Peetouderdag 2015 / Foster Parents Day 2015

Around 60 people were very curious on September 20th to know what the afternoon would bring. The theme “Father Quadras tastes India” left room for a multitude of possibilities. The idea came from a foster parent who had an Indian friend Vaishali living in England. Together with Varsha, her brother’s wife, they were willing to come that Sunday to Merksem to prepare a number of Indian dishes, perform some dances and apply henna drawings. One only knows a country after having smelled, felt and tasted it. Whereas feeling was beyond the possibilities, smelling and tasting were not. After a word of welcome with a friendly message from the new coordination team in Bellary the moment came to taste the 7 different small dishes for a first time. Next came two elegant solo dances. During the interruption several people took the opportunity to have a henna drawing on their arm or leg. The fact that so many people wanted to taste the dishes a second time only proves how much they were appreciated. The afternoon ended with a last dance and a warm goodbye to our very sympathetic Indian guests.

Our hearty thanks go to Vaishali, Nitin, Varsha and Diti for this very fine afternoon. Our hearty thanks also goes to Ingrid for bringing up this brilliant idea. Maybe some other foster parents also have ideas for a foster parent day … they are always welcome!

Bezoek aan Kamalapur / Visit to Kamalapur

In our article of June 24 we introduced the new coordination team in Bellary. Sister Mary who is part of this team visited Kamalapur – where we sponsor children since 2 years – and sent us the following message:

Loving greetings to you all from BSSK!

Herewith attached photos of Kamalapur FQ Children taken on 22nd July 2015. They are village children gathered in the parish Church at Kamalpur. They are here to wish you Hello and tell you thank you. I have on behalf of FQ team introduced your mission to them especially the great help is given for Indian children towards their studies. They have sensed your sacrifice and love for them and their assure of their prayers to you, FQ team & Sponsor parents. Fr. Martin conveyed his regards to you who has taken interest to help them. Kamalapur is an interior village and it has sub stations. Now recently children started to study and continuing otherwise many would drop their studies due to their poverty and would have landed as child labourers. But it is because of your generosity they are helped this way.

With sincere thanks,

Sr. Mary

Nieuws uit India / News from India

New school year

After 2 months vacation our foster children went back to school on June 1st. Like here some children return to their familiar school, others just start their education and still others change school to follow higher studies. We wish them all an interesting and succesful school year.

Thanks to the gifts form our foster parents we could again allow all children to go to school. This does not only give them a chance for a better future, it keeps them out of the circuit of children labour and reduces illiteracy. The impact of the school education on the environment of the child is often underestimated which is why it makes a lot of sense to continue our support.

Hittegolf

Heat wave

As you may have read in the papers or heard on TV there has been an heat wave in India with extreme temperatures of 50° C and more. The consequences were dramatic with a lot of victims. Through our contacts we heard that the region where our children are living were spared from those extreme temperatures. The heat wave mostly hit the neighbouring states.

Nieuwe functies

New functions

It is the custom in India that priests get a new assignment after 5 years. We went through this already several times.

This year the coordinating function for the foster parents programs was reassigned. Father Francis assumed this function for 6 years and we are very grateful for the very correct way in which he kept us informed and how he always had the welfare of the children as an absolute priority. Last year he already left his assignment as parish priest in Toranagallu – where he built a beautiful new church – to become director of the Vianney Vidyalaya High School in Bellary with 1500 children.

His assignment as coordinator is taken over by a coordination comity consisting of:

Father Sam Nalan taking care of Financial matters

Father O. Vincent for the administration

Sister Mary for the coordination. Since last year she was the assistant of Father Francis.

Father Vincent is not unknown to us since he was director in the St. John School in Maski. With him we have again an engaged person with a great hart for the children and very correct in his relation to our project. On top of this new function he also became director of the CCFT Center, Church Farm, in Jawalgera.

Which means automatically that Maski has a new team: Father Chinnappa is the new director and he is assisted by Fr. Chourappa and Brother Nikson.

We are confident that we will have a very good working relation with those new teams.

50 miljoen / 50 million

It was on the news recently: according to a UNICEF report the number of children going to school increased with 50 million over the last 15 years.

In 2000 our project became a non-profit organization and since then more than 460 children were sponsored to receive a school education. All together our foster parents contributed to this 50 million increase and they should be proud of it.

A good reason to bring you more pictures of a school: the Vianney Vidyalaya High School in Bellary. Since last year Father Francis, the coordinator of all foster parent projects, is the director of this school. After 5 years as parish priest in Toranagallu this is his new assignment.

The school with kindergarten, primary and secondary school has 1300 students: 800 boys and 300 girls. Although run by a catholic priest catholic students are a minority. There are students from a nearby leper colony and also physically challenged students from a home run by the Cluny religious sisters.

Pictures below were taken during a school feast in January 2015.

Peetouderdag 2014 / Foster Parents Day 2014

Whoever wanted to get acquainted with the Indian Cuisine had a big opportunity on Sunday November 30th in Wllgenhof. A group of foster parents with culinay expertise volunteered to prepare and serve a delicious meal. Not too spicy so that everybody could fully enjoy. The 87 foster parents and friends that came that day were thrilled by this exotic treat. Definitely a great success that was realised through te high number of participants, but also through the spontaneous help from so many volunteers to cook, serve, wash the dishes, dress the tables, clean the room afterwards, design a poster and handle all printing matters. THANK YOU to all for achieving this!

