While its beaches draw holidaymakers, growers are beginnig to appreciate the region's wine producing potential. Consequently vineyards are being replanted, vellars modernised and production methods updated. The local red wines are soft and fruity. I want to finish now, but not without beautiful MADEIRA, 1000 km. from the Portuguese mainland is best kwown for the classic fortified wine of the same name, whose history dates back over 500 years and is the stuff of legend and literature. Currently, some wineries are pioneering the production of quality table wines with VQPRD MADEIRENSE AND REGIONAL WINE - TERRASMADEIRENSEs - a further attraction to the visitors of this beautifull Island

Vinho regional Terras do Sado, DOC's Palmela and fortified wine DOC MOSCATEL de SETUBAL, all com from the Setubal Peninsula, a region flanked by the Tagus Estuary, Atlantic Ocean and Sado river. Fishing and wine have taken precedence. The Sandy soils are planted mainly with the castelo grape, yielding soft early maturing red wines with notes of raspberries and redcurrants, many of which age well. Moscatel de Setubal is made from the grape of the same name, a fortified wine which spends a lengthy time of barrel aging, depending on the brand. Generally nutty, raisiny and honeyed, the colour ranges from amber to dark brown, depending on its age.
