Passendale dat pas de volgende dag zou worden ingenomen. Ook elders boekten de verschillende legers grote vooruitgang. Het Duitse leger moest massaal terugtrekken. Vlak voor Roeselare konden ze nog twee weken stand houden. Wanneer de Belgen Gent bereikten, werd de Wapenstilstand ondertekend.
Na vier jaar vechten, zwegen de wapens eindelijk op 11 november 1918 om 11 uur.
De verliezen van het Belgische leger spreken boekdelen. Een derde van de slachtoffers viel tijdens de bewegingsoorlog van 1914. Een ander derde viel tijdens de oorlogsjaren 1915, 1916, 1917 en begin 1918. Het laatste derde tenslotte, kwam om tijdens het eindoffensief. De grote Belgische begraafplaats in Houthulst is van dit eindoffensief een stille getuige.
Op 27 september 1918 werd onze compagnie samen getrommeld en de luitenant, een Limburger stak een redevoering af. Het ogenblik was gekomen voor het groot offensief. De Amerikanen waren doorgebroken in Verdun, de Fransen aan de Somme en de Engelsen aan La Basré. Nu kwam de eer aan ons leger om door te breken.
We kregen eten en munitie in overvloed. Ik kreeg een poignard (dolk) van 25 cm om aan de pols te bevestigen. Hij zei dat we van de eerste dag Handzame zouden veroveren. Onze zware kanonnen zouden de kruispunten, stations en Duitse artillerie beschieten vanaf 1 uur ’s nachts. De lichte kanonnen zouden schieten van 4 tot 4u30.
Op dat moment was het ongeveer middernacht. We gingen liggen aan de voorposten.
We waren er pas of voor ons begon een nooit gezien of gehoord bombardement, al vuur en vlam.
De pinnekensdraad werd weggeschoten voor de Duitse posten.
Om 4u30 pijlde de witte fusé de hoogte in, het afgesproken teken om op te rukken.
De Duitsers gaven zich gemakkelijk over. Ze kwamen met de handen in de hoogte naar ons gelopen. We wezen hen de weg naar achter ons.
We waren met ons vieren. We stapten vooruit, een 20tal m van elkaar, het geweer in aanslag.
Op zeker ogenblik bemerkten we een eindje voor ons een 10tal Duitsers die met de handen omhoog stonden, doch plots begon een mitrailleur te schieten. We lieten ons vallen en schoten 2 van de Duitsers. Daarop trokken we 2 aan 2, de ene links en ik met nog iemand rechts. De mannen van links waren het eerst bij het bunkertje. Binnen zaten 2 mannen: de mitrailleur en een officier. Ik nam zijn revolver in beslag. Op een bakje stonden flessen jenever. We hadden er wel zin in, maar durfden er niet van drinken, kwestie van vergif.
We stuurden de 2 mannen achteruit en trokken verder. Links van het bos van Houthulst kwam een tram uit de richting van Terrest. We deden de tram stoppen. De 3 soldaten die uitstapten zonden we achteruit.
Die tramlijn liep van Houthulst tot het Wijnendale bos, vlak tegen de Reiger te Ichtegem waar ik woonde.
Een man die met mij later ook naar de frontstreek ging werken, vertelde mij dat Duitsers ooit tegen hem zegden “Wir sollen nach den Tommies fahren, gehe du mit?”
Aan de andere kant van de baan ging adjudant Pillaert met drie andere mannen naar een hofstede en pakten er 3 Duitsers.
Onze kanonnen begonnen heel dicht bij ons te schieten. Ze schoten veel te kort. Ik sprong in een schuur. Ik was juist binnen of een obus viel op een hoek van de barak en wij zagen bijna niet meer door het stof. Wij waren met twee in die barak. Ik keek naar buiten en er was niemand meer te zien. Ik zeg tegen die jongen “Ze zijn waarschijnlijk vooruit”. Nog op een 30 m van de hofstede begon van links een mitrailleur op mij te schieten. Ik liet mij direct vallen in een laagte. De andere jongen, die nog maar pas op het front was gekomen, sprong door de haag. Hij werd getroffen Ik hoorde hem nog even kermen. Ik rechtte mij om te vluchten. Er werd weer geschoten. Ze schoten dat de aarde op mij vloog. Ik kroop naar een diepere plaats in de gracht. Ze schoten naar de plaats waar ik lag. Ik dacht ik moet sterven. Ze schoten een groot gat in ’t gras aan de boord van de gracht.
Ik lag daar 5 minuten en zag 15 Duitsers op mij afkomen. De eerste had een lange revolver in de hand. Hij riep. Ik stond recht met mijn armen in de hoogte. Van achter de man met de revolver kwamen 2 man die mijn eetzakje en de poignard afnamen. Ze toonden verbazing over die dolk, doch hun Duits verstond ik niet. Ik moest de 2 granaten en de revolver uit mijn zakken halen en aan de kant leggen. Ze zegden daar niets over. Ze namen mij mee naar de hoogte van Klerken waar een bunker stond. Ik werd voor een officier geleid. Eerst begon hij in ’t Duits, doch ik begreep er niets van. Daarop schakelde hij over op Frans en kon ik antwoorden. Hij vroeg mij hoe ik daar geraakt was. Dan vroeg hij of we veel doden hadden? Ik antwoordde 1 gekwetste. Hij vroeg of er Fransen achter ons zaten? “Ik weet het niet. Ik zat 6 dagen en 6 nachten op de voorpost.” Dan vroeg hij ook nog of er Engelsen en Amerikanen achter ons zaten? “Van waar zijt gij” vroeg hij. Ik antwoordde “van Ichtegem”.