Nieuw schoolgebouw Maski / New schoolbuilding in Maski

With our Newsletters we reported several times about the contruction activities in Maski where a new school building was built. The intention was to transfer all school activities to this new buidling so that the actual one can be used again as it was originally meant: as a boarding.

August 2, 2014 was the big day: the buiding could be inaugurated and this was done with the required ceremony. Father O. Vincent, the actual director of the school, provided us a series of pictures so that we could witness this great event. Below you will find the highlights of this special day.

India in foto's/India in pictures - 3

After the 2 series on transportation we will have a look at how people are living in the villages.

Het dak bestaat uit een golfplaat  /  this 'house' was make with branches and the roof is a corrigated sheet.

Foto/picture 2  Een woning zoals er nog velen zijn in de dorpen  /  such houses still are quite normal in the villages.

Foto/picture 3  De 'keuken' in deze woning  /  the kitchen in this house.

Foto/picture 4  Geen kasten, alles wordt gewoon in een hoek opgestapeld  /  no wardrobes, everything is stowed in a corner.

Foto/picture 5  In dit huis is de vloer betegeld en er zijn stoelen  /  this house has a tiled floor and even 2 chairs.

Foto/picture 6  Een ander voorbeeld hoe het gebrek aan kasten wordt opgelost  /  another example how the lack of closets is solved.

Foto/picture 7  Er is een toenemend aantal bakstenen huizen in de dorpen  /  there is a growing number of brick houses in the villages

Foto/picture 8  Bij de huizen werd ook ruimte voor sanitair voorzien, meestal wordt dit echter voor opslag gebruikt  /  next to the houses provision was made for sanitary but this space is mostly used for storage.

Foto/picture 9  Ook hier woonden ooit mensen ... zij hebben nu een bakstenen huis in een ander dorp  /  people used to live here ... they now have a brick house in another village.

Hier volgen de foto's:

India in foto's - 2 / India in pictures - 2

This series of pictures completes the previous one and is about the transportation of people.

Foto/picture 1   Dit is de kleurrijke en romantische manier en hoofdzakelijk bedoeld voor toeristen die de stad Mysore bezoeken  /  This is the colourfull and romantic way which is primarily meant for the tourists visiting the city of Mysore.

In the cities the bicycle is quite normal even if it carries sometimes more people than one should expect.

Foto/picture 3   De vrouwen achterop in amazonezit is absoluut normaal. Het mag een wonder heten dat zij zelfs tijdens het slingeren in het drukke stadsverkeer of langs de vele putten, onverstoorbaar blijven zitten  /  Women sitting in amazon on the back is absolutely normal. It could be considered a miracle how they can sit unmoved while the bike is making its way through the dense city traffic or manouvering between the many holes.

Foto/picture 4   Er zijn natuurlijk ook lijnbussen  /  One can always take one of the busses.

Wie 's nacht reist gebruikt een sleeper  /  Moving over greater distances, just take the train. To travel by night use the sleeper.

 When coolies are going to or coming back from the fields where they work, they stand along the road and hop on one of those smaller trucks. There does not seem to be a problem with place on board.

Ook hier is het aantal passagiers zeer uiteenlopend / Children walk to the school or use a bicycle or, in the cities, they can take a rickshaw. Again the number of passengers is very variable.

Deze gele bussen zijn duidelijk herkenbaar  /  Most schools have busses to transport their children. Those yellow busses are very easy to recognize.

 When all those different ways of transport meet at one spot like the closed beams of a railroad crossing ... then this is what happens as soon as the beams open. Yet everybody gets on the other side!

Dat was het voor deze keer. We brengen binnenkort weer een andere reeks foto's.

That is it for this time. Soon we will bring yet another series of pictures.

India in foto's - 1 / India in pictures -1

On March 23rd there was a presentation about the latest trip to India. For all those who were not able to attend several series of pictures will be put on the site to provide a better idea about the environment in which our foster children are living.

The first series today is about traffic. Probably one of the most thrilling experiences for the first time visitor to India. The next pictures want to give an idea of the way in which goods are transported. All pictures were taken in the state of Karnataka and specifically in the Bellary and Raichur districts.

 Manpower only and no tools: the load is carried on the head.

Foto/picture 2   Water halen. /   Carrying water. Is often also done on the head, but those men have a carriage so that they can transport several recipients with water.

  It certainly is colorful the way this person is carrying the goods he tries to sell.

  Little donkeys carry their load between the motorbikes and cars in this busy street.

  Here the load is carried on the back of the bicycle and there seems to be no size limit.

Foto/picture 6   Een geit vervoeren ... geen probleem. Het gaat gewoon mee op de motor.   /   Moving a goat ... no problem. Just take it with you on the motorbike.

  A motor rickshaw is not only to carry people, it is also handy to transport coconuts.

Foto/picture 8   Beperkingen in hoogte ... breedte ...? /   Limited height ... width ...? There are no bridges over the road so the load of branches will probably arrive safely. The tractor carries bags with paddy, higher or wider is almost impossible.

  Some loads appear quite normal to our standards, such as this truck with a load of bananas.
