Dit overlijdensbericht kreeg ik door van dochter Darlene

    Frank Spriet

Frank Julian Spriet, 95, of San Bernardino, Calif., a former Baker City resident, died Aug. 26, 2007, at the home of his daughter, Darlene.

His funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Montecito Memorial Park at Colton, Calif.

Frank was born on Dec. 30, 1911, at Baker City. He worked as a carpenter and building contractor for 36 years. He was skilled in every phase of building.

He had an inventive mind and always had projects in the making. Frank's favorite sports were hunting and boxing.

He was a faithful Catholic until he was "born again" in 1974, his family said. He loved the Lord and witnessed to all his friends and family about their need to give their hearts to Jesus.

Frank left a legacy of courage, faithfulness, dependability, self-confidence, hard work, self-discipline and thriftiness, plus many talents in the line of construction.

He was a "hero" to his great-grandsons and will be greatly missed, his family said.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy; his wife, Sadie; his two brothers, Willy and Marcel; and his sister, Julia Phillips.

Survivors include his brother, Deal; his daughter, Barbara Buchan of San Bernardino and her children, Randy and Diane Powell, and her grandchildren Laura Kelly and Amy Powell and his daughter, Darlene Gnehm, of Rialto, Calif., her children, Cherie Wright, Laura Riggs, Patti Williams and Barbie Gordin, her grandchildren, Jared Cleghorn, Rachel Shealey, Justin and Lisa Riggs and David and Daniel Williams, and her great- grandchildren, Caleb, Cori and Logan Riggs.

Van een dochter die heel veel van haar vader hield
    MY DAD (Frank Spriet)
Most of you either knew my Daddy, or heard stories of his remarkable exploits. I’m going to share some additional details so you will know him a little better today. Daddy was born into a family of Belgium parents; he was the second of five children. They grew up on a farm, in an area called Pocahonous, Baker City, Oregon. There was no demonstration of affection shown, in his family; and most interaction was done with loud, angry voices. So Daddy was handicapped in the area of showing his love. He went to a one room school house in the country with 65 kids and one teacher until the 8th grade. He finished two years of high school in town. He worked at the mill during his summer breaks. Daddy helped build The Baker City Hotel when he was only fourteen. After the 10th grade he quit and went to work to help support the family. He lost his Dad in a terrible accident at the mill when he was 18 yr old. He lived on the ranch until getting married at 19yrs. He learned the carpentry trade in his first year of high school and built his first home soon after he married mama, His first son, Jimmy Franklin, came premature and died as an infant that next year. He left his beloved Oregon, when my mom came down with Asthma when expecting their second child. They lived in California for about 19 years. He always loved Oregon and never wanted to see other states or countries. His big dreamed was to one day move back up there. After he retired he was able to realize that dream. He bought a beautiful piece of property and built a home and lived there for several years. They came down around Thanksgiving and stayed with us until March each year. Mama, longing for her children, persuaded him to come back to live closer to their family. He worked in the construction field 36 years before retiring in 1969. He was a Forman, Contractor, Superintendent, and Inspector in his various jobs. I don’t recall him ever being “Out of Work”. He had a reputation for being hard-working honest and dependable, so the union hall always had request for him to be called for the available job. There was nothing he could not build. He also had an inventive mind and would be dreaming up many unusual projects which he would create in his off work hours. Such as Boats, “Water Shoes” Helicopters etc. Dad was small in stature (5’7”) but forceful in personality. He intimidated most everyone because of his explosive temper. Of all our suitors, Dick was the only one who wouldn’t let him get the upper hand. Dad made every effort to control his environment and family, our dating (who & where we could go) choosing our friends, our recreation, reading material etc. He would permit no resistance or questioning of his decisions. You could say he ran a “Tight Ship”. Daddy seemed to have a “Driving” Spirit, which would not permit him to rest or be lazy. He was self disciplined, never self-indulgent, never babied himself or catered to his own comfort. He was “tough”. He bore pain without a whimper. He lived a regimented & scheduled life. He was never late and never missing appointments work or church. He was generous in sharing his talents and labor with others, in his family, at no charge. He took time off his job to build a home for my sister and two homes for his brother, Marcel. As well as many smaller jobs for me. He always had an answer to our many questions. So we were sure he knew everything. And could do anything. He would have made a great pioneer, or survivalist in a shipwreck, or aftermath of war. I don’t want to “Glorify” Dad but to give God credit for his creation and the gifts he gives unto mankind. Like us all, Daddy had his weaknesses in Character which made him difficult to live with. His pride, prejudice, quick temper, irritability and impatience robbed his family of much peace over the years. However, we will not judge Daddy’s character knowing we are not saved by our merits but on the finished work of our Savior Jesus Christ. This calls to mind a scripture I want to share: “My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness And will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.” (1 Corinthians 4:4-5) Daddy had a couple of experiences of the presence of God when he was a child preparing for his First Holy Communion and Confirmation in the Catholic Church. He always promised God that he would one day seek to know him better and read the bible. However earning a living and the many project were always put first. Until he was brought down with unrelenting pain of herniated disks in his back. This ailment made him unable to work so he retired and began to read his bible and seek the Lord. So, in 1974 Daddy met Jesus as his personal Savior. There was a real transformation begin in his life. He was finally able to show emotion and affection. Daddy would get emotional when speaking of his family as well as the things of God. He committed to memory many full books of the bible and was a bold witness to his unsaved family members. Daddy had several experiences with God. He was miraculously healed of the herniated disks in his back at a Charismatic Convention. He was also blessed by vision of Jesus and miraculous answers to prayer. Daddy loved Boxing, Hunting, and Guns, going to the movies, and having unusual pets. For pets he had a fox, chicken hawk, coyote, owl, raven, chipmunks, squirrels, as well as the conventional dogs and cats. Daddy’s medical history is the most astounding of all. To have reached 95 years without being under doctor’s care, or required to take any medicine is nearly unheard of. His only trip to the hospital was when he was run over by a truck. He still had his own teeth and did not require glasses. Until February of this year, when his heart began to fail, his only sign of deterioration was the arthritis in his joints and some loss of hearing. Among his other talents, Daddy had a gift of wisdom & thriftiness, when it came to handling his finances. He was exocentric in his outlook on being tight in the price of a cup of coffee and long distance phone calls but extravagant in buying a tractor or a new car every couple of years. The legacy that has been handed down through Dad’s genes are some good and some not so good. The good traits are Faith toward God, he Strong Will, Courage, Self Confidence, Faithfulness, Dependability, Self Discipline, Thriftiness and Good work Ethics. Those not so good are The Stubbornness, Impatience, Controlling & Driving Spirits. At least we are grateful he didn’t past that bad temper down to us. Daddy was very lonesome since Mama went to be with the Lord four years ago. He’s out lived the friends they use to go dancing with, the buddies he hunted, fished & went shooting targets with. His only contacts, beside his family, was an occasional phone call from a buddy, John, who moved to San Diego, Bob, who moved to New Mexico, his friend & renter, Skeet, or his younger brother, Deal, from Oregon. I know he made that choice to leave this world when his body started to decline. So he was in control of what he was able to, clear up to the end. He was unique, exocentric man and there will never be another quite like him. We shall miss our Daddy & Grandpa dearly. A scripture I especially comfort myself with is found in (2 Sam 14:14) “Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered. So we must all die. But God does not take away life; instead, He devises ways so that a person may not remain estranged from Him.” “Yet I am always with you; You hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward You will take me into glory. Who have I in heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:23-26)