Ik was gepakt omstreeks 15u. ’s Avonds moest ik tussen 2 Duitse soldaten opstappen naar Handzame. Onderweg lag hier en daar een Duits paard te stinken. Te Handzame werd ik naar een Duits bureel geleid, maar ze ondervroegen mij niet. Ik kreeg een brok roggebrood van wel 10 dagen oud. Ik stak het op zak.
Vandaar ging het naar Kortemark. De stations van Handzame en Kortemark werden beschoten.
Verder naar Torhout, voorbij markt en station tot aan een klein kasteeltje.
’s Morgens vroeg kwam ik weer voorbij het station en zag dat het platgebombardeerd was. Er was reeds volk op de markt. Ik kreeg verbod te spreken tegen de burgers. Ze vroegen waar ik gepakt was. “Op de Hoogte van Klerken. De anderen zullen in ’t korte hier zijn”. Ik zag een jonge mevrouw die ik herkende.
Ik zei “Ik ben Jules Willaeys van Ichtegem. Doe de complimenten aan mijn moeder op de Reiger.” (Later heb ik vernomen dat men ‘Claeys’ had verstaan.)
Onderweg naar Lichtervelde werden we beschoten door 3 vliegers. De Duitsers sprongen achter een populier. Ik bleef staan. We hielden halt aan een school in Zwevezele dorp.
Er waren daar reeds een 15 tal soldaten. We bleven er een 2tal dagen. Ons aantal steeg tot een 40tal. Er was zelfs een Engelse piloot bij. 3 Duitsers hielden de wacht op de koer.
Weer werd ik ondervraagd waar ik gevangen genomen was? Ik zei “op de baan van Houthulst” Hij haalde er een kaart bij en zei dat is hier. Hij stampte op de grond toen ik zegde “Ik weet het niet, want onze officieren zeggen ons niets” Hij zei mij nog dat er tanks stonden op de baan naar Veurne.
Ik piekerde met de gedachte ’s nachts een ruit uit te halen, in de tuin te komen en over de muur te wippen. De weg naar huis kende ik.
We werden op de tram naar Tielt gezet . Een eind buiten Zwevezele was de tramlijn gebombardeerd. In rijen van 4 stapten we via Pittem naar Tielt.
Te Tielt werden we opgesloten in een wit huis niet ver van de spoorlijn. Plots kwamen er 3 Duitse officieren binnengestormd, terwijl geallieerde vliegers bommen gooiden op het station, 100m verder.
Daarna werden we naar Dendermonde getransporteerd, waar we een 14tal dagen bleven. We kregen een klein stukje brood per dag en een kommetje watersoep waarin een koolblad was gekookt. We waren scheel van de honger.
Dan werden we op de trein gestopt. Over Brussel, Leuven, Tienen ging het naar Aken. Vandaar naar Dülmen in Westfalen.
Daar bleven we weer een viertal dagen. Daar kregen we 3 inentingen. Er waren 3 dokters: een Duitser, een Fransman en een Engelsman. Men vertelde dat de Duitser diep stak. Ik verkoos de Fransman.
De kost was daar nog redelijk, maar we kregen maar half genoeg eten.
De eindbestemming was Göttingen met een bekende universiteit in Nedersaksen
Ik heb daar veel honger geleden, maar ik had geld en kon soms iets kopen. De Russische krijgsgevangenen naast ons hadden het nog veel slechter. Ik kocht een koolraap en gooide die naar hen toe.
Pas op 13 januari 1919 mocht ik naar huis. Wie laatst gevangen was moest ook wachten tot het laatst.
Tien dagen later moest ik al het Bezettingsleger vervoegen. Pas op 17 juli 1919 zou ik volledig gedemobiliseerd worden.
Mijn vader kon dagenlang vertellen over zijn oorlogsverleden. Ik herinner me nog de vele uren tijdens het onkruid wieden in de velden of bij het rapen van aardappelen. In de oorlogsjaren tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog ging alles nog manueel op onze kleine boerderij. Hoe dikwijls heeft hij mij niet gewaarschuwd bij het rooien van de aardappelen met de ‘viertander’, een kaphaak die je nu nog zelden ziet. “ Niet zo dicht bij mij!” Ik wilde ook geen woord missen. Een ander moment dat op mij een sterke indruk maakte: We waren onkruid aan ’t trekken in een aardappelveld terwijl hij almaar vertelde. Plots liet hij zich vallen. En hij had een reuzenhaas beet die te goed genoot van zijn middagdutje! Als jongen van 7-8 jaar sta je dan in bewondering voor je vader.
Toen mijn vader van de oorlog terugkwam en wou vertellen zei zijn moeder: “Zwijgt jongen ’t waren ook iemands kinderen”.
De boerderij op De Reiger te Ichtegem bevond zich op 14 km van Diksmuide. Tijdens de oorlog lagen er 2 Duitsers ingekwartierd, al iets oudere boeren, met vrouw en kinderen in Duitsland. Voor mijn grootmoeder waren het als familieleden geworden. Die mannen fungeerden als voermannen naar het front. Ze deden tussendoor het boerenwerk voor mijn grootmoeder.
Zij was al weduwe sinds 1898. Haar man, de smid van het gehucht, stierf aan longontsteking ,’Fleursel’. Met 3 weken verschil stierf ook diens broer, de wagenmaker, vader van 8 kinderen, 7 dochters en de jongste een zoon. Hun huis stond op de hoek van de Fonteinstraat waarlangs wij woonden en de Diksmuidebaan. De weduwe week uit naar Ontario in Canada. Toen ik met mijn ouders in 1979 op bezoek was in Detroit, waar zijn schoonzuster, de vrouw van zijn broer Camiel, mijn nicht Eveline en haar man Achille Vyncke een tuinbouwbedrijf hadden, vroegen we naar de Canadese familie. Ze wisten er niets van. Mijn dochter Veerle, die nu in Vancouver woont, kreeg enkele jaren geleden een e-mail van een zekere Christine Willaeys uit London in Ontario. Zijn wij familie? Zij bleek een kleindochter van die kozijn van mijn vader. De familie in Detroit, Michigan woont maar 170 km van de Canadese familie in London, Ontario.
Mijn vader, als oudste van vier, was pas 9 jaar oud toen zijn vader stierf. Zijn broer Camiel, 1 jaar jonger, is een jaar voor de oorlog, in 1913 uitgeweken naar Amerika (Detroit, waar de meeste West-Vlamingen naartoe trokken). Er waren nog 2 zussen van mijn vader.
Tijdens de oorlog ontving mijn vader twee brieven van zijn moeder. Zij schreef de brieven. Een Duitser stuurde die mee naar zijn vrouw in Duitsland. Vandaar stuurde zijn vrouw de brief door naar zijn broer Camiel in Amerika en die zond de brief naar mijn vader. In 1917, nadat ook de Verenigde Staten de oorlog verklaard hadden aan Duitsland (6 april 1917), kon dit niet meer. Mijn nonkel Camiel, in 1913 uitgeweken naar Detroit, zoals vele West-Vlamingen, werd soldaat in het Amerikaans leger. In augustus 1979 heb ik met mijn ouders en broer Raphael zijn graf bezocht. Hij was toen al enkele jaren overleden, maar werd begraven als een oud-militair. Die keer was wellicht de enige keer dat ik mijn vader diep ontroerd heb gezien.
Mijn vader was aan ’t front Vlaams gezind geworden en daarna lid van de VOS, de Vlaamse Oud Strijders. Ik heb de Vos-vlag van Ichtegem nog zien hangen in de Ijzertoren.
Hij vertelde hoe de afspraken in het kader van de frontbeweging stiekem moesten doorgegeven worden. Met briefjes moest men heel voorzichtig omgaan.
Het strafste verhaal dat hij vertelde: Er was een meeting gepland op een zondag na de mis in een dorp achter het front. De legerleiding had er weet van gekregen. Belgische officieren stuurden de jongens van een batterij weg en begonnen zelf te schieten naar dat dorp!
Na de oorlog was hij op alle herdenkingen voor de gesneuvelden. Vanaf De Reiger waar hij woonde was het slechts 14 km naar Diksmuide. Hij vertelde van de gebroeders Van Raemdonck, samen gesneuveld te Steenstrate en een van de eersten die herdacht werden . Al die herdenkingen heeft hij meegemaakt.
Zijn laatste Ijzerbedevaart te Diksmuide was in 1940. Wegens de Hitlergroet heeft hij toen definitief afgehaakt.
Dikwijls zong hij uit volle borst op zondag “Mijn Vlaanderen heb ik hertelijk lief, mijn Vlaanderen bovenal…”
In 1933 was mijn vader al 44. Zijn moeder zei hem dat het hoog tijd was om een vrouw te zoeken. Hij is niet ver geweest. Mijn moeder, 30 jaar, woonde een paar honderd meter verder aan de overkant van de Diksmuide baan.
Op 4 februari 1935 werd ik hun eerstgeborene. Ik ben hoog geboren, 48 m boven de zeespiegel op de heuvelrug van Koekelare, over Ichtegem, Torhout-Wijnendale tot Aartrijke. (Er zijn 2 punten van 51 m, het eerste niet ver van de wijkschool (is al een tijd verdwenen) op de Reiger waar ik tot het 5de leerjaar Co-educatie had.) Als ik later iemand van Oostende tegenkwam kon ik zeggen dat ik op hen in mijn jeugd had neergekeken!
Na het verhaal van mijn vader, besef ik nu dat mijn bestaan maar aan een zijden draadje heeft gehangen. Ik ben het leven dankbaar.
